As someone who played the day this bug was discovered, I remember the description being pretty straightforward:
At a certain level you could build a boxing ring within your house
Entering the boxing ring enabled an "attack" option on other players. This was OK because death inside a players house was safe (no items lost)
Leaving the boxing ring would remove that "attack" option BUT they forgot to code something to remove it if the player left via being kicked from the house
Hence they'd be out in the open world, able to attack any player, and those players couldn't even fight back
It's a bit more complicated than that. I got this information from a rswillmissit video I think. He's a runescape youtuber. Every runescape player had a PID assigned on login. Players with a lower PID had their actions processed by the server first. CursedYou had been logged in for hours so his PID took priority over almost everyone. At the same time the player owned houses had trap doors and dungeons under them with pvp. These were VERY high level features so most players hadn't seen them yet, and were constantly pulling the trapdoor to send dozens of players at a time into the dungeon. Somebody pulled the trap door at the same time CursedYou kicked everyone out. CursedYou's action took priority because of his lower PID, then the other players action of entering the dungeon and being flagged for pvp took place.
This was possible in part because of 2 things. 1. Runescape's code had no way of determining a players current location 2. There was a bit of a log animation for actually falling into the trapdoor. The players did a bit of a wiley coyote animation when this happened.
Overall this is the prevailing theory. In truth, the devs themselves never found out what caused the bug. Runescape's code was always spaghetti and depended on an absurd number of flags in the player's profile. In the end, they just developed code to determine a player's location, and remove or invalidate pvp flags if they weren't in a pvp location. They also permabanned Durial321 and made him 1 of only 3 players to ever receive a special note on their account to NEVER unban them.
CursedYou the player throwing the house party was also banned and unbanned when they relized he wasn't responsible. CursedYou was later banned again permanently when they found out he did a low of real world trading of Runescape gold.
Found the vidoe I wgot this info from: czcams.com/video/_prl1Ohn-Ew/video.htmlsi=PDrEE7iQtYMlS_Wg
I remember the boxing rings, I had no idea that’s what caused all this!
A similar thing happened in the release version of AC: Valhalla where normally you are made invisible to hostiles when starting to play a mini game with an NPC (so you don't get attacked by a random passer-by while prone). However, if you left the mini game by a method other than asking the NPC to stop (e.g. fast travel away), the game would fail to make you visible again, and you could attack anyone without fear of retaliation.
That sounds like a fun way to make an alt then make tons
"Bank your items" has become the online equivalent of "Remember the Alamo." I love the fact that this became a canon event in the history of the in-game universe. It's great to see Developers and the community taking such a massive and memeable moments in stride.
Agreed
I know right.
I always love when crazy stuff like this gets the honor of being straight up memorialized either as a fun reminder or straight up actual lore
Even I know not to follow the sheep in that case. If there's anything like a queue or limit to do something like that, you'd just be a sitting duck. Its like watching people running away from something, they always go in a straight line, but in most cases, its best to turn!
"Bank your items" sounds more like "pack your shit!".
The framing device of Frost trying to control Yahtzee’s insane imps is so hilarious to me
We are the imps, don't you know?
I agree. It's almost like Yahtzee going, "here, see if you can keep the buggers occupied for an evening!"
@@politenonparticipant4859
He confiscated my toy dragon :(
@@Asaski09to be fair, the "toy" did fly and breathe fire - and killed four people
A friend of mine was in Falador right near Ground Zero of the massacre. He was there on business - his business? Lobster vouchers. Lobsters being a mid-level fishing resource made them fairly valuable as a food item when selling to other players. So imagine my friend's surprise when Durial cuts around a corner to slaughter several of his customers. Being both an opportunistic businessman and exceedingly self-aware, his first and only thought process was to break from the epicenter of carnage while shitting lobster vouchers all along the way - either to distract Durial, or some hapless bystander who'd get killed by Durial.
CHAFF AND FLARE .... with Lobster vouchers? The internet, ladies and gents...
That is such a hilarious visual of your friend being like "Shit! shit! Shit!" Booking it as they chuck lobsters behind them and seeing some random guy being like "Oh hey a Lobs-" only to be decapitated by one of the rampagers
capitalism 100
noted items ["vouchers" as you call them] can only be dropped all at once, not 1 at a time
You forgot an important detail to end the story on: "Cursed You" (the guy who got 99 construction and hosted the party) got banned after this!
Not because of the party or because of the mass kick or because of the massacre, but rather because he was 'real-world trading' (buying in-game gold from other players with real money), which is how he even managed to get to level 99, since construction is an enormous money sink.
Extra fun fact: the cost of getting 99 is about the same today as it was back then (at least on the classic servers, in term of the actual in-game gold amount) but because of in-game inflation and newer content, back then pretty much the only people who could level construction so high were either RWTs or scammers...
"Bank your items" remains a traumatic phrase to me after all these years
imagine getting banned from a game then having the devs make a boss version of you for people to fight.
Also worth noting that Cursed You was also banned, not for triggering the bug, but because he was caught real world trading (using real currency to purchase in game items/currency), which was against the rules at the time. That would also explain how he shot to 99 in a relatively short time, having the money to buy out the resources needed to max the skill.
at the time? so runescape grinding as an irl side hustle is completely acceptable now? i need to get on the ground floor of this industry
@@lolihitler4198rwt is still bannable but there is legitimate gold purchasing in the form of runescape bonds that you can sell for in-game currency to people who want to spend their in-game gold on more in-game membership.
I know this might be too on the nose, but I would love to see an episode dedicated to Elden Ring's "Let Me Solo Her".
I mean it needs to be made From soft gifted the man a trophy for it
Not too on the nose, but too recent. Time must pass before a story can become a legend and despite its name, Elden Ring is still too young by the standards of video games. Maybe when we finally get SAO level technology it ER might finally be retro enough for this show.
Just looked it up and the guy is a legend.
Eh, The Stuff of Legends is really just a framing device for telling super interesting, weird and fun stories from the games industry. Not super concerned with "time" in this series.@@Edagui97
I appreciate how the developers embraced the bug and made the entire event canon, rather than try and sweep it under a rug.
Congrats durial321, you’ve been immortalised as an in-game terrorist /j
They actually did try and sweep it under a rug for years after the event. The event happened in 2006, and they only officially acknowledged the event happened at 2014 (and the in-game event recreating the event was on its 10th anniversary in 2016)
They never spoke about the event until 10 years later lmao
Frost is so gentle with the imps. Its wholesome. 🌙
Did he buy the little plushies of adventure is nigh, or have they been there the whole time?
Frost you're one of my favorite voices on the Escapist now.
I just love the idea of Yahtzee’s imps are his actual children and Frost is his go-to babysitter
This reminds me of a similar event in Realm of the Mad God’s history. A hacker managed to spawn many bosses including the final boss of the game in the spawn hub area. This killed many players, and the game was perma death for your characters which caused a lot of grief. The developers revived everyone, fortunately.
The event was commemorated in game as well. A new dungeon was made, “Battle for the Nexus,” a boss rush dungeon taking place in a destroyed version of the hub.
You described Runescape perfectly.
Rumor has it that if you visit Falador Square on the anniversary of the event, you'll sometimes spot Ghosts running around telling players to bank their items.
This and The Plague in WoW are two of my favorite internet history events
Great story!
Damn, that single Dennis Nedry frame was fast. Took me a few attempts to catch it!
Nice Kung Fury clip too!
Frost describing Runescape is a masterclass in passive aggression. Well done sir!
I love the intros for these so much, the Imps are such a phenomenal set of characters
1:24 will be the most replayed spot
Still can't catch that frame. I miss the days when CZcams videos could be easily downloaded.
@@anotherfacelessuser Have I got a pro tip for you then: the period and comma keys will move the video by one frame each press when the video is paused
@@user-jw2it4qf2r game changer
Oh man, this happened right after I quit RuneScape. Sounds like I missed all the fun.
South Park should credit RuneScape for their arguably best episode
I don't remember any RuneScape material on South Park. Did you mean "Make Love, Not Warcraft"?
For years, I went to the Escapist site for _Zero Punctuation,_ and only that. Well, I used to watch a ton of _Unskippable,_ which was great, but also long dead. Saw no point subscribing to the youtube channel, especially since the ZP episodes were a week behind. Then the Escapist stopped posting the ZP episode a week ahead of here. When I did subscribe to this channel, I happened to see this new show, and immediately fell in love with it. Now I look forward to this every other week. Truly a tour de force.
love everything about this series,The Stuff of Legends, keep it up!
Love this new series! Thanks brother!
I love this series so much, I literally gasped with excitement when I saw an new episode was out 🤗
The single frame of Wayne Knight was not the jumpscare I expected, but I'm sure it's the jumpscare I deserved.
Shout out to those foolish souls that went around looting all the dead people while an unstoppable serial killer was running around them; they are, if anything, even more morally dubious legends, but still, legends.
Opportunity strikes in unexpected places.
Thoroughly enjoying this series.
There is so much interesting history to RuneScape! Would love to hear more RS content.
I've been waiting for this
man these are always good!
" Do test a man's character do not give him adversity. Lots of men can overcome adversity to test a man's character. Give him power" Abraham Lincoln.
Never stop making this stuff.
The flame thrower got me cracking up. This was good.
1:24 The screen flashes Newman from "Seinfeld" for some reason.
It was only a matter of time, love your work frost
ah yes, the good old days of when escapists have video content creators. RIP.
though ZP is where it all started for me, The Stuff of Legends is my favorite part of the channel.
Same, this was the first time I saw a ZP and then clicked on this
I think the stuff of legends is becoming my fave series on the escapest, between that and ZP
Starting to love this series.
I remember this happening as I was there. I loved the chaos. Why? Why not.
This is so fascinating!!! And I'd never know about it without this series, love it love it love it, can we get a Yahtzee guest spot with a let's all laugh at the industry that never learns anything tee hee jee
still loving the babysitting setup "oooh no don't cry!"
I love the three or 4 little imps have their own personality that show up. One just serprised about the flamethrower while other childish joy seeing it.
Holy shit I remember this.
It was utter chaos.
This and the famous Member Riots.
THANK YOU I REQUESTED THIS ONE I WAS THERE!!!
Moral of the story, dont throw house parties
Ah, RuneScape. So many spent hours in my youth.
Huh, going from "serial killer" who only killed hostile NPC's to an actual rampaging maniac in an MMO. I like the tonal shifts.
Gotta entertain the gremlins somehow
@@MackRangerPower Wouldn't that make you a gremlin?
Thanks again
I miss being a teenager obsessing over RS. Those were the days.
ahhh i remember hoping for this after the wow episode. this is history ❤
This series is the stuff of legends!
this series is excellent
Agreed!! HUGE FAN of this series!
There were other similar events if I recall right, having to do with a new spell in one instance and even banker npcs being targetable
Its such a chaotic evil thing to do, its actually legendary
God I love this series.
One thing he didnt touch on is how messy the cleanup of this massacre was. The damage was too localized to warrant a rollback and too many players were requesting to be reimbursed for items they didnt even lose or have. Barely anyone got their gear back.
I like the use of the OSRS soundtrack in this video
I'd never heard of this before today. I'd stopped playing runescape a year or 2 before this happened.
I'm surprised there wasn't another player who could fight who jumped in to be the hero to this villain.
I knew this was gonna end up on here eventually
What a time to be alive
How in God's name is a discussion of a RuneScape event also a good way to get people to question from whence meaning arises xD
ahh the old days were fun :P i was around dureing this event
We love you frost!
I fucking love this series. It's been a long time since Escapist had a good non-ZP program.
Bit back-handed there, but glad you're enjoying lol.
We'd recommend Adventure is Nigh, Cold Take, Design Delve, and Lost in Time as well.
Adventure is Nigh is also good, but I think it could benefit with some recap / highlight videos.
Damn, I mean, you be you, but wow. Serious talents here working hard round the clock, round the globe. Sure it’s not for everyone but, it’s pretty clearly quality.
constant annual reminder this happened the night of 6/5/06 not actually on 6/6/06
In the olden days, us wizened folk would call this "for the lulz."
Hey, if you’re here to find out what the split second image was, it was Newman.
I joined the day after the original Party Hat in 2001, so I didn't get one. Also I remember the ghost glitch where players could leave the halloween quest still wearing the bedsheet but with screwed up animation lol
I was there, I was in the fally bank when i saw people dying in the town square, i immediately banked as i was poor and could not afford to replace anything. :p
Gotta love a good HIMYM reference.
I could go for a sandwich.
Said in that buttery voice, I'd believe any platitude.
This makes me wonder if Stuff of Legends will ever cover the Monkey Nut economy.
Dumbledore came down protecting hogwarts telling people to bank items 😂
Who is that guy blinking at 1:24 ?
Amazing voice. I'm going to find books you've narrated. 😊
I had no idea this happened, but it sounds like a precursor to the WOW corrupted blood glitch. Very cool story regardless.
Random Newman frame thrown in there 😂
Neat!
1:24 Dennis Nedry?
"Monkey's on typewriters could write Shakespeare given enough time, but are just as likely to write Mein Kampf" is now a permanent part of my lexicon.
omg, ten second timer to keep on killing 😅
What was that subliminal flash during the tripping animation?
Newman. Also fyi: if you pause a youtube video you can progress backward and forward by a single frame by pressing < or > on your keyboard.
The character "Dennis Nedry" from Jurassic Park (played by Wayne Knight, who also played the character of Newman from Seinfeld)
BANK YOUR ITEMS !
BANK YOUR ITEMS !!
It reminds us why we play these things and think if given the chance who wouldn't.
This series is quickly rivaling Zero Punction in terms of professionalism and entertainment delivered.
Look up the song Sixth of June by It dies Today, You wont regret.
Runescape was one of my favorite games, then my subscription ran out and i couldn't store my loot, ir use half of it
Lord forgive me I'm about to watch some non-ZP escapist content
Hey uh, at 4:50 there's a massive spanish swear right there in the chat.
EDIT: Nevermind, the entire video has a lot of those.
ngl, with how the runscape team immortalised this event i wonder if durial actually got banned?
Lol all the curses in spanish in the footage
That's funny they even wrote him into the lore.
This is story of a man who just snapped
Cold-Legends
Oh boy! ANOTHER tale of senseless violence, after the Warcraft Funeral Massacre!
I think the moral here is: teenagers have always been psychopaths, and we need more virtual outlets for their violent impulses. If Duriel321 didn't go on a killing spree in RuneScape, he would have done it in his own school. Whatever happened to that guy IRL?
