    Why is nobody talking about the fact that the baseline model costs 2629 and the cheapest 5K monitor you can buy is 2499? That's an extremely good bang for your buck if you ask me...
    Also, I don't see why a video like this is useful. Everyone who knows how to build a hackintosh knows that it will be more powerful. For other users who don't know how to build one, this video isn't helpful anyway. So I don't see who could use a video like this. This just seems like a video to bash apple. He's talking 2 minutes about how decent the dell monitor is, didn't even take 5 secs to talk about the 5K display, total bias if you ask me...

    • @uneexperienceuneperception2448
      @uneexperienceuneperception2448 Před 9 lety

      good analysis. It does look bias concerning the screen and the hardware as well.

    • @jaimeduncan6167
      @jaimeduncan6167 Před 9 lety +1

      The 5K dell monitor is a wide gamut monitor, so it will not be fair to match it with the iMAC. But even if we cut the price of the Dell monitor in half the mac is still less expensive. What the HK buys you is easy to upgrade and fine-tune. It will use far more power (electric bills) but you can change components super easy. The report is biased? yes mostly. Math can show that it is. See my reply to Haniff Din, but it's what it is.

  • @Zyocuh
    @Zyocuh Před 9 lety +28

    is there any reason you didn't want to use the 5k dell monitor for a more fair comparison? or is it because a 5k monitor stand alone costs almost as much as the 5k imac so you would not be able to say you are getting a better buy. The reason you choose 5k over 4 is so when you are editing 5k content you can see all of the video plus the editing software

    @Radcaster Před 8 lety +1

    One thing people seem to be discounting in the comments is the actual quality of the two screens here.
    I work in a computer store and have always been a PC nerd, but the screens used in the iMacs are FLAWLESS. I've been testing the 5k iMac against everything we have - 4k TVs, monitors, etc - the iMac stomps all the competition in clarity and colour.
    A $400 4k monitor with very mixed reviews is not a fair comparison. In fact, I challenge anyone to find a screen as good as the one on the iMac for under $1000. When you consider that, I have a hard time understanding how people can say these new iMacs are overpriced.

    • @jojag5
      @jojag5 Před 8 lety

      Yes, they have beautiful displays, nobody denies that. The problem is that the specs of the actual machine are no where near as good as a PC of the same price. In fact, I could make a hackintosh with better specs than the best possible iMac (which is $4100 USD) for around $2000, then get a high quality 4k monitor and save myself $1000. Hell, I could buy a 27'' iMac to use as my monitor and still save money.

    I have a Hackintosh and a 4k monitor, but I have a problem. At that resolution everything is very very small (I know you can make things bigger, but not everything). That doesn't happen with Apple's Retina Display, so I guess theres's a special kind of OS for that? How did you manage to solve this problem? What system definition have you set? (iMac 5.1?) Polarizing to say the least. The minimum hardware specs that I would like to have would set me back $3.7K, in the PC world that could buy me quite a bit of kit (hardware wise) and 2x4K monitors. I don't care much for how beautiful the iMac is and it is beautiful; that would be lost in the clutter of paperork and accessories littered around my desk within a week anyway. My personal take away from this video is that Hackintosh can run halfway decent gfx card. Dual Boot with a windows-box for gaming and no one loses out. My only concern is that hackintosh might not support SLI/crossfire. and driving 2x4K panels at 60Hz (in a gaming environment) is probably beyond what a single gfx can do.

    I don't get why you didn't do this "vs" with machines that are as closely matched as possible. An i5 will never beat an i7 (same gen) no matter how overclocked it is. And having 16GB vs 8GB of RAM is definitely a head scratcher as well. There's no real basis here and all non-Mac people are going to see is "Yeah Mac's suck. This proves it!".

      you have to compare them in term of cost or in term of specification,
      in term of cost, this hackintosh cost them less than 2000$ with better result than the iMac which cost 500$ more.
      so what do you think if he compare it with the same specification? it would be a lot cheaper than you expected.

    • @HarshKalra490
      @HarshKalra490 Před 5 lety

      Ahmad Ataya the iMac here was barely outperformed by the hackintosh(considering it has double the threads, double the ram and less pixel to push through to screen). A similar specd hackintosh might be cheaper but may not fare well in terms of performance.

      Kind of a different ordeal in that respect.

    This is not a fair comparison by any standard. I myself currently have a dual-boot hackintosh. If you had compared the same or very similar specifications the results would have undoubtedly been better on the iMac

    small problem is how fast hardware changes.esp in the pc world. Now youd use a 9000 series video card, sam sung has a 32 inch 4k monitor for 500 and even slightly faster ssd drives. But still I like the video and how you compared them.

    Also, go under the Apple on your Hackintosh and run a software update on the main OS.... doesn't usually work so smoothly without some fucking around, not ideal for a production environment.

    this comparison is very fair, we pay money for performance. before i make my own opinion, i use macbook pro retina 13, used to have 15 as well, but sold it, too slow for my line of work.(i got them both for free.)
    here is what i would put together, if i would like to make hackintosh
    4790k
    Gigabyte GA-Z97N-WIFI Mini ITX
    G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-2133 Memory
    Asus GeForce GTX Titan Black 6GB Video Card
    2x Samsung 840 Pro Series 128GB raid0
    Seagate Barracuda 3TB 3.5" 7200RPM
    Asus PB287Q 60Hz 28.0" Monitor
    Corsair 250D Mini ITX Tower Case
    =Total: $2606.88
    (this is by pcpartpicker)
    so this is same price as base imac 5k and it would destroy it in every task.
    there is no point getting 5k display, firstly there is no content in 5k and there is no single gpu that can handle even 4k properly.
    @MW Technology really good video buddy! You should try to build x99 platform and compare that to mac pro, so that apple fanboys can cry again :d

    I have a similarly configured Hackintosh and several "real" mac laptops. I would say there are two big issues that someone interested in going the hackintosh route should consider. Yes the hassle of building it is an obvious one, you will spend hours and possibly days ironing out a solid configuration and OS install. From my perspective it is an expert-level PC build, as PC components work with Windows right away (+Drivers) for the most part. It is much much more involved than building a PC, especially if you want to dual or triple boot and use RAID drives or multiple graphics cards. Be prepared to learn a lot. The second major issue is support. While there are several fantastic communities to learn from and seek out wisdom, there is no official support for anything hackintosh related. When your graphics card isn't fully functioning, you can't take it to the Genius Bar, and you can't call nvidia for support, both will say we don't support our product with that software/hardware. If you are in a production environment, where the computer(s) you use make you your money, I would highly recommend sticking with a real Mac for the support, warrantee, and reliability. UNLESS, you are extremely savvy and the idea of tinkering excited you, then go for it, maybe have a backup real mac for worst case breakdown scenario.

    It does sounds like if you put same quality of 5K monitor, the price will be quite close.
    In addition, for system stability native OSX is a lot stable than Hackintosh which is illegal as well. The time and effort to make all parts compatible and solving a lot of kernel panic will cost more than the money you saved.

    6:03-6:11 It is not true that you cannot get these speeds on hackintoshs, you can get PCIe SSDs on the retail market (some of them have well over 2 GB/s).
    12:13 Macs are still expensive, but not expensive as they were before, 500$ price difference is less than the differences where a few years ago.

    Good intentions here.. but would've liked to see at least 16gb in the imac. It's not much to upgrade to that?
    You can't compare the prices given the screen is quite a bit better.. 5k screens are probably over-priced right now though ($2.5k for Dell 5k) so hard to estimate the cost in one year..

    It would be a much more fair comparison to do I7 vs I7, the upgraded video, and 16 Gig Ram vs 16 Gig ram. This was comparing "Apples" Vs Oranges so to speak. Not really a good comparison but thanks for the time. I think it shows an upgraded iMac to match would have equaled or done better than the Hackintosh.

    The only problem with a Hackintosh vs the real thing is the setup, it can be a real pain in the ass. I'm working on one right now, and it works beautifully but if I wanted to upgrade to Yosemite it would take several hours and a whole lot of rum. I have a 4gb nvidia graphics card but it's limited unlike it would be on a pc. I'm going to save up and just buy a real mac, this 5k one looks like the one to buy. I'll this machine as a gaming rig, which was the original reason I built it, and my future mac for everything else.

    I just purchased a 5K iMac. I've had it since October 30th and have been fairly impressed. I went with the i7 and the R9 295x upgrade because I didn't want to be hobbled by the slower processor and graphics card of the i5 and R9 290. However, while it's nice, I've been thinking about returning it to Apple and building a Hackintosh instead. It's just something that I've always wanted to do, and the thought of saving money and getting a more powerful machine in the process is very alluring (I realize I won't be getting 5K, but there are some very nice 4K monitors out there right now).
    I do have a few questions though: 1. Is it possible to build a Hackintosh and still have handoff capabilities? I've read that I may need a wifi adapter. Are there any mother boards that have out of the box Bluetooth and wifi capability that is compliant with Yosemite? 2. Are there any features of the OS X that I would lose by building a Hack instead of sticking with my 5K mac? 3. As I also have a Macbook Pro Retina, should I just build a great PC system, and just plug my Macbook Pro into my monitor when I want to stay with OS X?
    Thanks again for the comparison and information. I've been going back on forth on what to do. I have about 8 more days to make a decision before it will be too late to return the mac back to Apple - and I'm really stuck...

      @altamimik93 Před 9 lety +1

      A few things to note about this. I currently have a hackintosh and also a Macbook Pro Retina.
      Wifi is iffy even with the best adapters. I have tried a bunch.
      Same with bluetooth (may or not be important to you) also tried a few
      Warranty is annoying with a built computer because you're going to have to take it apart.
      Software is also quite frustrating at times. An example of this is when I update I have to reinstall the kext for sound ever single time.
      I have had 3 hackintoshes so far and currently with an i7, Nvidia GTX 660 (i don't do gaming)
      If you plan to overclock it might not like that. There's a lot to go wrong with it software wise. You have to do a lot of research in order to get it right on.
      I will be getting an iMac with retina as soon as my current hackintosh dies. (since the last update it won't go to sleep properly)
      If you do gaming go with building a desktop like you were thinking about. It will be cheaper and no headache if you stick with windows
      If you want a computer that works without issue generally and have a clean desk space go with the iMac and stick with it.

    • @tikishark1
      @tikishark1 Před 9 lety +1

      Wow! It seems like a major hassle. I have a lot to think about. I do like to game as well as work on my desktop to write lessons for my classroom. The iMac so far has done okay at gaming (I'm playing Tomb Raider at a 4K setting with everything turned up and getting 27 FPS - 40 if I drop down to 3K). With word processing the 5K is a very nice screen to write on (I assume that would be the same on a hackintosh).
      I guess I'll have to weigh the pros and cons and then make a decision. My biggest fear is being stuck with a 5K first generation iMac that will have outdated hardware in 6 months. But I also want something that consistently works. Heck - at this point I may just return the Mac, not build a hackintosh and just run windows on a desktop. Too many decisions ; )
      I really appreciate your advice.

      that is a R9 295xm not a R9 295x LOL

    • @tikishark1
      @tikishark1 Před 9 lety +1

      Well I went ahead and returned my iMac. I was starting to get some very yellowish and sepia tones colors on the screen. I also ran into a problem where the middle portion of the monitor would flicker non stop. This eventually went away, but I knew something just wasn't right. Not to say that all of the 5k's are like this, just the one I had.
      Decided to buy another iMac, but then cancelled my order.
      I'm going to try and build my own desktop after all. Maybe even try a hackintosh. I've already ordered (and have received) some of the parts. I went with the Asus 4K monitor. An i7 4790K CPU, two Gigabyte GTX 970 GPU's (which are on back order), a gigabyte motherboard, evga 850 PSU, some corsair ram, nzxt H440 case, a 256 Samsung SSD, and a 3TB Black HD. Even with a keyboard and mouse, I'm under the cost of a new 5K imac.
      However, there are some things that make me wonder if I made a good choice. 1. The monitor is not as good as the imac. The resolution is there, but not the color - it's washed out and only 4K. Also when the monitor is plugged into my MacBook Pro retina, the text is tiny. If I make it larger its jagged. 2. It is very cluttered with all the parts - lots of cords.
      The good however - I'll get awesome performance. I can tinker with it (which can be fun), and if I need to upgrade, I will always have that option (I know better screens are on the horizon).
      I'll have to let you know if I made the right decision when the build is done.
