One of the best comparisons I've even seen on youtube ;)
Tx man!
I bought the 5K iMac last week and am absolutely over the moon with it! Its über fast and its screen is awesome. Its worth the extra pennies.
Darren Weavers
did you get i5 or i7 model
Good video on how the two computers compare with each other. Thank you for making this video.
Excellent review. You covered a lot of the important things!
Does the 5K get hotter and does it produce more fan noise compared to the older model?
nice video!!!! good job on explain the differences
Good comparison, very well presented and fluently spoken. Not one "aahhm" and "ohhhm" like most videos on CZcams.
Good review mate. Thanks for sharing :)
Thanks for the great review. Just out of interest what is the base plate you use for the rotating shots? Thanks
Plz test iMac 5k with i7 and M295R9
I was wanting to get the 5k iMac but I hear it has a lot of lagging and stuttering issues like dropping the FPS just in general using the UI. I've experienced this on the Macbook Pro retinas and don't want to deal with it on the 5k iMac. Did this 5k lag for you? If it did maybe I'll just go with the 2.5k iMac since it doesn't seem to have the lag.
Which mac could you recommend for CAD modeling and renderwork (+adobe programs)
Great review! I liked the rotating base, what is it?
Great review and comparison!!
Thanks mate for helping me great video. Subbed
I got mixed up so which one is better for video editing?
It's fantastic with a 4K video camera for your. I use a 4K video camera and i have recorded 4K video at 100 MB/s and 60/s when a 23 minute video is 18 GB in size. It looks fantastic when playing 4K video before the video get uploaded to CZcams or for something else.
Thank u for posting this video and so helpful
Great video. I just yesterday purchased the 27 inch imac and didnt know that the 5k model was only 200 more so Im going to most defiantly go spend the extra cash to get the 5k after watching your video thanks for the info
Great comparison.
Very good review and comparison
What about a 5K IMac Vs Mac Pro?
Hi, I just wonder is it Retina Display good for eye health? thank you in advance :D
You didnt make the pricing clear enough..other companies such as dell who make 4k displays sell their monitors at $2500, these are just the displays not a desktop pc, you will need to buy a separate PC to go with that 5k display. But with the iMac you get a full pc and a 5k monitor with the same price.
But you cant compare the iMac display to a professional 4K or 5K monitor.
Hoerkelis What the hell are you talking about? Movie studios have been using apples 2k monitor for years to edit blockbuster movies this 5k display is even better than those! Every reviewer is claiming this is the best 4k+ display in the market, even better than most 4k tvs.
Hoerkelis this are the specifications, just because you dont like apple does not change the facts.
supbrotv I showed you the fucking facts and 79% Adobe RGB is crap if you need accurate colors, for facebook it is fine i guess.
Hoerkelis if its fine for large media companies in hollywood then it should be fine for everyone else. If you can get ab etter 5k pc for this price then go ahead buy one.
Sir ( 2nd hands ) i5 MACBOOK is better OR ( New one ) i7 DESKTOP COMPUTER is better ) FOR SHORT FILM VIDEO EDITING ?
Can u replay fast ?
I apologize if you've answered this question, but which components, if any would you recommend upgrading from the factory? I do lots of photo editing and always save my work on an external hard drive. For RAM upgrade, I believe I can do that at later time for less cost. So more specifically, between the processor and the type of storage, which would be the most beneficial? Thank you!
Should I upgrade a CPU or a GPU for video, audio editing and photoshopping? The each upgrade costs the same $250.
Or should I upgrade memory to 16GB or 32GB? In other words, what will make the biggest impact to multi media editing job?
Whats is the best deal, Apple 27" iMac (Late 2013) or Apple 21.5" iMac with Retina 4K Display (Late 2015) ? Both is 1299. Thanks
unlike normal iMac, Whin the 5k star, the desktop did not appear smoothly
Is that usual ??
Hi brother you doing job fantastic I love that so I need one help from you I. I have iMac 21.5” normal one so I want to go iMac 27” 5k one so I don’t know it’s big deference with 21.5 let me know know abut this thank you
Its interesting, I compared the 27in retina to the 2013 iMac, which is the one I have, and it all depends on how close you are to the screen. if you are fairly close to the screen, you'll see a HUGE difference. But where I have my iMac sitting on my desk, if I'm in my chair, and I reach straight towards the machine, the tips of my fingers are about 5-6in away from it, and from that distance I couldn't tell a difference at the store.
I do have lots of movies on dvd. Now I'm watching them on 24" 1920x1200 display and they look like shit but they are watchable.
Will they look worse on retina display or similar?
Is 2012 and 2013 using same screen?
are there different between them ?
I still have the “2.5k” Mac. Upgraded the memory and SSD now. It’s great.
Yeap did same on mine and its 2013 works like a champs.
For me the 5k was worth it. I used to get tension headaches fairly frequently and I thought it was my ergonomics, but after using the 5k iMac for a few months, I haven't had a single tension headache. (I work from home on the computer for 8-10 hours a day). I realized it must have been the average display I was using before. Most of us geeks agonize about specs like SSDs, RAM, and CPU, but don't overlook how good this screen really is. It's what you're staring at for a good portion of your life. Don't underestimate how how that affects you. I can barely look at my previous monitor now that I've been using the 5k retina iMac.
Also, I picked up one of the first refurbs in the Apple store. Literally, the first day they had 5k iMacs in the refurb section I bought mine. I did have a quick, barely noticeable flicker in the screen at a regular interval, but all it needed was graphics driver update. After I installed the newer driver from ATI, I've had no problems whatsoever. I got applecare just in case though.
very useful video! thank you very much!
Have you done a Fusion drive vs Flash drive?
Solid review man
Thanks for an informative video. The difference in the speed between the 1 TB HDD and the 1 TB Fusion drive was good to see. As expected, the Fusion drive is much faster than the HDD but most likely still slower than an SSD only drive.
As a developer I would like to know if text displayed on the 5k Retina iMac is is noticeably sharper and clearer than late 2013 27" iMac.. Guess a trip to the Apple store will resolve that for me.
I have got a 5K iMac custom built with a 4 Ghz prosser with a 4 GB video card and with 32Gb of ram and 3Tb fusion hard drive. My last iMac was fully spect with the 3.4 ghz and 2 Gb video card and 32 Gb of ram and a 3Tb fusion hard drive. I found both iMacs go a lot better fully spec then the standed built. All my macs are fully custom built.
I hate how imac have their usb ports and SD slot in the back. they should put it in the front where all the empty space is for their logo. still missing audio input.
very good comparison
nice review, just subbed,
i want one with 16 gb ram:P, cause i work with after effects, or is 8 GB enough?
16 minimum
For picture retouching you will better go with EIZO monitors for real colour display instead of 5K false colour with just better resolution. I have iMAC 27 late 2012 and I was trying to calibrate my monitor with external expensive devises which never worked properly causing some weird colour cast.
Great comparison of the Apple 5k iMac and the regular iMac. I decided to get the regular iMac and instead of the 5k iMac and spent the extra money on upgrades. Also the regular iMac can be used, down the road, as a monitor for a newer iMac or Mac Pro computer but from what I understand the 5k iMac cannot, that was another reason for my decision to by the regular iMac computer.
Wow thats huge for me too for down the road , I came across a excellent condition late 2013 imac 27 like this one without 5 k and this helps me deciding to get it or not as well ,, I might do it
interesting video. I would like to ask you two questions master! Would an SSD fit in a 2.5K IMac and would a 5K Thunderbolt display work with a 2.5K? mine is 2012
2.5k for 5k will not work, for obvious reasons. hdd can be replaced with ssd for similarly obvious reasons.
I want to replace my MacBook Pro with an imac .is it true?
Just got a 2014 4ghz 32 gb with i7 for under $1200. These are really and capable beautiful machines!
The new 21.5-inch iMac will be a 4K (4096 x 2304) display and come with Iris Pro Graphics or AMD Radeon by the end of October 2015. My question is: Will Iris Pro Graphics 6200 or AMD Radeon be able to run Adobe Creative Cloud programs like InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop? I've heard that AMD Radeon causes your computer to heat up more quickly than NVIDIA GeForce. Is it true?
Hi there! I am trying to upgrade the ddr ram to 32gb and don't know which one to buy... Maybe something inexpensive but great if not good. What would you recommend? Thanks and great review!
You can find sets on BH I am not affiliated to them, but I like Photography and they are great.
Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought desktop real estate was measured in actual area, not pixels. Also, much of what was shown here had very large empty spaces when not having 5+ windows on one screen. It seems that the average programs & online media layout aren't yet at the level where you would truly benefit from a 5k display.
excellent video!
thx good comparison
Just opened up my new baby: Base 5k Retina except I traded the 1T Fusion for a 250GB SSD on the theory that one less moving part to break and with thunderbolt I can hook up an external HD and still be wicked fast. Going to hook up my older 30" CinemaDisplay to have some serious desktop real estate!
I was wondering why most of these reviews don't test the frame rates at 1440p as that would be a closer native resolution and would maybe help with scaling issues?
Considering that I am at the point of upgrading my 23 inch iMac to the new 27 inch 5k iMac, this comparison report is timely and I consider it to be excellent comparison. I appreciate the comment on the comparison of Final Cut and Premiere when using the 27 inch 5k iMac when editing video. Very well done. Thank you for your obvious hard work and effort.
Did you enjoy the 5k? I had purchased one. Its getting long on the tooth and I wish I could buy an i9 or Apple Silicon replacement. That aside it was a great computer for work and some personal asks such as iMovie.
Extremely professional video. Great work guys.... Or guy? Which ever the case maybe 👍
so nice video keep it on...!!!!
What an excellent comparison. Thank you. I am about to buy a 5K iMac. I have to decide quickly as I have a buyer for my 2011 model. My question is this: is it better to get the standard 5K model and upgrade the RAM and an SSD drive myself? If so, how easy is it to fit a 512 Crucial SSD drive?
hi Ken, thanks so much for your nice words. I would defenitiy recommend buying the base model and upgrading it yourself. any ssd would work on the iMac I believe.
MW Technology Many thanks.

Darshan Davis i am part of the pc master race. so go cry to your mum.
A Mac is a PC, FAIL!!!
Can the CPU be upgraded to i7 on the older iMac? Also same question for the ram and drive to ssd?
yes.... to i7 and NVME
thankd for posting the cinebencz
I guess my 2013 is stilk good enought for regular everyday use so i will save myself money. It might be old but it works and its fine with me.
Hi hi
Any one still here lol
Question of today’s technology , I like this size of monitor that’s why I’am asking ,
Question can one add FaceTime or google calling duo on this unit ? I’m dumb so I’m asking , also I’ve google Assistant on my iPad working dimmer switches for lights and stuff , can I make use of all that using this iMac ? Any help would be great
dell just recently released a 5k display... no that anyone would know the difference between that and 4k
Intro bit at a sloth on the 2013 model. It now wins by default.
And where is Cinebench R15 openGL score ???? why why why there is not ????? I want to know the difference.
Ok so my late model 2013 27" iMac says it has 2560 x 1440 display, so is that 4k?
BrazosportRoofing lol, no. its that hard to google how 4k resolution looks?
If your price prediction about the upcoming 5k Cinema displays is true, then it would be better to just buy one of those and build a faster pc with the difference in cash. Just throwing it out there for those that might be more interested in the display technology.
Finally someone who calls 2560x1440 2.5k rather than the whole "2k" bullshit (1920x1080 on a 16:9 is "2k")
Or just QHD if you will.
Great video!! Thank you! from jpn
Try the ultraflix app
I dont understand why his says the 5 K is so much more expensive. If you option them the same ie. same clock speed and fusion drive, they are about 100 bucks a part. Steal of a deal to get 5k thrown in for that.
Hi, ive recently bought a 21.5 inch iMac (2013) and im wondering if i could use it as an external monitor for Windows laptops and how can i achieve this? my windows laptop has both hdmi 1.4 and mini DP 1.2, but does not support thunderbolt 2/3.
Do I need a tower for them???
no. iMac is an all-in-one desktop pc, so you dont need to have a tower.
+Kayla Cooks Noob
Old imac has THUNDERBOLT 2 TOO
Thenk U for Your Video!!! Whtary beautifool.
Don't think you can dual boot with a fusion drive ?
+mat2090 You can dual boot with any kind of drive... HDD, SSD, Hybrid... it makes no difference.
A "Fusion Drive" is not a hardware device, it's a software RAID available in OS X that combines an SSD with a regular hard disk to get a large & fast storage area. If you have an SSD and a Hard Disk in a Mac, you can create a Fusion Drive volume using Disk Utility: www.macworld.com/article/2014011/storage-drives/how-to-make-your-own-fusion-drive.html
i got thunderbolt on my asus rog notebook g750jw :), 5k imac looks amazing by the way
I bought one and the only thing I don't like about it, is that the 1080p video on CZcams looks like it's in 360p, because of it's high resolution. With the 1440p video and 4k, it's perfect.
If I got this and loaded windows onto it, it would be beast for gaming :D
Great review,
The advantage with the mac pro is if you will be hammering the machine all they long. Thermal issues with benefit the mac pro in terms of durability and sustained performance, particular in the Graphics card department. It's also easy to update in the future. In the other hand if I was about to buy a mac pro I will wait for V3 Xeons to roll, and with a little luck a W9100 derived graphics.
Hello thank you for explanation between old iMac and new iMac
i need your advice please i have iMac 2012 Late
iMac (27-inch, Late 2013)
3.5 GHz Intel Core i7
8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
1 TB fusion HD
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M 4096 MB
should i change it to anew iMac 5K
thank you
Depends on your computational needs and not your computational specs.
You don't need the new iMac 5K, all you need is to add more ram, and a fast external hard drive with at least 12TB with SSD and also an external 4K monitor that's all you need.
CAMARALIE STUDIOS
Who is that "you" you talk about?
And why 12 TB? And should that 12 TB consist of SSDs?
I just ask, as I have about 40 to 50 TB of storage capacity and do no think everyone needs more than 1 TB.
I use 3.2 late 2013 27 /16ram/1tb ssd
Love the comparison, hate the data reporting.
I think regular iMac with Fusion Drive drive is the best choice.
But does it work?
That is a PC with average hardware for gaming but without good cooling... it will suck...
this is madness
2:13 Machupichu - Perú ♥
Wow, you run Borderlands so slow on that machine...
I mean, I have mid2011 model, and I completed this game without any hiccups. Well, mostly... ) I just turn AA settings to 2x or off, everything else was at maximum on 1080p res.
does imac 5k good for 3d animation? i havent used mac coputers before.
Yes, iMac is good for 3D animation making. But the pixels are really sharper.
Thank you very much !
yamitha999 He is messing with you. It will do good, but if that is your main line of work you will be better with other machine. In particular if you earn your living with 3D animation a different machine will do more sense. 3D animation can take hours for the end product. This machine is not designed for this kind of intensive work. But if you are a beginner of an aficionado the machine will do. You can upgrade your machine faster (instead of changing components you sale your machine and buy a new one) to stay up to date.
Best regards,
Jaime Duncan thank you verymuch friend! :) looking forwrd to buy a mac. looking for the right mac to match with my needs. currently learning video and photo editing and im intersted in learning 3d animation.
yamitha999 Better off going with the Mac Pro - if you get REALLY interested in video editing you will be wanting graphics cards (yes, two) that can handle 4K editing. The maxed out current 27" iMac just doesn't cut it; though if you are only looking at learning via FCPX (or similar) and using only 1080p footage, then any old Mac will do - even a second hand or refurbished 2011 21.5" iMac like the one I use. As others have said, they do have an excellent resale value and you can move onto something far more appropriate (and expensive) for high-end use at a later date.
Kudos
Dude it's the same thing both incredible, only a professional could find the differences
All imac's is the best !
cool vid
5K Cinema display with Thunderbolt 2.0? I don't think so.
all in crispy 1080p lol actually for 6 yrs ago that's great lol
1,366K for the win! :D
Waiting for the re-design.
Seriously Apple, that bezel is ridiculous on a screen like that. TV's have gone bezel-less and for good reason -- waaaaaay more immersive.
5 years later, still same bezel. lol
On the subject of VESA mounts: Everybody should be aware before ordering that the 2014 iMac 5k MUST be ordered with a VESA mount at time of purchase. Found out the hard way. An Apple VESA mount cannot be added without complete teardown on these 5k units.
