Just out of curiosity, have you ever blended with aerosol? I’m a DIY’er too and i dont know if i can even do a lot of the steps with cans.

@@PaintSociety would you have to add the extra slow reducer to your base coat to blend out the edge if you dont have clear base to work with

The blend did help. Difference in colors are still very visible. Now the front door is different from the back and really off on the bumper typically bumpers are different shade all because plastic. The the sun light hit the car at end is bright once it get real light it’s be more visible. For a D.I.Y would be acceptable.

I love the pre-clearing the panel idea. Makes so much sense.
The 600 grit also removes the factory orange peel creating the same result as a flow coat. New clear will have its own peel.

Thank you thank you thank you, for continuing to improve each video and show us all the tips. Next time I’m in the booth I’m going to try to use the blending agent between coats , to my mentor it’s taboo to use in between coats
I think one of the best bits of info and instruction you give in your vids is which grits to use and when for sanding, I believe it's one of the fatal mistakes novice painters make is using too course grit thinking it cuts quicker, not realising it also leaves deeper scoring to fill.

Hell the insurance companies in my area fight all day long about no blending. Nothing but BS. They would only pay to do the door, not the hood.... It sucks. But great video Sir!!

Good job as always. Its interesting how you lay down an initial base of clear base but then go over it again before color, and between color coats. If I spray a wetbed, its just one coat and thats it. And even though a wetbed is good practice, i hardly ever do one. I just do first coat of color 100%, 2nd coat 50% color 50% clear base, 3rd coat, 25% color 75% clear base and dust it on for metallic uniformity. Using ppg bases and dbc500 intercoat clear base.

That’s a damn good job bro! Awesome blend and great technique. When I have chips on a blend I use a ez-dabber and do some touch ups before clearing. Just so it don’t look so bad.
I have done that before and the chips on a metallic always show up darker when touched up. Dries me insane

Another outstanding video, you are more professional than a lot of the teachers at most technical institutes that people can learn autobody and paint. The way you explain these steps is simply way to easy. I have a good friend that does custom painting there in Penbroke Pines. He was in need for someone to clear coat the artwork that he paints on motorcycles mainly. I wonder if you would be interested on doing something like that.

I've had this problem aswell. In my case case I sprayed a light grey sealer underneath a dark grey metallic. Same situation as urs where mine painted pannels turned lighter than the rest of the car. I blended and another tip I got was to use the same color but with a darker sealer. And its was a really good match. So I guess in ur case a darker color sealer would have been good and u wouldn't have had to do a second time.
Great video Brian like to see how good blending happens and you’re absolutely correct I did a BMW and there was six different whites for it it mattered where the car was painted where the paint came from and what country the car was painted . Great work great video great descriptions and detail 😊

You mentioned the use of only the Devilbiss gun on one part of the process, is that just your personal preference and can other guns be used to get the same results.

I think he was talking about the pressure on the gun. If you have another gun you might need more pressure. I think around 20~23psi for metallics is fine
All guns can do similar. I just prefer the dv1
Hey Brian, silly question, could you tell us more about why you paint/don't paint the bumper on the car? Wouldn't the blend be more seamless if the new paint extended to as much edges as possible? Love your videos!
In order to warrantee the bumper and to get paint on all edges even the bottom it must be taken off and disassembled. The bumper was painted with the same exact paint that we used on the car and matches just fine
have any videos on painting door jambs? assuming its very similar to the rest of the car just curious on any tips.
An extremely helpful video would be how to prep rounded panels( like vw beetle and the like) how to keep that nice curve with no flat spots, and how to trigger off and keep even hang without developing runs. Cos it's those old classic rounded panel works that are the trickiest to make look perfect.

Question: strictly about blending agent, not color. when you do the blending agent on the first time you completely cover the adjacent panels. When you are doing the wet bed with the agent, do you go to the opposite edge with it or stop in the middle.
Great video. I know you did the sail panel for free, but check to make sure your paint manufacture covers that blend like that on the sail panel. That can screw your warranty from them. I know Ppg doesn’t cover it. That’s what I paint by the way.
Hi Brian. Is the DV1 your using the HVLP plus air cap or HVLP one. When you say 15 psi is that reading in the gun digital gauge or on gun inlet. Think DV1 reads pressure slightly differently on the gauge. Thanks for helping and learning loads from you video’s. 👍👍
Another great video and agree with every word and technique you have showed.i just wish when you tell a customer you have to blend and they look and say why can’t you just paint the one panel 😳 I’ve just painted a frt end on a new bmw mineral white 3 stage and had to do 12 sprayout cards to blend new bumper and bonnet into wings etc sone customers don’t know how long waterbase spray outs can take :) great video buddy
Just explain to them it’s like touching Up the paint in your house in the middle of the wall and expect it to match.
Or when there's that chip on the opposite edge of the panel and the customer says, "Can't you just paint that too," like it's that easy and all paint matches to perfection lol!

Brian... I'm having a little difficulty understanding what exactly sealer is... Could you tell me what it is, and add some links as to what you are using for a "sealer"??
We use colorbuild sealer but you can use any sealer within your paint system.

@Paint Society quick question Brian, why did you paint the fender including with clear before putting on the car? I think to have closer grade of substrate, but also to use less base coat at the time of blending so as to help avoid runs?
What exactly is clear base? Is there a different name that it's sold under? Is it also called "Intercoat Clear"?

Is blending mixing two colors of wet paint before you spray? Or spraying with light coverage so that the original color shows through to varying degrees, creating a color intermediate between the old color and the new?

Question what if you need to do a panel and you are using paint cans? What are the steps? What would you use as the blending agent??
So to keep a wet coat, you only use the blending addative in the area youre blending to and not putting the addative on all of it right?
After your first blend coat did you then reapply the wet bed over the panels an the base you just shot ,or just in the area we're the blend would be

That gun is setup for low pressure and high transfer efficiency rate.

How did you get 4 different shades did you play with the toners to get the right match because I have to do a blend on my car an I don't have a mixing bank I'm just going to the paint store with color code.

I plan on doing a paint job on some panels of my car at home (DIY). I don't have the equipment for mixing the paint to get the exact match. Would getting paint that has the car's paint code be acceptable or should I not paint due to possibility of having a different variant of paint that could be off? I should mention I will most likely replace the panels with new panels.

What is a good brand for the clear basecoat?
Brian, I really could use your expertise. I just ordered all House of Kolors sealer, paint, and clear. I had a supposed pro painter paint the car. I had him stop when I saw the sealer. Its patchy, uneven, has sweat bubbles from him sweating on the car, and its tiger stripped. Needless to say, the car is back home. Hes fired. Question is, do I need to wet sand his flaws, and redo the sealer, or can i some how get around reordering my h.o.k sealer, which we both know isnt cheap. Please respond and give me some help. Ive spent 2 yrs working on this car, all to have some hack with good reviews mess it up. Please man, I want this right.

Brian... What would you recommend for a newbie in DA-ing. Is it safer to do a finish P800 or P1000 with block or just hit it with DA? Is it possible to make a visible dents with such fine grit on DA(creating waves on the panels)?

By the way, let's pretend that in 1 year the fender has to be replaced due to a minor accident: is it possible to replace and repaint just the fender, knowing the exact formula of the paint, or, due to UV rays altering the color, you have to blend the paint in the adjacent panels again?
