A small detail throughout the film is that whenever Gothel is making contact with Rapunzel, she constantly touches her hair. Whenever she hugs Rapunzel, she touches her hair. Whenever she kisses Rapunzel, she kisses her hair and not her forehead.
Meanwhile, Eugene is always brushing the hair out of her face, and touching her face, or hands. He wants to get to HER, and is trying to get the hair out of the way.

Can we all agree that Eugene Fitzerherbert is the best Disney prince?! The way his character develops throughout the movie is astonishing. He was an orphan who had no friends or money, which resulted in him becoming a thief who believed his only option to be happy was to steal it from other people, but eventually realised he is capable of being happy after spending time with Rapunzel. That’s so beautiful and I love gentle and protective he is towards her, too. Especially in the show. He never gets frustrated by her, he never doubts her, and he sticks by her side the entire time! Plus, he’s funny, as shit! Zachary Levi is one of the best Disney voice actors, *PERIOD!*

I also see Eugene cutting Rapunzel's hair to have another significance. Rapunzel's hair essentially kind of serves as a timeline of her life, having been with her since she was born, and continues to grow with time while it was never cut. So to me, Eugene cutting her hair so close to her head kind of symbolizes how he’s freeing her from the 18 years she spent in the tower and have a new start once and for all.

Mother Gothel is one of the scariest villains for the same reasons as Frollo, She is manipulative, condencending, rude, only cares about herself and is also a big gaslighter who constantly lies and decieves her way through different situations, she pretends that she cares about Rapunzel but through out the interactions you realize just how much she puts down the poor girl

Gothel was only mean to Rapunzel & she still showed Rapunzel some affection, even if Gothel only took in Rapunzel because of her hair. In the end Rapunzel got reunited with her biological mother & father.
Frollo on the other hand was cruel to not only Quasimodo, but to Esmeralda, Pheobus, the Archdeacon, the gypsies & the citizens of Paris. Frollo didn't like one thing about Quasimodo in fact he was going to kill him as a baby by drowning him. The only reason he didn't was because the Archdeacon guilt tripped him into taking care of Quasimodo. Frollo groped & threatened to burn Esmeralda, backstabbed Pheobus, used and tried to kill Quasimodo.

I always wondered why Tangled seems so much more grounded than others Disney princess movies. It has the usual “something more” trope, but there was something else about it too. And then I realized, it’s because Gothel commits a real world crime of kidnapping a newborn baby and raising it as if it were hers. She exhibits all the characteristics of someone who is desperately clinging to a stolen prize that’s gradually outgrowing her hold.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they consulted with real life victims who found out in their adulthood that their overly protective and gaslighting parents were really their kidnappers.

"This is the story of how I died. Oh, don't worry, it's actually a fun and lively story; in fact, it isn't even mine." -Probably the best opening line in literature history.
"This is the story of how I died" -it is in fact the story of how he died, but "It isn't even mine" subverts that foreshadowing in a comical way, making us think he isn't actually going to die. But it is the story of how he died, but it's not his story. It's Repunzel's story in which Eugene died. This line is mellow-dramatic but comedic. It sets the serious yet playful tone of the entire movie, and as said, foreshadows the finale. It is also a line I regularly quote when I'm about ready to attempt a very difficult piece of music.

I can relate to that lol
I do jazz piano so when I’m asked to accompany people’s improvised solos it’s very nerve-racking since I’m not sure what they’re gonna do next. Of course, the actual music isn’t usually too difficult (as opposed to a lot of classical music, which I’m very familiar with since I was trained in classical music before making that switch for university) but what it lacks in difficulty in music, it has in difficulty of what that person is going to do next, and trying to match the tone somewhat in your playing.

And I love how the scenes with Rapunzel’s parents don’t have any sort of dialogue. How the animators and writers just let those moments be silent and let the moments speak for themselves. How the king and queen never stopped longing for their daughter after so many years and how they knew almost immediately that it was her when she stood before them, despite her having different hair than when she was a baby.
No dialogue. No words. Just characters sharing a powerful moment together, no words needed. I wish more stories remembered how powerful these moments can be.

Yeah I know a lot of people myself included loved Tangled back in 2010 but at the same time, it never felt as deep of a love as others. I've always prefered Tangled over Frozen since it really felt like Disney's last great fairytale film. The visuals, the story, the character designs are wonderful, while Frozen always felt off both visuals and story-wise. I always see people say Rapunzel has the same face as Elsa/Anna when she really doesn't-her face has more structure and her eyes are better proportioned, she feels more like say Ariel's proportions, while Anna and Elsa's faces have really off proportions with the eyes too big/low, and noses too small. Tangled has this magic of a storybook come to life Frozen never gave me, since its story was much more focused and tightly written. It's a shame it doesn't get as much love, especially since it was the studio's first 3D princess film. Always felt odd how they had such a wonderfully strong start only to double back and make Frozen.

Exactly, most years it’s 5 nominated films but for some reason for 2010, it was only 3 nominations with HYTTD, TS3 and The Illusionist (which I never heard of). Tangled should’ve been there as well even though it still would’ve lost to TS3. It’s weird because 2010 was one of most stacked years for animation ever and yet there were less films nominated than years that had less memorable films

One of the most brilliant things this movie does is provide a legitimate reason for why Rapunzel’s tears heals the prince at the end of the story. It’s something that comes completely out of left field in the original fairytale but this movie gave a perfection explanation for it.

Yeah, if you talk about the classic Disney fairy tale romantic love story, "Tangled" is hands down the best in the entire canon. Yes, even better tham Beauty and the Best, and that's not to put down B&B in the slightest.
As a matter of fact, I can't help but think if part of the reason why Disney hasn't really tried to make another fairy tale romantic love story since Tangled (focusing on other types of love instead, particularly family love) is because they got it so perfect there that they feel it would be impossible to top it.
Because if it was... I honestly wouldn't blame them!
Now, to give my two cents, I would like to give a special mention to the campfire scene, since I think it's one of the main reasons why the love story is so great. It's not only both characters telling their backstories. It's both characters letting themselves being vulnerable in fornt of each other. And both of them listen to the other and give each other support and kindness.
They say that in love stories the audience has to fall in love with the characters separately before the characters fall in love with each other. And that's true, but that doesn't mean yoi should overlook the way the characters fall in love with each other.
Fortunately, "Tangled" does both steps absolutely perfect.

I remember when the title Tangled was revealed and people asked, why it wasn't called Rapunzel, but when you watch the movie you realize why, becuase this time they really fleshed out the prince as well, it wasn't just a reinvention of a Disney fairy tale, but one being done without detracting of the source material or just being mean spirited about it, they really deconstructed their own genre and updated it with changes like a grounded villain, a fleshed out romantic interest, and animal companions that don't speak because the expressive animation carried their characters, but especially a princess with a really relatable conflict, trying to expand your world even though that goes against what your parents have taught you, and as a teenager that really speaks to you, and they did it in a very universal way so anyone can relate no matter what.
BTW, I really love how in Kingdom Hearts III the Kingdom of Corona is one of the most fleshed out worlds, with the different sets of the movie and the kingdom itself is so full of life and people doind their own things even the plaza dance scene is a welcomed change of pace, unlike the Frozen part, where is just a tundra and a maze like ice castle, sadly no Tangled songs were featured in the game because ofc they had to feature Let It Go, when bops like Mother Knows Best, I've Got a Dream, or I See The Light, despite the lamp scene was so beautifuly recreated in-game, heck not even the actual dance scene song was present just some new composition, because ofc we have to blow the licensing budget on Let It Go, screw Frozen that piece of media that is colder than the tundra itself!

Tangled is a very personal movie to me that I adore to bits. When I rewatched the movie after figuring out to have gone through gaslighting, guilt tripping and overall emotionally abusive behavior of my mother and past ex's.. the movie became a heavier yet pleasant watch. I cried more often than I could count, finally seeing the signals of emotional abuse.
Now since recent months it has lessened with my mother, but the mental aftereffects still linger where I fear of her disappointment or to have done something wrong despite trying my best. So Tangled holds a very special place in my heart because of that ♡

I'll never forget the first time I watched Tangled. I went to see it begrudgingly, believing it to be another soulless cash grab with over-the-top characters that would only appeal to little kids. The thought popped into my head multiple times for the first half, but I had to admit it got a few laughs out of me. Then I saw the Kingdom dance scene and realized I was having a great time -- not to mention the lanterns. But when Mother Gothel came back in with her childish "Mother knows best," I rolled my eyes. "Here we go again," I thought. Until the tune dropped.
I realized I had underestimated her as a villain. The last act is still one of the best in any fairy tale film. They embraced the dark roots of most fairy tales and showcased a coming of age story that many young people can relate to. It restored my faith in Disney.

  • @fortcastellan1730
    @fortcastellan1730 Před 10 měsíci +21

My favorite part of Tangles is the fact that Flynn's dying act was to spite Mother Gothel! He cut Rapunzel's hair so that Gotherl would loose her immortality. And maybe it would free Rapunzel, if the chips landed right (and Gothel didn't kill Rapunzel in a maddened rage). But, in any case, he committed to his course with the only certainties being that he was condemning himself to bleed out, and that it would spite Gothel. Plus, he committed this act with the same energy and conviction as if he were cutting someone's throat! That was surprisingly hardcore for an animated Disney movie.
In all seriousness, I liked Flynn from the start, as he was giving off real "Tellos" vibes. (Tellos is an obscure comic book, look it up.) Rapunzel also felt real and likable, and, well, it was just fun to watch the two bounce off each other. Much like Emperor's New Groove, the comedy just hit right...

I don't know if it was intentional or not but the pixie cut Rapunzel gets after Flynn cuts off her hair, is the same as Mandy Moore's pixie cut she had in 2002.
Mother Gothel has got to be one of the greatest villains. Her quote "Now look what you've done Rapunzel" after she stabs Flynn, sends a chill down my spine! I do think when compared to other horrible "Mother" characters like the Evil Queen and Lady Tremaine, Gothel is tame as I think she uses the hair to stay alive as she's cheated death for centuries and only planned on snipping a piece of Rapuznel's hair before kidnapping when she saw the hair lose power once cut.

Also Rapunzel having a chamaleon as her personal pet is somewhat unusual for former Disney princess before her, it isn´t as he couldn´t be cute on his own but overall it´s somewhat unusual for princesses before as he is a reptile, a smaller and cute one but still a reptile which is somewhat hard to have a connection so easily than other friends which former princesses got on mammals and birds - even Rajah, Jasmine´s tiger is a blend of both very mighty impressive but cute and handsome at the same as being a mammal - and when it had been some variations as Ariel´s friends - which aren´t her pets actually - it´s because of the environment where she comes from, so Rapunzel is a more classical type in appeareance but ends being quite more MODERN than they, as overall reptiles weren´t considered something which might be likeable as a usual pet - which exception of turtles perhaps - so she was already unusual and modern on it. It´s of course a stereotype but reptiles aren´t usually thought as something fancy and cute oftenly as female companions or interests, and though as Pascal proves it could be still, he still somewhat a unique switch on the theme as cuteness could be quirky and odd at the same time.

  • @lasercraft32

I want them to make a darker spin-off movie where Repunzel never leaves the tower to see the lights, inherits Gothel's manipulative and selfish personality, and kills Gothel when she realizes she was being manipulated all her life... And then Flynn sneaks into the tower, only to realize that there's a terrifying murderer woman living there who takes him captive.
The plot of the film would involve Flynn trying to find a way to escape the tower to warn the kingdom about Repunzel, and he teams up with Pascal to do it (because Pascal doesn't like what Repunzel has become). XD
And when I say dark, I don't mean like those cheap live action horror movies of Winnie the Pooh or Steamboat Willie, I mean the same animation style as the actual movie, with just as good of writing, and just a slightly darker tone than your average Disney movie (I wouldn't want it to be like a slasher film or anything, gore really isn't impressive or interesting to me).

Yeap. Tangle is so good that even it's freaking Disney Channel animated show is good.
I mean, it's not perfect, the episodes not related to the lore of the story tend to be on the weaker side, and Cassandra's rushed development in the final season put a bit of a stain on it, but it's still easily the best tie-in TV show for a Disney movie ever.

If you love tangled, and havnt seen the animated series that takes place between the movie and the wedding short then you totally need to see that, it built upon everything the movie established, keeping that realism going. You get to see rapunzel cope with the trauma she went through while also struggleing to be a princess. The songs may only happen is the "important" episodes but they are just as good or even better than the movies songs. The series ran for 3 seasons and had an additional movie to pilot the series. Its very underrqted and not a lot of people know about it because disney didnt really promote it very well.... or much at all really. They basically sent it out to die, which is a shame because the series is sooo good. The series and pilot movie are both on disney plus

Tangled tells the story of a young princess, Rapunzel, who was kidnapped shortly after birth by a greedy, old woman named Mother Gothel. Mother Gothel takes Rapunzel because she desires the magical healing powers of her long blonde hair that keeps Mother Gothel from aging and hides Rapunzel away in an isolated tower in the forest outside the kingdom of Corona. Mother Gothel knew that if Rapunzel was in her care, then she would never grow old and die. So, Mother Gothel kept Rapunzel locked away in a tower for eighteen years of her life and always told her to never leave the tower because the world is unsafe and full of cruel people. As she was growing up in her tower, Rapunzel never realized that Mother Gothel was not actually her real mother. So, she was unknowingly a prisoner for her entire life.
Her opportunity to escape her tower didn't come until a notorious thief, Eugene Fitzherbert known by his alias Flynn Rider, finds her tower as he's running away from the castle guards after stealing the princess's crown. Rapunzel then convinces Flynn Rider to be her guide to the kingdom and take her to see the floating lights (lanterns) that she sees every year on the night of her birthday. And while Tangled is praised for its animation, writing, characters, and musicality, it also illustrates the seven media keys mentioned in Dr. Eugene Gan's book Infinite Bandwidth: Encountering Christ in the Media.
    The First Media Key: Balance
With all things, we need a "healthy diet" (Gan, pg. 27) or, in other words, a good balance with everything in our lives. This means that one of the things we should have a good balance with is between work and play. We can see this in the film as Rapunzel goes back and forth between cooking and cleaning and then taking a break to either read, paint, or play with her pet friend chameleon, Pascal. Rapunzel shows us that we do not always have to focus on one thing and should do various things during our day both work and play.
    The Second Media Key: Attitude-Awareness
We need to be aware of the content creator's message that is being sent. "We're susceptible to the media's messages because we're sensory creatures...And virtually everything we will ever experience comes to us through the flesh" (Gan, pg. 38).
There are many messages that the filmmakers of Tangled are trying to get across to their audience. From the nature of both selflessness and self-sacrifice to finding the courage within oneself, and to start believing in yourself and be the best version of yourself that you can be. I believe that the overall message is that there is always more in us, even when we don't think we can keep going. This is shown in one of the scenes at the end of the movie when Rapunzel eventually figured out that she was the lost princess, and after confronting Mother Gothel about it said she was going to leave. Obviously, that didn't bode well with her, so when Flynn Rider goes back to the tower to see Rapunzel, he finds her all tied up and gagged. But before he can even help save her, Mother Gothel comes up from behind him and stabs him in his side. Then Mother Gothel goes to lock Rapunzel up, but she will not stop fighting her and though it must be so tiring to keep trying to fight back she never stops. Rapunzel was told all her life that it was her 70 feet of long magical hair that ultimately made her special, when really there was a strength inside of her the whole time.
There's also another part to that scene that shows how selfless Rapunzel is and the self-sacrifice that Flynn Rider made for her. Right before Mother Gothel locks Rapunzel away, Rapunzel shouts, "No! I won't stop for every minute of the rest of my life. I will fight. I will never stop trying to get away from you, but if you let me save him, I will go with you. I'll never run, I'll never try to escape, just let me heal him and you and I will be together, forever, just like you want, everything will be the way it was. I promise, just like you want. Just let me heal him." This shows just how selfless Rapunzel is. That she's willing to be locked away in a tower for the rest of her life, so long as Mother Gothel allows her to save Flynn Rider from dying. However, Flynn starts protesting saying, "No! No, Rapunzel!" And even though Mother Gothel released Rapunzel to let her save him, right before Rapunzel could use the magical healing powers of her hair, Flynn grabs a sharp piece of broken glass and cuts off all her beautiful hair, which then starts aging Mother Gothel very quickly, and soon she is nothing but some bits of ashes on the ground. Thus, saving Rapunzel instead of allowing her to save him. This shows us that he loved her so much that he was willing to sacrifice himself to save her.
I really think that this scene can help any viewer to realize how much strength they have inside of them. That they can do anything so long as they put their mind to it. And in the second part of the scene, it truly shows how powerful being selfless is and that we should always be uplifting to others and put others before ourselves. The underlying messages in films is what really makes a wonderful and such an inspiring movie. In this movie, Tangled, it teaches the viewers to be brave, daring, and to have big dreams in life.
The Third Media Key: The Dignity of the Human Person
"All media should reflect, uphold, and enhance human dignity" (Gan, pg. 52). Every single person should be treated with the dignity and respect that they deserve. "It should bring people together. It should promote understanding of the human person and human communities" (Gan, pg. 52). We should be able to show charity to those around us. We can see that in the movie, Mother Gothel keeps Rapunzel locked away in an isolated tower her entire life and gave her absolutely no freedom whatsoever. She treated her as more of a prized possession and object than an actual human being. The only reason she actually cared for Rapunzel was because of her magical hair that kept her from growing old and dying. Through this scene we see that the way Mother Gothel treats Rapunzel is wrong and that we should respect the dignity of everyone and value all life. One way in which the movie Tangled shows the dignity of the human person was how every year for 18 years, the King and Queen would light lanterns for their lost daughter hoping that one day they would be blessed to find her and have her in their lives once more. They only knew their daughter for a few days, but this shows just how much they loved her and cared for her still, even though they never knew whether or not they would see her again.
    The Fourth Media Key: Truth-filled
The fourth media is truth-filled. This media key "tells us that we should not tell lies..." (Gan, pg. 68). This means that everything we do in both word and action should be truthful. "...we mustn't leave the truth behind" (Gan, pg. 68). Rapunzel believed everything Mother Gothel told her, except everything she told her was a lie. Mother Gothel lied to Rapunzel about why she should be locked away in the tower and what the world is truly filled with because there are cruel people in the world. But the biggest lie she told her was that she was her mother and kept it a secret that she was the lost princess of the kingdom Corona. This is why you shouldn't believe everything that you see and hear and should take everything with a grain of salt. Most of the plot is based on a lie. And yes, Mother Gothel only loved Rapunzel for her magical hair and lied to her her entire life saying that the "outside world was a dangerous place," when really Mother Gothel was the real danger the whole time.

Love that the movie never hides who’s the villain and who’s the “lost princess”, we know that the whole movie, but they don’t
Also, of course I knew that Mother Gothel was horrible, cruel and evil, but I never got to know at what point until the end, she kept growing those villain acts, more insane and inhuman each time; but when she sings to Rapunzel the second time, trying to convince her and receives a “no” for answer… there I knew she maybe has no limits, it was such a terrifying song and I loved it so much (just like Helfire when I hear it I guess xD), but that song really gave me chills and I was scared
    What a great villain!

i have to write this somewhere; Mother Gothel used the flower to keep her age. when the flower was discovered by the soldier for the king to heal Rapunzel at which point after receiving the healing potion made from the flower her hair turned blonde, we learn that she has the ability to make one younger again by brushing her hair and reciting a spell/song. The spell/song that as long as said/sung by an individual that is within the vicinity of and stroking Rapunzel's hair. while she herself, Rapunzel, ages. Does the magic not work on herself? Is there evidence that she's tried to make it happen? is she capable of making herself younger? effectively making herself immortal?
