I was wanting to get the 5k iMac but I hear it has a lot of lagging and stuttering issues like dropping the FPS just in general using the UI. I've experienced this on the Macbook Pro retinas and don't want to deal with it on the 5k iMac. Did this 5k lag for you? If it did maybe I'll just go with the 2.5k iMac since it doesn't seem to have the lag.

You didnt make the pricing clear enough..other companies such as dell who make 4k displays sell their monitors at $2500, these are just the displays not a desktop pc, you will need to buy a separate PC to go with that 5k display. But with the iMac you get a full pc and a 5k monitor with the same price.

I apologize if you've answered this question, but which components, if any would you recommend upgrading from the factory? I do lots of photo editing and always save my work on an external hard drive. For RAM upgrade, I believe I can do that at later time for less cost. So more specifically, between the processor and the type of storage, which would be the most beneficial? Thank you!

Its interesting, I compared the 27in retina to the 2013 iMac, which is the one I have, and it all depends on how close you are to the screen. if you are fairly close to the screen, you'll see a HUGE difference. But where I have my iMac sitting on my desk, if I'm in my chair, and I reach straight towards the machine, the tips of my fingers are about 5-6in away from it, and from that distance I couldn't tell a difference at the store.

For me the 5k was worth it. I used to get tension headaches fairly frequently and I thought it was my ergonomics, but after using the 5k iMac for a few months, I haven't had a single tension headache. (I work from home on the computer for 8-10 hours a day). I realized it must have been the average display I was using before. Most of us geeks agonize about specs like SSDs, RAM, and CPU, but don't overlook how good this screen really is. It's what you're staring at for a good portion of your life. Don't underestimate how how that affects you. I can barely look at my previous monitor now that I've been using the 5k retina iMac.
Also, I picked up one of the first refurbs in the Apple store. Literally, the first day they had 5k iMacs in the refurb section I bought mine. I did have a quick, barely noticeable flicker in the screen at a regular interval, but all it needed was graphics driver update. After I installed the newer driver from ATI, I've had no problems whatsoever. I got applecare just in case though.

Thanks for an informative video. The difference in the speed between the 1 TB HDD and the 1 TB Fusion drive was good to see. As expected, the Fusion drive is much faster than the HDD but most likely still slower than an SSD only drive.
As a developer I would like to know if text displayed on the 5k Retina iMac is is noticeably sharper and clearer than late 2013 27" iMac.. Guess a trip to the Apple store will resolve that for me.

For picture retouching you will better go with EIZO monitors for real colour display instead of 5K false colour with just better resolution. I have iMAC 27 late 2012 and I was trying to calibrate my monitor with external expensive devises which never worked properly causing some weird colour cast.

Great comparison of the Apple 5k iMac and the regular iMac. I decided to get the regular iMac and instead of the 5k iMac and spent the extra money on upgrades. Also the regular iMac can be used, down the road, as a monitor for a newer iMac or Mac Pro computer but from what I understand the 5k iMac cannot, that was another reason for my decision to by the regular iMac computer.

My question is: Will Iris Pro Graphics 6200 or AMD Radeon be able to run Adobe Creative Cloud programs like InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop? I've heard that AMD Radeon causes your computer to heat up more quickly than NVIDIA GeForce. Is it true?

Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought desktop real estate was measured in actual area, not pixels. Also, much of what was shown here had very large empty spaces when not having 5+ windows on one screen. It seems that the average programs & online media layout aren't yet at the level where you would truly benefit from a 5k display.

A "Fusion Drive" is not a hardware device, it's a software RAID available in OS X that combines an SSD with a regular hard disk to get a large & fast storage area. If you have an SSD and a Hard Disk in a Mac, you can create a Fusion Drive volume using Disk Utility: www.macworld.com/article/2014011/storage-drives/how-to-make-your-own-fusion-drive.html

Thermal issues with benefit the mac pro in terms of durability and sustained performance, particular in the Graphics card department. It's also easy to update in the future. In the other hand if I was about to buy a mac pro I will wait for V3 Xeons to roll, and with a little luck a W9100 derived graphics.

Wow, you run Borderlands so slow on that machine...
I mean, I have mid2011 model, and I completed this game without any hiccups. Well, mostly... ) I just turn AA settings to 2x or off, everything else was at maximum on 1080p res.

Yes, iMac is good for 3D animation making. But the pixels are really sharper.

yamitha999 He is messing with you. It will do good, but if that is your main line of work you will be better with other machine. In particular if you earn your living with 3D animation a different machine will do more sense. 3D animation can take hours for the end product. This machine is not designed for this kind of intensive work. But if you are a beginner of an aficionado the machine will do. You can upgrade your machine faster (instead of changing components you sale your machine and buy a new one) to stay up to date.
      Best regards,

yamitha999 Better off going with the Mac Pro - if you get REALLY interested in video editing you will be wanting graphics cards (yes, two) that can handle 4K editing. The maxed out current 27" iMac just doesn't cut it; though if you are only looking at learning via FCPX (or similar) and using only 1080p footage, then any old Mac will do - even a second hand or refurbished 2011 21.5" iMac like the one I use. As others have said, they do have an excellent resale value and you can move onto something far more appropriate (and expensive) for high-end use at a later date.

Seriously Apple, that bezel is ridiculous on a screen like that. TV's have gone bezel-less and for good reason -- waaaaaay more immersive.

On the subject of VESA mounts: Everybody should be aware before ordering that the 2014 iMac 5k MUST be ordered with a VESA mount at time of purchase. Found out the hard way. An Apple VESA mount cannot be added without complete teardown on these 5k units.
