    Apple has recently released their 2020 5K iMac and we've been using it for about a week now. We're really impressed by just how many new features are packed into this iMac, especially the ones we asked for.
    Things like Apple's T2 chip, an option for 10GB ethernet, a UHS-II SDXC card slot, 10th-Generation chips from Intel and Navi-based graphics cards.
    Because of these features, the performance and value of this iMac is through the roof, which is Apple's goal because they still want people to buy these Intel-based machines before they switch to Apple Silicon chips.
    However, we do have a couple of gripes with this iMac, which we discuss in this honest review.

      I see it more like a Porsche, whose line designs can stay still for many years barring minor changes if internals or special models require it.
      The “age” of the design doesn’t bother me at all as the usage is spot on and the 5K screen is something else (I also have a late 2013 iMac and that’s honestly the main drawback for me visually, the screen resolution... because as an everyday computer that 7yo device still flies under OSX).
      And just like it happens with some cars, a big redesign matched to change of cpu architecture is warranted but then afterwards I wouldn’t expect huge changes for many years on AS iMac (nor iPadPros for that matter for example).

    Your comments at 13:16 were spot on: if someone wants a 27" iMac and they need one now (for example, because they have an older machine and they're stuck with High Sierra, which is at or near EOL), they should just get one now. A 27" (or larger) silicon iMac sounds great, but that's a long ways off. And I was happy to see a slight improvement in performance/price compared with the 2019 model. So for someone who needs a new 27" iMac, this is a great time to buy.

    I got my high end iMac yesterday (was due on Monday) and overall I am a bit disappointed. I came from a 2016 MBP with 16gb Ram and no T2 chip, connected to a LG 42” 4K USB monitor. The step down to 27” isn’t the problem, but it really does feel like those bezels are gigantic. The iMac also creates a LOT of heat, far more than I expected. It does excel at video encoding/exporting, but the difference in regular performance is barely noticeable. It is a good value - I was just hoping it would be even better since it is the last Intel iMac. I honestly believe Apple is going to shock the industry when they drop the Intel CPUs - I really feel my 10-core 128GB system with the 5700 XT 16gb video is getting too hot for the level of performance it is putting out. And the bezels really are annoying - and I didn’t understand why people would say that until I spent hours sitting in front of a screen with these giant bezels. It gives the screen a feeling that you are not seeing it all - it is very noticeable when coming from a screen without large bezels.

      One of the advantages of Apple Silicon is that, being ARM-based, it will run significantly cooler. The industry is undergoing another of its cyclic flops between CISC and RISC. The 1980s, CPUs were CISC; then in the 90s, RISC was hot; then back to Intel CISCs in the 2000s, and now on to ARM, which is RISC again.

      luke williams Sure thing. French team at mac4ever.com did a thorough test btw i7 and i9 and it appears i7 wins in almost every compartment (Logic, FCPX...). Why is that ? Well, it seems that i9 is, on sustained word, dropping the GHz on each core to 1.6 GHz while the i7 is able to maintain 4 GHz all along. It is likely that the 10 cores struggles to cool down in time and so the perf are dropping. This is why I’m going to buy i7/7700XT and not i9/7700XT.

    As a Mac/iOS developer, and having tried the Apple Silicon developer kit, if you're looking to get a new MacBook, I suggest you wait. If you're shopping for a high end desktop (iMac Pro or Mac Pro), don't worry too much. Thermals and power consumption are way better. Macs suck at thermals, but the arm chips don't run as hot, and so actually perform way better since they aren't throttling.

      Apps will very quickly support apple silicon as long as they are relatively new. But any powerful apps will continue to support intel since most of our customers will be using iMacs or Mac pros, and Mac pros are not going to go apple silicon soon, those customers need the raw power. We will offer an intel version and an apple silicon one. Any low end software wont feel the difference between native intel and rosetta 2.
      so don't worry.

    Trust me, this iMac is still a beast. Yes it's not M1 Apple Silicon but for the price, you can get a really good 5k screen with FAST processing and you can add your own RAM easily. I added 64gb of ram and this iMac cuts like butter. And let's not forget dedicated GPU pretty much beats my M1 Pro in video rendering. Sure it gets hot, but man...this iMac is still amazing, but definitely don't pay that $2000ish price for it. If you find one with really good specs like i7 i9 5700xt for maybe $1200-$1500(in early 2023), go for it. Make sure you have insurance on it in case anything happens.
    But of course, if money doesn't matter, go M2 Ultra and Pro XDR Display lol.
    I just think this iMac is still a good deal considering there are many youtube videos talking about how it essentially competes against the M1 Max. It doesn't beat it, but it can go toe to toe with it.
    I hardly notice that much of a difference. But also the support of Intel macs. They'll probably still support Intel Macs for a while, I"ll give it until 2026ish.
    This has to be the best last Intel iMac, ever. Imagine if Apple continued AMD relationship, we'd get the 7900XTX on it lol.

    With some apps on iOS like Photos, TrueTone actually turns itself off automatically. I wonder if Mac OS does the same thing. Third Party apps will be less likely to do this though since it likely requires some tweaks behind the scenes.

    • @noonenooo2843

    • @casperes0912
      @casperes0912 Před 4 lety +1

      Hm. Not quite actually. It reduces the effect of TrueTone but it does not entirely disable it. There are several different adaptivity settings an app can pick from, but none of them are completely off, just various degrees of reduced effect.
      This API is sadly only available on iOS and currently not macOS, so any way of doing this on a Mac would be a hack essentially.

      Casper S just because the toggle for true tone is still enabled doesn’t necessarily mean it’s only ‘reducing the effect’. Don’t know if that’s what you’re referring to, but that would be confusing from a UX perspective. Seeing a user facing toggle be manipulated by software feels bad (Windows 10 actually does this on Surface devices with orientation lock, it’s mildly infuriating).

    Just thought I’d add my opinion on the iMac after having it for a couple of days now. It’s HUGE, seriously looks gigantic in my tiny NYC bedroom. The nanotexture screen is something that I’m really happy I spent the money on. It really reduces glare a lot! The only disappointment are the damn bezels. They look so wide in person. I hate it, especially coming from using a MBP and the iPad Pro which has much thinner bezels. Maybe I’ll eventually stop noticing the thick bezels over time. But if you can afford to wait until Apple changes the design, I would wait. Bc these bezels actually bother me 😅

    • @shane99ca
      @shane99ca Před 4 lety

      The bezels aren't likely to go anywhere; Apple has much bigger fish to fry right now. Use the computer in a darkened room and you won't even see them. And if you prefer your old monitor, why not hook the iMac up to it?

    • @MAYBEE90

    8-Core. 8GB but upgrade to 128GB. I may need Nano Texture, despite what you guys say. Glare could be problematic. But when you mention the Adobe programs on Silicon, I should wait. That's what I'm considering this iMac for: Heavy Adobe use. Photoshop, Lightroom, Illustrator, Premiere Pro, XD, etc...I run multiple design programs at a time and also web design. Thoughts? Especially with services like backblaze and time machine (local backup, remote off site backup) not having a backup these days is just plain stupid.
      I lke Louis a lot, but he isn't exactly unbiased, especially with the data recovery.

      @@DocNo27 Sir you have a great habit and I commend you for it. But the majority of the market for the imac will not do it (maybe for the imac pro customers might but the userbase of the imac won't). So I think then the manufacturer owes it to the consumer to at least create a product where if the worst happens then the consumer shouldn't be fucked.
      Hell yeah louis is biased. He also advocates for macs when people just need no hassle to audio producers etc. But when you see people who can barely afford rent being forced to shell out a 1000$ then I think anyone can be biased.
