      I feel like Disney still has the *potential* to reach its renaissance highs. I think the main problem is that the executives are pushing all of its products into safe mediocrity. Honestly, Frozen would've worked better if Anna fell out in love with Hans, the kiss fails, and Hans, desperate to save Arrendale as people are on the verge of death, decides that killing Elsa is his only option left. He apologetically tells Anna this and tries to keep her warm in her last moments before he goes to kill her sister. Have the circumstances make him an antagonist rather than have that stupid twist.

    Typically in a Disney movie, the main hero has an “I want” song while the villain has an “I am” song. An example of an “I want” song is “When will my reflection show” from Mulan. An example of an “I am” song is “Gaston” from beauty and the beast. The thing that makes Judge Claude Frollo unique is that he’s one of the only Disney villains to have an “I want” song rather than a “I am” song. This sets him apart from other Disney villains. He is arguably the darkest Disney villain in one of the darkest Disney stories. On top of that, Hellfire is a well composed song in general.

    Aside from Hellfire, which I agree deserves the top spot, Friends on the Other Side is my favorite Disney villian song. It's soo catchy yet dark at the same time. The song is about giving into your wants. Dr. Facilier is established to be someone who gave into his want for power by becoming a voodoo bokor. He is convincing Navine and Lawrence to do the same, but of course tricking them for his own gain. It was a great way to get the audience to both hate and love his character as a villian, which is exactly how it should be.

    I gotta hand it to beauty and the beast. Its held up even after decades. But I never viewed Gaston as his main song, as it was mostly a praise by his fellow hunters.
    For me his villain song was always Kill The Beast and that song rocked hard as one of the great villain songs. He uses fear to confuse and anger the town into bloodthirsty action.

They just gave nomination for the best music and that's all! Such gorgeous soundtrack didn't even win! 🤯 Yes, soundtrack for Emma is good, but it's no way near the greatness of Hunchback and Alan Menken 🧐 "Personal pain of Alan Menken's big fan"

    Personally, I’d switch Be Prepared and HeIIfire. I think HF is a better song. But BP is a better *villain* song. Where HF showed us who Frolo was as a person and what kind of villain he was, BP represented both what kind of villain Scar is AND it shows what kind of stakes the protagonists are up against.
    So yeah, I’d rank HeIIfire above Be Prepared on any list that’s just ranking Disney songs in general. But when it comes to the added layer of villain songs, I think Be Prepared does a slightly better job for what it was made for. Either way, they both deserve to be in the top 2 🙌

    • @evenmoor
      @evenmoor Před 4 měsíci +11

      With respect, "Hellfire" does a _fantastic_ job at both showing what kind of person Frollo is and the stakes for the protagonists. Plus it has some fantastic bonuses for those who have an understanding of either Latin or Catholic theology: Frollo sings _It's not my fault / I'm not to blame / It is the gypsy girl, the witch, who set this flame!_ and the chorus answers back _Mea culpa / Mea Culpa / Mea maxima culpa!_ which translates to "through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault." In fact, the chorus is singing a prayer from the Mass called the Confiteor, which is a _confession of guilt._ The chorus is Frollo's conscience, and it speaks the truth he doesn't want to hear. "Hellfire" is an amazing demonstration of the nature of sin itself: knowing what you're doing is wrong and choosing to do it anyway. Frollo has one last chance to turn away from his evil path in the moment that he's interrupted by the guard, who informs him that Esmeralda has escaped the cathedral. But Frollo chooses to pursue Esmeralda anyway at the expense of the entire city. The last lines are "God have mercy on her / God have mercy on me / But she will be mine or / She will burn!" and the chorus counterpoint is "Kyrie eleison" ("Lord have mercy").
      "Be Prepared" is a fantastic and memorable villain song, but "Hellfire" is on a level all its own.

    • @vetarlittorf1807
      @vetarlittorf1807 Před 4 měsíci

      @@Capydapy Actually, it is deeper than that. Humans are feared because of their mastery over fire. This gives humans a power over the jungle that animals don't have. King Louie doesn't think he will literally turn human by possessing fire, but he knows that humans are primates like him and thus he believes he has the potential to create fire, therefore gaining the same power humans have over the wild. Louie is completely obsessed with humans to the point where he establishes his kingdom in the remains of an ancient city, but it's not enough for him. He and his monkeys are still shunned by the jungle and so he thinks the knowledge of fire-making will fix that.
      He is obviously a villain since he was clearly planning to kidnap Mowgli for a long time, sending scouts to observe him and waiting for an opportunity, which came the moment he learned that Mowgli was no longer under the protection of the wolves.

    To me, Poor Unfortunate Souls is number 2, because the music and lyrics are superior to Be Prepared imo, but mostly because of its immediate effect on the protagonist. Ariel's major choice and transformation during it are just too important to the plot and many characters' motivations to be lower on the list.
    And Hellfire is incredible because it's an I Want song for a villain, when in general a lot of villain songs are I Am songs.

    Love is an open Door works, but it's more of the innocently subtle kind of insidious. Tho it does rely a lot on the visual cues as well. But the Love being an open door is that it's an opportunity. For Anna it's escape, for Olaf/Kristoff/Sven it's companionship, for later (Anna/Elsa) it's healing, but for Hans it's to exploit. He's there to exploit his opportunity.
    Is it the best? Nah. Is it bad? I don't think so. It's just different. It's not in your face evil. It's there to trick you. And it feels purposeful, unlike At All Costs (which feels like it could've been Asha/Star love song, but then had to rework it later for how Asha/King felt about wishes). You can tell it's purposeful by the lyrics, the timing, and the animation to back it up (how he follows her lead, how he's just out of synch, something is OFF).
