I really wish you or someone would start a video from true scratch in the fall. I'd say there are a number of people that have grown up pasture type field that is mowed and would like to convert that to a food plot. Seems like most advise tilling those, but a true no till for those scenarios to begin the buckwheat rotations would be great.
I’m in the same boat but in one of his videos he basically explained spraying 3x over the summer and broadcasting your fall crop into the duff. Small brassicas should rain into the decomposition. I had failed buckwheat this year due to very poor soil quality. I’ll be liming this month and planting around the 1st week of September and follow up with fertilizer. Im in Oklahoma so my planting dates are adjusted to my climate.
I think the urge to farm is born into our blood. Food plotting feels so rewarding beyond just shooting a big buck over your food plots. I think people that garden probably are the same way. There's something about putting in a bunch of work and then watching the results grow. To anyone that hasn't, go watch Clarkson's Farm on Amazon. There's just something about working a field and watching the life you created (the plants) and sustained (animals eating it).
Very true. I garden superhot peppers and love seeing them change even after just a day or two. I've been lucky this year to have private land I can put a food plot on. Fruit trees and standing ag on the property next to it. But just seeing work you put in grow is satisfying
I seen a comment somewhere the other day a person made about how easy it was to go hunt deer on private land with deer plots versus hunting public land. HYSTERICAL Goes along with the garden idea.
Folks like him buy their vegetables at the store where others have put in the hard work and really can't appreciate the freshness of a home grown vegetable come harvest time. They see only the product. They don't see the countless hours of work in the heat, ticks, snskes spreading tons of lime and fertilizer. The money invested in equipment and seed. But we do and its rewarding in many ways. It is born into us like you said.

You do it the right way. 2-4 d hurts Bees not round up. And you use the 2-4d early before pollinator. Thx man for all your advice
Jeff great video is always thanks for all the help. In preparing Frostseeding switchgrass ,is it ok to use buckwheat to plant into. Using the buckwheat is a weed suppressor late this year?
I had my farmer no till drill my switch into my picked corn ag field conversion and it turned out great.
This comment is good information for me... 12 acres of my land is leased to a farmer that planted corn. I talked to him last week that I was going plant switch in it (among other things) for next year.
Did you wait til spring? Or drill it in fall after harvest?

Watched so many of ur videos, appreciate all the work u put in. My dad and I bought 140 acres on the Minnesota River last year. Multiple food plots already set up. Were on a transition with corn and beans. Have about 6 acres of total plots. Going to transition to the no till this year. My question is. Should I get the plots tilled by a local connection or just cultipack the corn etc? I have a large mower we use for the trails too. Guess I’m looking for advice how to start the transition.

Jeff. Would you attempt to frost seed switch grass into a fall planted field of pure winter rye ? terminating the rye in spring?
My big mistake? Huge fan Jeff! I tried to do ultimate no till strategy this year for the 1st time , following all you recommendations except I had a no till drill rented and I drilled the buckwheat. I ended up with a lot! Of foxtail and some Johnson grass. I am assuming if I had just broadcast the buckwheat my fields probably would have turned out like yours?? Did not quit and did my brassicas and greens planting and sprayed hoping I’ll still end up with some good plots this fall. Just wondering about the impact of the drilling vs broadcasting of the buckwheat. Thanks
What will you do with the corn stocks next spring? Do you have to hand chop the stocks and pull them out?

Good stuff! Quick question about buckwheat. I live in South Carolina so our growing season is longer. April is about the time when you don't have to worry about frost. If I Plant buckwheat as a cover crop in spring and since growing season is so much longer here in SC, should I at maturity cultipack and spray and do another round of buckwheat to carry me to Fall planting time?
Do you add the Rye grain to a brassica only plot 5-6 weeks later? I did not do the 50/50 method. Also, when would you add your plot boost if you plant the rye grain?
Ive been watching a lot of vids on No till food plots. Im wanting to get started here in West Texas where we only have 25 inches of rainfall annually. Its already 97 here. Curios to know what i could do for an annual rotation of No till food plots on about 1.5 acres. Any suggestions appreciated. I have the ATV, sprayers, fertilizer spreader and may get that PackerMax with the new crimper attachment as well.

Jeff, I planted buckwheat in June on full plot, planted barrasica’ last week on one half, will be planting winner rye in 3-4 weeks on other half. Question centers around next spring. Winter rye half easy plant buckwheat in and terminate rye early June. Barrasica half will have roundup resistant weeds bye early June. Should I plant perennial clover with barrasica for cover crop or winter rye in spring? Can I leave until fall and broadcast and terminate or should I terminate in June and plant buckwheat? Thanks
What's your opinion on pure whitetail shady patch no till... I'm going one day this week to put it out and some pointers would be cool because I can't get an ATV or tractor to where I'm planting it because it's the only place i have available but the deer r all over it all year around so I'm sure the deer will eat on it if they steadily pass thru there... my spot is about 12 acres and is covered by trees near a swamp/creek

I tried the buckwheat no til. The buckwheat only grew about 30 inches and was very sparse.
I Broadcast my seed into what I could, sprayed the buckwheat with glysophate and ran it over with my four wheeler tires.
I have 50-80% chance of rain and storms all this week.
Should I be ok??
I had the same issue this year with my buckwheat in more of a sandy soil note to self next year buy more buckwheat seed besides that it was very easy to plant n get it grow my other buckwheat did awesome but that was in a plot I’ve had established for years
Thought I had a good kill on my spring time weeds. Planned my buckwheat. Runoff ditch overflowed in my plot washed away about 1/4 of my seeds. Weeds came back strong. Buckwheat not looking good. Planting end of this month not looking too exciting this year.

How did you take the landowners into letting you manage the land? I have talked to some about leasing their land but they don’t want me to cut any trees, plant food plots, or make any changes to the land at all so I didn’t lease. Is it sometimes just the owner or is there a different approach I should try?
Would there be any advantage using the beans instead of the buckwheat for the no till method ? Both planted in June and terminated in august?
Morning Jeff, Are you worried about buckwheat re seeding before you smash it and it effecting your fall plot? Especially if it sits 8-9 weeks etc

I planted Japanese millet in my wet areas and grew very well, as well as drying up the wetlands

What if you could plant rye , let it mature and then plant rye again into the standing rye, smash it down and take advantage of the seed buds in the standing rye, wonder how many years can you keep doing that before it doesn't do well

Hey I did exactly that last fall. I seeded the switchgrass after the ground was frozen last fall. This past spring I sprayed the rye w/RU twice. First green up probably late April early May. Then hit the weeds that came up late May early June.
I have a good catch on the switchgrass I have a lot of foxtail mixed in. I’ve mowed it three times this summer as the foxtail seed heads form. This is my fourth larger area of planting switchgrass (3/4acre). Ive done each of them differently. As long as I keep them mowed the first year they’ve all turned out well. Third year things come to fruition. Good luck
How quickly after using glyco and 2-4D can you put seed down?
Does it matter if I seed after a rain if we are supposed to get precipitation in the next 7 - 14 days or should I only do it 1-3 days prior to precipitation?

the bottle of glyphosate I bought in the information packet says do not plant within a year. Should I ignore this.
i don't own private land but I have access to some for hunting. I do my best with food plotting but I'm held back by money, food plotting isn't cheap.
Jeff, I planted roughly 4 acres of buckwheat this past spring in Northern Wisconsin. The buckwheat only grew maybe 5 inches and turned yellow. What could cause this? The pH level was right around 5.5-6
John....same problem in Northern Michigan. We had great germination, but it just never grew up and we had some yellowing as well. They were new plots and I'm guessing the pH was similar to yours. I think that was a factor and also some drought conditions after germination. I'm guessing it may take a couple of years to work lime into the soil to help get better results. What do you consider southern Ohio? For your planting I'm in columbiana county should I plant the same times as you do?

Just to be clear regarding switchgrass, prepare soil in late Fall, frost seed switchgrass around February and spray simazine in early March? Mow down to 6-8 inches over summer?
Simazine just before spring green up. Glyphosate in mid to late April, after green up, but before sw germinates. Then a ridiculous amount of patience. If too weedy, mow 6-8 inches. I planted about 3/4 of a mile of switchgrass screens this spring and only had to mow about 250 yards. The rest didn't need mowing.

I have a question on 2-4D Jeff. How important is flushing 2-4D out of your sprayer? my grandpa forgot to flush his empty sprayer and we used it for glyphosate after we seeded. Have you ever done this? If so, how bad will it effect our plot? I was unaware of him not flushing the sprayer
I rarely use alone...almost always combine with Gly. When I flush I just use about 5 gallons of water. Really there would be so little I do not think it will be a problem at all.
nice I do that and just fill up my sprayer all the way, drive around, spray thr wand and boom out and drain the rest seems ok

On August 9th I went to seed my fall food plot and I had already broadcasted my seed before I found out the my sprayer was messed up, so I went ahead and rolled over the buckwheat with the packer but it will be the 14th before I can get back to spray it with glyphosate... Will it be ok to spray then or should I just not spray
If there is any seed germination the glyphosate would kill it, tough decision.

That's my fear, and the reason I picked that day to seed was that area has been in a bit of a dry spell lately and everyday from the 10th to the 18th has 50% or more chance of evening showers except one day has 40%.... Idk what I'm going to do, I'm even thinking of pulling an all nighter running up tonight spray and come right back.
@@ameri_cancountry6936 Your right some areas have been experiencing drought while others have been flooding. Crazy. I guess you will have to spray asap and hope for the best. Like Jeff says, there is always winter rye later to fill the gaps. Good luck and have a great season.
Hi Jeff - first off, huge fan. Love the CZcams content, book and app. Being a whitetail purist, I have a hard time with the concept of using roundup or anything of the sort for preparing food plots. It obviously impacts my food plots with weed regrowth, even with weeding and raking. Surprised you use such strong products on crops that your bucks will eat- which will in turn end up in your plate. Any advice ?
I honestly wouldn't plant food plots of I didn't use chemicals to control weeds...waste of time.
I think when people are complaining about spraying hurting the pollinators, they are speaking about bees not the plants they feed on.
My plots are seeded, buckwheat smashed down, glyphosate sprayed... how long after can I use the “Plot Start”. Right away?
Plot start can go down right after just cannot mix it with Gly spraying
I'm pretty sure you use it the same day you spray. Watch the deergro plot start or Jeff's videos on it.

Hi Jeff. All four of my ultimate no till plots have germinated! Question regarding a plot of switchgrass. My plots is pretty weedy, mainly bc I can't use simizine/atrazine in NY. I've mowed it in June and July. It's now August and I can see the switch mixed in with the weeds. Should I mow again in August or let it continue to grow and start over with my weed regiment in the spring?
Josh I think mowing one more time in early August will benefit it in the long run. I have a bunch that needs to be mowed this weekend. Remember the switchgrass is a long term play...it will have a month or so still to grow after this mowing
Yes! You need to mow in July, ( like you did) and in August. You can also watch some of his videos regarding switchgrass and find a more detailed answer.

Have you ever sprayed RU and it did not work? I seeded into and crushed my buckwheat then sprayed it all. Six days later the buckwheat was growing and the few weeds I had tipped back up healthy as heck.
I resprayed the whole thing which sucked a bit because my brassicas had germinated nicely.
Proper application amounts of RU were used it did not rain for 48 hours after spraying. I’m baffled.
How much Roundup per acre did you use when it did not work as I've never had it "Not Work"?
Jeff recommends 2 quarts per acre of 41% concentrate of glyphosate.
FYI: It can sometimes take up to two weeks before you visually notice what you sprayed turning yellow.
@@geraldconway9737 hey thanks for the note. Yes I use RU at Jeff’s rate, have for about a decade and never had this happen. I think I have a probably cause though. I have a 500 rain tank that I use the water from in my sprayer. (I have a vineyard and the chemicals I use on the grapes really like soft rain water). Anyway it’s been dry here all summer so I e been using the hydrant as my water tank was empty. We got some rain and I had enough water in the rain tank to fill my sprayer. I’m thinking there was enough dust and dirt on my shed roof and gutters that feed into the tank that when the rain washed it all into my tank then I used it in my sprayer the particles of dirt in the water rendered the RU useless, which is how RU functions. Stupid move on my part.

If someone sprays but doesn't cultipack what effects might it have. I have areas I can only walk to and want to see what my options are short of tying rope to a board and smashing it down little by little
We have to do that. We spray a few weeks prior and it will Lay down and break down before you know it. Driving over it def would help. We spray with a rig in back of sxs or 4whlr so that smashes a lot down. Watching these and growing deer has the camp I’m in getting better plots than ever by far. I wish I was watching WHS 10 years ago. We watch these and try to implement everything Jeff does ha! Water holes and vines have been eye opening.

So I actually tilled up my soil and planted it and rolled it. I fertilized it correctly. Why in the heck is my germination crap? Some spots it’s awesome and some spots literally nothing. I don’t understand it. Birds? Turkeys?
If you overlapped your fertilizer and then planted before some of the nitrogen could dissipate, it can cause low germination rates. I had strips in the middle of two of my plots that didn't germinate due to too much fertilizer in the overlapping strips this year. I just waited a week and reseeded those strips.
@@jeffpangborn4943 some fertilizer I put down before I planted and some at the same time. What do you find is the best combo with that? I’m sort of new to it but I did better last year and knew less!!
@@lonesurviva1940 in an ideal world, I'd fertilize about two weeks before planting. But I was rushed for time and did it the same day this year. I am not a food plot expert by any stretch, but am learning each year too. Depending on what you planted and your location, you could probably go back and overseed just before a rain and things will work out.
@@jeffpangborn4943 I did brassicas.. I’m gonna cover it in rye whatever fails so it’s not the biggest deal in the world but I don’t want mistakes like that again. I’m very pissed off at all my hard work. Several videos I see fertilize and plant at the same time.. I haven’t used my urea yet. Was gonna wait 3-4 weeks.
I plant a wide variety of covers every year and have no deer because everyone around me has corn feeders out...ya'll making this way too complicated
