    The classic Apple iMac 27-inch set the standard for all-in-one desktop computers when it was first introduced, but like all classics, it has aged. Is the iMac still the standard, or have others dethroned it?
    Even after the 5K resolution to the iMac, the design still really hasn't changed. You're still given a pretty thick bezel and there is a lack of a VESA mounting capabilities with the default model (although you can buy one with a VESA mount, you'll just have to specify that in your order). But if something ain't broke, don't fix it, right? The iMac is still a very attractive all-in-one; the use of aluminum throughout the entire body of the system gives it a very solid feel that you won't fight with many other competitors.
    Connectivity on the iMac is generally very good; you have four USB ports, along with two thunderbolt ports. But, something you should be aware of is that the system will not work with other display other than a iMac.
    When it comes to the 5K display, the iMac is still at the cutting edge of screen resolutions. Not only do you get a very sharp looking image, but the detail that Apple has put into even the icons, is all in 5K resolution. Color accuracy and color gamut is also very solid and is a factor most come to expect from Apple.
    Inside the machine, you're given a Intel Core i5, 8GB of RAM, 1TB Fusion Drive, and an AMD Radeon 570 Pro Graphics. Generally, this is a great list of internal components, but you shouldn't expect the iMac to run games at 5K resolution reliably, but it'll do a fine job if you're running your games at 1080p. The speed of the machine is bogged down with the fusion drive, though; you'll get faster speeds if you have a solid state drive, which is an upgradable feature.
    We're not huge fans of the magic keyboard and magic mouse. The keyboard is small, cramped, and there's a lack of NumPad. The magic mouse's ergonomic design could be better; it's a very flat mouse and can feel awkward in the hand. The use of the touch gestures feels a little strange, too. Some users might feel more comfortable purchasing Apple's Magic Trackpad and using that as a mouse.
    Despite its aging design, the Apple iMac remains a very handsome, very quick system, that really benefits from its 5K display. The base value for the 27-inch will cost you $1800, which is pretty pricey. But, if you consider a 5K display alone can cost nearly as much, we think the Apple iMac 27-inch remains to have great value, and is definitely worth your time checking out.

    Nice review, but a couple of points missing:
    1) You said said the keyboard is cramped but there is an option for a larger keyboard (with number pad). In both cases, why make the keyboard bigger if you dont need to. That's desk space you can use for useful stuff and the keys themselves are full sized and perfectly fine.
    2) a benefit of the larger iMac over the 21 inch version is you can install your own RAM. There's a handy door on the back of the machine which flips open. That alone makes the 27 inch upgrade pay for itself (compared with buying RAM from Apple which has always been obscene).
    3) If someone wants a better keyboard or mouse you can plug in a non-Apple one. The trackpad is a worthwhile upgrade especially for the fluid multi-touch gestures which saves loads of time. It's cool that Apple added gestures to the mouse but it's cumbersome.
    4) The user can't upgrade the CPU or graphics so better to opt for upgrades at the time of purchase. Can't upgrade the harddisk either (without ungluing the screen and voiding the warranty) so I second the upgrade to an SSD.

    • @mileni7
      @mileni7 Před 7 lety

      Actually, in 2017 version, you CAN upgrade the CPU yourself. On the rest of the stuff, you are spot on :)

    I bought the latest 5K imac with an SSD upgrade, love the machine. Anyone buying an iMac has to opt in for the magic trackpad. I dont think I will ever use a mouse again.

    the only reason people complain about the bezels is because there are little to no things to complain about it continues to age WELL and I think for years now the bezels will always be pointed out as the thing to change but I don't see a reason to either, they are fine . have no problem with it I love it , its a 27" desktop not a 13" MacBook

    • @tonywilson3892
      @tonywilson3892 Před 7 lety

      Agreed, I would take the mouse over the trackpad any day, especially with a 27" screen. Try dragging a file from one side to the other with a trackpad and you run out of trackpad. the mouse is the winner by a mile and the touch features on it are superb.

    • @Wishwader
      @Wishwader Před 7 lety +1

      Tony Wilson If you run out of space when dragging across the screen you can adjust sensitivity. I can do it even on the older smaller trackpad let alone the new larger one.

    I bought a used Hp Z600 workstation at 2016 for 550euros. It's 9 years old (2010 release date) but it has 2 Xeons (X5650) runs at 2.66GHz (3.22GHz on boost) with 24 physical cores and 48Gb RAM. I bought also a GTX 1070 and there you have it. A freaking beast with 1050euros!!! I'm pretty sure that my machine beats this apple crap...

  • @tipoomaster
    @tipoomaster Před 7 lety +5

    The spec bump is much appreciated, but I was actually surprised they did nothing about those bezels and chin, given the shrinkage on the rest of their products. Those two finger wide bezels make it look dated.
    Also still no video-in, argh.

    • @applebits7637
      @applebits7637 Před 7 lety +1

      tipoomaster Redesign is expected next year. They only do one every 4-5 years, they don’t do tweaks like shrinking the bezels. Also personally I don’t mind the bezels whatsoever, it allows focus on the content rather than surroundings. But the chin can shrink or go.

    • @tipoomaster
      @tipoomaster Před 7 lety +1

      My thing is the bezels could be used for more screen I guess. Or just a smaller desk footprint. I think it keeps with Apples "no millimeter wasted" philosophy to narrow them as much as possible. I should think at least rMBP-sized bezels should be possible now. But if they get shrunk in 2018, cool.

    • @applebits7637
      @applebits7637 Před 7 lety

      tipoomaster Yeah smaller bezels are possible, probably smaller than the MBP, but it will always reduce the internal space, and that’ll be significant on the iMac. I wouldn’t mind 2-3x MBP bezels.

      @xuancuong8x Před 7 lety +2

    • @cactustweeter2890
      @cactustweeter2890 Před 6 lety

      In favor of the Mac. The iMac uses PCIe were most PCs use SATA. In 2015 my 27 inch 5K iMac had ~1200MB/s reads and writes. The 2017 5K iMac improves of that.

    5k font appearance is so small that people have to drop the resolution to 2.5k or 1080P To make the machine usable. There is no way to increase the font size in 5K mode.

    It's fantastic BUT:-
    1) Thinner bezels could be done.
    2) the keyboard needs to be wider. It's too crowded.
    3) The mouse isn't great and Logitech do a much nicer one.
    These are all pretty easy to remedy.

    I have a few questions about this iMac that I'm hoping you can answer.
    What type of projects do you edit?
    Have you tried editing 4K footage with this computer?
    Does this particular iMac make any fan noise when rendering videos or 4K footage?
    If yes, how loud does the fan get?
    Have you upgraded the Ram?

      Then why are you watching it? Makes no sense. For me it’s Apple or nothing, last iMac lasted me over 10 years, most likely I could but a new power supply and still be using it, but wanted 27 inches and more speed. Would never go back to a window pc, couldn’t give me one.
