I went with this config because I believed it had the best value. I didn't want to max out the ram because its too expensive, thats why you should use the link below to get 32gb ram for only 150 USD! Apple charges hundreds for this ram! The SSD drive is very important and apple gives you one like no other! its Blazing Fast 1GB READ AND WRITE up to 4x faster than SATA SSD. I upgraded the video card because its a substantial difference and because I'm gamer. This is the first Imac that I feel has very little compromise, you get a lot for your money!
In the 2014 version GPU and CPU overheated causing system slow downs and instability, this problem is now fixed! If you have a 2012 or 2013 imac this latest version is worth it as the CPU runs at 4.2ghz and the video card can handle the latest games at 2k res! thats impressive!

the imac truly is a beautifully crafted machine. I do think the fact that it is well a well built, very stable computer justifies the high price the slightest bit. There truly is no other machine like it.
I do agree with but try telling that to an apple hater. You wanna know the really weird thing?! I used to be one I always told people that if they got a system with better specs or if they built it them selfs that it would be better. But I now love the all in one concept. They just need to find a way to make it upgradeable because thats more of a technical problem. Once you add that it becomes more clunky and annoying but perhaps its possible?
+SERGE I think it could be done, but it might take away a bit of that elegant unibody design. Maybe if the just added the ability to access ram and hard disk, that would be good enough for me. I personally believe that both Mac and PC have their place in the world and neither of them are better than the other. To say that one is flat out better than the other seems ignorant to me. The Mac does offer a truly different and awesome experience that can't be found anywhere else. Go in with an open mind and you'll most likely enjoy it. Unfortunately many don't.

Thank you for that nice review and all your advice. I have an early 2009 iMac 24 without any issues since 2009 but it's maybe time for upgrade. My dilemma is if I should I wait for the next model or buy the current one.
as far as HDMI, there is an adaptor from thunder to HDMI. I use 2 extra monitors this way.
+Chilupian. CC&C yeah an adapter is probably the way to go. It's crazy I spent a good hour reading about hdmi and mini display port apparently Apple created its mini display port to defy hdmi and to control companies that try to sue them. Since they hood the rights to mini display port if s company try's to sue them in a legal battle they just revoke there license to use the display port and it shuts that company up. So Apple is pretty much the sole designer and producer but when it comes to hdmi over 100 companies had there hand in the making process including close to six giant companies similar to Samsung in size!

I've had my 5k for three weeks now and I'm loooooving it! the only thing i added was the 1tb fusion drive. Almost got the 2tb version for the extra flash storage but i only need the 24 or 28 that comes with the 1tb.

My brother just ordered this computer and I wanted to see more of a hands-on review, and you spent most of time talking. I fast forwarded through most of it because it was not relevant to me. I already know why I chose that computer for him, and would have liked to have seen the beautiful 5k screen in action, so your video was EXTREMELY unhelpful.

We're using macs at my college so I'll have to get myself an iMac later for a few reasons like this, using the adobe programs like illustrator and animate cc for multimedia, logic pro x for audio production, final cut pro for video production, and I need something more powerful than my macbook pro and plus the iMac has a lot more internal storage. Yeah those are the current courses I'm taking.

I wish I could get one, but all I could afford was the base 21.5” non-retina model - which I sadly had to sell that because it was incompatible with my internet connection (wi-fi looked normal yet I couldn’t browse the internet, not even Google.com, nor go into the Apple Store or anywhere else that required a working connection). :(
Happen to have the Late 2015 iMac here (27" Skylake model). Looking forward to upgrading to macOS Sierra when that's official (assuming that the upgrade will work).

Well... Considering that Siri is making its debut on the Mac, as well as probably other improvements, it'll certainly have more innovations than El Crappy-ton seems to. Although I think Cortana's probably more innovative, but...to have Siri on a desktop, certainly don't have to turn to my iPad to use her much longer.

Well I can say I didn't think this iMac would last for I bought mine in 2016 and here we are in 2024 and it's still going strong. With the keyboard I've never taken it out of it's plastic wrapper so it's as good as new. The mouse works just as well as it did the first time I used it. So an iMac from this era was worth buying after all. The ios when I started was El Capitan and now it's on Monterey.
Time has proven many times now apples quality outshines the competition by 2-8x I still have a 2011 MacBook Pro that runs on one cpu core
And it suppprts 16gb ddr3 ram which is so fast it keeps up with todays machines

I just ordered mine. I do a lot of videos on my 2013 MacBook Pro 13". (Mine are about history and archaeology).
I was thinking of getting the new MacBook Pro, but I couldn't pass up the horsepower and the new screen. The dual microphones alone are going to make a lot of difference. I'll use the old laptop as a mobility platform, and replace it with one of the new iPads in February or whenever they're released. Even the regular old iPad I have now is slightly faster than this laptop.
Where do you get your background music / sound effects ?
And what video editing program do you use? iMovie / Final Cut ?
+BigBudde & BooBoo it's all either trip hop with ambient influences but mostly it's instrumental hip hop.
+BigBudde & BooBoo for video editing you wanna use Final Cut Pro X or Adobe premier pro. The first one is substantially easier to use. But the other one is considered professional.

I am going with the 27 Imac 1799.00 model and then getting the ram upgrade myself . The only other all in one product I was looking at was the i7 Asus 4k which is 1499.00 for a 24 inch . I do believe Asus makes good products but , I want The Mac based on the complete product and benefits.

Hi, i have some question.
- i had a imac 2009 and it died on me a year ago and left me with a windows laptop to edit videos in premiere pro, edit pics in photoshops, lightroom and bit of illustrator which is kinda dying for this kind of task.
- what would your advise be if my budget range is: core i5, AMD Radeon R9 M380, 16GB ram, 256GB Flash storage. Would this be ok? + adding abit of gaming like sims 4.

Hi! Just wondering, as a mainly PC user who games a lot, but has a macbook air for college related stuff, would you still reccomend an iMac for my family home PC? The steam store seems a lot more lackluster on a mac, and i understand you cant install new Graphics cards or components apart from Ram.
So i'm just wondering, is it really worth getting a 5K iMac for my parents? Or should i just get them a Macbook pro? I know that a good looking screen is what will benefit them, but they probably wont use it for much else, which kinda seems like a waste.
+leonthesleepy yeah gaming on Mac is tricky but if you install Windows and duel boot into a Windows environment gaming can be pretty.
That's how I do it. Gaming on Mac has come a long a way but if that fails there's always the Windows route. There's a program called boot camp that helps you install Windows and it works well.
If you have money to throw around the 5k is a sick computer. It might be over kill for a family computer it may be easier yes just as affective if you grab a basic iMac a non retina model but if anyone's gonna game on it your gonna need to upgrade its components or else it's not worth while.
An iMac is a lot more comfortable to use as a family computer than a laptop since the laptops limited in size. Than again it's portable.

Hey Serge! I have a very important question.
I'm currently configuring a 27-inch iMac 5k but I've reached a crossroad. Is there a significant difference between the AMD Radeon R9 M390 vs the AMD Radeon R9 M395? The difference in price is $50. It would be paired with the i7 Processor, 2TB Fusion Drive, and 8GB Ram (which I will later upgrade to 16 or 32). If it helps, the main use for the computer for now would be Video Editing w/ several programs and Photoshop.
Since your going to video edit I would recommend upgrading to the m395x even a 50 dollar difference will go a long way. the video card is used to help accelerate the render and compile times so getting a faster gpu is highly recommend.

I want to ask you something as you are a fan of counter strike: i play a game which is same to counter strike its name is crossfire a game from z8 games if u know it, so i want to get something which can run it smoothly with more than 50 fbs and I won't play any intense game like GTA v or something like this... So I went and took a look at the game and I wanna say yes the i7 model will run the game pretty good even the i5 model will work. if you grab the i7 it will have iris 540 which is what you want its really good for gaming. have you seen my surface pro 4 gaming review?

there is no big difference between 8gb vs 16gb unless you really need it for like video editing or other work tasks.

So I heard the performance of the 5k isn't as good as the none retina, is this true? Also I heard a fusion drive is better for a 5k to speed it up, is this true? Also with a 5k doesn't everything show up very small? Don't you have to bump it down to play games or make things larger and easier to see? After all that bump down, is a 5k still better then a none retina?
+robert Butcher hey great question! The 5k that's the newest model is actually a lot better it appears it's almost 25% better in some games while other games it's almost 40% better. I came from a maxed out 2013 iMac and it was a good upgrade I believe it's worth it. Don't get the fusion drive it's not as fast as the SSD drive.
The 5k res is actually optimized to work with all apps so you don't have issues with small text. Same goes if you install Windows 10 because now Windows 10 supports proper scaling.
After all the bump down the 5k is still a lot better. But if you compare the other 5k the last years model that's the one I would not recommended getting since it has over heating issues called thermal throttling.
You can run some games at 5k and most games at 2560x1440 smoothly.
However it really depends on the game what games do you play?

I'm trying to decide between a macbook pro 15 inch, or the imac 27 inch 5k. Which would be best for 4k video editing in your opinion? I would prefer to get the macbook for portability but also really want a decent machine to edit videos in the future. Thank you in advance!
well macs in general are designed for editing. either the 15" will work or the 27" but the thing is the desktop will be better because its hardware is almost twice as strong plus the bigger screen is a massive canvas to work with meaning you can see more and edit much easier. I recommend the 27" imac because its stronger and easier to use for editing. I even take my imac 27 to friends house to play video games together so its more portable than a regular desktop but somewhere in between when compared to an actual laptop.

I feel like you are not getting a machine that will last if I were to choose the macbook, is that correct? Considering the power of the imac as well as the 5k screen, it gives me the feeling I could use it for years to come.
Most Apple products including the iphone and macbooks and imacs all on average have lasted twice as long! thats really impressive. look at the resale value of top android phones compared to iphone. this isn't just marketing its brain washing can only go so far at the end of the day the product actually has to be good. The macbooks could last long like the imac but laptop and phone computing tend not to because of the smaller components and the damage they incur a desktop is safer from damage and has more wiggle room and air to breath so its bound to last longer.
My best advice is to just get both. why choose when you don't have to. I don't even make a lot of money and I can afford just about anything. I made computers a priority for me in my life but whos to say you can't either?

Get you've helped me before. I bought one of these at Christmas for my wife (along with a Apple Watch). I got her the 2TB fusion drive. She likes it. Is the fusion drive the same as the SSD you reference? We got this and the airport tower for extra memory. We also bought some Bose speakers so she can listen to music. She likes that she can get her messages from her phone - while she's on this computer. Thanks I like the info you give.
hey there glad you came back! the fusion drive is a combination drive of SSD and HDD. its called a SSHD. Theres a small chip inside thats an SSD thats similar to ram that speeds up the computer by temporarialy storing the most used files there its usually about 128gb in size and than the rest of the drive which in this case would be 1920gb is traditional storage on a disk platter. disk based storage is 10x slower.
oh yeah I just woke up its morning here in Oregon USA and i use my Bose sound link mini while getting ready and using the shower. I also bought my gf a BOSE sound link color also a good speaker should be doing reviews on those soon.
yeah being able to message with imessage on the pc and on a phone makes the system a lot more friendly.

Thanks - I have looked at those. Found a business exec, locally that wasn't using his 2013 8gig Mac Air 11". Vey low hours - under 150 - and he still had the original packaging, everything looks like new. Even had a nice Tech 21 Case (I wasn't familiar with this case but it seems fairly nice - he paid 90 bucks for it.. He has the same 27" Fusion IMAC we have - both bought it at the same time...he has several Mac Pros and just didn't need something this small. I Paid him 600 - feel we both made out well. I love it so far - used it quite a bit and it fits in my folio case that I take everywhere. I'm very pleased with the performance and it handles everything I need. Still looking at vids to see how to do things I don't know...LOL. Thanks again for your input and assistance.

I have a 2011 iMac. 27 inch. runs like a kitten. it has been 5 years so perhaps next year I'll take the plunge again. but might go for the Mac Pro. =)
+Chilupian. CC&C I've been through the delemma of trying to decide if I want a Mac Pro or an iMac and almost every time the iMac seems like a better deal. Having the screen integrated into the chassis is really nice there's literally just one power cable that powers it, pure amazing.
Although if I couldn't get the iMac hands down I would get the Mac Pro with a 10 core CPU! That would be pretty awesome. The Mac Pro is an engineering feat I have no idea how they fit so much into such a small body. And it's cool and quiet.
The new retina iMac though features newer arc CPUs which are newer and on most benchmarks perform better.

oh hands down grab the bigger storage it will be really useful trust me. and when you get around to installing windows and duel booting with 128gb thats literally almost no space at all!
If I install Windows on it, I think the buttons will look tiny because of the high resolution screen

I'm almost definitely getting the 27" iMac 5k.I'm going to be editing Video in Premiere Pro for my full-time job. I'm going to spring for the 4.0 processor upgrade- for only $250, it's worth it to me. I'll get the 512 Flash Storage, remember, that's PCIe based- it's *even faster* than _normal_ SSDs! To upgrade to the 1TB Flash for another $500 is just too much for me. I will buy it with only 8GB RAM installed, and add _my own_ aftermarket Memory to bump it up to 32GB, and that should cost *under* $200. I'm only a little unsure of whether or not I will upgrade the Graphics, but for $250, I'll probably do it, since it's for my professional video editing. The only thing that _might_ prevent this exact purchase is if they announce a new iMac before I buy this one!

But I kind of have to get close to the top of the line Specs, because I need my computer professionally, and I need to get several years of strong performance out of it! I'm replacing a *nice* Mac Pro tower that's a 2008! and has served me well, a real workhorse. It actually still runs pretty damn fast and strong, but they don't support Mac OS Sierra on it, so I'm going to retire it. :)

+Kobi Swissa basically I paid thousands of dollars for a slider and the company charged me twice than refused to refund my card which caused a huge head ache and I didn't like the quality of the slider although it has produced some nice shots.

Voyage Thrills it's more powerful. GoPro video take a lot of Space in general. If you record in 4K it's up to 350MB per minute.

hmm looks like they have a 2 year old cpu and they don't offer an SSD and the video card is ok. for around 1999 you can get a 5k imac with modern specs and a good design. I don't see to many reasons aside from it having a Server grade cpu and ram for why you would get it. the touch screen is somewhat over rated its a nice feature to have but most of the time mouse and keyboard will still be better. it touch screen was really that could we would all be using it by now. for now touch screen is just a cool feature.

I have the AMD Radeon R9 M390. Is this alright for games? Im only interested in playing Kerbal Space program with some nice visual mods, I know I won't be able to really stretch it but am just wondering would it suffice?

chances are it will work pretty good but if you can get the highest end graphics setup.
Wish the font color was darker as it is hard to see. Also, when you said to stay away from old HD's and pick SSD, does this mean fusion drives as well? What if you want a larger HD? What should you do?

+Candice Sterling the fusion drive has a dedicated 128gb SSD which prioritized data you use to load faster. Another words it's faster but if you can afford the SSD it's less storage but 10x faster.

yeah I'm surprised the keys are not back light on the keyboard but overall its still one of my favorite keyboards. the magic mouse is good for something not all though. I havent used the trackpad yet I gotta pick one up! if its anything like the macbook I do wanna get one.

practicing laying on a pillow with one eye open? haha jk. thunderbolt in general is a cool concept its the same as HDMI but is smaller and made by apple as opposed to 100 other companies. Yeah while the display it self was cool it was so expensive no reason for it to be like that you can get a new imac for the price! I would say hold off unless you find one for 200-500 USD on ebay or amazon in good condition. even than thats still expensive.

Get the 5k because its got better build quality and software so your user experience will be a lot better! the imac has a much stronger cpu, faster ram its all around just a better computer but if your trying to save on costs I see that this current lenovo is going for 500 USD which is almost 1/4 the cost of the 5k imac so it depends do you want to save money or have a nice machine?
