A little over a month ago we bought a 2023 MDX Type S. I was one of those that used to say it should have 400hp at that price point but after test driving and owning one I can say for the money this SUV is a great value and power is more than enough for your daily driving needs. Now 400hp would have been really nice but the 350hp and the torque is nice down low so its pretty peppy around town! The BEST thing about this SUV is the way it drives and handles with that air suspension! Its like having 2 SUVs because in normal and comfort its Lexus smooth but in SPORT mode thing turns to a SPORT SUV and you can toss this thing into turns at speeds that should not be allowed in a 4900 lbs SUV!! ALSO the 25 speaker 1000W ELS sound system is AMAZING!!!! The ONLY thing that I'm disappointed with is the mpg! I feel this is 2023 and mpg should be better with all the technology available. It gets the same mpg as my NA 2003 MDX and WORSE mpg on the highway (my 03 MDX can get 23mpg on a highway trip) and the gas tank is slightly smaller so you seem to be visiting the pump more often. All the SUVs in this segment that it's competing with gets better mpg and some even make MORE power than this. I love the pad to control the infotainment center (maybe I'm one of the few) because you don't have to lean forward and touch screen and its seemless when changing channels and doing things because you almost don't even need to look.
Now my SUV to buy!
Buy lexus..you wont regret..and higher price if you decide to trade or sell it
@@dolguldur4706if you won’t regret a Lexus, why sell or trade it to get rid of it?
Love your reviews Ben . I bought 1 about 2 months ago! I just love it! Oh you didn’t mention anything about the first ever for Acura adjustable air suspension. Really changes the dynamics of the vehicle!
Why do some cars not use touch screens? I find the non touchscreens ones more time consuming to use
Great video and I totally agree with you 😊
Bro. Love your reviews! One thing that comes a bit short is your driving impressions. Take the car on the highway, get to the point where you can do 0-60 and a few more things! Much love
Love this car. Amazing performance suv, it’s a lot of fun to drive…I used to work for Acura, I work at a Honda dealership now...I love how few you see on the road. I have a 23 TLX Type S, and in my area I feel like I’m the only one with the car. I have only seen one other TLX type s in my area, and it’s a peer of mine who works at the local VW dealership. But in LA county I drive everywhere and I’m the only type s TLX around, kinda cool 😎
Please Acura put this engine in a RDX type S
Never happen. Unfortunately!
The gas mileage was the killer for me on the Type-S. Luckily my wife didn't care about tons of power so we went with the 3.5L V6 FWD. 27-28 highway and 22-23 city all day. The new MDX is an absolutely fantastic vehicle for the price. I do not think you can get a better non-off road luxury SUV than the Acura MDX, and that is coming from someone who drives a Lexus GX 460.
So about how many miles to the tank can you get with this thing doing mostly highway miles??
Nice review as usual. *help* someone :) I just drove (2) 2024 type s - loved them. BUT I felt there was wind noise coming in from the left side somewhere. BOTH units did this. So - is this a normal thing on Type s? In fairness it's a very windy day today.
Have had mine for a week now, no unusual wind noise but I did notice some change in accustics in head/ cross winds once I added Thule racks. Its still damn quiet. If it was both vehicles on same test drive it 90% was wind affect. Was it only when traveling specific directions or angles to the wind?
🖐🔥🤣 4:10 I only “feel bad” about wasting time listening to a law firm on a car review site! Yikes,…avoid Morgan and Morgan Law!
I bought one of these 3 months ago. Love it. Was a little turned off by the drive by wire acceleration lag, but i slapped a pedal commander in it and it's great. Love it more and more.
Isn't DBW the older most common form of throttle control? What is a throttle commander?
Yea I’d love to hear more about this as well…I have a 23 TLX type S…
@@mrchad97z49Pedal Commander is an aftermarket device that you plug in between the cable that plugs into your throttle pedal and the throttle pedal. It takes the throttlle pedal position signals and re-maps them to many different profiles you can choose from so that the ECU gets a different throttle position input than what the pedal itself is sending. It's useful for cars that don't have different drive mode or throttle settings to make the throttle response more immediate/snappy or more chill, depending on your mood. You can pick the settings either on the Pedal Commander module itself (it's the size of a match box) or on your phone (it has a nice app with BT connectivity to the module). I got one for one of my cars that had lots of throttle lag, and that throttle lag is now gone, and it's as responsive as it should have been from the factory. I personally really like it. It changes your car's character completely. It doesn't give you more power, but the more direct throttle response almost makes it seem like it does.
Can you share the pedal commander info? I’m interested to learn more
This is a decent luxury suv. Probably a good competitor to the cx90 and gv80 and aviator
Acura is just fine. They know how to compete in the segment.
The MDX is the best selling luxury 3-row of all time. So yeah they're doing OK.
@@TheBreakfastLovereah their totally doing “ok”
Since when is Hyundai and Mazda on the same level as Acura?
@@armoplaya323 since you were stuck in a rock 😆
Mazda has passed Acura in the sub Luxury segment
Hard to get in any other vehicle after riding in one of these. Those massaging seats and the ride quality are no joke. I’ll probably never spend $75,000 on a car…but if they got rid of that push button shifter I could be tempted for this one.
17 miles per gallon in the city and 21 on the highway is a little bit disconcerting.
Fair. It's really the only downside to this car, other than the gloss black in the center console area, and the lack of a touchscreen (which, I have actually come to love as an owner of this vehicle, as my screen is always clean without fingerprints. Plus, I find the pad very intuitive and easy to use, and I only use the wireless apple car play, so the infotainment screens aren't frustrating to me).
New car prices! Geeeez....🤦♂️
It's such a shame that Acura didn't go all the way and make this RWD (/AWD). But then I guess that, from a packaging standpoint, going RWD would extract a real penalty from a cargo space and legroom standpoint.
is it a j series v6??
Yes. J30.
Acura trying to capitalize on the S type “Moniker”. Certainly a poor decision on behalf of the executives and the marketing team. This SUv is slow due to its weight, the price does not convey luxury as there is a bag load of missed opportunities that would have made this SUV worthy without the S-type moniker.
The entire 2nd row is an after thought, there is no luxury above what you get in the advanced model, still manual rear shades, at this point the rear seats should have had a very cushy captain chair, so as to have 4 custom chairs with lots of support just as in the front seats. I own a MDX 2011 with SH-AWD, 3.7L engine and 300HP. So how does this type S have 355HP?? The type S is for an NSX super sports car not a SUV.
Long term, they wont be selling many of these cars as Acura sells have declined this year. EPA is forcing every car manufacturer to streamline their engines down to 4 Cyl. Last but not least this MDX, is a people hauler, not a sports car. The folks at Acura need to understand their market, luxury, people hauler, with lots of amenities. Seems like the amenities are only for the driver and front passanger and forget the rest, bad move, families are the main buyers of this type of vehicle.
Acura did a much better job at type s than lexus ever could with F sport
What is the closest competitors? Durango SRT? Base Cayenne? Looks like it doesn't quite match the German equivalents, but it's also cheaper.
Closest competitors = Genesis GV80, Mazda CX-90, base BMX X7, base Mercedes GLS, base Audi Q7
I’d also add a telluride palisade or even a ford Explorer Lincoln aviator jeep grand Cherokee summit. And honestly I’d even add the grand Highlander hybrid max as a sort of competitor
@@bradstonesifer3398 I don't think any of these are considered performance SUV, maybe X7
@@naveenthemachine I meant as a far as a high performance SUV, not just any other crossovers
@@amobile_va the grand Cherokee has a quick phev. The Explorer st and base aviator are very quick as well
And the grand Highlander hybrid max is the fastest version of the grand Highlander
You barely even drove it to make a good assumption. Around the block is nothing.
Good car❤
Good car❤❤
Needs more power. I mean a 13 year old Ford Flex has the same power.
Once you actually drive this in Sport+ mode, you will realize that you absolutely do NOT need any more power. And, yes, I own one of these and am quite happy with it (so far).
Acura has to get away from all the mountains of piano black plastic on the dash. It's nothing but a dust, fingerprint magnet and will get scratched just looking at it. Terrible material choice
I thought about this, and I agree. It's not a total deal breaker if you look at like this. You can see when it's dirty, and know when to clean up. It's not a huge deal if you don't have kids in the front, or allow pets inside. I agree that it's not prestigious enough of a car to require gloves, although it is a way to prevent fingerprints. ✌️💙
Agree, really outdated. Maybe a change is coming next year?
From the land of America* lol
Why buy bmw when you have this around….
Faster engines.
For 75k, it should have better engine and tuning. Especially trans tune. Many complain about it. That’s why many have traded them in for Audi or BMW.
Honda engines smoke German brands in areas of engineering, quality & reliability…and by no small margin…everyone in the know about autos knows that; seasoned independent auto mechanics concur. Deciding on a vehicle involves weighing a number of criteria, and that’s where the MDX shines across a good many of them. Your comment seems somewhat dubious.
The new MDX transmission performance overall is quite good; Honda’s 10-speed continues to receive excellent reviews. This unit has been turned for performance in the TLX & MDX Type-S Models. Yes, there were reported experiences on one or more review channels of a shifting lag, when cornering only under certain conditions as I recall. One can reliably assume this is a programming issue that Acura likely has already resolved.
In comparison, check-out online BMW & Audi customer reviews & factory recalls. By comparison, Honda products shine!
How is this underrated?
Definitely not underrated. 75k, it should have more performance out of engine and trans tuning. 65k should be it’s price at max options.
@@ryanb8736 Well, if you are a good negotiator, you can get a 2023 MDX Type S Advance for $67K -- $8K off MSRP -- since the 2024's just rolled out. I recently got this deal at Chevy Chase Acura in Bethesda, MD.
It is underrated because it’s significantly faster than the grand Highlander hybrid max and the Toyota has more power and more instant torque than the MDX due to the electric motors
This is similar to the cayenne turbo or Escalade V
What? Not even remotely like those.
Not even close. Cayenne Turbo is in another league. Cadillac V is in its own league.
MDX S is in class with X7 base 6 cylinder option. I would rather the X7. Plus you have higher engine options in BMW. For that price, Acura is too much.
For a tad more, you can get an Audi SQ7. That’s insanely fast and amazing.
@@ryanb8736they don’t have the reliability of Acura
@@solomons5669 Not always true. I’ve been in car industry for 36 years. I’ve seen people blow transmission in MDX and Honda. Snap timing belts. Have failing moonroofs, etc.
The newer BMW and Audis are actually darn good now. If we were talking about 15 years ago, yes, German cars had issues.
Rule 1 with German cars. Stay away from 4 cylinders. Most complaints are from them. Stay away from daily driving true “M” cars, like M3,4,X3m, etc.
Best German parts are B58 6 cylinder engine. It’s the exact same one in Supra and Toyota approved it and helped BMW make it super reliable. You can also tune it to 500hp for cheap and reliable. That’s the Goldilocks of BMW engine.
German cars have the absolute best transmissions in the entire industry. Nothing even comes close. Honda and Acura had their stab at the German ZF, but failed horribly at tuning. Even the 10 speed Honda in house has a lot of issues. Honda and Acura had to replace many and had lemon law buy backs. Especially on Honda minivan.
BMW X5 with only base B58 is the sleeper and jewel out of bunch. Along with X7. The V8 is also great so far, but I personally don’t know it as well yet and will judge it in two years after it’s been out for total of 5 years.
Audi S and RS models are the ones to get. Audi has had a lot of knowledge of building them and gets a ton of help from Porsche and Lamborghini. Best companies all working together.
Porsche is another amazing company. Precision, amazing build, superb handling, and great reliability. Expensive maintenance though. Also long wait times to order vehicles. Some wait two years. I want a Macan GTS and it’s gonna be a long wait.
@@solomons5669 only thing I can say good about Acura is availability on most parts. Most is keyword. They also keep everything very tame. Transmission is tamed very low now so reliability is too priority. Engines are tamed back for reliability.
Type S MDX won’t even let you start in first in manual. They don’t want you to drive it fast and beat in it. Kind of lame.
Also many have experienced trans traction cutting off on corners. They cut performance to save rear axles. Lame.
This is why you will see many MDX traded in for higher performance vehicles from other brands.
Acura MDX Type S is great for mild driving. The MDX A spec is the one to get. No weirdness with it like on type S.
Overpriced acura on the market.. worse mg gas.. like driving a 1970 boat.. not good. It should be $20.000 less and be hybrid for better gas rating... ⛽️ sad
Underrated? I’d say overrated and overpriced!
