For Ariana, she was pointing out that if Ariana Grande wants to make a long career she has to promote herself as Ariana Grande and not as « The Next Mariah Carey ». She is smart but people are so focused on her look, her manners.

She wasn't born wealthy. Her background has stayed with her despite all the money.
She is hood. Lol. Bit of trivia: she grew up w/ her "working class" mother in Long Island (an on again/off again, free lance vocal coach) w/ her 2 older siblings. Her father had a very prosperous career in aeronautical engineering, but he remarried and started anew (due to the racial tensions surrounding his relationship w/ Mariah's mother). They moved around a lot, so money was pretty tight/compromised.
This woman alternated b/w Long Island + the city of NY to record her debut album while still in HS (this was around '87-'88)! She had holes in her shoes (listen to her song "Make it Happen") while taking the subway/walking multiple blocks to and from the studio. She came from extremely humble beginnings, but she worked damned hard to get where she is today. For anyone doubting her musicianship or artistic credibility: listen to the "club"/dance remixes of her #1 singles (Dreamlover, Fantasy, Honey, My All, Heartbreaker, etc). She has MULTIPLE rearrangements of her songs, different key changes, extra lyrics, different tempos, added melodies, and so on! This woman is an effing beast and deserves ALL of her flowers! Much respect to this living legend! 🦋❤️🦋
Sidenote: the "diva" schtick is merely for comedic relief. MC is helia witty & intelligent, henceforth why her "shade" is so effective. She's full of punchlines. 😊🙌🏾

here's my opinion on Mariah doing Idol. First, I agreed with her husband that she was to successful for the show. Then years later, after watching many of her videos here on youtube I concluded there is no one better for that show. She is the consummate talent and her discography covers everything. When you've done it all, its time to start giving back. But she may have been set up by the producers who job it was to boost ratings, which I can understand her resenting.
