  • Issue #22 of Velocity RC Cars Magazine will feature the full review of the Kyosho Optima 2016 Re-Release. Born in 1985, the Optima was a young racer's dream. Chain drive? Big Spikes on the tires? In 1985 that was Rad, now we see if in 2016 it's on Fleek or whatever word we will laugh at in 20 years or so.

    Gonna be getting an Optima. It was my first R/C back in '86. Loved it back then. Bashed it and never broke it once. Can't wait for it!

    I like that you guys put "ridiculous motors" in kits that some think should not. Why? Because someone out there will be tempted to try as well, and a bit part of your content's appeal for me is your opinions on the tests done with each kit. Great stuff--keep up the good work!

    just found your channel really cool, I had an optimal mid when I was younger was an awesome car and rc10t.... 2 of the best rc's ever made

    • @perfectsplit5515
      @perfectsplit5515 Před 3 lety

      Optima Mid was the most iconic 4wd of the 80’s (even though it never actually won the worlds). It was probably the best 4wd that came with a mechanical speed controller. I would have been so much better off with one of those instead of Nichimo Exceed or Tamiya Avante I got for Christmas in ‘87 and ‘88. Both cars were very fragile and could not withstand a single collision.

    Yep, I was really surprised how stout the rere is! I was running a 4600kv on 3s in mine and wow it handled it just fine. That belt drive is super slick and although the shocks leave a lot to be desired you really can thrash this thing around a track and not worry about it breaking unlike a Nero I just had my hands on... Anyone considering this thing will be pleasantly surprised at how great it performs and looks.

    • @captainobvious9189
      @captainobvious9189 Před 7 lety

      Although i did change to the gold shocks, the red are fine.. The kit comes with optional piston which allow for higher weight oil in the red shocks, you can also buy the optional spring kit, i did, and reds are fine now...

    I wasn't trying to be cruel here, just an honest opinion based on what you did say. Yes, I did actually listen. If the video was run in normal speed, how much run time would it have shown? It would have been nice to see the review actually show the car running at full speed and showing what it can do with its upgrades and modern tech. They were a GREAT car back in the day and still are now. My disappointment wasn't so much based on the words but based on the video itself. Really not trying to hammer you. Just being honest.

    I'm 58. So I guess I'm old.
    Did you try the chain setup?
    With some mods this was the poor man's Custom Works car. I have an Kyosho Slingshot which was a last gasp attempt to keep the Optima relevant. It's belt driven and it did not take long for a rock to get into the rear diff housing and destroy the belt. Now there are new Optimas and new belts. I still have two of the older chain drive Optima's and eventually will get around to bringing one of these up to modern electronics.

    • @vrcmag
      @vrcmag  Před 6 lety

      Michael Upton we used the belt. Tracks have changed. No more rocks!

      I'm not sure what wing kit that is, but it sits too far back. T-Work's has a wing kit for these, i got one on my Optima, IMO, it looks better than this one...

  • @ChristopheChardon
    @ChristopheChardon Před 5 lety

    Optima's transmission was perfectly engineered, silky smooth, even with the chain. The Gold shocks (Those which set the reputation of Kyosho having the best shocks) was a great improvement over the leaky red's, same for the belt drive. Reliable, fast and easy to drive. She was the track.queen until the CAT appeared... I had an original Javelin and a Turbo Optima

    • @perfectsplit5515
      @perfectsplit5515 Před 3 lety

      But unlike the Schumacher Cat, the Optima (and all its variants) included a mechanical speed controller. So in a way, it was a better deal.

    Kyosho was always to expensive for us Tamiya budget boys back in the day , Kyosho really was ahead of its time , very polished with a smooth drive train that makes some modern rc kits look crude.

    • @vrcmag
      @vrcmag  Před 5 lety

      Hammer Home you don’t remember the price of the Avante? Also the OG kit of this car was chain drive and didn’t look as pretty.

    • @hammerhome7879
      @hammerhome7879 Před 5 lety +1

      The Avante was out of this world cool , but 3x the price of a Fox or Frog and just as fragile, all I remember is Tamiya's being broken most of the time , ABS plastic parts made Tamiya rich.

    • @perfectsplit5515
      @perfectsplit5515 Před 3 lety +1

      @@hammerhome7879 Avante with the Technigold motor included - first 1/10 rc car to break the $300 barrier. Ironically, it couldn’t even finish a race because of its fragility.

    • @perfectsplit5515
      @perfectsplit5515 Před 3 lety

      Most Tamiyas back then were closer to being toys. Tamiya wasn’t on the cutting edge of technology and innovation like Team Associated and Kyosho.

  • @deusexaethera
    @deusexaethera Před 6 lety

    I'm not sure why you thought it would be weak. Look at the way it's assembled. It's practically an Erector Set. There's not much cheap plastic in that kit.

    • @vrcmag
      @vrcmag  Před 6 lety

      Shawn Elliott things broke back in the day way more than now. Schumacher used rubber o-rings.

  • @rcmikeklein5512
    @rcmikeklein5512 Před 6 lety

    8.5 motor really,,, unless belts are made out of "unbreakeum" a10.5 would be plenty and maybe the car and belt will last more than 5 runs, but having had the original it was awesome then and the new one I have now is just as cool as it was back in the day.

    • @vrcmag

    I love RC cars but I do get frustrated watching them being run on BMX tracks and Jumps. Those jumps are hand built and packed. They get swept as well. Loose dirt for BMX is no bueno. Nothing more frustrating than seeing RC car marks on jumps I’ve put the work into.

    It would have been great to see the car move in anything but slow mo and maybe here you talk about the car as it is now and not in some retrospective. Curious how old you are. Just wondering because you talk like the 80's were a million years ago and all the technology that was around was already all beat up and ready to break. Honestly, let down by this video.
