How to make a DIY plywood canoe - from start to finish

- Weigh only 15 KG. You will be amazed to see how the canoe takes shape. See how well it goes on the water at the end. This mixed time-lapse video shows the build of a 14ft open canoe using two sheets of 3mm cheap non-marine grade ply without the need to wet or steam the hull during the process of pulling the two gunwales together, also called the torturing process. No stitch and glue. Just a small bottle of superglue ($1) and a lot of clear packaging tapes.
Please subscribe to watch a series of episodes of the build with step-by-step instructions together with failures and how to make good. I’d bet a whole bunch would start building this easy-to-build canoe. Yes, you can make this too.
Please leave a comment if you are interested to see the step-by-step videos building this canoe.
I am not a builder. I just like to make things. I could not believe it myself as the canoe takes shape. I decided to use non-marine ply and there is no way I can wet and steam the hull during the torturing process. I told my wife if it breaks halfway during building, then I can just forget about it. Thus using the cheap non-marine ply.
I did not use any powered tools building this canoe except a cordless drill driver when attaching the gunwales to the canoe. Which you can avoid if you have plenty of clamps. The gores or cuts remind me of a birch canoe build. The torturing reminds me of the way the Aboriginals of Australia built canoes using tree bark in the movie Ten Canoes a 2006 Australian drama film directed by Rolf de Heer and Peter Djigirr and starring Crusoe Kurddal.
I was inspired to build this canoe when watching Peter build his using the fly-mo design. I used a thinker timer for the gunwales. The bamboo seat is also quite heavy. The decks were heavy too. But 15 KG is perfect for me. It took quite a while to build this canoe. I work on it after work and more hours during the weekend. I had to wait for summer to apply resin and fibreglass.
All the materials were from bunnings home depot. I had to do a timber scarf joint for the gunwales. I had to re-do the workbench as the building progresses. I enjoy doing woodwork. I have also built a stand up paddleboard with a plan. I just roughly follow the shape of a stitch & glue touring open canoe by JEM-Craft. I will share the standup paddle boat building soon. I have asked my son to draw the plan too.

Awe .. thank you so much 🙏 you make my day. I wanted to paint it but like you said, the beauty of wood is all over including the decks 🥰🥰.
Wow, very impressive. Another glass of wine and I think I could do that too🤣
Lol 😂. Thank you 🙏
Lol 😂
Videos like these give me the confidence to attempt projects I probably shouldn't. Thanks for sharing.
@wes326 thanks 🙏. I am glad you are inspired. Happy building 🤞🙏
Awesome build! I'm sure it would be a pure delight!
Thank you so much ☺️. Yes it is. 🙏🙏🙏
Looks great! Can't wait for the build videos!
Thank you 🙏. Very soon. 😊
Thanks for sharing!
You’re welcome. Happy Building
Incredible!
Thank you 🙏. It is an amazing concept
YESSSSS! I I received the free plan, thank you!
You are welcome, Olivier. 👍🏽👍🏽
Wow 🤩 that’s amazing! Well done 👍🏽
Thank you 🙏
thanks for sending a copy of the plans, can't wait to try building this.
You are welcome. Happy building 👍🏽
really nice build, thanks for the inspiration!
Thank you so much. It’s not perfect but she’s fun to paddle. Kind of tippy in the beginning but now I prefer taking this one out. I am not a builder but I have help my dad using hand tools when I young. You should try making one. I will share the plan soon
Wow..... awesome job 👍👍👍
Thank you 🙏 so much
Thanks for sharing this great canoe build, what a masterpiece! ❤✨🇸🇪
Thank you so much 😊
Wow, nicely done.
Thank you so much 😊
Hi Cornelius. Thank you very much for the free plans!
🤩👍🏽🙏
Great video! And thank you for the plan
Thank you and you are welcome 🙏. Happy Building
Amazing!!
Thank you 🙏
That is a great canoe, so light but well built, and your building comments were instructive. Thank you! Happy paddling.
Thank you so much. I will post the detailed instructions in the building episodes. Also will share the plan. I like paddling this canoe in creeks and rivers. Easy to handle. When I get to a rapid or huddle, I will just portage like carrying a bag. 😊👍🏽
Amazing work! Bravo!
Thank you, mate! I will have to start making the building episodes. The details making this canoe is so amazing. I was prepared to use it as firewood if anything bad happens. Mainly because I use cheap plywood and I did use any hot water or steam. Every time I pull the straps during the torturing process, I was just prepared to hear a big crack. But somehow all good…errr not really.. I will show in the next video the fails and how I corrected it. Thanks again, bro
Great job !
Very handy light weight craft too .👍
Thank you so much. Yes it is. Easy to make too
Very nice, look forward for the step by step videos, thanks
Thank you so much 😊. Yes. I will post them soon. You will enjoy the torturing part. It’s magical. The canoe just taking shape as you go.
Amazing video! I got the plan, thank you!
lol 😂. Sorry for missing the plan in the earlier email . You are welcome. Happy building. 👍🏽
Cornelius, thanks for sending me the plans. Much appreciated !
You are welcome. Happy Building 👌✨
Hi Cornelius. Thank you so much for the free plans. They look really nice.
👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Awesome! Never seen clamps like that
Thank you 🙏. Can’t afford better clamps ☹️. Those clamps I got from $2 shops. Just to hold the gunnels in place. I screwed the gunnels in place. Someone commented I should have remove the screws once the glue sets. Very good idea actually. Thanks again, mate!
Nice build! Thanks for sending me the free plans.
You are welcome 🤗. Good luck with the build. 💪🏽👍🏽
Nice! I'd like to see the whole series. Beautiful!
Thanks. Yes! Will post soon
Awesome 👍👍. Love my canoe! Like they say, I need a good paddlin'.
Thanks. Amen to that, brother. Yes, I have not been paddlin’ for 3 weeks. 😀
Finally! Beautifully done! Well done, Cornelius. Amazing work. Can’t wait to see the detail videos on how you build it. Thanks bro 😎
Yep. Finally! Thanks. I will start preparing the build videos
Great piece of art ! I love it .Thanks for sending me a free copy of building plan . 🙏
Thank you 🙏
Thanks for sending over the plans for this I'll start collecting the parts soon. Really appreciate it!
You are welcome. Happy building 👍🏽
Where do I find a copy of that plan?
Please email me at corneliusoutdoors71@gmail.com
Thank you so much for the plans. So glad it's holding up well without using marine grade plywood.
You are welcome, Jeff. If done right, most Non structural 3mm ply would work. There are two most important steps. I can assure you one of it is not the rolling or bending or torturing part. The rolling part is the easiest and interesting part. You’ll be amaze how it starts to take shape. I’d say that is the highlight of the built but also the simplest. Happy building 👍🏽
Thanks for the beautiful time-lapse video of the construction of the canoe. I received the free plan you sent by email and look forward to building it someday... maybe this winter.
👍🏽 nice. Yes, Winter time is good time work on it. Don’t rush. Do little by little. Just remember, most epoxy brands need 25C and above to cure. Build when in winter but glassing in summer
Beautiful work, Good Sir.
Thank you, Ian 🥰🥰
Beautiful work, well done 👏
Thank you so much.
Great canoe, thank you for sharing the free plan!
Thank you and you are welcome 🙏. Have a great time building the canoe.
Hi Cornelius, thanks for the nice teezer video of the build; makes one want to rush out and do the same. I would very very interested to build one myself, and look forward to your detailed videos and access to a decent plan. Thanks a stack!😎
Definitely! If you see the detailed video you would rush out to get the two plywood and start marking the gores. The free plan is not easy to use. Yes, I will share the plan in building episodes soon. 👍🏽👍🏽
Very nice! I built a strip kayak. I can appreciate the work you put in.
Thank you 🙏. Strips? So much work on that one. I am not sure if I ever will build one in the future. Well done!
Great work. I will be trying to make one myself soon
Yes, you should. It is easier than it looks. The most important thing to ensure is that each side and end should be the exact copy of the other.
The Horizontal Clamp trick on the gores was gold!
Thank you 🙏. Amazing how the boat thanking shape. I feel like building another one ☺️
NICE JOB
Thank you so much 😊. You should built one. Very light. Very strong. I even paddle small stream using the canoe. Very buoyant too. Works perfect on shallow water . I will share the detailed built soon.
Wow! So simple! Gotta make same!
All the best 👍🏽
Cornelius sent me a set if free plans. Awesome, friendly soul. Super excited to get started on my canoe. Looking around for plywood now.
You are welcome, Kurt. All the best.
Also I have not told you how nice of a job you did the final product looks awesome
🤗 thank you so much 😊
Creative way to make a canoe. Very impressive. Thank brother.
Thank you, brother. Waiting for you to come over here and take it to the lake.
Amazing video! I received the plan and hope to get started! 😀
All the best 👍🏽 .
Amazing build mate!
Thank you so much. You can build one ☝️
It was nice meeting you.
Good job
Thank you, bro 😎
Amazing! This is a cool project.
It is. Thanks. You should build one. I will share the building episodes soon.
The best canoe i ve seen so far .. tnx for sharing
Awe 🥰 thank you so much. You made my day, Sam. Stay blessed!
Nice project, well done.
🙏🙏 thank you
Great job, my friend. One of the more interesting “DIY canoe builds” I’ve seen. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you so much. 🙏. You have made my day.
Hi Cornelius. Thank you so much for the free plans. I will try my best to build a canoa.
My pleasure, Mehmet. All the best 👍🏽💪🏽
Dear Cornelius, many thanks for sending me the free version of the plans!!!
You are welcome 🙏. Happy building.
Very good!!! May friend
Thank you 🙏
Unreal!!
Thank you 🙏. I m not a builder. I was amazed seeing how it taking shape. I only understand the concept when I started torturing the ply. Every pulled I was just praying for no cracking noise. In fact no noise at all. Amazing design. 👍🏽
Impressive build and good camera work and editing. Thanks for sharing
Thank you so much 😊. 🙏
Beautifully done!
Thank you so much 😊
Consider building one. 😊
@@corneliusoutdoors Yeah, I have put this on my list, once I build my shed, I should have enough room for this canoe.
👍🏽👍🏽
Well done on the build and the video great work :-)
Thank you 🙏
Amazing! Really like both the canoe and SUP you have built. It is attracting more people like me to the watercrafts DIY.
Nice 👍🏽. Thanks, Kevin. I am NOT a builder. I just like to try. You should. You’ll never know how much you can do until you try. That SUP has no plan. I watched so many videos and I bought some plywood and start building one. No stitch and glue. I use 1/2 inch nails to a 1/3 inch beam. Super easy. I will ask my son to draw a simple plan and share soon
That has the sweetest curves I've seen in any plywood canoe.
Awe … thank you so much. I guess that is because no stitch and glue of a few panels together. This canoe is made of just 1 panel (2 ply joined). Easy to build if you know what to do. No special tools. Just a hand saw, cutter knife and lots of clamps but you can do without the clamps if you screw the gunnels in. I am preparing a step/by-step manual and episodes of the building at the same time. Keep in touch 👌😊
That is very cool and very beautiful 😍 well done mate, definitely something to be proud of!
Thank you so much , Amy. I so look forward to joining you on the Murray one day.
Thanks for the video. Ive been wanting to build a canoe like this for some time because it looks like its extremely light weight. Great job.
Yes it is. You can build it as light as 13kg. I am 120kg. I use thicker gunwales. Hardwood decks and bamboo seat. Happy building. If u need the free plan email me at Corneliusoutdoors71@gmail.com
What a labour of love excellent job excellent presentation well done
Thank you so much 😊 🙏
master craftsmanship
Awe … thank you 🙏.
Good job and well done. Would love to try this one day.
Thanks, Mike. I will post the building episodes and plan soon. You can build this in less than week once you know what to do. If I were to make another one, I think I would complete it in 6 days. In this video, I took quite long. Most of the time trying to figure out best ways to go about it. Cheers, mate!
Very cool. Look forward to seeing if I can get a copy of your plans. I’d love to have a go.
Thank you. Yes, please email me at corneliusoutdoors71@gmail.com
impressive
Thank you, boss!
Great idea! Well done.
Thank you. You should build one ☝️

I did! Currently im building my fifth project. (Rattle and canvas) Allways searching uncommon solutions. Allways the proces And design on itself very important. Regards.
@@dowrony I saw your canoe, brother. Beautiful canoe. Well done. Your channel deserves more views. I like the one with an engine. Did you expoy the canvas? I left some comments on your channel. hope to hear from you.
Genius
Thank you. Just lots of dreaming 🥴
Bravo, great work. I wanna try too.
Thanks. You should. Once you start doing it you’ll see how easy and interesting the process can be. All the best.
Very inspiring, Cornelius! Thank you 🙏
I would love the plans for this beautiful project please!
Awe 🫢 thank you so much. Please send me an email at corneliusoutdoors71@gmail.com
Absolute master canoe builder, very impressive, cheers my friend 👍😁💪🏻
Thank you so much, my friend. Awe … you have made my day. No, I am not a builder at all. This canoe truely very easy to build. “If you know what to do “ 🤭😊. Therefore I am planning to prepare an extensive step by step on how to build this canoe. Just wondering if I should charge a small amount of money for it 😁. The plan is free for sure but how to read the plan, the step by step are not easy. Thanks again.
@@corneliusoutdoors if you’re not a master then no one would know that by looking at your canoe build , maybe you could sell the plans and directions and if you do put me on the list, thanks again for posting 👍😁💪🏻
🙏🙏🙏
No way 🤯 challenge accepted 🤙
👍🏽👍🏽💪🏽💪🏽
👏👏Cornelius you make the build look effortless, very enjoyable watch
Cheers!🥃
🫠🫠 thank you 🙏
It would be a easier I knew what to do. I had to figure out each step and try on waste plywood. I will share those moments soon
@@corneliusoutdoors looking forward to it👍
very nice! step-by-step videos would be fantastic.
Thank you 🙏. I have all the videos but I am bad in editing and uploading videos. I’ll try my best. But if you want the plan for the canoe, email me at corneliusoutdoors71@gmail.com
I'd love to see the step by steps please looks amazing 👏
Thank you so much 😊. Yes! I will post them soon 🤞🤞. I like making things but not editing videos 😒. But will try my best 😊

Just received the one page free plan. I can't wait to start.
Happy Building, mate. 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Many thanks for sending me the free version of the plans Cornelius! Looking forward to the building series.
BTW decent quality 3mm plywoord is hard to find (it starts at 4mm here in the Netherlands), but when I do find it I'm interested in purchasing the full Building Instructions!
You are welcome 🙏. All the best. I’ll check out for you too. I am also working on a building kit cost. I will let know. You don’t have to hunt for 3mm ply by then. 👍🏽🙏
What a technique impressive man
🙏 thank you 😊
very nice
Thanks, Rob
The very best idea of this is that that no plan is needed! Everything is so simple to build a board according to everyone's needs or size! A little more additions and a sailing board can be built. Thank you very much for your excellent job!👋👍
🙏
No plan? NO PLAN?? You think this is just off the top of his head? There are DETAILED plans and exact measurements that must be made.35 pages of instructions. That piece of printer paper on the worktop isn't a coater. He glosses over them in the video because they are the boring part. There is more prep work measuring and marking than there is cutting and bending. The only thing that takes longer is waiting for the fiberglass to dry.
SOURCE: I bought the plans for this boat and will be building it. There are LOTS of measurements that need to be exact for the boat to be square. Build this by just watching the video and let me know how it goes.
@robertwills7022 thank you so much, 🙏. The best comment I’ve ever heard. You made my day. Thank you thank you.
Thanks Cornelius for this video / idea! Very generous to offer a free plan. I received it well - thank you for that. For starters I did print it on Paper and build a small paper boat to get a first idea of the feeling how to magic 2D to 3D - I can recommend it. What I like on your boat is the easy approach on material thickness, with 3mm being sufficient and resulting in truely light weight :-)
Where did you find the plans? I'm a pretty good wood worker and would like to build this canoe but I'm a crummy computer operator. If the plans were somewhere on the video, I didn't see them.
Thanks
Thank you, my friend. I never thought of printing it on paper. Yes, any 3mm non-structural plywood would be okay. Do a test by bending the ply along the length grain direction. As long as the ply can bend to almost a very wide "U" would be okay. In the Building Instruction, I mentioned a few sections of the building that are very very important. The highest stress location for example when bending the boat. Happy building.😁😊
@@maxarnold2617 Please email me at corneliusoutdoors71@gmail.com I will send you the pdf free plan. If you are a good woodworker this canoe building is easy for you. I had to file the gores at many places to get them to close properly. I am not good at using a handsaw. I am worst with jigsaw. Overall I only use a handsaw, cardboard cutter knife, a cordless drill, lots of sandpapers, and clamps and that's about it.
Thanks for making this video. This is a fantastic build !
Thank you 🙏
Отличная работа! Тоже собираюсь создать рыболовный морской каяк! Видео вдохновляет!
Thank you 🙏. All the best. Happy building. I take this canoe for fishing a lot. If you need the plan, email me at corneliusoutdoors71@gmail.com . Take care 🙏
I am so impressed, it looks so good, it was just two sheets of plywood and after fiberglassing it’s gorgeous, looks completely professional (I’m no conoer)
Thank you so much. I grew up by the river in Borneo so canoe is my everything 😁👍🏽
Thanks for sharing this great canoe build , and plans to . The wisky botle shud be at the finish at the work . 🙃🙃🙃
Lol .. thank you. Quite cold 🥶 in morning 😁. I took a while to figure out the gore measurement. The whisky helped, I guess 😂
great looking. and im sure its light weight would be of great use in many circumstances
Thank you. Yep. Perfect for portage. I like paddling up or down small streams and creeks. Also a network of swamps. I tow the canoe on bicycle too .
It looks much smaller once in water. Nice work
Thanks. It does. I have another canoe: 18ft stitch and glue touring canoe. 900mm wide at the midpoint. Huge! But looks smaller once on water. Have a great day, mate!
Amazing Builds 🙂
Thank you so much 😊. Wait till you see the building details. You can build one easily.
@@corneliusoutdoors i have a small garage i would like to try the building process but i do not have your patience Sir .. thank you .. will watch the next video for sure
Lol 😂. Thank you. What if I tell you that you can build this in a week. 🤔😊👍🏽
Looks amazing! I need the plans for this canoe!
Thanks. Wait till you see how easy to build one. I am preparing the step by step videos. I will share the plan then. You can even build this in your bedroom. 🥰

Awesome
Thank you so much 😊
Something tells me his skill set is a few notches above mine. 👏💪
Awe 🫢, thank you 😊. I only show the good parts. I made many mistakes. One end got a crack when I close the bow. But managed to patch and cover the flaw
From someone who has built two canoes myself, great job, very well done 🙂
Thank you so much. The thinking and planning are the most difficult part. Once started kind of okay and improvised along the way. Made a few mistakes. Almost gave up when one end cracked. Managed to patch the crack with fibreglass and continue. Phew!!!
@@corneliusoutdoors Yes I know where you're coming from, its easy to fix up
mistakes and still make it look good !
😜😂🤪👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
If u don't mind me posting on your thread here, that's the mark of an experienced craftsman, making a mistake or something goes sideways n knowing how to fix or incorporate it so it looks like it grew there👍👍
No , not at all. Thanks, Clint. If I am to build another one I will plan it in such that the boat is made of 4 sections and each should be the exact copy of the other.
Amazing build! This is by the best and the most low cost method of building a canoe. So far I have watched this video more than 20 times.
I need to build this. Wish I could get the plans.
Thank you so much for sharing this video
Hi Ali, yes, I have the plan. Send me an email at corneliusoutdoors71@gmail.com
I have the free version of the plan. I also have a comprehensive step by step version which I will ask for a small compensation. With the step by step, you won’t have to refer to the video 😊
Thanks, Ali. Yes, you just need 2 pieces of 3mm plywood, 8m x 1m fibreglass, some epxoxy/hardener and timber for fittings. If you plan it well, it can be ready for the water in a week. 👍🏽
Yes the step by step version will be better.
I have received the free plan. Thank you so much
I got the free plan today, I hope that I can make it just as well as Cornelius does😊😊
Lol 😂. All the best. Let us know how it goes
Really enjoyed the video but what is even better is the response time for the plans. Next day service. Now to start.

Wow! 👏👏👍
Thank you, Lin. Nusi payan ateng ji libu subscribers. Lihei lelan. Seng beloh lan hanoh kui pejoh. Sayu kah ikam lim, yah?
Wow I thought for sure you’d use some heat to bend the ply that mush smoothly . Amazing it held that much of a bow without splintering
Thanks. It’s an amazing design. I couldn’t believe it myself. Those are just a normal ply. Pine ply I think. I told my wife. If it breaks I will just make some small projects like tissue boxes 😊. In fact before I proceed further I took a cut out ply (2 x 3 ft) and bent it to almost a perfect letter U. Made scary noises but it was okay. I will share that part in the building episodes. The canoe bending process was a lot easier than I expected. As long as you start tightening the straps from the ends to the middle, it was so easy. No strength needed. A child can do that bending part. Amazing design, really.
If I owned that many clamps, I could afford to buy a canoe. LOL
Lol. Those are cheap clamps . They don’t work well. That is just holding the gunnels in place. I screwed the gunnels in. Those clamps are $1 -$2 each I think. I bought from China town.
Hi amazing video would like blueprints on measurements. Amazing craftsman.
