No other car ever made makes me feel like this does when I see it. The flared fenders and tight interior, the exposed rear final drive, the hyper turbo power....It's definitely more sexy than the F40. And what a super nice guy to be the Ferrari ambassador.

Many years ago I saw a GTO cruising around in a neighboring town. Clean, glossy, bright red finish, with immaculate rims, appeared as if it had just been detailed. It was driving slowly. So low to the ground, it looked like it was gliding just above the surface of the street. I followed him for about a mile or two before turning away. IMHO the 288 GTO is hands down, the best looking Ferrari of all time. I believe it is matched only by the Miura SV for the most beautiful car ever!

6000 miles on a car of that vintage... A friend of mine had a 67 mustang. One of only 500 built to qualify for racing. It had super low mileage, but there was a story behind it. The original owner (vietnam fighter pilot) drove it, and raced it all the way to California for deployment. He said he was only beaten by a 427 side oiler vette. He sold it to get married, buy a house after coming stateside. Second owner LOVED the idea of the car but only drove it a couple of times. It honestly scared him. He stored it well for decades. I have to agree with you Ryan. That profile photo in Jay's Garage, with the overhead lighting is just spectacular! The F40 which was released just a couple of years later has gotten huge acknowledgement, and justifiably so, for its phenomenal stat-sheet and its performance has over-shadowed the 288 GTO to some degree. One of the biggest differences is though, that the GTO has all that performance and is still a comfortable road-going car. The F40 makes no apologies. It is a stripped down gunfighter! Nothing more. Nothing less. It has minimal accouterments but gobs of performance.
The 288 GTO (2.8 liters / 8 cylinders - that was the code then, engine displacement & number of cylinders) looked to me, like what the 308 GTB should have been. It was just "right" in all its proportions and had the performance to back it up. 400 hp will do that for you! I still have photographs of one that we had in a shop I worked in, in the early '90s. It was graceful, superbly muscular, and made everything else in the shop look just a bit "plain." That was among other Ferraris, Maseratis, Porsches, Jags and Mercedes. Even among the other Ferraris, it was in a class of its own.

In my 40s now, and there is not a car that hits me so hard from a nostalgia standpoint. I leap back to when I was 10, building this Testors model car in my bedroom. At that age, being able to put your hands on the most beautiful and original car of the time…it set me up to love cars for the rest of my life.
I don’t think there will ever be a car made whose shapes, proportions, stance and emotional tension just ooze out of it. Undeniable, powerful art.

Jay mentioned how the F40 felt analog, but this felt even more so. And it looks.. sexy. It's got the rounded elements that remind me of 60s muscle-cars, with that whole Coke-bottle shape. The F40 looks like a purpose-built race-car, which is its own style, but you can tell it was made with the future in mind, with the slab sides, rectangular wing and just general hard-edged features.
And the profile still looks amazing to me, with that duck-tail rear spoiler.

So it’s easy to see great cars. Legend says there’s a 288 GTO here. Have never seen it. Most others appear. The Ferrari Museum has a big GTO display, with a total of one of them. Rare indeed. In 1985 Clark Simpkins Ferrari was selling a few. $125,000 Can bucks each. Yes I could have grabbed two! Dad and me discussed it, plenty of safe storage on our farm, etc. He was stuck in the sensible nono save your money, who knows when there’s another disaster.

Jay should treat the socks like a classic Ferrari; not use them too much so that they'll increase in value.

Jay: "But you know it's amazing how any older supercar can't hold a candle to modern stuff. I mean it's just amazing to me when I get in some of the modern cars, like the new Ferraris, like the new McLarens, it's like jet planes and propeller planes. I mean it's not even close. I mean who would have thought that 1,000 horsepower you could get on the street." And there in lies the crux - it's still the street, with speed limits that don't affect your pulse because you exceed them in first gear and low revs. I'd rather drive something like this 288 GTO (or even plenty less exotic) where you can really feel it, drive it, enjoy it at lower speeds.
This was my poster car as a kid in the '80s. So beautiful, and relatively stealth* given its passing resemblance to the 308/328s of the day. (Okay, it would turn heads, but would not scream the supercar that it was).
