- At the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON 2019, Kenenisa Bekele stages a brilliant comeback to take home the trophy, but misses Eliud Kipchoge's world record by an unbelievable 2 seconds.
Here are the last 2 kilometers, when he finally realized that the world record was in reach. - Sport
I know how he feels. I missed the 60 Meter World Record by 2 seconds myself.
haha
Lol
😜
LOL
For a 60 meter that’s far off
The GOAT of distance running without a doubt. Kipchoge is obviously the goat of the Marathon but Bekele is the greatest when considering all distances.
And to be specific he is the u disputed goat of XC
Absolutely agree.
kipchoge also dominated in all distances
5k and up
@@enzomartinez-vaughan8886 When exactly was he going to dominate the middle distance? come on.
Insane how many people don't realize this happened in 2019
Yeah I thought it was recent because of the upload date
If anything, it's insane the uploaders weren't able to think for a single second that this representation could cause misunderstandings. Terrible job on their end, but blaming the viewers is easier I guess?
Given that every course is different, the world record has a fuzzy definition in marathoning. Anything under 2:05 is basically a godlike performance.
Very true. Also, I don't think it's a coincidence all the world records in marathon over the past 20 years have been broken in Berlin and nowhere else (this course must be easier than any other currently known).
@@firelordplayz It’s flat. The weather is cool. The roads are in excellent shape. And the race is always well managed.
@@AvgDude Gotcha, that makes sense! As far as the weather goes it reminds me of Oregon in the U.S. where many (longer distance) running records are being broken as well.
@@firelordplayz Oregon has nice weather both men and women's marathon world championship records were broken this year. Besides that I don't think there are any world records broken there tho
Can someone even imagine winning a marathon but still feeling incredibly incredibly sad
Still the greatest long-distance runner we have seen in 5k and 10k.
Kipchoge beat him in 5k, world championships, before he moved on to the road.
@@denisdaly1708 He did.Once.
@@denisdaly1708 In total between 5000 and 10000 they competed 13 times, Bekele won 11 of these races, set three world records and won three Olympic gold medals, come on up on the track there is no comparison between the two.
El Guerrouj beat him in the Olympic 5000m
@@marcchrys What does El Guerroij have to do with it? I was talking about Bekele and Kipchoge.
Official time from my latest Marathon: 3:00:01 - I can totally relate... 😭
that's a great time.Congrats!
still a pretty good time. u a athlete
You missed the world record by one... hour. JK tho, great performance.
Thats insane
That’s excellent running. Congratulations
Bekele is a legend, a phenomenon, a superhuman. He inspires me like very few other athletes do.
Beans are privileged
I'm also only 2 seconds away from a world record. Except it's the 60m WR...
lol nice one
😅
Kipchoge has just extended the record to 2.01.09
So smooth,so strong!
Great form. Congratulations 👏🏾
Simply inspirational to watch
Brilliant effort!!
congratulations bekele but long live the king kipchoge 😁
The Legend, Kenisa Bekele, Much respect brother
😲que fenómeno 👌👍👏👏👏
Unbelievable to see Kenenisa Bekele’s performance almost to smash the Marathon record so close gap, I believe he has the capability to do it, maybe next time! I am super happy to him back!
Kipchoge did 1:59 for the first sub-2h time ever. He will be at the top for a good while, I think.
yes but 1:59 doesnt count as a racing world record because it was aided with changing pace makers
@@Skateboardfreakist Ah ok, that's what I had assumed
That was three years ago. He came third at Berlin last year. With all his injuries it's unlikely this Bekele will be back.
Legend
Bekele is a legend and a running hero of mine.
2:01:41 a marathon, insane!!!
Kipchoge is not human, he is the greatest runner ever in modern era.. Maybe his record could broken in several years again, but we need to waiting for 1-2 century to find a new runner as best as Eliud kipchoge 🔥
This man is better
agree Kipchoge is the best Marathon runner...But when taking into account all distance running (track, x-country). Bekele is by far better overall
I am a huge Kipchoge fan yet for a decade Kenenisa dominated Kipchoge in all races they was on. Kenenisa is far better than Kipchoge in the overall judgment. Love both of them.
Admiración total por K. Bekele y E. Kipchogue
respect
No doubt the GOAT on the track...
But Kipchoge is the GOAT of the marathon .
Always sad that we never got to see these two go head to head over the last four years or so, I know there is some kind of stupid thing going on why they never race each other but as a fan I feel truly robbed. In official races they could never have anyone pacing them for the entire race everyone drops out with probably 20-30 minutes left. Imagine them pushing each other and then having to try and out kick each other over the final few minutes they would probably both have run sub 2:00 officially several times. Now they are both a little past their prime even though that is still better than any other runners on the planet. For now we will just keep enjoying their individual performances...
@@edwin5419 Work on your reading comprehension, my dude. David is saying that if they had actually been going head to head in marathons that they likely would have pushed each other to multiple sub 2 hour performances. He did not say that that has actually happened.
Imagine running a 2:02:49 and not even seeing the winner in front of you. Crazy times.
Ridiculous right
We got this next time Bekele 😍🥰🙏
I find it so sad that he missed the world record by 2 seconds! I still hope he could do it although time is running out for him...
Greatest middle distance runner ever
whatever happens Kenenisa Bekele of Ethiopia remains the greatest long distance runner ever....
*he is a cross country king(,winning 16 Gold medals)
*he dominated 5000m and 10000m for over a decade winning multiple Gold medals in Olympics and world Championships
*he held both 5000m and 1000m World Record for more than a decade...before Cheptegei of Uganda
the only man who comes close to him is Haile Gebresellassie of Ethiopia
People often use Bekeles versatility as a main argument for him being the greatest runner of all time. In fact all the events he dominated in the early 2000s are essentially the same event. They all fit inside a very small range of distances and are all trained in the exact same way. Think about it. Throughout all modern athletics, the best 10k runners in the world are also at the very top of 5k. In both cases the top runners also almost always have strong cross country accomplishments. When and if Kipchoge wins a third gold medal or wins all 6 majors the argument will finally be put to bed on who is the greatest distance runner of all time.
@@mathieudube6907 nope not even. Kipchoge might be 4th or 5th. 1st is Haile Gebreselassie. 27 world records. Kipchoge has 1? He hasn't dominated track or cross country either. Kipchoge isn't even Kenyas greatest. That is Daniel Komen
@@random-zb7fp komen. Really? Not one person on the planet who isnt a Komen enthusiast knows who Komen is. Although he was a very fast runner his contribution to the sport of distance running is negligible.
@@mathieudube6907 Go and see Cheptegei's cross-country running and compare it with Bekele's, non-existent comparison, nobody has been so versatile in running since Zatopek, Bekele is really the GOAT.
@@mathieudube6907 Is his contribution to the sport negligible? what would be Kipchoge's contribution? taking part in fake races for marketing? using new prototypes that ruin the meaning of the race, more famous does not mean better, the record of Komen in the 3000 has a gap on the second greater than the record of Kipchcoge and we are talking about a race of seven minutes compared to a two hour race, only those who follow long distance running for five years can think that Kipchoge is the goat, he is not even the best ever in the marathon, Jim Peters the man who overcame himself with the strength of endurance alone and not with prototypes is the best marathon runner in history, but then how can you say that Komen is unknown? The greatest record in the history of middle distance running.
He lost the seconds, quite ironically, when he overtook the then leading Legese. Bekele did not efficiently run in a straight line past him but took quite a big bend, maybe some ten metres more than the ideal line. Furthermore the street surface was a bit slippery.
I know right. That was an unnecessary curve he ran. He must have regretted later when he watched the highlights
👑
Bekele is the best
Bekele GOAT.
Damn it… hope this ll b a motivation for next time so u can break the world record
You sound like you've never run a marathon, it's incredibly grueling. Most likely this was his best chance to do it considering his age, heck, it's nearly impossible at any age.
@@antoniomontana5778 he made a mistake when he ran a few extra meters by taking a slightly longer route when he passes Legese at 35km
👏🙌👏🙌
Running that hard at the end of a marathon is just superhuman!
No, even Kenenisa Bekele won't finish that strong if he's taking the time to change his shoes. The runner in the pink shoes is Birhanu Legese, who finished second!
This was the greatest race.
Weirdly paces, had to take strange curves to surpass Legele, slippery road and still an amazing time.
This Is the 2019 Berlin Marathon. Kenenisa Bekele clocked two hours, one minute and 41.
How do you know that?!
Isn’t Berkeley 40 years old? That is completely insane!!! How do you even train for a 2:01 marathon??
Marathons dont care about age, best marathoners are all 30+
Cardiovascular peak isn’t until your mid 30s and there is another one in your 40s. Most people just have terrible lifestyles so they can’t take advantage of it.
this was 3 years ago
Bikele the greatest distance runnee of all time.
Kipchoge is greatest on marathon only.
The guy who set a world junior record at 5,000 that stood for 9 years and who outkicked Bekele and a prime El Guerrouj to win gold at the 2003 World Championships is "greatest on marathon only"? 😂🤣
I'd love to know what went wrong for Bekele at 30km. Image if he hadn't had this problem. Whatever it was it surely cost him 2 seconds.
What cost him the seconds is when he ran extra curve around Legese at 35km
@@random-zb7fp I must try to find the full video. I can't wait for Berlin 2022, I heard Bekele is on the start list with Kipchoge. I will be watching in Eldoret, Kenya.

Did u notice that at the beginning the shoes were pink and at the end yellow?
this was 3 years ago, why is it necessary to post it now?
What a pity.
How did he change shoes while running
The commentators did a good job, expecting a world record where it is not going to happen, from the start.
☹️☹️ anyway the GOAT
wow that's such a small difference, he'll have it soon for sure
Lol
Bro people are just built different now wtf
The number of people who think this just happened 😂
This was from 2019, before Kipchoge ran a 1:59 (non-certified) and before Bekele pulled out of a bunch of races due to injuries.
His only marathon since then was a 2:06 at Berlin a year ago.
This performance by Bekele took the steam of the ineos challenge
He lost it by surpassing Legele in a weird curve...
Incredible how strong competition made him lose the WR instead of pushing for it.
I know right. I wonder why he did that. He was shaking his head upon arrival to the finish line because he knew that was what cost him the world record
I also missed 100m record by 3 second
Imagine if the road wasn't slippery.
if he really wants to break records, go to japan. their marathon, half marathon races all end on the track surface which is weird even though marathons and half marathons are all "ROAD" races.
This is 2022?
2019
The uploader should've been clear
how did his shoe change while running ?
that was the second place runner
Well, he obv is in shape to break it, but man I can’t help but feel bad. All that running for so long, and just 2 seconds. Hopefully he breaks it in his next attempt
He didn't. His next attempt was 2 years after this and he ran a 2:06

Click bait man. This was 2019. Look at those bikers having a hard time keeping his pace.
Oh come on! Everyone knows when this happened 😂
how the f is that heart breaking - he won the bloody race
The two seconds was wasted by the bicker talked to him and he checked and it took him away from the rithim.
