      I've had the same type of results. Found a well-beaten trail, did a little work to move a stand into that vicinity, utilized a natural broken branch that overhangs the trail, scraped it up a bit. I literally have video of a buck peeing in it...and lots of frequent visitors. Awesome!

    we have two small chicory plots and intend to plant more. The deer have them down to 1.5 inches tall and don't leave them alone - they are browsed to near oblivion. Probably has to do with the fact that we don't live in an agricultural area... but to say deer don't like chicory simply isn't true. Plus chicory has done the best at withstanding the droughts and heat we have down here (S MO).

    Great video, thanks Jeff. Important to spray that rye at about 6 to 8 inches tall in the spring like you mentioned in another video. I didn't spray mine on time this year and then it gave me some problems. Lesson learned. But yes, after using this method last 2 years, the rye is definitely a good savior to a failing plot. Thanks for all the info and honesty.

    Perfect timing for this vid! I tried your ultimate no till strategy with buckwheat this season on a new 1/2 ac plot at our VA mountain home to try converting field secession into fall food. After the turkeys ravaged the seeds and the deer destroyed the sprouts, I'm left with 4" tall buckwheat and the weeds are trying to get a foothold once more. Planned to spray again and plant brassicas and rye 2nd to 3rd week of Aug.

    Do you know rye has a low forage value and is hard for animals to digest? If you start in spring with a round up ready soybean plot and add in your other favorite seeds after your second spraying you will have a massive amount of food for fall and winter. If you add in clover, you can have free nitrogen to start next planting season with.

    That’s for these videos been point out a lot of things we have been doing wrong! In southern maryland sandy old tobacco ground normally plant fall plots in late August early September. Normally don’t get our first frost till early November. On our failed clover plot from this spring that’s came up as mostly grass. Mowed it a couple weeks ago hoping to help control but just not enough clover in it. If we spray mid August with round up and 3 weeks later do a broadcast brassica planting and roll it and spray again if needed and then follow up with oats 3 weeks later if conditions are right we should get a good crop.

    When planting beans only buy round up ready beans. Then spray the plot to kill weeds a day before over seeding with beans or a different crop. Beans will grow untill the first frost or they finish growing. Hint buy a few bushel of beans from the local farmer this fall. Cost around 8 bucks a bushel. These should be round up ready too. A bushel will plant around a acre. I always do my beans in two plantings. So I will have pods from the first planting for late season and green foliage during bow season. I overseeded my beans with beans around July 15th. I live in heavy ag so I dont have to worry about over browsing.

      @@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 Your killing it.i get it and understand your angle and self taught knowledge. Keep having fun. The lands you hunt are very different from our farm in Southwest Minnesota. We have very open areas up here on the Buffalo Ridge and the Orange army always makes problems for our farm during gun season. I myself am a naturalist and a green builder so thats how I run my farms. It is more difficult and sometimes my food plots are not perfect. But they do hold the deer and our farm is one of those that naturally grows a deer herd in the fall. The biggest problems we have are the neighbors who hunt our property line and shoot into our farm. Did you know that in Minnesota that you can shoot into another farm to kill a deer. And if you do not have your farm legally posted that person can walk on your farm to retrieve the dead "poached" deer. Last year the "orange army' shot a doe on the neighbors. should of been down in ten feet but it ran a half a mile from where it was shot onto our farm and the orange army thought I would let them go get it while four pickup trucks were posted on all access around the farm waiting for me to go find his doe and push my farm. I spend a lot fo time on this farm making it a bow property. And still the orange army tries to mess it up. Out here in Lincoln County MN during gun season I will have to watch thirty men pushing the neighbors farms while pick up trucks race around the section shooting our of windows at the deer that they bump. Its a sad state of hunting our here. But everyone knows to stay the Xuck off our farm now. They know I won't take the abuse. The problem is we have no game wardens out here. anyway.

    I follow your advice to a "T", Jeff. The only issue I'm having is my plot is on a very slight grade and it seems everytime I plant, a thunderstorm washes my seed down to the low side and I get lots if bare ground and so I reseed again. I was thinking of lightly discing with my ATV across the grain of the slope, thus creating crevices to catch the seed. It wouldn't be deep at all but thought it could help and wouldn't add much work because my plot is only 150 yards from my house. Thoughts? Thank you so much for all the info over the years and congrats on the channel growth.

    Hey Jeff, thanks for all the videos over the past many years. I'm in Northwest Pennsylvania and experimenting with a couple small (1/4 - 1/2 acre) woodland opening plots this year using your ultimate no-till method. Soil wasn't the best to start with, coupled with the absent rain making my buckwheat pretty sparse. Still going to follow through with oats, grains, peas, and brassica in about 3 weeks. If things aren't looking good and still have a lot of bare soil I'm planning on heavy seeding winter rye.
    QUESTION - Have you ever dealt with Triticale? It seems to be gaining in popularity and just thought I would ask for any experiences before possibly experimenting with it in place of the rye on one of the plots.

    Nice video thanks. In my area of SW MI deer love chicory and seem to select the chicory at times in my clover patch. Probably more of summer food though.
    I use a similar system but don’t do with buckwheat. I frost seed clover every March as my cover crop and seems to establish well. I have to mow one time in late May to knock out weeds and the rye before it develops seed. Late July gets one spray of glyphosate. Then Fall plot is Oats and Brassica mix in August then top dress with Cereal Rye in September. Perhaps I have a doe factory but I just harvest a bunch and I’m lucky to have the depth of cover for bucks. Been working great for years. What would be advantage of buckwheat vs my plow down clover method?

      Tilling is also about time. There are ways to get the same results if planned properly. Tilling dries the soil, opens the land for possible erosion, exposed more weed seeds and most of the time folks are discing in weeds or summer crops, as opposed to planting something that was building the soil.
      No till is by far better than tilling for food plots, either with no till equipment or using my ultimate no till recipe. Either way tho, you have to practice effective weed control! Critical in farming and food plotting...

I just finished up building some micro plots in the woods where i cut down a stand of dead ash, so i am getting ready to seed everything this week. Rain has been minimal recently. Anyways, the buckwheat looks great and it is almost a shame to sentence it to death, but i know it is a must. My only question i have is how do you repeat the process in the spring? Do you just recommend spraying everything in april/may and disking it up and planting the buckwheat june 1st, or just broadcasting the buckwheat onto the surface and packing it? i started with a plowed and disked plot, broadcast the seed and then drug it in with chain link fence this year. I had germination in 4 days. I am just not sure how to repeat the process correctly. Thanks again for your videos and sharing your knowledge.

    • @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
      @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751  Před 4 lety

      Hi Steve! Glyphosate is a broad based killer, 2-4D is a broadleaf specific herbicide and holds MUCH more power to kill broadleafs. Common ag mix...2-4D kills broadleafs that Gly will not.

  • @Lion-G227
    @Lion-G227 Před 4 lety +1

    Jeff, on the no till where you seed into buckwheat, smash and then glyphosate. Are you using a round up ready seed? I was told by Antler King and Whitetail institute if I spray glyphosate over their seeds it will kill them as their seeds are not round up ready.

    • @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
      @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751  Před 4 lety +2

      Hi Casey if they told you that they misunderstood you. You can spray all the Glyphosate you want over the seeds and it will not harm them in any way. Glyphosate is a post emergent. It will only kill plants that are already growing, not seeds.
      I am sure they just misunderstood the question...
      BTW, been doing this for 2 decades ☺️ With zero failure. Will do it again with roughly 15 acres of my own plots this year.

    I asked this before but I have new plots that I just got permission to create on the land I hunt. I also don't have access to equipment other than my lawn tractor so I mowed an acre of 3-5 foot grass over this past weekend. I am going to spray this week to allow for some regrow so the gly takes. Am I S.O.L. on planting how you plant with forage on one half and brassicas on the other half or would it be best to layer the rye this fall so it acts as a smother crop? Keep up the good work!

    • @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
      @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751  Před 4 lety

      Hi. Mike! I would actually spray immediately, so the chemical soaks right into the root system.
      As long as you can see the soil...or get seed onto soil...you may really enjoy a mid August Brassica planting. I would actually spray now, seed in mid August and spray again at the same time if needed. The rye may actually be too small to get thru the thatch. In hindsight, always better NOT to mow, because it puts a layer of thatch in the ground this time of the year to get seed thru. So the Brassica may give you a fighting chance because the seeds are so tiny...may be able to get thru to the ground in a few weeks.

      @TheGuyFromWI Před 4 lety +1

      Mike Immel I went through it myself a bit earlier this year. After spraying twice I mowed all one direction to clear off most of the thatch. I have a good amount of bare soil now. Your challenge may also be compaction if you never broke the ground at all and have a lot of thick vegetation like grass. I used a tooth drag after my second spraying to rip the top soils dead roots and I now have about 1/4 inch of fine soil for a bed. Definitely brought up a bit more weeds/grass but I already sprayed the regrowth again and I’m in good shape. Not ideal like Jeff said but can be done.

      @@TheGuyFromWI - I am also from WI! I am hoping dragging the dethatcher rake followed by going over it with the bagging attachment will get the thatch and will allow for better soil-to-seed contact or that's what I am hoping for. • @TheGuyFromWI
      @TheGuyFromWI Před 4 lety +1

      Mike Immel having a bagger should be a big help. Especially if you haven’t mowed it already and have a bunch of dead compressed thatch on top of the soil. Live and learn, I was bummed I wasn’t able to get my buckwheat in this year for a smother crop. I have the seed and everything, but I’ll be in better shape next season with having better expectations. If it’s your first planting you might want to look into a soil test. Whitetail institute has a test that was about $20 with shipping and I got my results in 48 hours after they received it. Saved me hundreds of dollars on lime and exposed deficiencies that caused crop failure in previous years. I’m looking forward to a better plot this year. Jeff’s advice has been huge.

      Definately...you can frost seed any time after Sept 15th to October 1st. You just have to get seed onto the soil. Do not till or disc to plant at this time...you will just create an explosion of weed growth next Spring. Then use Simazine prior to spring green-up, and a combo of 1 pint per acre of 2-4D and 2 quarts per acre of Gly 2-3 weeks after spring green up.
