Building a Cedar-Strip Canoe in 30 Days!
Vložit
- čas přidán 31. 05. 2024
- I've been paddling the Adirondacks in cedar strip canoes with my aunt and uncle for as long as I can remember, so when my uncle offered to help me build my own canoe, I leapt at the opportunity. This was one of the most magical months of my life, getting to be up in Vermont learning from one of my favorite people. I hope you enjoy this video as much as I enjoyed making it.
For those wondering: it took 30 days to build the canoe, another month to get a good final varnish coat (quarantine started though, so we slowed down), then 3 months to edit the video. The final boat is 43 lbs and 14' long.

This was beautiful!! I hope you will keep doing this in the future, because it is a dying trade..👍
What a wonderful gift, quite jealous of the canoe and of course locations.
Not the sarcastic uncle, have one of those already. Do hope you have given enough back to score a few point's back lolz.
I'd love to but i can't afford a canoe like that. :) beautiful though! I live in Ohio on the river and we just use kayaks mostly.
Awesome build. Please find a good man and make lots of babies... the world.. and our country.. needs more people like you and the knowledge you're accumulating needs to be passed on! And it's pretty obvious that if you're not full of yourself (don't appear to be) then you can get nearly any man. Attractive, smart, capable, and most importantly... a DOER! Please take this to heart, make a huge family and pass on what you know and what you will keep learning in the future!
AWESOME!! Super to have such a talented uncle. Your canoes are just beautiful. Love handmade canoes. Great video!
Honestly, as impressive as the canoe is, I'm even more impressed (inspired?) by how much your aunt and uncle have clearly invested into your life. What an amazing couple, and this video, I think, is a fantastic tribute to them.
Yes. I agree. Amazing people!
I love the music by auntie and uncle, and what a craftsman the uncle is. What a love of labor and craft. 30 days, two people, quite a few tools, and a masterpiece.
twinge of jealousy about her childhood lol
its good that veritasium asked you to construct the "imposible machine", now i have a whole channel with a lot of videos that i can watch
Same here...
Same!!
when she asked me to subscribe on the colab video I thought "no - it does not work that way" and I started watching her back log, which then made me subscribe.
She is incredibly versatile, talented and patient - but "only" her ability to solve problems was really showcased in the colab. Very thankful for veritatsium for the colab.
Same here, cute host too.
Yup, same here.
What I learned today: Xyla has the world’s coolest aunt and uncle

She also has too many Uncles and aunts! Hope she is not in some type of cult community!!

Damn!!!! Amazing that you found this chanel
I know you’ll build your cedar strip canoe one day, Destin!
Yesterday I saw this saying 1 day ago, why is it still 1 day ago today
I see CZcams recommendations got both of us 😅

I've always wanted to build a canoe. So cool to see that I can build one in 20 minutes.

check out flomo's flywood canoes. you can make one in a few days.

Veritasium introduced me to her and now I'm hooked 😄😄
This is such a beautiful boat you made. When Unc said “NO NOT YET!” it made me realize what precious memories you made with your uncle in the process.
She wrote you a song... When you first flew an aeroplane solo... What a life you've already lived and at such a young age! So wonderful to see someone grasp life so enthusiastically with both hands. 👑
It's much easier to embrace a blessed life. More parents need to focus on giving their children the experience to be blessed, than imprint how cursed they are.
Amy, please, cut a fringe into your hair. I'd say bangs but you know it's an aeroplane not an 'airplane' thus you're clearly from a literate country and know what a fringe is. But that sixhead is not a good look, a fringe will turn you from a 3/10 to a 7/10.
@@bashkillszombies HAHA
@@bashkillszombies why should she care what you think....
Anybody that has not flown a small airplane and has the means to do it, should do it. As for my own recreational experiences, it’s right up there with surfing and flyfishing as a great thrill. I recommend the Cessna 150/152. That Little plane float like a butterfly. Probably nowadays there are even lighter weight versions that are more fun. The smaller the plane, the more fun!
Every year for the past 18yrs....Uncle, what do you want to Christmas? Answer: Clamps.
@@riaandebeer6718 The correct expression is "You can never have too many clamps".
@@riaandebeer6718 .. truth
@@bruceharvey8810, you understood the intended meaning of their statement well enough to "correct" them. This would seem to indicate no correction was necessary.
Uncle, why does Santa need to visit when you know damn well how to craft your own 3/4" steel pipe mutherclampers?
My dad was the same way.
I rewatched this years after the first time, just to have a moment of bliss.

I appreciate anyone who can paddle a good J stroke but when she can also fabricate her own wood canoe from scratch it's humbling. Props! (not just the aviation kind)
I finally understand where Xyla gets her love of Total Boat epoxies, she literally builds boats!!
I've been told I put the fun in funcle but this man set the bar where it truly needs to be.
I can't wait until my nieces and nephews ate older
I think Xyla has one of the coolest families ever!
perfectly played "no not yet!" 10/10 uncling.
So I found this channel by way of this old Tony and his secret Santa video, and I picked the canoe build because it's one he mentioned. I can't tell you how glad I am. This is amazing! Everything, from your enthusiasm, to the craftsmanship and knowledge from your uncle, to the beautiful materials, and last but surely not least, the original music by your aunt and uncle and friends. 0 what a fantastic video! You've earned my respect, admiration, and subscription, just like that. Thank you!
Same here, TOT sent me. I'm absolutely impressed, the positive energy that radiates from this channel is unbelievable. Take care.
that secret santa builder tradition got me to discover lot of new builder channel!! I was only following the Hacksmith then found out about this old tony, look mom no computer, collin furze, xyla foxlin !
Their Music is fantastic, his craftsmanship is the envy of almost if not all others, and he obviously loves you. I can tell by the way you relate to each other that he is the uncle that taught you to stomp thru the mudpuddles, not only in youthful exuberance but also the Mudpuddles of Life. Treasure him and gift him a video Camera with the condition that he set and tell it the story of his life.
*XyLa* The Engineer with the style and elegance of a couture runway model. Wow.
Who says that Gen-Z and Millenials aren't interested in actually building things. This is first class craftsmanship! The chevron decoration could be interpret as "canoe goes this way".
Right? Also, StuffMadeHere, Alec Steele, Simone Giertz!
Yeah, it's really not the case. There's a severe lack of masters out there willing to take on an apprentice for a wide variety of trades/crafts.

Great canoe, but your relationship with your uncle is much better. It was not only gift of canoe, but also time spent together.
The thing about The Music is it is not AI, and it is written by the family. Sounds Great Darlin.
That was great!
Can we see a hacksmith canoe, maybe it has jet engines XD
@@declansb641 it would probably transform into a submarine. Like the one little jet boat from James bond
@@n1elkyfan Yes, and it could have targeting torpedoes
I just realized, in every shot of your uncle he had a smile on his face.
Because he’s lived a happy life. And probably a lot of that has to do with his craftsmanship and the joy he gets from that and rural living, not to mention a wonderful family. And to think that the world of most people will never get to experience rural living! I am as lucky as uncle, my situation looks just like his, and I am so thankful.
Where it ends usually depends on where it starts ❤ the support of family like this is remarkable. And what an amazing boat.
Gorgeous! The cherries on top were the story and music behind this
Canoe building, corset wearing, engineer and pilot with quality music. Well yes, I do think I will subscribe. You earned that.
And to add insult to injury, she had to be gorgeous.
I am telling you man, life ain't fair 😂.
@@GGGG_3333 Not to mention her goofy sense of humor. :) Sounds like the perfect woman.
I envy you for having such a cool uncle who taught you how to build a canoe. God bless that man.
OH MY GOSH! The child pics are adorable!
Xyla, you are such a delightful person. A real original.
This video is everything good in the world: family, craftsmanship, being outdoors, exercise. I love this video.
I grew up on the rivers of Alaska. My best friend, Mike Caldwell, taught the canoeing merit badge class at Lost Lake Boy Scout Camp in the interior. We were part of the Midnight Sun Council. Watching you build this canoe brought back memories of canoeing with Mike. My wife and I did an eight day canoe trip down Birch Creek from 90 miles up the Steese Highway. The trip was on our first anniversary. We put in up near Eagle Summit and had to portage about a mile to get to the river. From there down to the bridge at 160 mile took 8 days. We had two canoe's, Mike and our friend Steve Olsen were in one canoe and Edy and I were in the other. I'll never forget it, though it was 45 years ago. Mike is gone now, and I miss him. You are blessed to have a family that values you and gives you good outdoor skills and experiences. I noticed your skill in handling the paddle quietly and using a J stroke to correct the direction of the canoe. May you live a long life and pass these values onto your children and grandchildren.
Thanks for sharing these memories Randall!
Beautiful Craftsmanship. Very well done and you wearing a dress and proper hat for your maiden voyage was the perfect ending to the video.
I almost have a heart attack every time I have to portage my old red canoe. The way you just lifted it off your shoulders and put it down so easily was awesome. But super jealous. Coveting.
Absolutely beautifully made. Now that’s the uncle everybody wish they have in the family. Kudos to the both of you.
That's the child everybody wishes they had. Work ethics, respect for craftsmanship, eagerness to learn and be hands on, and actually wants to hang out with her family.
You are truly blessed to have such a wonderful family. It is a gorgeous canoe and you will always have the satisfaction of knowing you helped make it with your own two hands.
wish I had a cool uncle like that. beautiful.
Not sure you can have a better uncle than your uncle. This was great, and I'm glad to have found your channel!
that is what I took away from this too! what a great family tradition!
How awesome, you have an amazing family and what a story you have to tell your own one day. When I was 7, I got to build a small sailing dinghy with my dad and to sail it almost every week with him till my late teens. I'm 60 now and they are still some of my fondest memories.
I think this is the sweetest project you've done
Did anyone mention the cool videography? The whole video, build, and music were a joy to behold. Thank you!
Having a 20 year career owning a business that manufactured composite aircraft propellers and then making guitars after that...this video is most satisfying.
I know your patience and your upper arm strength.
You have a good uncle. Treasure family.
The climax: your uncle handing you the canoe from the upper floor of the barn and you catching it and handling with ease and elegance. And - a real nice-looking piece of woodwork. Congrats!
I watch your video's because I find them entertaining and educational. I share them with my young daughter because you are an amazing role model.
You are on the road to a satisfying life. Don't let anything discourage you.
I hope I can convey how satisfying that was to watch. When I was 11 Y.O. I was the "bowman" in a cedar strip canoe for a two week adventure in Washington's Puget Sound. It's a memory that will always be with me and returned watching this build.
Beautiful boat, but this video is about so much more than a canoe. That was the pinnacle of your Uncle's canoe building career, having a whole month to create a functional work of art with someone he cares so dearly about, shoulder to shoulder. As he continues to build these canoes it will now be a much more lonely affair for him. Yet, he can draw in the memories of having such a wonderful month teaching and working with you to keep him energized. Be sure to call him and your Aunt from time to time, just to say "Hello". That will keep them full of life for many years to come.
Great to have an uncle like that.... God bless
wow, just wow. Xyla,, just a fan, Mechanical Engineer. it must be something in us.. I too must make, work, improve, modify everything.. lol..... your canoe and your uncles work, just beautiful. thank you again.. Eric
First step to building a canoe: buy 5000 clamps
I was wondering why they're always sold out... 😆
That's boat building for you.
Lol that's any hand wood working. I do a lot of lathe work and use a ton of clamps.
Fundamental shop rule: You can never have *enough* clamps...
I make a lot of doors, and I don’t need one tenth the amount of clamps, more curves demands more clamps, there’s some formula there for Zeiler and her buddy at veritasium To figure out.
Fantastic video editing! Well done! All of the audio levels (background and voices and voiceovers) were very well equalized! The background music was present enough to add, without distracting or minimizing your voice. Very fine line, and you nailed it!
It is awesome that your uncle takes the time to teach you how to work with wood. He should get the uncle of the century award.
Awesome uncle.
One day you will teach your kids.
You probably won't ever see this post. But I used to work for Jamestown Distributors JUST as we started looking into and launching the Total Boat Line of products. I'm really really glad to see it getting good reviews. Thanks for the awesome content and for bringing up some old memories for me.
no clue why youtube put this in recommended but i could not stop watching :P
Oh the Love!!!! blew my mind... an Uncle so great.....aahh ..... Family Family Family... such a wonderful gift... eeeeeehaaaa
Man your uncle was so happy to do this with you. Great Vid.
That was just an absolute joy to watch and marvel at. Your uncle is an exceptional craftsman... and your enthusiasm and willingness to get involved in the build had me hooked from the thumbnail! I would have loved to have had that opportunity back in Scotland as a teenager! Beautiful, just beautiful!
My dad and I made a canoe similar to yours when I was about 13. Ours was 16 feet and weighed about 67 pounds. The ribs were white ash and the planking was red cedar. We covered the outside with canvas and put about 12 coats of lacquer to shrink and make the canoe waterproof. I think the gunwales were white ash.
Thanks for a trip down memory lane.

That Canoe is a wonderful peace of beautiful artwork.
I was gonna watch for a few seconds, ended up watching the whole 20 min..great craft!
OMG are you kidding me your whole family is freaking talented, god the pressure of growing up in your family lol
I love you show by the way
Yes and thats a really pretty canoe .
When I first moved to New Hampshire in 1999 my first job was with Newfound Woodworks building cedar strip canoes and kayaks. They are really beautiful crafts, strong, functional, light and responsive.
Reminds me of building radio control airplanes when I was a teenager.... Lots and lots of sanding! You skip on the sanding and it shows not to mention the performance suffers. I learned a lot with this video. Thank you!
Building my first canoe now. This video was one of my main resources, very helpful. One thing I will say to anyone else planning a build if you're using multiple sources of information make sure the techniques are compatible. With the product I wanted I would have saved myself a lot of grief had I been consistent with the methods in this video. Also if you play it at half speed Xyla sounds drunk, but the music always sounds good, might have to buy a cd.
LOL on the half speed thing! I had to try that myself! 🤣
Amazing build, and you really committed to the "8 miles that way" bit
Well done. Best Uncle ever!
Beautiful, I love woodworking! I love those Mahogany motorized boats, too). I am a design builder (in the architect profession for 44 years). I first saw your bass build, then your Teardrop Camper, (I love the vintage ones and Airstreams) and now this canoe build. As a dsigner I love your projects. I have designed my first electric guitar (out of Hawaiian Koa wood) that one of the top Jazz guitar players really likes, (asthetics and sound) wants me to build him one. While in highschool, (1973) I designed fiberglass sufrboards myself way before youtube, no teachers).
You are blessed, stuff like this is what makes life worth it.
This is probably the single most satisfying video I've seen... Well paced and informative. Congratulations on a beautiful work of art - and best of all, done with family!
Old Tony sent me this way. Glad I stayed to watch. You have a new subscriber!

So many good things. You have a smart Uncle. He's now passed along a tradition and skill that is not at all common. More common Up East but not many other places... Gotta feel great to know you made your own cedar canoe. Beautiful sky in some of those shots.
Very rare special person you are.
I saw this vid a while back ( a couple of years I think). Today, somehow your vid making your own camper popped up into my vid to watch. Perhaps because I watched Ame-in-a-van vid - she also made her van. So I watched it, to the very end. Got interested then watched another one: moving to your new workshop. Then saw your vid regarding pageantry 😮! Then, you made a one of a kind base guitar, got your own plane ✈️.
Back to this canoe- which you made which made me come back to after seeing it years back. I appreciate ❤ people who are creative.

Sorry it took me a minute I’ve watched 32 of them you’re the first one I’ve seen that knows how to paddle
It seems like your uncle had very good intentions for your 18th, however, you being who you are, the best niece ever, had other plans for such a generous gift, from your Aunt and Uncle. I have never met a more loving couple, they gave you a great vacation, all the materials and tools, and his guidance. He gave you the best 18th birthday gift ever, even though you waited to make it your own after graduating college. I do believe it was after you graduated college? If I remember that correctly? Awesome video, it was great seeing you and your Uncle do this together, and now you have it in a video. Something you can cherish for the rest of your life. Happy birthday, what a wonderful gift
I built one of those! They are remarkably forgiving to building, but you touch each piece of wood like 30 times... ripping strips, routing cove and beads, joining strips, laying each strip... then sanding and fairing.... I LOVE building cedar strip canoes and kayaks!!!!
It is totally fascinating for me to see how someone with such dedication, craftsmanship and precision builds such a beautiful canoe. You can be very proud of your work. Thank you for taking us with you and best regards from Germany 🙏🤗
