I love how many mmo stories eventually turn into large scale social experiments the likes of which will inevitably be cited by academics.
Hope you survived the snake venom, Frost. There's something hilarious about the author of the novels based of the game, who played a character described as "Princess Leia on steroids", being defeated by Harry Potter.
Sure seems like it belongs on some fan fiction site. If only the Smiling Dog Crew had been the Smiling Pony Crew or something, it would be perfect.
Based on the recent Gamurs/Escapist/Second Wind news, I guess he didn't survive the venom after all.
what happened?
@@Riboshom
This really highlights the importance of limbs for effective Ginyu posing
Great Dragon Ball Z reference XD
To this day, this is still the greatest gank in the history of Elite Dangerous. Rest in pepperoni, Salami.
All of these stories seem to have a common theme.
1st: Publicly announce a live event where every griefer, troll, and internet sociopath can see it.
2nd: Create a parasocial experiment predicated on humanity's worst instincts.
3rd: Watch your entire life's work be trolled to death for other people's amusement.
There are 3 crucial things missing from this narrative. 1.. Harry Potter used exploits to engineer his ship (something he was banned for later), thus Drew was in his rights to nullify the event outcome when he found out, but he chose not to say anything about it when the truth came out post-event.
2.. The reason Drew chose to say nothing was because he got the best possible outcome for the event - something that generated the most controversy and headlines and was perfect for the ending of the book he was writing and promoting at the time. The odds were deliberately stacked against Salome for this reason.
3. The defenders actually won this event despite Salome dying since there were 4 protagonists making that run (not just Salome), and the other 3 made it to safety. Salome was always meant to be the decoy and lure people away from the other 3 characters, so in effect, Drew and CoR's plan worked perfectly as everyone fell for it and went after Salome, leaving the other 3 characters to win the event for her 'cause'.
In the end it was a cool event, and one very hard to pull off considering Elite doesn't really have the tools or gameplay to make this work fairly for everyone. But Kudos to Drew and his team for pulling it off and for getting the ending they (secretly) wished for (imo).
I knew a couple of people who worked on this event and were close to Drew at the time, and this is pretty much 100% accurate from what I was told.
Yeah, after some some elitist crew unilaterally banned all other players from a public event I can absolutely understand why everyone went after the bounty.
It's kind of odd that Drew (the author,) was just kind of dropped by Elite Dangerous afterwards; it makes me wonder if the devs felt like this kind of event was too much trouble to bother with.
The development leaders at Fdev find most things to be too much trouble to bother with these days.
@@OrilliousTyrZing!
RIP Frost. If only cobra anti-venom was something everyone kept on hand for such emergencies.
What was not mentioned in the video is that the defenders actually won the event. The conditions were at least one of 4 people from Salome's wing must survive and reach the destination.
Salome was killed but the 3 other ships actually survived.
But I don't think there was any grand reveal at the end of the event anyway. And that would be kind of a Elite:Dangeous standard.
BTW if you want more interesting stories like this from E:D player events, just search for The Gnosis :]
Or, as somebody already mentioned in the comments, the Thargoid artefacts stations bombing by players.
Yeah this followed the path of all things 'lore' and 'community' in ED and fell kinda flat, but it was by far the highlight of the games lifecycle so far for me, as something was actually changed by it! Even though I didn't actually participate or care enough to want to at the time it was nice for a rather more meaningful event to happen in a way the wider playerbase is actually aware of it at all...
In my experience, ED usually falls flat anyway
Yea, I think words like "epic" and "immersive" are not really in their vocabulary 🙂
A story so captivating even the snake who bit sat and listened. This was great one both in visual and in story.
Can't imagine this event going any other way lol. I love that they put it on
I dunno if intentional or not, but I love that in a story about Elite, Frost was bitten by a Cobra. Well played!
This and ZP have become my two favorite series to see posted. Talking about all my favorite space games too. Wish he’d do the birth of Steve in Eve. First titan ever built. One hell of a story. Or the Battle of B-R5RB which was HUGE. They kept the wreckage of the titans lost in that battle floating in space as a monument.
I see Stuff of Legends (or Cold Take), I click
Honestly, it's always worrisome when a new voice joins the group, but goddamn, Frost has been the best addition to Escapist ever.
"Armed Fighters..." Yay, visual puns!
I was part of the defenders (PAC). I would agree that their communication of the tar pit policy left much to be desired, most notably that armed ships standing off to a safe distance would be left alone.
Let's put it this way: I could post a "try to kill me in open" for this exact run from T Tauri to Tionisla and still survive, then and now. Because it's a cake walk for any competent player.
1. Salomé (in effect Drew) did not prune that account's friends list despite being begged to. And on the day flew like a muppet, frequently overheating systems while fuel-scooping in a way that no competent pilot would, and doing high-speed emergency drops from supercruise for no good reason (the game assigns random damage to all ship modules when you do this, so it is only a good strategy when near to a port, and is suicidal on an endurance run such as this). This has led many, myself included, to suspect some stacking of the deck by Drew against Salomé's survival.
2. In Elite Dangerous you can pull someone over using something called an interdictor, which is not a weapon. So the protectors (of which I was one) were assigned to tar-pit all expected routes and equip an interdictor but no weapons. The plan was to scan all ships at every arrival point and challenge any ship with weapons to move well away or be interdicted, thus keeping the route clear of hostiles. We had more than enough ships to cover this and I still reckon that this was the best plan available within the game's constraints.
It was entirely expected that Smiling Dog Crew in general and Harry Potter in particular would betray us, so Salomé was assigned a close escort. However the game's flaky instancing was the ultimate reason for her demise. Particularly when the servers are under heavy load, the game can struggle to instance players together, and, as ill luck would have it, Potter managed to achieve an instance with Salomé while her close escort were still stuck in the loading screen into realspace (the 'blue tunnel' screen).
> overheating systems while fuel-scooping in a way that no competent pilot would
that not even average pilot would
"The best elite dangerous novel" is a backhanded compliment if I've ever heard one.
I hope this guy is going to make content elsewhere since this channel died today. I loved his videos.
He went over to start a new channel with all his escapist buddy's. It's called Second wind, you will not be disappointed
The next story you guys should do is about how a new media games journalism outlet killed their brand when they pissed off their talent and they resigned.
THAT is the stuff of legends.
Just heard about the mass resignations at the Escapist. Don't know if you were one of those people or not. But I did want to say that I love your stuff, and I hope you keep making videos -wherever that might be.
So wait, Salome didn't vet her friends list for members of the guild trying to kill her? And didn't allow most of her protectors to have weapons? How else were they supposed to intercept enemies?
Both good questions.

Killing interdictors was fun in the FDL, but T10 with the spoiler a close second.
@@wobblysauce T10 with a spoiler ?
@@Riva1000 as aposed to T7/T9
@@wobblysauce Yea, I guessed the Type-10 Defender. But what spoiler ? 🙂
I remember this event well. Another interesting event to come out of ED was the terrorist bombings using those weird alien devices. I believe they disrupted station functionality, and one player in particular was committed to doing this to as many stations as possible. I remember his justification being "if I CAN do it, the I WILL do it". The real low-point was the bombing of a player-created memorial event held for a player that had died of cancer, if memory serves.
Oh the Thargoid artefacts bombing. Good times :)
@@Riva1000 Yes, that was it. I completely agreed with the guy up until it started getting personal. I remember him becoming persona-non-grata instantly after the memorial attack.
@OllyDee123 This player was called Cmdr Ollobrains...whose name looks suspiciously much like yours.
Aren't you self-promoting here? 😆
@@OllyDee123 He messed up Jameson Memorial ?
@@Riva1000 That’s not the place I’m referring too but he most certainly did bomb Jameson Memorial at some point. He bombed every major station he could.
Frost your delivery and voice is appreciated as always. Thanks for the ASMR 🎉
I missed out on this event but any time I come across a video talking about it, I have to watch it. I live vicariously like that. My time in the black is spent sporadically, after all.
I find it incredibly disappointing the pursuit didn't end with a desperate last stand, an ingenious maneuver, or the like - but instead ended due to insiders "griefing" the event; I feels it undercuts the "role-play fantasy" of the event.
You would fit right in with Elite's community, my guy.
Yea sadly the ED Community Is incapable to really Stand up to the griefers And kick them out of any And all meaningful communities. Instead they actually managed to infiltrate almost all of them - even sth like NEWP that's supposed to be a protection for new players, or AXI that's supposed to fight off aliens lol
@@CrimsonGamer99 Well, in the half that is not the griefers at least :)
I suppose you could consider the griefer's character to have a more reasonable in universe motivation. Perhaps they're a serial killer looking for fame and figured that Salome was too good an opportunity to pass up. Or a hitman who infiltrated the ranks of her bodyguards to pull of the perfect assassination, or a disgruntled guard who had been paid off by the other side to defect.
The fatal flaw in the plan was that any player generated stories in an MMO are essentially the same thing as a thousand monkeys banging randomly on keyboards. You get a lot more shit than Shakespeare.
I flew in Salome's wing during the event and it's kinda awesome seeing this getting a short documentary. Also pretty cool seeing my footage from the event in the video too. I really enjoyed this, and I'm glad to see it summarized so well.
What's your CMDR name? Guessing you would be Isaiah? ;)
@@Bad-Seed That's correct!

@Isoquant Sadly I don't play Elite anymore, grind being the biggest reason. But you're welcome to come find me in DCS. :)
I really love this series. Almost every episode has a banger of a story
I really love this series. These stories are so much fun to hear about.
Love the series. And I love the little background animations.
Honestly, this just sounds like a massive Charlie Foxtrot to begin with.
I feel like there's a very real world where half of this series because the bullshit people pull in Elite: Dangerous and Eve: Online, and honestly, I'd be here for it. The MMO stories are where the good stuff is for this series.
This is probably the most interesting one, and most of the other impressive stories either have the name Cillit Bang or SDC themselves as the interesting parts.
Elite: Dangerous is very sterile when it comes to allowing users generate game content. FDev tries really hard to give everyone their safe space and astronomical sense of distance as far as interactions between players go, and so in those very few situations when they wanted to let users decide the outcome of things, it would be either some boring BGS speculations, or griefer fest
Before I even clicked the thumbnail, I knew this is gonna be the Salome thing because that's pretty much the only interesting thing that happened
Hoping for Steve the Titan’s story from EVE or the Battle of B-R5RB.
Yea. Sad thing is most of those stories end up with either griefers or cheaters win or devs themselves ruining the event.
Remember The GNOSIS.
As a very single player type of gamer, I love how Frost can turn these chaotic stories from the online gaming world into digestible yet detailed accounts. Watch out Yahtz!
Legends of stuff is back
This was amazing. Please never stop.
dude the storys that you tell are awesome and i love your voice!
Im really enjoying this new series/concept!
Watching again for the algo, love this series so much!!!! Thank you to whoever gifted me a membership to see this a week early!!!!
love this content!
thank you !
I wish The Escapist would continue this series. Very entertaining. And there's so many subjects they can still cover. For example how World of WarCraft perfectly predicted how people would act in the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic all the way back in 2005/6, so much so that the C.D.C.(Center for Disease Control) still uses the Blood Plague event as a textbook example of how disease vectors spread and shit like that and how people act during global catastrophes.
Nice Yu-Gi-Oh reference. I love spaceships it's such a fun deck
You're a Space Ace, Harry!
I'm a wot?
I was there for that with Hutton truckers. A wierd time but at least ED was trying something interesting.
I do love hearing video game stories from legend.
Haha, a crash and network problems - how true to form.
Remember this 'incident' well. Very nice summary.
Love the Ginyu Force reference. :)
5:22 actual snake charmer
1:41 Frikken Ginyu Force. XD
1:42 is... Is that a reference to the ginyu force?
Same color hair!
Ah, dang, I was hoping for the snake to stick around and become a mainstay.
Well, and I hope Nick's ok, too.
Oh hey I suggested this on the WoW funeral episode! No idea if my recommendation actually had any influence on if it got done but it's cool to see the story relayed through Frost's style regardless.
Hope Drew sees this, he's pretty active on YT. Great video!
You could say the guys got a Second Wind elsewhere ...
Those stories are really entertaining!
Thanks again
Gosh I love this series.. and to think it's over so soon...
Frost continues to deliver a great, interesting ABC entertaining experience
By the end of the story I had completely forgotten that this wasn't about Eve Online.
God I love this series!
I hear there is antivenon in a mug at Hutton Orbital
😂 👌
Got it, so the Smiling Dog Crew was intended to be the video game equivalent of Red Cell.
Reclamation’s the far better book IMO, but this was a ton of fun.
oh i misread the title as "the author hunted his own fans" and was anxiously waiting for the plot twist
No! No! No! "ARMED" FIGHTERS? Get OUT! lmao
Frost and Yahtzee should play Elite Dangerous on a more regular basis; they could be involved in their own stories just like this.
You just have to love how non-creative gamers are. The player that won could have his name live out forever in gaming legends like Leeroy Jenkins for example. Instead, he lived out his fantasies as a Harry Potter wanna-be, then had his name changed for copyright reasons! 😂
Well, he probably got to pick a name out for himself for the book, even if in the end its not as interesting.
The Boy Formerly Known As The Boy Who Could(n't For Legal Reasons)
His fantasy-to-live-out was to inconvenience as many people as he could, not something as vain as to have his name remembererd from a niche MMO. Him having the name changed is just another step, even if not intentional, to inconvenience the author by forcing him to back down on the promise made before the event
I bet Starbreeze are glad they released that demo for The Darkness, back in 2007. Thanks to Yahtzee's imp graphic, that game has lived on long after it might have otherwise!
6 years later and its still in the news lmfao
This is my favorite new series. Sad we lost Frost to a snake bite though.
I was wondering if they’d talk about this Drew is a real class act.
Wait: the Salome incident was a book tie-in? (I joined Elite not too many years before the pandemic, so I wasn’t there)
Book or the event was reflected in the official game lore.
I almost love this series more than Zero Punctuation.
Ahh, for once a piece of gaming news I feel invested in. I remember this quite vividly, a well thought out story, a game with promise and the absolute clusterfuck that was the failure of both. The story, run off its moors by griefers and the game by its own devs. I'm still skipping watching this so I don't have to relive my disappointment.
How did no one else mention this? An author being hunted in space... Hmm seems like a book i read one time... From.... Weird name what was it... Yazee... Yankee... Something like that lol.
RIP Salomé
1:42 😳Ummm….. Are those 3rd legs?
Was this the inspiration for the Jacques McKeown saga?
I'm still angry about the stupid naivité of Drew having the most notorious troll in E:D on his friends list (despite being warned by many people beforehand) and thus relaying his position to the enemy the whole time.
Maybe it was actually Drew's plan. To make the event more action packed. Or not :)
I wasn't there when that thing happened. But did hear about it and didn't like how it ended.
It feels like in E:D the crappy people always win and ruin the little fun there is for everybody. Including the many times when the crappy people are the devs themselves.
@@Riva1000that was the plan. Drew reached out to us in February of that year and asked if we wanted to be villains. We originally wanted to betray him and help her survive.
@@Ryanm17 A double betrayal. Now that was a great idea. That would actually be super epic story. The good guys kind of turning asshats in their desperation, and the bad guys saving the day ! :D And all played out by regular players.
Would have messed with Drew real bad too I imagine :)
Neat
GG Fellow Commanders💯............
great series, don't cancel this pls
Are the Children of Raxxla doing a Ginyu Force pose in Zero Punctuation format??
No
Hahahahahaha, that was epic.
I was there throughout this event and basically watched to see how inaccurate this video would be, as it goes, this is 100% accurate.
After bringing in SDC and ordering everyone to disarm (both utterly moronic decisions by PAC), I left the group and flew on my own. I did briefly instance with Harry Potter but wasn't able to get an interdiction lock to slow him down.
it sounds like Smiling Dog Crew is basically just Pinkertons (professional train robbers hired by elites as personal guards to hunt down escaped slaves) and its most well known spinoff, the police...
Is this show and the dnd moving over to the new channel? i just found out about this whole debacle
Yep I remember this event as soon as other players stated having holier than you attitude about who could participate I lost interest.
They needed game admins managing the event.
As fun as a fully player run event sounds on paper ... Getting everyone to cooperate is another story.
They needed someone above the players to ensure no one trolled the event into oblivion and stayed within the parameters of their roll.
Is Frost “dead” because this series has died and Frost moved to Second Wind with everyone? That’s meta AF.
I remember this incident clearly, CMDR Harry Potter you bastard
Ah, the SDC - the griefiest griefers I've ever been griefed by.
Did you grief back ?
The gank that keeps on giving. Gotta love seeing the old salt mine opened up every few years

Shouldn't have made it into MMO in the first place
@@trainee5471 As a player who almost exclusively has played in solo or group play only, I have to concur.
I want Elite, but smaller in scale (so that it actually MATTERS where you trade and fight. Everywhere is exactly the same in this game), and where it's not an ungodly painful grind to get a ship that can actually do combat outside of stealing the kills of space cops. :(
THE most fun I've ever had with the game was the Laave Rare Goods Trade Loop with the first ship that lets you slap a Fighter Bay on it... And after about 2 dozen loops, making only incremental progress towards your next goal... Well, it gets boring. :(
