Well done my man...before I give my thoughts...let me just say first and foremost( for everyone else)in the world of auto body we’re held to certain parameters such as insurance non payment for necessary items,it’s a customer self-pay, the boss doesn’t get it,mostly monetary....but the way I like to do a lot of these repairs is to just straight up zone paint the side....and I’m sure you would agree...it gives a much nicer result...it sucks that painters who actually care like us can’t always dictate how we paint a car...but w a color like this you still managed to make an invisible transition and beautiful paint job.... everyone take note of this and follow through w what he’s saying...he is no imposter...and genuinely wants to help...nice job dude

Hey beautiful job! Painter here for 8 years, in the trade for 10 from NJ. I've never used basecoat colorless but you really want to make me try. We have it in our system (Standox solvent) I've just never used it because I'm so used to just blending without it, yes silvers too but that blend edge can work it's way down the panel lol. My blends are pretty solid but for some reason it never clicked to me that it would be so much easier to blend into a wet bed. I'll give it a shot, seems really logical to put it on in between coats also to obtain a wet bed blending surface each time.
also and maybe more importantly I just wanted to say thanks for the videos. I've recently felt a bit unenthusiastic about painting and the grind but I've been watching youtube videos of painters and watching others do what I do, most of which the same, but something reignited in me. It helped me find the passion for this trade again. Watching videos in this trade is actually like working at a new shop for a moment. You pick up on things like you would if say you switched the shop at which you work at and its extremely valuable! Thanks for the passion re-ignition

Can I suggest that during your edit you state what is in the gun? You did this in the prior video, it really helps especially since you cut in with the next shot with something else in the gun. Like at 12:00 you are doing clear base, but then at 12:11 you go to base coat. If someone didn’t understand the process you could only kinda tell by looking at the cup. I could see someone thinking you’re laying down clear base in that area. This is all new technique for most of us.

Hi Brian , thanks for all the great videos !! Have learned a lot from you. I’m a DIYer and working to fix some body damage to a silver metallic car, so this one hit home. Man … blending that paint without the proper equipment is tough, even if the paint is a decent match spray cans just can’t spray it very smoothly. 2nd attempt will be with a spray gun. I won’t be able to buy that sun gun though (very expensive), and I can see how that would be super useful . I couldn’t tell how bad the paint transition was until I was out in the sun !

I have been working on cars for 24 years. Teaching myself and listening to paint for about 20. You have a passion for this and I admire that. Very few have that. These paint shops and insurance paint shops cut corners at every turn. I just started redoing a paint job that was poorly done on a car I bought about 8 months ago. As I am sanding it I easily got through the paint. Looks like they put a very thin layer of primer on. Maybe 1 coat. Pathetic. So sick of these assholes who want all this money and do a crappy job. They think that fake smile is what we are really buying. I have not taken my car in for repair in 20 years and will not. The last time I did was to get electrical work done 17 years ago. When "I" went under a few years later I noticed they had crimped other wires that go to the ECM. So they corroded and I ended up having to replace them. This was a Good Year shop to. Just goes to show you they put the big name on to trick you into thinking they are better then the gas station mom and pop places. But they are not.

Now i feel like I can do it. You couldnt be more right about having confidence that you can do it, i was scared to do my first paint job on hood of my "new to me 2016 audi a6" the rest of it is in pristine condition. Thanks to your videos i was able to base and clear my hood. Didnt come out like your paint jobs but i am very happy for my 1st time and with some wet sanding and compound to get rid of orange peel its gonna look really good for a beginner. A blend to me is a optical illusion.I never liked using a blending clear because I felt that it was just another substrate to break down long term wise.Sometimes my blends turned out great but some times they would show maybe the paint didn’t match had good bad I thought it looked beforehand. I have always felt more confident using a slower reducer doing blends and allowing proper flash times. The other guys in the shop thought it was stupid (they would turn the heat up in the booth and get the fastest thinner in the shop on blends.I tried their way and didn’t like it the paint was almost dry coming out of the gun) I have also liked getting the new parts covered as close as possible before hanging on the vehicle and doing a blend.Keep up the good work and positive attitude.

You’re right! When using faster the paint is just about dry before it hits the panel. Makes no sense at all! Thanks for your positive comment !

Great content, Brian 😊 My advice for viewers is to check this pressure everytime, especially when painting silver. Keep it up 😉

I've been having real problems with getting metallic silver looking right. I think clear base is what I need. I think I got a nice substrate ready for metallic, but no turns out looking real bad. Seems like I got imperfections in the primer layer or deeper. Despite trying my best on the prep. So far they've all been cars I don't care about but soon I will be doing some rust repairs on a car I do care abot and it has to look good!
