I had a poster on the wall of this car as a boy... it was like a 308 Magnum PI car but with huge muscles, front fog lights, sexy back end with the gearbox visible, vent strakes, and massive power. Screw the F40: this was the best looking 1980s Ferrari. And it is so damned rare as well

@@paulthomson9014 Over hyped possibly. The prices have a lot to do with rarity and heritage. While the 288 GTO is somewhat reminiscent of the 308 GTB, the fact that they reengineered it to be longitudinal, added the turbo, and the hints of the 250 GTO. To my eyes, the additional length gives it the perfect proportions. It is beautiful in the best Pininfarina fashion, far eclipsing the F40, F50, F60, Enzo, and LaFerrari in my opinion.

Hands down my favourite Ferrari of all and this one is about as beautiful as they get! - And although I am firmly middle aged, I have never even seen one in the flesh :-(
I always thought that the Magnum PI era of the 308 was a keystone chapter of Ferrari; every subsequent model since has borrowed a little from the 308 and despite the spaceship flavour of the design language of todays models, I bet you can still see something of the 308 in them. The 288 was obviously a 308 on steroids, augmented with supercar performance; a legend and an absolutely gorgeous piece of automotive art.

you mentioned Wide World of Cars(Nanuet?). In the mid 70s I intended to drive to Grossman Motors to see a 72(one owner) Ghibli Coupe. I got lost somewhere in Nyack and found myself in the parking lot of a garage repair shop. I asked a guy if he would give me directions to Grossman's and he said if could wait a minute, he was headed that way. Grateful as hell I chatted with him. He got into a Gold colored Miura SV and we set off. By the time we got there 5/6 minutes? I was in love but not with the Maser. The understanding Joe Namnoun said.."you're a little mixed up now" take a drive and just come back Monday. I drove down the road to WW of C and BINGO ! Right there in their lot was a Agrento and Crema Daytona Spyder......By this time i had broken up with the Miura and my new love of the Ferrari! Thank you for the memory John. Tony Davis

This car is reminiscent of the 308 which the Magnum PI series popularized, but of course the 288 GTO was worlds worlds above the other. I'm envious that you're driving that car pan is great

I remember back in the mid 90's and early 2000's most of the Ferrari's and Lamborghini's from the late 70's and 80's we're actually affordable.
