  • FAILED IN WCW | Wrestlers that Flopped!
In a prior video we talked about wrestlers who for one reason or another never managed to succeed in WWE. But world wrestling entertainment isn’t the only place where great performers have failed, as the exact same thing happened many times in WCW. But what are the biggest examples of wrestlers totally flopping in this once great promotion? Well, that’s exactly what we’re going to be looking at today.

Ya know, when I think of wrestling legends, the only Virgil that comes to mind is Virgil Runnels aka Dusty Rhodes. Michael Jones, aka Virgil aka Vincent among others, only comes to mind when I'm thinking of comedy gimmick characters who sometimes play a utility role. I feel like applying the term Legend to someone like that, for better or worse, is watering down the term that should be reserved for people who actually made an impact on the business.

Bulldog in 1993: Still relatively young, agile, could work and would've been World Champion had it not been for the Nightclub altercation
Bulldog in 1999: A way past his prime drug addict who couldn't even move anymore.

There was not much use in the worst drawing WWF Champion of the 90's, who wrecked Canadian Cities and american venues (best example: drawing 2,000 at the Meadowlands, the worst attendance any WWF Champion ever drew there) for the WWF in 1994 (most specifically, the Calgary Saddledome, Bret drew so badly there as Champion, the WWF just removed the city from their touring schedule for 2 years), who still holds the distinction of main eventing the worst drawing WWF PPV of all time. He just wasn't a draw, not even with the momentum of the Montreal Screwjob (it seemingly all went to Vince, who ran with it and never looked back)
It's best examplified by his Nitro debut. It drew a 4.1. The previous week got a 4.3

Actually, while Warrior was brought in to have a Hogan rematch, they DID try and get something out of him money-wise. His One Warrior Nation (OWN) was meant to take on the NWO. They had an entire program planned with Warrior, filled with tie-in merchandise. Unfortunately it was another WWE 1996 debacle and they quickly learned that he wouldn't help their brand in ratings or ticket revenue. Still, the pairing of WCW and Warrior seemed appealing from the outset and looked like a dream match on paper.

It’s hard to say Bret “flopped”. I would say he performed below expectations . But that doesn’t mean he flopped or had a terrible run. He was always in the mix and stayed involved in stuff. And did some good matches with mid card talent as well.
I’m a huge Bret Hart fan. I just think politicking in with Hogan and later Nash messed up his run. I think he would have been a good post NWO pivot point.
But I also think Bret was pretty demotivated at this point too. Despite the bad booking he just didn’t really have the same work ethic he displayed in WWF. It was literally just a paycheck for him. Lots of Bret Hart storylines were centered around Hart family stuff in the WWF. And that was never going to be a thing since WCW isn’t as connected to the Stu Hart organization as WWF was. So I think he was also hard to use

Bret's accomplishes in the WWF and WCW:
      - Lowest drawing WWF Champion in the 90's (best shown with the House Show averages: (3,703, even Nash drew bigger with 4,464)
      - Demolished Calgary with 2 horrendous shows (4,300 and 6,000 in the 20k Saddledome) leading the WWF dropping the city from their tour calendar for 2 years
      - Lowest attendance any WWF Champion ever drew at the Maple Leaf Garden (3,500), Meadowlands (2,000) and MSG (4,300)
      - Main eventing the lowest drawing WWF PPV of all time (IYH 5, barely 80,000 buys, again, even Nash did better with 100k buys at IYH4)
      - The 1994 Hart Attack Tour was the first WWF Tour in Germany that wasn't a complete sell out.
      - World Champion for the second lowest drawing Wrestlemania (12) of all time
      - His debut on Nitro bombed so badly, the rating dropped by 0.2 compared to the previous week
WCW would've been foolish to push him even more than they already did.

@@ShadowAngel606 it’s weird to see that he drew bad in Canada. I would have thought he would have always drew well there. I can understand other tours as champion not being as great for him. He had big shoes to fill with Hulk Hogan. And yes compared to Hogan Bret was just not at that level. Very hard act to follow.
Anyway his WCW run isn’t really that much works than his WWF run honestly. Like I said he was always getting pushed and always kept a belt around his waist. I don’t think he was capable of any more. Clearly WCW knew he wasn’t a guy you can build your whole brand around. So why bother?

I recall hearing WCW being described as the result of “the inmates taking over the asylum.” Hogan, Nash, Bishoff and a few others accumulated so much backstage mojo that they booked everything to their own personal gain. Evidently, they cut a lot of promising “upper mid-card” wrestlers like Jericho and Benoit off at the knees (“No heavyweight title shot for you!”) or checked the possible rise of other big name stars from other promotions where they could….unless you were Sting or Ric Flair, two guys with long and storied careers in WCW or even NWA.
I don’t know how much weight this story should have though. IMO, WCW for whatever reason signed some guys they legit DIDN’T know what to do with. Sabu, Sandman are cases in point. The “suits” knew damn well they’d never allow these guys to 100% “flash back” to the brutality of their ECW days but I hope they still paid well.
