Agree with 100%. I'm old school football from the 60's but that wasn't old school at all. Players like Dick Butkus was hard nosed and wanted to put people out of a game or make them remember who hit them. It was all by hitting as hard as possible for him. Not this stuff. The crown of the helmet only became illegal in the last 15 years or so. To be fair, Romonowski was an excellent linebacker. The issue is he took things too far. His intensity was really good until he took things too far, which he often did. The rules were a lot lighter back then. One of the famous sayings, I believe by Marcus Allen, "you have to be a little crazy to be great in this game".

When I saw the title first time (I saw it before this somewhere else and knew who it was about) I thought, oh, Conrad Dobler--still do when I hear this phrase--he was much worse than Romanowski because much more was allowed when he played in the 70s. But history only begins with the birth of the maker of these videos.
The mental place Romo put himself in before games in unlike anything I’ve ever heard of. I can’t repeat it on CZcams but if you look it up his playing style makes a lot more sense

Players like Rominowski have been weeded out of the NFL. He was so damn scary. You never knew what he would do.

Targeting was not illegal back then and fans actually wanted to see more “big hits” like that. When I was growing up they actually had cheers encouraging the team to injure other players to take them out of the game. It’s only since discovering the extent and seriousness of CTE that things changed.
He played in an era before concussions were heavily recognized and targeting was not a rule yet. Horse collar tackles weren't even illegal yet although that wasn't Romanowski's style. Either way though, he got away with a lot more than he could have in today's game
Lyle Alzado was pretty dirty too.

I think a different, former Raider, was the dirtiest player in NFL history was Jack Tatum. He made a receiver a quadriplegic with a viscous hit in 1978.
And it happened in a preseason game. 😳
Tatum was just a hard hitter.

Love watching you guys. I played Highschool football in Texas. Then the game was much different, I graduated in 1997. Our coaches taught us that football was a privilege, a rite of passage. It's a game of imposing your will on the man across from you. Football is not a contact sport; it is a collision sport and a combat sport. We play football when we are not fighting a real war. This is where we wage war in peacetime. We knew what we were getting into.
We could lay a receiver out in the first 5 yards from the line of scrimmage, and he was free game as soon as a finger touched the ball. Quarterbacks could get hit just like everybody else. They were praised for their toughness and bravery for standing in the pocket an taking the hit to complete the pass. A proper tackle was plating your facemask in the numbers on the jersey of the opposing player, wrapping your arms around his waist, driving your feet pushing the crown of the helmet upwards into the chinstrap and driving the player into to the ground.
Some coaches did preach dirty play, but our coaches never taught us, nor did I ever believe in trying to go for a knee and taking someone out of the game that way. Thats cheap and weak. You hit him hard and clean, and if he doesn't want to get back on the field with you, then you did your job. Blood makes the grass grow. "He didn't belong here anyway. Go play baseball or something else and stay off my field."
I understand trying to make the game safer, but for me football was THE sport where we could test ourselves, test our bravery and our limits as a young man becoming a man alongside our brothers. If you remove too much of the risk, you cheapen the reward. Keep doing what you guys are doing, God bless you and Merry Christmas.

Played a league basketball game and 2 times that game I had to take a step back. Man, it is tough dealing with kids that dealt with zero consequences.

It is funny. I watched him play and considered him a hard-nosed, old school LB - a few questionable "heat-of-the-moment" plays, but never thought of him as a sociopath. This video was an eye-opener. That being said, there are a lot of NFL players with rap sheets full of infractions and fines like Romanowski's. Truth is that you have to be a bit nuts to play in the NFL, and some are more nuts than others. In no way condoning this guy's behavior - just acknowledging that there are more guys like him in the NFL that we care to admit.
Going back to the 1970s, Conrad Dobler an offensive lineman was noted for his dirty tactics. Going back even further, Art Donovan a defensive lineman for the Baltimore Colts in the 50s and 60s was noted for some of his bad on field behavior. Years later he made an excellent guest on talk shows telling stories of the good old days of the NFL.

I am surprised that opposing teams would not decide revenge is a dish best served cold. I'd spend the rest of my career hunting down his knees. Not right, yes. But if the League wasn't doing anything about it... He'd have to hurt people from the DL.

Suh has flown off the handle and done a few not-okay things, but he isn’t/wasn’t even on the level of dirtiness of a Rodney Harrison (lol for some reason I typed Dangerfield at first - I almost didn’t even notice before posting either) or Hines Ward, let alone the genuinely unhinged Romanowski (incidentally, is Suh still in the league? feel like I haven’t seen or heard about him in quite awhile)

Lifelong Broncos fan and I hated that he was on those Super Bowl teams. Romo is one of the most disgusting players in history. They don’t even touch on his use of racial slurs here either.

I can proudly say that I was hit over the head with a trash can by Bill Romanowski. At least I'm pretty sure it was him. Or him and another player. I grew up in Brookline, MA, and my best friend lived right down the street from a bar called MaryAnns. It was just down the street from BC, so it was the big BC bar hangout. One night, in around 1984 or so I was in the bar and the place was full up and a lot of the guys were BC football guys. Naturally, someone started a fight, and it turned into an all out drunken college football player fight. We tried to get the hell out, but got swept up in it, and although I was hammered, I distinctly remember being shoved out of the door onto the sidewalk. Then I see Romo in the crowd throwing an old aluminum trash can which hit me enough that I don't remember anything after until I woke up the next morning in the Brookline PD in protective custody. Thank god the sergeant in charge was my best friend's father, so in the morning he just let me out and I took the T home. But they won the Cotton Bowl that year with Doug Flutie and the miracle throw to Doug Phelan, so it was worth it.

Everybody hated Rominowski. I doubt his own mother liked him. He is not a representative of the norm. He was to the NFL what Bill Laimbeer was to the NBA.
Was he dirty, yes, but that wasn't that unusual years ago. Used to happen all the time. NFL used to be a lot dirtier and tougher than it is now

Romanowski eventually became too much for the Raiders. As you continue on your journey into the NFL history it will become clear how awful of a human being you are if the Raiders can no longer deal with you.
Romanowski played football like us old guys use too. You had to or get destroyed. We played thru injuries of any kind . I played and practiced with concussions now I'm paying for it like so many others . A broken arm ,sprained ankles ,boke ribs and a knee injury. It was a different time. Every game was war .

This video shows to me how much the game of football has changed because those hits were not illegal back then. Salaries in those days we actually still quite low because free agency was quite new back then. I will admit I hated him and I was never played in the NFL because his attitude. It was like he enjoyed being a psychopath and in a game where you are only one second away from a possible life threatening injury players like him should not be allowed to participate.

It's the fact that spitting in or near your mouth? Nevermind in general is f*cking disgusting, the texture/bacteria in that for some and the complete disregard for you as a person, (the act itself rather then the result,) for some that's going to be worse then physical pain. It's the other way around for you? Sure but for others? The disgust and the added offense of spraying bodily fluids at someone like an animal is going to be worse. It's adding insult to injury. But also its not like they were okay with the physical hits he did.

@@elazybelleorr2472 First of all, you get more bodily fluids from someone's mouth when you are kissing your partner. So, the bad hygiene aspect is overblown. It is really a socially repulsive thing to do--it is a learned behavior to take insult to spitting in many, but not all, cultures. For example, the Massai of Kenya have a tradition of spitting on others and it is considered a blessing and a sign of respect. Really. So our strongest part of the response to someone spitting on us is the culturally learned response that it is a sign of great disrespect--I have that response, too, of course. But to break someone's jaw with the crown of your helmet (intentionally, that is) or to break someone's finger intentionally during a game, or to strike someone after they have clearly stopped fighting (a "sucker punch") is a univeral sign of disrespect and exponetially more harmful than getting spit in your face (unless the person knowingly is passing on disease--which is not the case here). Moreover, Romanowski, having grown up in our culture knew full well that he was showing disrespect--his full intention. In summary, intentionally causing physical harm the way Romanowski worse physicially than the spitting and is universally more harmful and disrespectful than a culturally learned response to spitting. If you can find me a single example where what Romanowski did physically to these players is considered socially acceptable in that game context, please do. I have an open mind, but you won't find it. Again, spit in my face instead of breaking my jaw, finger, orbital ridge (with the vision and memory problems that followed that).
These titles are stupid---"...in history"--sure if history started with your birth. Conrad Dobler makes Romanowski look like a boy scout. And there were others during and after Conrad. Eye-rolling lack of knowledge about the past, but I guess for the guy who made this video, Romanowski was a long time ago. Sheesh.

Man, just the little comments between you two while important things are being said is annoying.. even what they are showing on screen. Sometimes the guy to the left doesn’t catch it because he’s too busy looking somewhere else for some reason.. even if it’s for two seconds.. 🤦♂️🤷♂️🤫

I'm not certain but I highly doubt he was punished for breaking Meggett's finger. It's hard to discern who is doing what, and hearsay isn't good enough, even with a broken digit to show the ref. It could have happened during the play, they need to SEE Romo trying to do it in order to penalize him.
Also it isn't your fault obviously because you aren't as familiar with the sport and it's history but the hit on Collins was not even seen as that dirty. Probably didn't draw a flag, and I can promise you he wasn't punished further than the fine. If Collins jaw didn't break, he probably wouldn't have been in any trouble at all. You guys consistently underestimate just how ruthless and violent the NFL used to be, in particular before the 2000s.
That was just a normal thing in those days.. now, not everybody aimed at your face, but lowering the helmet and trying to killshot people was totally normal and accepted. It was part of the game, if you wanted to play offense and make big plays, there was always the chance you could end up losing your teeth.
I miss it, to be honest. I understand why it had to be abolished, but it's not nearly as fun to watch anymore.
