  • Summary: Not actually IP66 protected (a strong jet of water got inside). Draws 95 watts on startup, but as the unit heats up, the watt draw goes down to a steady state of 68 watts. The case gets HOT (172 F steady state after one hour of operation). It puts out a lot of light (and a good amount of heat as well). For the $20-$30 price point, not a bad deal as long as you can safely mount it so it won't burn anybody and avoid strong jets of water. (It would probably be fine in the rain, especially if the power cable gland was on the bottom and the glass face was pointing down.)

A common issue with these flood lights is that they aren't double insulated and the chassis isn't grounded. Verify there is (at a minimum) continuity from the center/round ground pin to the aluminum/magnesium/pot-metal conductive exterior. I've seen too many of these be electrically unsafe. Probably wise that you plugged it into a GFCI.

I just checked, the ground pin DOES have continuity to the case, so that's good. However, given the high temps the case gets up to, I wouldn't mount it anywhere where people could touch the case anyways....

@@summetj I imagine the brightness and heat dissipation is pretty extreme up close. Glad to hear it's likely also safe for the guys who might need in it's vicinity.
