    I was lucky enough to get a 2020 model i5 for free from my employer who was swapping these out. I love it! Upgraded the RAM and it replaced my M1 Mac mini. I do a lot of graphics work in PS and this machine flies through it without breaking a sweat. This machine, with the gorgeous display, is a powerhouse to get some serious work done.

    Thanks for the review Craig. I transitioned from Windows to Mac hardware several years ago, and because I already had good peripherals when I made the move I could never justify (budget-wise) getting an iMac. Which was a shame in a way because I've wanted the iMac you just reviewed ever since it released.

    Important Note: The 2020 27" iMacs you can boot off an external SSD if you want to upgrade storage. I do this on my 2017 and it works great. If you want to add an SSD internally you will need to get the 2019 27" iMac which is very similar but note the difference in dates. A viewer reminded me of this and it's something I wanted to note. Booting off external SSDs is the best option for the 2020 if you need to upgrade your bootable storage (not just add an external ssd). Thank you.✔

      My iMac is late 2013, works perfect but due to electricity that erased my internal hd (lots all my years of work) I didn’t want to open and send the hdd for repair I bought external SSD and it made the job! While 5k imac have nice price now, the new imac is first lightweight compared to intel and then should be faster.

    What a great video. I've "complained" a bit that Apple has abandoned the larger iMac, but you're absolutely right about the 2020 27" iMac. It holds up. Mine is a core i7 with 40GB ram, 1TB SSD with the Radeon 5500. I just use it for everyday home office and light business work. The screen is a gem. I've considered going to an Apple silicon Mac mini with a 32" Benq screen, but even that screen doesn't have the pixel density of the retina 5K iMac, and the cost for a two box solution starts going up dramatically if you want a comparable quality screen at 27" or larger. Truthfully I'd much rather have an elegant one box solution for my home office desk. I appreciate the encouragement to hang on to it for a few more years.

    Great video, would love to see more 2020 27" iMac content since I believe this was the last Intel iMac and since the transition to Apple Silicon, has became an under rated beast of a machine.
    For context, I have a M1 Pro 14" with 16gb ram and 1tb and I also use the 2020 iMac 5700xt with 64gb 1tb storage.
    I don't notice that much of a difference, really. The M1 Pro is a bit snappier but other than that, the Intel 2020 iMac I use seems be a great deal considering it's all in one.
    I do gaming, video editing, browsing, and light 3d model/photo editing and I can tell you, I don't notice night and day differences. The thing I do notice a big difference is that I can run more programs on the iMac considering I have 64gb of ram versus 16gb.
    I feel the M1 Max can go head to head against the fully spec iMac 2020 or beat it.
    The M1 pro is not noticeable..actually because of the 5700xt, I feel the iMac wins most of the time in rendering and gaming. I do have to say though, my iMac gets hot often. You can hear the fans good amount.
    M1 Pro base + Studio display will be more expensive than the base iMac 2020. So the iMac is still a good deal but the issue is the support later down the road.

    Was almost on the verge to sell my 2020 i7 10700k, 5500 XT, 16gb ram and 1 TB SSD, but most shops give 560 - 740 bucks for it. Only reason i was thinking about it, is because im not sure that Affinity Desinger will be updated if Apple drops OS support for it. It's my only concern about it, for the rest i don't use my Imac at all. Pure for graphic design, because i'm spoiled with that 5k screen.

    • @craigneidel
      @craigneidel  Před 6 měsíci

    I did this exact thing just over a year ago. iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2020), 3.6 GHz 10-Core Intel Core i9, 64 GB 2667 MHz DDR4. But it only has a 500 GB internal drive so I run it from a 4TB LaCie external SSD. It replaced my late 2014 27-inch iMac. So far, I am quite happy with the setup. I understand Apple has said no new 27-inch iMac is coming BUT maybe, just maybe, something BIGGER than 27-inches. I have my fingers crossed on that.

      Thanks for watching the channel. It's a touch call but I still edit my videos on my 2017 27" imac 5K with 48 GB Ram and SSD. I think you might be good with the 5K iMac for a few years (3 or so) and then can sell it for about 50% of it's value then and upgrade later. I think the screen itself is a huge part of the experience and 5K is incredible. But, the M2 should be slightly faster overall but maybe not if you can pack in some good ram into the 5K.

    Great vid! I am going through this right now. I'm not a power user. Internet, CZcams, watching movies, a little editing and photo work. My 10 year old 27" IMAC is getting a little long in the tooth and it's time to upgrade. But to what? I don't like the idea of a screen size down grade with the 24" IMAC. Mac Mini? but then I have to give up the 5K Apple screen. I wouldn't mind the M2 chip but do I really need it for what I do? I decided I'd be happier with a 2020 27" IMAC. It's a big upgrade from my current model anyway. I was pretty convinced but still researching. Your vid helped me to decide. I figure I'll get at least 4 years out of the 2020 IMAC.

      Thank you. The OS won't be upgradable for too much longer but for the 2020 iMacs it could be a year or two more and then a year or two of security updates. So you should be good for a few years and then it just means you won't continue to get the newest and greatest OS updates. If you are looking to use this about 4 years I think you should be fine and then you can sell it for about 50% it's cost. You can look up info on this on Google. My dad bought this iMac December of 2022 for my sister to use for school/homework, I don’t know the specific specs when he bought it but it’s our first ever Apple computer (we all use iPhones) and it’s beautiful, the screen and volume/speakers.
    We had to buy something quick since our old 2015 AIO Samsung HDD failed and was something completely unexpected, I should’ve been more aware about that but it caught me by surprise when it would just be stuck on a “bootloop” windows 10 blue screen loop head ahhh 🤦💀
    Now looking back we should’ve just bought an M1 iMac instead… oh well

      If you spent 5K on this I would hold onto as long as you can. As long as it can handle your workload. It's hard to replace that 5K screen and I have found that I can take a little performance hit if I have that great 5K screen when working. But, it's hard to say for sure and you will need to determine when you hit any roadblocks on the Intel mac.

    So now it’s 2024 guys and I’m in the market of getting an iMac and I’m interested in getting the 2020 27 inch iMac it has a 10th generation until for I Semon with 512 GB SSD hard drive with 32 GB of ram for $1000 is that worth it especially now also another question is I found a MacBook Pro 13 inch but the same specs for $750 is that also worth buying as well please let me know in the comments and how long will Apple continue to support updates for it and is it still worth it?

      I think the 2020 iMacs are still great values if you can get around $800 to $1,000 since they come with a screen that Apple is basically selling now for $1600. Key is buying a bunch of keep ram and installing it. Obviously the updates will be an issue down the road but you can always load something like Open Core to expand that.

    Great advice Graig. I have a question... we are in February 2024 right now, still a smart purchase for this 2020 27" iMac? I am looking for some options in Macofalltrades and Amazon because refurbished ones from Apple are a bit expensive, how reliable are these sites?

    • @craigneidel

      That's a tough question but the value for this is still good depending on the price you can get it for. You need to get a really good deal. Considering it has the Studio Display built in that is a nice feature. I think if you can get this for under 1K it's still a good value. Of course an M Chip Mac is maybe a smarter choice but you don't get that incredible screen. I still use a 2017 iMac every day.

      Since you can't upgrade ram etc., I think I would just get the M1 Air with 16 GB ram or the M1 14" which you can get on sale now for sure. I have seen those for like $1,200 refurb and they will drop more with the M3. The iMac is better because of the dedicated graphics, 5K screen, and upgradable ram. Plus, it's unique at 27" right now.

    The 2020 27 Inch iMac has been tested, and its maxed out configuration is faster than the maxed out iMac Pro configuration for 3D stuff like gaming, 3d rendering, video rendering, photo rendering. So its basically just the fastest iMac out there. However, there are reports that the M3 iMac with 24B of ram is faster than the 2020 iMac with the i9, 5700XT, and the 128GB of ram which I heavily doubt. However if that is the case, it would be insane to see that the M3 iMac is shockingly the fastest iMac apple has ever made! Not in raw power of course but in real world performance.

    I have a 12 year old iMac 27" that's been flawless all these years - now I can't update the OS, so I've been looking at all the options. I wanted to get another iMac 27" but disappointed the new ones offered are just 24". I really appreciate your video saying it's still worth getting the 2020 27" because after days of trying to wrap my head around which mac mini, which monitor, an external cd drive, and external storage drive, etc my head is spinning. My question is: Over time I have upgraded my current iMac 27" with a 2 Tb drive and upped to 8 gb RAM (installed myself). Are those compatible with the 2020 27"? I.E. can I take it to my computer guru and have them swapped into a 2020 27" if I go that route? Thanks so much!!

      @craigneidel  Před 4 měsíci +1

      I think the ram is a bit faster on the 2020 so you may want to go with faster ram. It's not expensive if all you want is 16 GB. It's like $35 bucks. Also, if you do go with the 2020 you might run into OS issues in a couple of years so just another thing to consider. But, the software should be fine for a good amount of time and so should security updates.

But now I'm seeing you can not add a secondary display to the 2020 iMac? Is that true or are there ways around that? I'm so confused. Can you give me some pointers? Thanks for the nice words. No you can't use the 2017 or 2020 iMacs in secondary display mode. In fact no 5K iMacs etc. even back to 2015. The only thing you can try is something like Luna Display which can help make the monitor into a second screen but it's not 100% perfect and there are a bunch of videos on that if you wanted to try it. So if you are trying to use the 5k iMac as a screen it's not easy and not perfect but Luna Display is one option and I recommend watching some videos on the pros and cons. Thank you.

      Larry O'Connor of OWC instructs to only use RAM Sticks of the same denomination as the MAC will recognize ALL Ram Stics as the Amount of the Smaller Sticks. So Your 24GB / 2 - 4's & 2 - 8's are recognized as 4 - Sticks of 4 equalling 16 GB's. I've heard O'Connor say this on more than one occasion. Also, the difference in Ram denomination restricts a process called INTERLEAVING.

I bought additional 64gb ram to max it out and enclosure for my 4TB nvme stick. It's perfect for my workload. I had to stay with x86 as I need VMware Fusion/qemu for my work.
    That display is really, really awesome. I would not imagine how nice can font in iTerm2 look like :)
    The only (long term) problem with Apple is its politics. The UEFI firmware being stored on raid0/chips is biggest middle finger to customers yet. For that reason even my ~ is on external disk to minimize writes to that disk. It's a pity this model doesn't come with more TB ports too.
    One could argue that it's a bit louder too. When workload increases that fan is spinning like crazy. Sometimes even during YT videos (though less crazy then).

    Here is my take, IMHO. I recently purchased 2 used 2015 27" iMac's with 32GB RAM, 2GB GPU, internal TB SSD's (1TB and 2TB upgraded) , both for a total of $550 (in near new condition). Where else can you get 2 5K screens for that price. Granted, they are not as powerful as my Mac Studio M1 Max or my Mac Mini M1, but the video editing/photo editing I do, probably in line with 90% of most people don't require that much power from the newer M1/M2 systems. I recently rendered a pretty decent size video, the Mac Studio only rendered the 1080p video 5:35 minutes faster than the iMac. Let's see, Mac Studio M1 Max $1700 (Approx), Apple Studio Display (Approx) $1499 equal $3298, iMac $250, and what did it get me? A whole 5:35 faster render time. This is not rocket science, according to my calculations; it cost me $513 per minute (equipment performance) for the faster 5:35 render time? The older iMacs are worth it and more, IMHO. Oh, I forgot to mention that I used Open Core and upgraded both systems to Sonoma, and they run and perform with no problems at all. As mentioned earlier, they are not at the same performance level as the newer M1/M2 systems; however, they can do 90% or more of the work most use their systems for, it may take a few more minutes to render/photo edit. But what the heck, I'm sure the huge majority of users are not even close to using their systems in a professional way? Excellent video BTW.

      @craigneidel  Před 7 měsíci

      Nice post Eduardo. Yes, it comes down to the cost for sure. If you can get a 2020 iMac with a 5K screen for 1K it's a steal. You can upgrade the ram and then do 4K edits with no issues. I also use older iMacs (even a 2013) and those work great with 1080P edits for sure. So in the end most people can wait 5 minutes every week for a video to edit and should save the 3K. It's a no brainer but most channels tell people they need only the 3K machines but it's simply not true. If you can wait a few minutes these are great and the screen is the key.

The reason being the M3 has these efficiency cores that Logic Pro, and other music DAWs can´t read. Logic Pro X needs performance cores to run on. The efficiency cores are for graphics, and video. 2020 Imac 27" have soldered ssd's and are not upgradable. From Everymac- "This model has a 256 GB SSD. It is not upgradeable at the time of purchase or later."

      There's a way plus you can also boot off external SSD like with my 2017 iMac. That works great and is super responsive. Thanks for watching.

    I found the i7 version with 8gb ram, 512gb ssd for 1600$… It’s way pricier in Europe. For about the same price I can get the base model M3 iMac… I don’t know what to do 😂

    • @craigneidel
      @craigneidel  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Yes, for that price it's worth it to get the M3 most likely.

      @@craigneidel The only upsides I can think of is the 5K screen, the ability to install windows and maybe my thought process is wrong, but future proof wise, isn’t it better to be able to cheaply upgrade the ram of a 2020 iMac than be stuck with 8gb on the M3? Isn’t the biggest problem for future proofing a machine the modern ram requirements? I think the 10700K and the 5500 8gb ram can stand the test of time, 8gb of ram won’t.

    I bought the fully loaded i9, 5700XT w/ 2TB storage in 2020 adding 64gb Ram from OWC right before M1 was released, and I’m still glad I did.
    I also own a 2022 M1 Max 16” with 64gb memory and 2TB.
    Both work great.
    The M1 MacBook is snappier but not enough of a big, big difference though between the two.
    I use my iMac all the time for everything music & video.
    macOS Catalina, Monterey, Ventura & Sonoma.
    I boot off 4TB external drives (thunderbolt4 enclosures). Great performance.
    Runs just as fast as the internal.
    I love the 5K display.
    I agree with you about getting these 2020 27” iMacs . They are still great.
    Heck, I still use a 2013 21.5” iMac only because by switching out the HHD with an SSD (with a kit from OWC) brought it back to life.
    No, OpenCoreLegacyPatcher yet.
    But It still works great for my music.
    The only thing that bothers me is this,
    Can I upgrade the internal storage on my 2020 27” iMac?
    No, right?
    I thought they were soldered in also now like the M-Mac’s?
    Even the 2019’s. Right?
    I wish I put in an internal 4TB or 8 at purchase but using the Thunderbolt4 external enclosure’s are just fine.

      @craigneidel  Před 7 měsíci

      I think you can upgrade the internal storage but need a kit since the glass is sealed on. You have 2 nice machines for sure. Yes, the 2020's are great for just about anything and I actually boot off an external Drive on my 2017 (external SSD) and it works perfect too. I have been using that system for 5 years now with over 500 4K video edits and no issues. So the 2020's are even better.

    hi buddy, thanks for the video! i have this iMac and i love it, but im not sure about the speed of the USB-A ports. I've a QNAP TR-002 (czcams.com/video/llUGijVpuQA/video.html) that has a USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 (10GBps), if i conned this unit to my iMAC to one of the USB-A port, will i get less speed than if i connect it to a USB-C thunderbolt? thanks!

    • @craigneidel
      @craigneidel  Před 5 měsíci +1

      I don't think you will get the same speed if connected to a USB-A port as those are normaly 5 Gbps at best vs. the 10 Gbps USB-C connectiions.

    •  Před 5 měsíci

      THANKS @@craigneidel! so USB-A are usually 5Gbps! ohh that's why! in that case i will need to buy a USC-C to USB-C table to get those 10Gbps! i will try next week! thanks a lot! happy xmas!

    • @craigneidel
      @craigneidel  Před 5 měsíci +1

      They can be or less then 5 Gbps. The USB-C are usually 10 Gbps but they can also be 5 Gbps. Or if usb-c type but thunderbolt then 40 Gbps. Confusing but it should say.

    I saw that deal on Amazon this morning and pulled the trigger on it, $1069 is a nice deal and the savings will pay for the RAM. Sold by Woot who is owned by Amazon, less than 4:45 left on the deal at the time of this comment.
