Oh yes, names ARE gibberish. I play russian version, most of townies named like Drazdaperma (acronym for LongLiveFirstMay), Palpatine (UNLIMITED POWER), really outdated name's, that's no one uses for centuries, like Fedot, Prohor, Fekla etc. Last names are terrible too. Even pre-made sims are not safe, and towns too. Pleasantview is translated as Newsettled, for some reason. And Pleasants are, logically, Newsettlers. Strangetown is Kitezhgrad, roughly translated as Wondercity, in russian folklore - long forgotten and lost town of immense beauty, full of treasure's. Pollination Technician 9 is translated as Bouquet of Gillyflowers 9. Curious are translated as Know-it-alls. Even street names are butchered, names of furniture too.

I'm seeing a lot of people comment that the game gives people weirdly archaic names in other languages... which is funny, since it kind of does the opposite in English. I expect my vampire counts to have some kind of archaic European names with nobiliary particles in the surnames, but instead we get things like Count Travis Landry or Contessa Cheryl Jayapalan.

I had been playing in Russian for a long time (I didn't understand English as a child at all), and I remember there had been two different game translations: official and non-official (pirate one). Non-official version has normal names, Caliente was Caliente, etc. And an official... oh boy.
But, If you ask me, I like official names more. Why? Well, they was frivolous and ridiculous sometimes, but they were in some way international? Like, yeah, that was a Russian translation, but It looks like translators kept in mind that those version gonna be used by a bunch of people from post-soviet countries, so they did really diverse namepool. Sometimes there was native names and last names from those post-soviet countries, and sometimes they were from all over the world, combined in silly combinations. And, maybe, translators didn't know that -enko and -jko is typicall Ukrainian last name endings and just thougth It sounds funny, but nonetheless I was simply glad to incounter Ukrainian last names (even made up). Hovewer, yeah, that was a bad translation in the sense of passing the meaning (like Caliente traslated as Gongadze, It's georgian last name with original meaning no close to the literal meaning of the word caliente).
Anyway, situation like that seems to be pretty rare in Russian traslation now, I guess that was some chaotic 2005's things.
P.S. Obviously I'm still bad at English, sorry.
P.P.S. English tenses is my personal hell.

Btw Sims 3 Russian translation is just fine, complete international (with an accent on standart English though) namepool with no silliness, also large number of variants.
And Sims 4 namepool is absolutelly garbage. It has arround 20-30 names and about the same number of last names, ridiculous in awful way and pretty much alike, because they use only Russian naming tradition. I feel like the first Russian mod for the Sims 4 was name mod and almost everyone now is playing with It, because otherwise It's unbearable.

I play sims 2 in Spanish and we kinda have weird names for townies too. The game uses names that actually exist, but first names are... really old-fashioned, I'm not sure if it makes sense 😂 Something that really bothers me is that Spanish version has a big lack of names and last names (like 30-40 names for males and 30-40 for females) and everyone ends up having the same name, it's pretty common to have 3 or 4 pair of sims with the same name/last name combination, I don't know if that thing also happens in other languages.
So making your own townies seems like a pretty good idea for me! I didn't know how to create them or if it was save to do them, thank you for the video!

Great and informative video! However, debug mode (boolProp testingcheatsenabled true) doesn't corrupt your game, that's just a very common misconception. It causes issues if you do silly things with it, such as add universal NPCs (Grim Reaper, Mrs. CrumpleBottom, ideal plantsim, etc.) and NPCs with incomplete character data (Social Worker, Repo-Man, etc.) to an active household. In short, debug mode itself is completely harmless, it's what the user does with it that causes issues. Having it on in the background does not corrupt your game and changing first names with the Tombstone of Life and Death is safe; changing surnames is not possible with the tool.
I've heard that changing surnames with SimPE causes issues and is not advised. I use the Last Name Copier to do that.

Oh yeah, the names in the Russian version are just as ridiculous as you might expect them to be in TS2. And I absolutely love it, it makes townies look like fiction characters or smth. Most of the times it's easy to understand the meanings of the names, but they sound either exaggeratedly creative or just foreign. Also very often you'll have sims with normal Russian names accompanied by last names that are typical for other languages. There's something great about it, don't you think so? It creates a special atmosphere in the game. In TS4 this feature is completely gone, the names are far too realistic, and it doesn't match my gaming preferences at all :( Sorry EA, you've made your best in 2004.

@@Marticore Oh I just age them up whenever I think is appropriate. Or make them into apartment residents and use NPC aging. I just need to make sure they are outside their apartment at 6 PM, which isn't hard. I use those apartments that have only beds, so they need to come out to take care of their needs. A bit of an elaborate setup but it smoothes out the aging. I still suck though, because I end up liking my townies too much, turn them into playables and always have too many lol

Of course, in The Sims 3, the names may not be quite conventional, but they're 100% better than in The Sims 4, where there are hardly any names other than well-known (Like the surnames of celebrities), but not ordinary. And so all the games are in Finnish.
