Yep. We gotta also acknowledge how strong and independent she is as a female in this industry. Mariah persevered through *all* the lows and struggles, never gave into depression or drugs...and over 30+ years into her career, no less. That's very inspiring.

Derek A. B. She had serious struggles from 2001. She had a breakdown that was mentioned in this video because she wanted out of her record contract and her abusive husband, in response he paid radio stations to sabotage her through trash talking and not playing her music. She released albums like Glitter which underperformed, had poorly received film appearances (Glitter being one) and public opinion in general went against her.
Before We Belong Together went supernova a lot of people thought her career was over.

I have a huge Mariah Carey collection with virtually every magazine she’s ever been in and in the early years, she definitely wasn’t claiming ‘black’ like she is now. She even told people pre-fame she was white. Brenda K. Starr, who she sang backup for, admitted to Wendy Williams that Mariah told her she was white and many of her childhood friends have confirmed it. The ONLY reason Mariah now claims she’s black is to appease blacks who are desperate to claim her because she’s a beautiful, talented, light-skinned biracial woman, and knows they will cause an uproar if she doesn’t. EVERY mixed person knows that blacks see them as prettier, smarter ect and want to claim them because it makes them feel better about being black. Mariah knows it too....but she dare not utter it in public.

They didn't give Amy Winehouse 'Best Album' either. Instead they gave it to Herbie Hancock for a record most people have never heard of - they do this from time to time for shock value. Hancock is a legendary musician and deserves respect - and I understand that it shouldn't always be about numbers in terms of sales - but 'Back to Black' was simply a fantastic record by anyone's standards. And the U2 record that won Best Album when Carey's 'Emanication' was nominated was a fucking abomination. She was robbed and I do sometimes think there's an element of sexism involved.

Ahh. I'm English so I got the y versus ie thing wrong! But I agree. Don't get me wrong - very often sales doesn't equate quality - otherwise Justin Bieber would be drowning in grammys. But sometimes, as in 'Back to Black' it does. And album for album 'Emanicpation' was clearly better than that U2 record. Much was being talked about the _death of rawk_ and female artists were consistently outselling the men's stuff (for a change!) I sincerely believe this threatened some people. They wanted to push sales for the established old rock guard.

This interview actually made me cry. I could hear the pain in her sighs right before she'd answer a tough question. However, I think there was beauty in her vulnerability and I admire her for giving authentic answers. So many people give her crap for being a diva and/or for how she's turned out, but I think she's incredibly strong given everything she's been through in her life. It's easy to judge a celebrity from a distance, but I think it's important to remember that even when they do give a personal interview like this, we still don't know 90% of what actually goes on behind the scenes.
You're not the only one! Everybody hates the Grammy's! Mariah's talent deserves sooo much more than 5 Grammy's but whatever...

CZcams’s algorithm keeps recommending Mariah Carey interviews, and I have to say, CZcams is proving to be Carey’s greatest publicist and Carey is proving to be her own greatest spokesperson.
I’ve only come to know Mariah Carey’s put-upon “diva” persona, and I’ve always found her ‘dahhhling’ affectations to be off putting. Watching older interviews from the mid-90s through to the mid-2000s has been a revelation. She was so well composed, so professional, so intelligent and I am so impressed with her. Also, in her earlier years, many of her talk show appearances were promotions for children’s charities-particularly to support adopted and neglected kids.
I’ve always loved Mariah Carey’s music and her voice and have felt she is overlooked for her songwriting talent and her clever/witty lyrics, but these older interviews have opened my eyes to seeing her as an all-around impressive human being. I think I am now more a fan than ever.
She literally has nothing left to prove. People wrote her off after Glitter, but she made the biggest comeback of the century with TEOM and WBT.
Growing up I had always heard about Mariah’s fame and legacy happening just before I was born (from my older siblings and parents) and I always enjoyed her music when we used to put her 90s cds and cassettes on in the car. And I remember 2005-2006 so clearly when she was everywhere and back on top, which I remember being a little bit surreal since I’d heard so much about her and her career and then it carried into my life and I got to experience it too. Such a good time!

Light skinned black is an oxymoronic term only if you use the word "black" as a colour. Then yes. But in this case we're talking about black as a race. Then it means "black ppl that are lighter than others". Yes she's mixed & so what ? I'm mixed too (black dad, greek mom) but just like Mariah i also feel closer to my black heritage whereas i'm very light skinned and ppl oftenly think i'm moroccan or spanish.
