"Son of a bitch stole my move" was a callback to the end of Good Will Hunting where Robin Williams' psychiatrist character reads a letter from Will played by Matt Damon which ends with a phrase that itself was stolen from Williams earlier in the movie and he responds to himself saying, "Son of a bitch stole my line."

So, fun fact: the actor who plays Edwin Akufo, Sam Richardson, is who Sam Obisanya is both named for and mostly based on from a personality standpoint, since Sam Richardson has a reputation as just being a lovable, pleasant, super nice guy.

I initially had a difficult time reconciling his character in Ted Lasso with his character in Veep. He was brilliant in both.
He seems to have a knack for playing the odd man out. In Veep, he was the only character who was actually a decent person and remained so throughout.
In Ted Lasso, he was the only character who never had even a moment of redemption. Even the ultimate villain Rupert had some small redemption, granted with a big assist from Rebecca. Okufu had no such moment.

Sam and Rebecca - US tv comedy show "Cheers" from the 80s. Why Cheers? The actor who played Norm on the show (George Wendt) is Jason Sudeikis' real life uncle. Lots of low key Cheers references scattered in the series

If you think about Nate's story until now, he started out being the kitman who was bullied by the players and basically got no respect from anyone until Ted showed up. He got love from his mother but no affirmation from his father. His first major break-through with the players was when he roasted the players in the locker room and motivated them to win against a club they hadn't beaten in decades. The players did not hate him for his comments, but instead showed him appreciation and respect. Ted gave him attention and praise and even got him promoted. His next lesson (from Rebecca) was to stand up for himself to get what he wants and he turned it into spitting on his own reflection to give himself confidence. When he was praised in the press, his own dad put him down for being proud. He twisted everything so now he thinks he has to put someone else down to make himself feel better.

Apologies if you got this and just didn't mention it in the edit, but when Nathan says "Kill some birds with a rock" it's another example of him messing up common expressions. He means "Kill two birds with one stone." I don't know if that's just an American expression or not.

The irony of Edwin Akufo's choice of home for his African team, Casablanca (Morocco), is that it is closer to London than it is to Abuja or Lagos in Nigeria. It is also a city where the official languages are Arabic and Berber (it its dialects) and the next most common language is French. Casablanca already hosts two major Moroccan football clubs, Raja Casablanca and Wydad Casablanca.
That said, the reason I think it was chosen was the association with the 1942 classic film and we know how much this show loves to reference other media. I do wonder if there are any hidden quotes or references like there are with some other episodes/films.

So many pop culture shows/movie references throughout this series. They obviously had that Rom-Com episode with so many. You asked about Sam/Rebecca which many have answered below. I didn't read all of the comments, but I love the, "son of a b*tch, stole my line." which is a reference to Good Will Hunting. I'm sure there are plenty I don't get, but they have alot of little easter egg references that help make the show great. Especially on a re-watch when maybe you aren't as involved with the plot and recognize them more.
