- WORST I.C CHAMPS | Failed Intercontinental Champions
There was a time when the Intercontinental Championship was the most prized belt out there to great in ring performers. After all, it was the belt held by the real work horse wrestlers, people like “Macho Man” Randy Savage, Bret Hart, and Mr. Perfect. But over time the IC Strap would lose a lot of its lustre, and part of the reason for this was because of some truly terrible reigns, but what are the worst runs with the intercontinental belt of all time? Well, that’s exactly what we’re going to be looking at today.

Zack Ryder losing the Intercontinental Championship the night after WrestleMania 32 still hurts me. He could’ve lost it at the next PPV or something
Punishment for getting himself over
That's because he got himself over and not Vincent Kennedy Mcmahon
I laughed so hard when he lost it still makes me laugh anytime I think about it
My sentiment exactly.
Right
The way wwe treated the IC TITLE in the past is a bloody disgrace to the legacy of all the great wrestlers who held that title in the past. Randy Savage, Ricky Steamboat, Bret Hart, Mr Perfect, Shelton Benjamin, Rey Mysterio, Eddie Guerrero and The Miz made that belt feel special and more than just a stepping stone. Thank goodness for WALTER. He has restored the prestige of the Intercontinental Title. Andy, there was no bloody need for you to bury Test. That was un called for
His name is now Gunther
Only in WWE. He is WALTER to me.
@@zemox2534are you 9?
Zack Ryder (Matt Cardona) committed the cardinal sin of getting over on his own. Vince didn't want to push him.
First thought that came to mind was Ezekiel jackson. Didn't see him in the vid.
Yea like why is he in the thumbnail he was great 😂
He as definitely the worst
@@dannytanner82Exactly
He's the worst
The athlete makes the Belt, the belt doesn't make the Athlete....and seriously, No CHYNA on here?
Dishonorable mentions:
1. The Big Show. He wins the title from Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania only to lose the belt 28 days later to Cody in a Tables Match by... putting his own foot through a table.
2. Luke Harper. He beats Dolph Ziggler on RAW for the title but loses it back to Dolph in a Ladder Match, ending his reign at 27 days.
3. Marty Jannetty. While beating Shawn Michaels on RAW to win the belt was a feel-good moment, Marty only held it for three weeks before dropping the gold back to Shawn at a house show.
Good mentions.
Lol I remember playing WWE '13 and played as Cody vs. a friend playing Big Show in a multi-man clusterdlfxck (non-tables) match around that time. I ran at him and got back body-dropped through a table, and chokeslammed for the loss. I still can remember him cackling.
@@ryancarroll2886 😆😆
big show only won the ic title at mania because at the time he had a reverse taker going. he is considered one of the greatest big men ever and he was winless at mania. so he finally wins and it is for a title.
Yeah. Wasn't #1 like planned?
Some good examples of where winning a championship does more harm than good
Sable got pushed because the Vinces (McMahon & Russo) were obsessed with her. And the Rock's first run as Rocky Maivea with the IC title was likely the least popular in history. Ppl chanted "Die Rocky, Die" & "Rocky sucks."
I always remember the "die Rocky die" chants, but forget about his run with the belt. It was that bad
Damn
While that Rock promo on Billy 'Bob' Gunn is absolutely hilarious and brutal, it is completely overrated as killing Billy's push.
100%. The Rock had simlar promos with countless other guys. How about Y2J's debut? Not to mention the fact that The Rock himself was on the other end of some similar banter with Stone Cold in 1997. It didn't lead to Rock getting buried. Instead, getting put in that spot opposite the extremely over Stone Cold elevated his career, no matter how much trash talking Stone Cold did towards him.
Yes that right defend Dwayne it is not like he did not want to work with Billy and did not see any potential in him? Oh wait that's exactly what he did!! To be fair Billy was not ready to feud with Dwayne but the people's jsckass did not help matters by complaining to creative and burying Billy.
billy's lack of charisma and gas tank killed his push, not a promo.
@@zemox2534 The video and this comment make reference to the on-screen promo. What happened behind the scenes is another matter.
@stingrey1571 Billy had charisma dude. Stop spreading bs just because you do not like! Not his fault he was pushed into a feud he was not ready yet. Wwe fucks over any wrestler who is not related to dwayne or have you not been paying attention over the last decade!
My profile pic is the best IC title design with the white strap🔥🔥🔥
Ah, man of culture. That's the best design like the Big Gold Belt.
Dean ambrose was sleep inducing during his reigns
Who would have ever guessed that building AEW around him would fail with the general public 😂
I’m surprised Santino Marella wasn’t on the list. He became a great comedy act later on, but he wasn’t a comedy wrestler when he first won the title in the Milan Miracle.
His daughter is Arianna Grace in NXT
Milan * 😂
By the way, I was there live.
Billy Gunn still got cheered loudly in 2000, so it's not accurate to say 'few people cared'.
I loved The One Billy Gunn
"Loudly" is definitely stretching it lol. He got some cheers sure, but it paled in comparison to the reactions he got as Mr. Ass.
He clearly butchered what was supposed to be his main event push after KOTR 99 went back to being a lackey in DX then just got a random IC title run after DX split again with none of the Mr Ass or DX stuff that got him over. It sucked.
Curtis Axel tried to succeed his father, Mr. Perfect.
But the WWE failed him.
Also he wasn't good
He was CAW levels of bland both in personality and in the ring.
He had a good feud with Tyson Kidd on NXT . The potential was there . Perhaps if they had used common sense and named him something like "Imperfect " Joe Hennig ,maybe he would have been a solid midcarder.
He shouldn't even win the title if Fandango wouldn't have been hurt
The originally scheduled Royal Rumble 1992 match wasn't Hart vs. Piper. It was Hart vs. The Mountie. Piper slid in as challenger after Bret was removed.
billy gunn ass man theme was classic
I’d have mentioned Shinsuke Nakamura. Like good grief was the IC title basically invisible during the time he had it
Yeah, he barely defended it and his act with Rick Boogs was so bad. Technically it was not his vault it was wwe. Nakamura's presentation is now much better.
Nakamura is a jobber to more "popular " wrestlers like Seth and Cody. How is that better?
@@zemox2534But he's just as good in the ring as Rollins and better than Cody
That does not change the fact that wwe books him to lose all the fucking time.
Basically what happened is that the Intercontinental Championship used to be a belt for good workers that needed a championship but couldn’t have the world title. Now the IC title is just the mid-card title of a certain brand. Sad.
It is more than just a mid cars title!!@ have you been living under a rock!!! WALTER has made that title feel worthy of being a WHC
Because there is already two belts now. They treated whc like ic title. This is why they planned to give it to rhodes so he can increase the prestige of the title by not having matches every day and also mainevent in ppw while roman is out. But the fanbois cause riot forced wwe to change the plan
Like always you deliver a nice 👍 details 😊 My favorite 😊
I have no recollection of Curtis Axel beating Triple H lmao
I remember it only because I thought it was insanely stupid. Imagine a guy who has beat Taker, The Rock, Cena, Stone Cold, Orton, etc. cleanly also losing to Curtis Axel lmao
Poor Marc Mero I was a big fan of his and was happy to see him win the ic title but was disappointed in his run as he did nothing of note and was just used as a transitional ic champion to get the belt on triple h who by then had more upside then Mero at that point. And it also didn't help that they didn't book Marc Mero pretty well at that time as ic champion either.
I know after he lost to Sable, Stone Cold didn't want to work with him. That ended his career.
Man, Curtix axel has so much potential to be a star, Shame WWE didn't see anything in him.
Low charisma
Test had won many titles...a shame how he never won the world title though
you picked The Mountie over Ahmed Johnson or Marty Janetty? Yikes
I always saw the IC strap as a stepping stone to the bigger prize in the WWF/E, former title holders would go on to become champion but recently, it’s now seen as a joke title
Dumbass, Gunther is the current champion and most people agree that he's the best IC champion and he also has the longest reign
Maybe not now because is doing a tremendous job as IC champ for over 600 days and putting on bangers with anybody.
The title is not a bloody joke anymore. The only reason it was a joke was because that perverted Piece of #£%^^^ Vince treated it like crap through the shitty booking
yeah but prior to Gunther it had been a minor title for years, US title has been more important@@tharukaepaarachchi814
@@tharukaepaarachchi814 I’m glad he’s brought it back from mediocrity
This was my suggestion thanks a lot for picking it
even though it was a 2 day reign. it felt like mountie was champion for much longer. he took alot of promo pics with the belt.
13:22 I get what you're saying but, The Miz TOTALLY made the IC Title look waaaaay more prestigious than all world titles combined. And It's something we cannot deny.
Definitely made it a bright spot of WWE at the time
but we dont know how Ryders Run would have played out if WWE gave it more time.
@@nixda9326I agree. Ryder could at least beign given 2 or 3 months with the title to see what could've been of his title reign and decide if he could keep up until at least Summerslam of that year or something...
yeah, but i read already some comments that Vince didnt like it that Ryder got himself over without big help from WWE. Vince just likes to control everything. just ask Rusev.@@thelonewolf70x7
The miz cringe
The worst thing about Road Dogg winning the IC Title was that he was actually feuding with Al Snow and Bob Holly over the Hardcore Title at the time, while Billy Gunn was feuding with Val Venis, Goldust, and Ken Shamrock over the IC Title (as well as Ken's kayfabe sister Ryan Shamrock). Russo being Russo, he just randomly decided to swap Dogg and Gunn in the middle of their respective feuds for no apparent reason.
Take a shot every time this guy says “hell,”
The Mountie deserved better. Period. End of story. Amazing gimmick that unfortunately was taken too seriously by the actual Mountie's in Canada.
Lack of humour has existed far too long. Did cops hate Bossman's gimmick?
@@arostwocents To my knowledge, no. But I guess the RCMP was much more sensitive to it because he was a heel. I don't know if WWF got heat from cops when Bossman was a heel.
Shane Douglas WWF Intercontinental Champion as Dean Douglas 1 Day Reign
Could you do a video or series of videos. Of where are they now. Wrestler's who are in completely different careers
Zach Ryder & Curtix axel were 2 wrestlers who could've been used to their full potential, It's just a shame that WWE didn't give them the push that they deserve during that time.
I would not be surprised if Vince signed Marc Mero just to get his wife.
Some of those runs was due to poor booking test got over with that big boot Shane had all the tools
*It’ll forever irritate me the way this company completely ruined Zack Ryder. Sure he was never going to be world champion in WWE but I think he had all the potential to become one of the top mid carters throughout the 2010s if the company had actually given him a chance but if there’s one thing we know about this company is that they hate it when wrestlers get theirselves over organically.*
The trouble with the IC belt is the elimination of the Euro or TV belt so it necessarily becomes a lower mid card title rather than the upper mid card title it should be
Thank For the Video and Happy President Day 🇺🇸❤️🤍💙🦅🌟🥇🏆
Ahmed Johnson. The highlight of his reign was tongue kissing Goldust and getting glitter all over his face.
Loved the video. Some risky picks considering most of these wrestlers have a cult following, but your reasoning was on point.
I remember the night the IC title was dropped Road Dogg. With respect to him, its as if they were throwing the belt in the trash.
I agree with all except Marc Mero. Mero was a workhorse like no other and vastly under appreciated.
After watching hours and hours of wrestling documentaries at work, I can say with confidence that The Rock is a genuine asshole. He took liberties with chairshots to the head of Mick Foley, he absolutely buried Billy Gunn without going over it with him prior(which is something Rock is very big on himself), and in modern day, he just thinks he can come into the WM main event after not being on the active roster on over a decade, close to two decades, have a main event match with the champ and throw Rhodes, and expect ppl to eat it up. This is coming from someone who watched WCW and WWF from 98 - 03 with Rock and Austin being my favorite.
Rock has come back as a heel so you are meant to hate him dude 😂
Road dog holding that title in the middle of the attitude era was such a mistake. His ceiling was the tag belt, or if the team had to break up I’d say the euro/hardcore title. EVERYONE was over. That wasn’t a good reason to give him the workhorse belt
EDIT: I realize now that’s basically, no, literally what andy said here 😂
An alternate timeline where the rock doesn't bury billy gunn would be so interesting
cierto, ni me acordaba que Ryback había sido campeón intercontinental
I Love This CZcams Channel Wrestle With Andy
From 98 to 2000 the belt was almost worthless. Kinda the Same in the mid to late 00er. Only since 2017 the ic Championship is a workerbelt again
I remember that same Wrestlemania Zach Ryder was in a Snickers commercial with Ric Flair and Charlotte. I'm convinced that's the only reason he won the IC title.
Aw poor Albert I always thought him okay mid carder and I liked the instrumental version of the x factor entrance theme
This is wrong...Billy Gunn feuded with The Rock in the summer of 1999 but he didn't become IC champion until a year later in the fall of 2000. By that time he was in a feud with Eddie Guerrero
Dang.. I've never noticed that Mark Mero looks like Little Richard.. Little Richard don't get credit for nothing.😂😂
He was called Johnny b badd in WCW
honestly i often mixed up Test and Edge with the long Hair.
how they look nothing alike
really? @@greengamerguy623
They looked the same to me with the long hair also
i mean i knew who was who in Videos because they said the names. but i tought ooh they looked really much alike.@@georgekhaoletsa2004
Curtis Axel is 2 an 0 against Cena, and he is 2 and 0 against Triple H. That's pretty impressive. He won the IC title in a triple threat on Father's Day. That must have been booked as a tribute to Mr Perfect. Solid television matches in 2013. Six months as a transitional IC Champion, but basically holding the title for Big E's first push as a singles champion. The feud with CM Punk, the tag team with Ryback, the stable known as the Outcasts, finally tag team champion for the second time, this time with Bo Dallas as the B-Team. Curtis Axel always had his own fan-base, and he was able to "get over" with the fans in different ways for over 7 years. (Mr Perfect was in the WWF for 5 years). --- Axel was always one of my favorite mid-carders.
I was expecting The Godfather to make the list.
The only guilty party in Shane Douglas failing so miserably in both WWE and WCW was Shane Douglas. He did nothing but constantly complain and blame others, like Ric Flair in WCW, for his failures, while virtually doing nothing to change things up. Many say that that was the reason WWF didn't hire him back in January 2000, along with Benoit, Malenko, Guerrero and Saturn, even though he originally left WCW with them, leading him to returning to WCW in April of the same year, continuing to blame Flair for his failures.
I remember the 1997-9 Attitude Era well and I cant remember the IC champs during that time. Guess this vid is right 🤷🏾♂️
To be completely fair not many people can remember much from the attitude era and ruthless aggression era that wasn’t the main event scene or the upper midcard scene.
After Billy Gunn won king of the ring in 1999 the company was gonna make him a main event star. He was gonna get wins over The Rock and Triple H on the way up. But I heard Stephanie McMahon got in the ear of both Hunter and The Rock and told them that they put in too much time and effort to throw it all away by putting over someone like Billy Gunn
U should make a video on the tag titles n Royal Rumble winners please
They made Curtis Axel win the IC title on father's day. All that did for him was put on a microscope on he stating you are not like your dad.
I like X factor theme
I must be the only person on earth like X Factor theme song 😂😂😂
I know what I'm about to say can either be puzzling or mind-boggling. But here's a "What If..." Should the Undertaker had an IC title reign (despite the fact that he has done way more than anything else he had done in his 30+ year career in the WWE), would that be considered as him being a failed champion? Because in hindsight, the closest he would had gotten close for the IC title belt was against Goldust in 96, before Foley (then as Mankind) costed Taker the match, thus in the process preventing the Phenom to become a member of the WWE Triple Crown club eventually.
The one good thing about Ryback’s IC title win was the table for three with Him, Dolph Ziggler, and Daniel Bryan.
Cannot believe you didnt include Ezekiel Jackson
Ezekiel Jackson was a glaring omission here
Hart v Piper at WMVIII remains a gold standard pure wrestling match.
IC Title in the 80s: 💖
IC Title now: 💩
For some reason these videos are better with British commentators.
I didn't need to be reminded all these failures
Jacques Rougeau was a quality wrestler.
Imo two of the best IC runs have come in the 21st century.
Shelton Benjamin and Gunther
So they saying The rock is part of the blame Billy guns Reign was trash😔😔😔
I liked Curtis Axel reign I felt like it should have been longer
I reckon after the attitude era an a-train or Albert run would do amazing. He’s a brutal wrestler when allowed to be
What is the difference between the real title and tge intercontinental title?
In my opinion, there’s a difference between a time as champion that was largely uneventful and over too soon versus a long run that in turn didn’t make the championship itself feel that important. Example being Ricochet, my personal favourite wrestler of all time, who correct me if I’m wrong, only defended it once on tv and lost it in that first defence. (I forgot the name of the account, but there’s one on Instagram where the fantasy booked Ricochet as I.C champion and it looks really good.) Now compare that to the Miz, someone people for some reason think was a great Intercontinental Champion, but history shows he only had one good match with the thing, was always a mid card player, in all honesty, only made it feel more important because of his promos against other superstars like John Cena, Roman Reigns and Danielson about how pissed off he was.
Actually Ricochet successfully defended it 4 times on TV. But I don't blame you for forgetting it. If you wonder he defend it once against Sami, once in Triple Threat against Angel & Humberto, once against Jinder Mahal, and once against Shanky
@@fakhruddinhawari5516 Jeez, I don't remeber that at all. Thank goodness for Walter Hahn making the thing so much more of a big deal.
Oh man there’s some awful I.c champs for sure
10:33 Hart was supposed to wrestle The Mountie at the Royal Rumble not Piper.
There is a not a huge technical gap between the in ring work of Roadie and the in ring work of Val Venus who he won it off.
Seeing this list makes me so grateful that Gunther is the current ic champion. In fact, I had an idea that would've put the intercontinental championship back to the main event status, have Gunther retire brock lesnar at wrestlemania! Think about it not only would've made Gunther the man to beat in the wwe more than roman reigns, but it also would've taken the ic title back to the main event next to the wwe and world heavyweight titles! But thanks to Vince Mcmahon's lawsuit, that's not gonna happen.
Definitely should’ve included Ezekiel in the video. He wasn’t at that level with ring work, he was trying but not connecting with the audience, and his bring go-to was a meathook clothesline. He didn’t have any memorable feud after he won it.
The XFactor theme is one of the top ones man it’s such a banger.
Half the problem for Andrew Martin was the gimmick. "Test" doesn't really mean anything. It's like it was invented in two minutes on the back of a cigarette packet without any real thought. I can just imagine creative: "Okay, we'll call him Test because we can't think of anything better" which shows just how little they cared.
Bret wasn’t sick, nor did him considering going to WCW was the reason behind him dropping the belt. The plan was always to be Hart vs Piper at Wrestlemania 8 with Piper coming in as IC champ. Hart negotiating with WCW was a coincidence.
I mean, you could just say "Albert" was the IC champ and leave the explanation there. Arguably he could've had a decent run as A-Train (particularly during the period Heyman managed him) but when your gimmick is "Albert", you don't cut promos, and you wrestle in street clothes you're toast before you even get to ring work. (Matt Bloom for what its worth, was probably better worker then he really got to show)
Test's douchey immunity run post-invasion was arguably the highlight of his career, I'd argue.
Chyna’s IC run was awful as well, the good house keeping matches and Jeff Jarrett were so poor and even Y2J struggled to get a half way decent match out her.
I forgot Ryback even was IC Champ
The Miz And Razor Ramon Are The Best Intercontinental Champions 🏆 Of All Time 🐐
Who is the best world champion in wwe history you think all
10:35 why he say the Mountie like that?
Before Road dogg the Intercontinal champion the hallmatk of the ic champ was the ability to go in the ring.

bret didnt have the flu. he was in contract negotiations. he was considering a wcw run. the belt was taken off of him.
I still find it odd that Billy wasn’t a bigger star. Like you said he had the look, he was good on the mic and he was a great wrestler. I think the trouble was he was trying to make it when the rock, stone cold, Jericho, angle, hhh etc were there. You have to be very very special to compete with those guys. The roster was just too stacked at that time
Russo RUINED two midcard stories by just swerving and putting the IC on Road Dogg and the hardcore title on Billy Gunn despite Gunn vs Shamrock and Road Dogg vs Big Bossman being the damn feud. Yes I’m a grown ass man still mad about this decades later
I always thought Dean Douglas didn’t get a fair shake
