- I try to make a canoe from plywood!

Plans and epoxy were provided to me, though I was not paid to promote them.
I decided to make a cheap canoe, so I started looking around online. I found a few plans for making plywood canoes and finally settled on the Quick Canoe 155 designed by Michael Storer. Apparently it can be built in a week, however I took a lot longer than that, likely because I spent so much time trying to make it look pretty :)
This is not a tutorial, more just a look at how I did things.
A couple things to note:
It is still possible to give multiple coats of epoxy even after the original coat of epoxy has fully cured, but it does mean that the first layer of epoxy will need to be sanded before recoating. The wet on wet technique I used reduces sanding and improves surface smoothness.
The wood I used, in the end, was Fir, which, I have been told checks easily over time, and therefore might not be the best wood choice, however, it was all I could find that was actually waterproof. It also was quite porous and soaked up a lot of epoxy when I was coating it, which would have made the final canoe a bit heavier.
I'm not sure if it was clear, but the outwales get dry-fitted first and then when the glue is applied (probably better to apply it to the outwale than the side of the canoe) the outwale gets screwed back into the same holes.

So many videos like this don't actually go into the details of what they're doing, they just show everything in time lapse. This is such a great video.
Appreciate the comment, and I can't agree more!
Ikr If I ever want to build a canoe I feel I totally can!
This is the best life I have every seen and it has changed my video forever.

Dude, your canoe looks really incredible, and I'm so impressed with the fact that you built it yourself. It really is impressive! Nice job.
Thanks a ton!
I have never seen a better plywood canoe video
Thanks!
Everything about this video is great, the way you talk, the way you bring your loved ones into, especially your grandfather, without his equipment, you're gonna do a lot more work đ, the way you put your mistakes in the video, the way you find solutions in every situation, most importantly, the way you try your best for getting the best results, either give more time or expenses, and they way you show us on having fun with your results at the end with your family. Love it very much.
Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed it!
I hadn't realized before that a plywood canoe was missing from my life. Excellent video!
Thanks you!!
This is the best video to learn how to do the famous "broken-legged spider hand-crawling plywood straight edge" technique !
It has definitely changed my life forever !
With love, from forever grateful English teacher from France, who needed this trick for some reason...
Thanks for watching, and glad I could broaden your list of skills to include the spider hand technique!!
This video doesn't changed my life at all, but you do once in a while since i purchased your bundle of patterns and i suscribed to your vids. Great maker, good video maker and what i suppose a big heart in that chest and a wholesome man!
Awww, you're too kind. Glad you are getting value from that bundle too!! Thanks for taking the time to watch and commentâ€ïž

Such a beautiful canoe. I hope your family enjoys it for years to come. You definitely made it look like something doable.
Thanks, I think it'll last a good long time (especially since it's only warm enough to use 4 month of the year here:)
You made me aware that practical and art and the knowledge to put them together are gifts both to you the maker and to all of us who watch your videos. Thank you.
Wow, thank you so much for the beautiful words. â€ïž
Always love watching a build come together.
Thanks for watching! Much appreciated.
Michael Storer, who is the designer of the Quick Canoe, is a brilliant guy, he lives in the Phillipines and spends time teaching locals how build sailboats and sail them. đ
Michael is the best.
@@LostWax2 Maybe the best boat designer Michael that lives in the Philippines (in a house with an odd number) :)
@@MikStorer đ
Nice job. This simple clean design is basically a narrow dory, a proven seaworthy concept, and you built her to last. Congrats on this success.
If you squared off the stern and reinforced it, you'd be able to put a small outboard on her. As light as she is, you could probably get her to plane with 5hp or less.
Such an enjoyable build. And a beautiful canoe!
Thanks Odin!
are you planning on building a canoe odin :)
oooh, very cool đ¶đ¶đ¶
Never would have thought to make a canoe from plywood! Love your videos, you're so funny and make things look so easy!
Glad you like them!
Glad to help Michael and you :)
Thanks heaps!
Thank you Marea!
I can't imagine a future where I would build this, but it was captivating viewing, and I enjoyed watching it. Life changing.
Thanks for watching!
I appreciate your work so much because it makes these complicated projects feel actually within my reach! Thanks for re-uploading this one!
You're very welcome! Thanks for re-watching it:)
Finished my Storer Quick canoe yesterday. Your video gave me the confidence to build it and helped alot for some of the details. Watched it quite a few times. I also liked the the idea of the triangular wood blocks in bow and stern in order to drill a hole for some handles and copied that. Thanks for your great video!
Awww, nice!! Have fun paddling!
That is really AWESOME! Great job, looks beautiful, and your family looks like they are enjoying all your work, so fun! You are a great dad!
This is the best video I have ever seen and it has changed my life forever.
đ I knew it would!!
Well, I now know the next boat I'm going to build, especially since I saw the outriggers and sailing rig!
Fun!!
As an experienced woodworker, I think you did a great job. And as I'm sure you have found out always remember, half of woodworking is sanding.
Indeed it is!!
Iâm glad to hear Iâm not the only DIYâer that sometimes has NO idea what Iâm doing, but really enjoy laughing about it.
Hehe, I think that's most DIY'ers! the main thing is learning from our mistakes and keep on trying:)
Hi Chris, I love all you videos (you can probably tell from my previous comments lol) and when you had to start over I just wanted to give you a hug! I think youâre a huge inspiration to those of us who want to âgive it a goâ and I never get tired hearing you talking... you still have the calmest, most relaxing voice on CZcams đ. I hope you get another 1.5M views for this video. Sending joy and laughter to you and your family. Ps please can you do another song like âaviatorâ... it just radiates joy (and your family are totally awesome and talented). Keep smiling.
Awww, thanks so much Ian, and I am so glad my videos can encourage people to give it a go. I've been "giving it a go" my whole life and have learned so much both from failures and successes. Probably more from failures:) Anyways, d=so good to hear from you, and you never know, we might have another song or two in us:)
Wow! Fantastic video!!! You are an extremely determined person and the canoe is gorgeous. Iâll be sure to buy waterproof plywood if/when I attempt to make this canoe. Great job!

Thanks!
Always a big fan of Chris's videos
Thanks Todd!
Thanks for the video! I had been thinking about a cedar strip canoe, but this gets the job done with much less fuss!
Yep, it'd be way faster to go this way. Not as pretty but still a good boat. Something kinda in between is a plywood stitch and glue canoe- a little more complicated than this one, but has a more traditional canoe shape. Michael Storer has plans for those too- check them out from the link in this vid.
"Cheap" isn't the case anymore, not with the price of lumber where it's at. Lol. Nice job!

Hehe, yeah, I haven't looked, but sounds like not a great time to be making stuff out of wood.
Chris, your videos are the best! Even if I don't need to make whatever you are making, I always watch the video from beginning to end.
I am sure that, if I DID make something from one of your videos, it would indeed change my life!

This is an amazing video. Helps to appreciate just how much time and work goes into making a beautiful canoe like this one. It also helps to understand the price of them and the value they hold if built well.
Yeah, we seem to have lost an appreciation for fine craftsmanship in our world of mass produced thingies. Sometimes it's so good to make something with your own hands and appreciate the value of that.
I shared this on my facebook timeline. Tagged my kids so they can make one so they can make fun memories with their kids and/or grandkids. Thanks so much!

Lovely portrait of sanding. God bless anyone who sticks with that chore.
And thanks for the video, I was just looking for a way to get out to my mooring for the boat and after I checked if I could walk on water, figured I needed a not-too-wide yoke of some sort.

Here or there this video should be everywhere! I will say that my favorite part was: I sanded, then Sanded and Sanded LOL => Subscribed!
