    Honestly, I always saw aging up at "1 day away" as shortening Sims' lives. I use it sometimes to make a Sim a little bit older.

      Marticore, how do you set your own age span in Sims 3? Ive been trying to come up with my own way instead of making things long but im pretty sure the length of aging and how its counted is different in 3 than 2, like it counts how many days they are than have left(?) if im not mistaken cause I know Adults can live up to 90 days or something like that, so I was curious on how you would plan your own aging system in that game to try to reflect real life?

    • @Marticore
      @Marticore  Před 3 lety +41

      For TS3 I usually go by 2 days = 1 year, so:
      Baby - 2 days
      Toddler - 10 days
      Child - 14 days
      Teenager - 14 days
      Young Adult - 50 days
      Adult - 40 days
      Elder - 20 days
      This way Sims live for minimum 150 days, so to me that is 75 years, but since elders usually don't die immediately, it can go up to 80+ years lived. Oh, and you need to have lifespan set to "long" to be able to do it!
      I like this double lifespan in TS3 because there I only play with one family. In TS2 I usually do rotational gameplay, so I prefer 1 day = 1 year.

    I don't consider the in game age as actual age. For me it's symbolic, like a story that cuts for example when a person is like 40 and continues when the sim turns 80 or something like that. Since their lifes are so short and we can't spend every single day of their life with them for me how we see their life is more like a diary, consisting of only the more important moments in their lives and their actual age isn't really that relevant to me.

      Besides counting years might lead to very creepy events such as a 16 year old teen dating with a 20 year old "teen".

      Same here. And for the teenage lifespan: I send them to college when they are 7 days from adulthood, and spend to 3-day rounds with them in college. That way they turn into adults at the same moment but they are not teenagers all the time. Maybe they should have introduced a "middle aged" stage or so? If you want to portray it as bad and unhealthy then you let them argue like 7+ times which realistically isn’t a lot but for the sims it is bc they don’t live that Long

    I figured that the reason the adult stage is so short is to promote using the elixir of life, which "kinda makes sense", because if your sim is very happy they can live longer bc they can use the elixir, while if they're miserable their age catches up to them faster (kinda like how lots of stress can lead to premature grey hair irl)

    You're right! It doesn't make sense at all!
    I started following Pleasantsims' aging system a few years ago, and I much prefer it to how Maxis set everything up. 14 days is way too long for teenagehood in my opinion, and three days of pregnancy is absurd. I like having the chance for siblings to be closer in age, since a lot of families have a bunch of children in short succession, even if it's more difficult in the short term.
    While I do love the aging system I follow, I do reminisce sometimes about the days where teens were teens for so long, and the younger life stages were still really fun to play around with. I used to take a lot more time customizing my toddlers, children and teens, since they'd be that age for longer, and it was fun to dress them up and make them exactly how I wanted. Nowadays, the age span is so short it's way too tedious to put time and effort into little Jimmy's winter outfit, since he'll be an adult in a few rounds. I also sometimes miss the three day pregnancies, since it felt so exciting watching that belly pop and seeing them slowly progress and change. There was time to plan out the nursery, have family over to see the pregnant sim, and really enjoy the process.
    All in all, this video was a trip down memory lane! Wonderful job, as always!

    aging has always been SUCH a struggle for me in this game, lord. back when i didn't know about mods and custom age spans, i used to feel SO stressed having to hurry with the baby making otherwise every child born into a family after the first one would end up growing up with irrationally old parents. i did enjoy how long the teen stage was, but not at the expense of the adult one. now i have a custom lifespan very similar to yours and i count days as years as well, but even that is kinda complicated with the way the game works. a huge issue for me is this "sims can/should age up a day before they actually would" thing, i never wanted to age sims up before it said 0 days but i did use to want to throw birthday parties. i haven't in a very long time though, i've been brought off it even if i now have mods to fix the double aging afterwards, i just can't be arsed now. it has always made me so nervous! also, i have never used the elixir of life, i know the developers meant it as a way for aspiration to influence lifespan but i am so glad they ended up making it optional in the form of a reward object. i do not like using most of the reward objects, they make the game too easy/unrealistic for someone who plays like me. and don't even get me started on uni - i wish i could have my teens live out every single minute of their teens before i have to send them to uni. ugh, all of this struggle. but it's still worth it for the best sims game!

But for my adults I substract that one day actually, because in my system teens are gone from families for 4 days when they go to college and my adult stage lasts 42 (43 technically, but you know), so if Sim went to college it should be 38 for them and with Sim Manipulator I can substract only 3 or only 5 days so I just figured out I can substract that one day extra too and my adults age up the same way as yours

    I have the days arranged so it adds up to 54 days as an elder by aging my sims up 1 day beforehand. I've also recently implemented something new with college in my rotations to make the later age of sims make more sense. Not sure what I'll do once I get sims that don't want to go college though. So the ages come out like this:
    Baby = 0-1 days/years
    Toddler = 2-4 days/years
    Child = 5-11 days/years
    Teenager = 12-17 days/years
    Young Adult = 18-25 days/years
    Adult = 26-53 days/years
    Elder = 54 days/years onward
    It was in the end kind of easy for me to get the college implemented in the life span by counting each semester in college as 1 day/year, even though that doesn't technically make sense, so college counts as 8 days total. This way I've managed to work around the illogical nature of the teen life span to make the original life span more realistic.

      I imagine the teens who didn't go to college, as shorter young adults. 😅 Teens can move out and drive cars in the Sims 2 so they can be 18+. Here in Finland the youngest age for kids to move out is at 16 and the youngest age to drive is at 18, and they go to college at 19 or 20 (if they did the military year between) at youngest. In sim days, that would still be 6 years time to do uni, which in Finland takes 5-7 years (bachelor 3 + masters 2, total length of your studying spot at the uni is 7 years).

    I also hate the sims 2 lifespan! My biggest pet peeve (when I was playing only with the base game) was that if I wanted to create a household that has a sim who has few kids and one or more is a teenager, then the parent would still have those 29 days until elder. So basically the child would have been born when the parent was a child or something?! Usually I send every teen to college nowadays and I fail the sims I feel aren't "suited" to the college life. Hope my explanation made sense!

    Here’s my age span that I play in my game, I play similar to pleasant sims but with a few alterations, her age span is 1 day= 1 year.
    Babies have 2 days (0-1 years as they couldn’t only have 1 day set in sim PE), toddlers have 5 days (age 1-5 years old), children have 7 days (age 6-12 years old), Teens have 8 days (13-20 years old, they can only go to college from age 16 onwards, if they go to college aged 17-19 years old, they must have 1-3 days taken off their adult lifespan to simulate that they graduated from college at age 21-23 years old) this does mean that sims go to school until they are 20 years old (we leave school in the UK at age 16) , adults get 40 days (ages 20-60 years old) and elders I left their lifespan alone because it looked a bit complicated in SimPE but I reckon they have around 10-15 days in their lifespan so I guess they would kick the bucket around 70-75 years old.
    Also I have adjusted pets ages in SimPE so the pets won’t live longer than the human sims! But this means pets will die whilst your kids are still growing up, sorry! It’s more realistic this way!

    I usually go with the in game aging system and sometimes use the elixir of life because I'm too lazy to work out a workable system that's also balanced between Sims (as I like to play rotationally in the Sims 2,) but it doesn't make much sense. It's annoying how most of the Strangetown teens are so close to aging up to adulthood (that's not really related but yeah lol,) and the Beakers and Nervous Subject are too close in age. Also there are some lifetime wants like having so many dates etc or owning a bunch of businesses at 5* which are unrealistic for the lifespan unless you extend it. I also don't like to rush Sims through their life I want them to have a bunch of dates before marrying, and failed relationships and things like that before getting married for realism and maybe get divorced sometimes and re-married and things like that. I also don't want them to go on a date every single day just to achieve the 50 date lifetime wants lol.

    I made my own custom lifespan too, with every day as one year and the 18 hour pregnancy mod. I do consider the last day to be a phantom day, because in SimPE it does count it as day "zero" and it makes aging up a bit easier for me. I'm pretty lenient on when they actually grow up, as long as it's before 18:00 aging next day so their age in the new state remains correct. I just think to myself that some people go a little faster, while others go a little slower. The phantom day made aging up very relaxed for me.
    I track their ages in an excel sheet. My lifespan gets them to very old, my preference is to age them up at age: baby 1, toddler 4, child 12, teen 18, adult 70, which means with at max. elders can get to be 100. And this is how I use the phantom day: if my child is one day from becoming a teen, he is 12 (on that phantom day). I organize a party when convenient (usually immediately). Then I age him up. He is still 12. Then proceeds to age up to thirteen normally at 18:00 the following day.
    Because I added that phantom day to each stage to do this, he counts in the game as 7 days from age up. So it's not that hard to count for me, I only need to retract one day. I just rely on my sims tracker more. Which also has a tab to check the amount of sim days against the age. Handy, because I make mistakes sometimes.
    I also use the phantom day for teens to send them to college. In college, every two days make one university year. So for each one day I play in regular hoods, I play two days in college. The students age up accordingly: one year older every two days. As they can get pregnant etc in college, family members also age only once every two days. When they return to the hood, I correct their in-game ages to match the one I have noted.

    I use a combo of BoilingOil's Slow Aging Controller and a slightly edited version of AlmightyHat's Proportional Gestation based aging mod. The aging mod uses a 1 day = 3 months model based on the 3 day sim pregnancy (so that it lasts about 9 "months"). You do end up with sims that live a loooong time, which is nice if you want to play at a relaxed pace. The aging controller I use mostly because it gives me the ability to stop aging on individual sims. Usually, I will stop the aging when I get the birthday pop-up so I don't have to worry about the sim aging up before they get to blow out the candles. (I just have to remember to turn it back on after!) Simler90 on Mod The Sims has a birthday party fix mod (in the Aging Mods upload) that's supposed to prevent a sim from aging up if there is a birthday party happening, but I haven't tried it.

    And since game posses Seasons I felt like they lived to short.
    Which was always the reason why when playing (or more like testing) Sims 3/4 I was giving them max long lifespan.
    Sure I feel like it was affecting how fast you can befriend people. But I liked seeing life of individual sims as a long adventure, and at the adult stage it could allow me to experience middle age crisis - express their change of their opinions, their style and what they consider more or less important, trying to do stuff that they never did.
    While in Sims 2 I was trying to stay on the rails.
    Still, Sims 2 is the most enjoyable.

    my age system:
    1 irl year = 1 ig day
    I add one extra day (in my age mod) for each life stage since the day they age up at doesn't count towards "days lived" like you said and I don't wanna do math, either
    example:
    baby 1+1 days (the game, ACR, SimPE etc will show "1 days lived")
    toddler 3+1 day ("4 days lived")
    child 6+1 days ("10 days lived")
    teen 8+1 days ("18 days lived" - aka they're 18 when finishing the teen age, turning 19 as an adult)
    and so on
    also you can customize "days lived" in the "other" tab in SimPE when you have a sim's file open :)

    There should be a middle-aged adult stage between adult and elder. I fake it by using the life elixer/potion of youth at the end of the adult stage to reset to the beginning of it, I also give the sim a new look that makes them look older. So they go through the adult stage twice. And for young adults, if they spend time at university I’ll put them back to the beginning of YA when they’re done.

    i essentially went from wanting a completely vanilla save file (no helping hands from motherlode or other money cheats, no mods, no tweaking for time, etc.), to having to play god in order just to let my generation family have their complete lives. 🥴

    I always use a mod to change the ages either from mod the sims or one that I make myself

  • @ianplaysrobloxandthesims860

    I know i am late but the reason why some life stage are short and some are longer is probably because of university expansion pack in that pack new age was introduce for the first time in the sims franchise. Sorry for my bad english.
