But when you push the tip against a wall, the tip sits between the wall and the tape, so adds to the length the ruler is measuring. To compensate for this, manufacturers design the tip so it can slide back and forth by its thickness so you get the correct measurement either way. The pic looks like they "repaired" one of the tape measures with the wrong tip (mounting holes in the wrong location).

I do the thing where I say "huh?" immediately after being asked a question or told something all the time.
The problem for me is that I often have this compulsion to say something when prompted to, but sometimes it takes me a second to playback what was said to me in my head to fully understand it so I don't actually know what was being asked or said yet, so it always just comes out as a "Huh? Oh." then the proper response.

If my husband is not addressed when spoken to, he will miss half the message…. And with how effective communication is taught, it is my fault 😂. One little change… I wait one damn second after I say his name and he recognizes that he is being spoken to, he looks at me.. then I say the words.

Good “Babe?” (Address the person being spoken to)
“Yeah?” (Acknowledge being addressed)
“Can you x, y and z?” (Communication)

As far as the tape measures being different, the important thing to remember is to use the same one throughout your woodworking or other task it is used on. So many novices switch around tape measures as they work a job, leaving one at the table saw and another at the project site, say putting in cabinets and get frustrated at how things don't fit or align properly. Or if a helper reads a tape measure different than you do (interrater relationship). Get together and agree what is 3 - 5/16th to you and them on some test pieces for instance, before you cut expensive pieces that will have to be replaced if mistakes are made.

However by then the question is already mid repetition. 9/10 times If you just wait a second longer after hearing “huh” you will get an answer to your question without having to repeat it.

Ok so at 4:49 I may be mistaken but the reason the tape measures seem off is because the top one is a “fixed” one where the clip at the end cannot move at all, whilst the second is one that the metal bit can move slightly in and slightly out depending on what you are measuring. If I am not mistaken, the point of that is so that you can measure something by pushing the metal bit against it or by pulling on the outer edge. That is at least how much tape measures work and they are a godsend. There is still the possibility that those two tape measures were just poorly made though. Cheers!

both tape measures are accurate. the reason the end thing slides is to account for the thickness of the end peice weather you pull it or push it against something. one is pulled and the other is not. also if you must get something accurate get use the 1 foot mark as your starting point.

4:45. Retractable Tape Measures, are not broken or reading incorrectly, the discrepancy occurs as they are positioned slightly differently. A design feature of the tape is that the tab at the end, is not directly attached to the tape, there is a 16th of an inch *play, (the thickness of the tab), in the tapes relationship to the end tab. This is so the tape can be used with the tab butted up against something or hanging over the edge of of whatever is being measured, the tape will read true either way, without having to calculate for the tab thickness.
*play - free or unimpeded motion (as of a part of a mechanism) also : the length or measure of such motion. KNOW YOUR TOOLS!
The measuring tape makes it more accurate. It takes into account the with of the lip when your pushing the inside or outside of it.

Seriously though. 1/4" is actually a very significant difference statistically. Being 1/4" longer than average takes you from the 50th percentile, up to the 64th percentile. Up almost 15 percentiles.
The tape measures are "inaccurate" to the thickness of the tab hook. So, if you hook onto a ledge, it allows a small (1-2mm) pull and if you butt it against a wall/upright it allows the same 1-2mm compression. That way, coming or going, it's always accurate.

The thing about that measuring tape is that it's all about ratio. If 1 inch has the different of 1/4 inch, that's mean for every 4 inch there's 1 inch measurement difference.
Those tape measures are of different length. Also the bottom tape is a bit off from the top tape. They may not be pulled taught because they have wiggle room so when you pull you get the right measurement.

Pro tip with the tape measure if you are not cutting with the same tape you measured with burn an inch, as in measure starting from the 1 and subtract an inch pretty common construction practice when a cut needs to be exact tapes are not a 1/4" off like that but a 1/16" to 1/8" is not uncommon.

Hey... so tape measures are designed to account for the thickness of the metal tabe at the end. If you hook the tab on something it is designed to slide out so you have a base measurement of zero. Then when you measure to the outside of the tab it will slide in... the tape measure isnt lying ... its just accounting for you using it differently...
