I was an obedient child once in a heavily catholic home and people say when I was I seemed happier, but the thing is when you’re forced to appear a certain way in front of everyone all the time that typically entails not expressing much emotion. Me not speaking out about the abuse and depression I felt didn’t mean it wasn’t there. I might seem less happy now to people with an outside perspective, but I’m happier now expressing my feelings and being honest with myself rather than locking everything away. I actually have the will to do better and create a future for myself, whereas before I felt like my life was over before it started and I didn’t have any hope at all.

@@uncannedspaghetti one of the things that really aided me on my recovery after an abusive relationship that framed my parents' actions in a new light to me was the jenny holzer "truism" "IF YOU WERE A GOOD CHILD WITH FAIR PARENTS, YOU WOULD FREEZE IN YOUR TRACKS, GO LIMP, AND TAKE A DESERVED BEATING.
A HOLDOVER FROM THIS MIGHT HAVE YOU SUBMIT TO REAL DANGER,
      BELIEVING THAT SOMEONE IS

something about holzer's truism series is that a lot of the phrases have intentionally ambiguous meanings. the idea of "fair parents" & "deserved beating" i think is appropriate to say here bc it's the framing of the pov of the abused child and/or abusive parents & it's directly called into question in the second part of the truism

I absolutely do not compliment my children for being “obedient”, but I do thank them for being kind , understanding, compassionate and listening to others.
It is only natural that kids grow and want to rebel. What parents need to understand is the importance of communication and trust. A child who respects their parents will always want to make them proud. People need to make mistakes, learn and grow and also build their own independence. Being “obedient”, does none of those things. What it does is make adolescents very depressed, never learn to set healthy boundaries and as well as low self esteem, good liars and manipulative.

My dad thought my crying was annoying as a child so he hit me so I "had a real reason to cry" and got angrier if I cried loudly. Now as an adult I am extremely conflict avoidant and anti confrontational. If someone raises their voice at me then my eyes get teary by reflex and I flinch at sudden movements. I will never be comfortable around "bear" type men who are too much bigger than me and that includes my dad. I would never trust him with my doubts and feelings ever and I am incapable of speaking once I start crying. I mean that literally. I just physically can't. It's like I become temporarily mute and how long it takes me to be able to speak after depends on how emotional I was. It could take hours. If I try to talk I just wheeze and if it's particularly bad I hyperventilate. If I make crying sounds I instinctively put pressure on my throat or else I'll just panic and potentially spiral.

My parents did their best, yes, but that doesn't mean they did enough. That doesn't make me any less traumatized, any less neglected. It wasn't their fault, but it still happened. I was an obedient kid in a Christian home cause if I showed any emotion or disapproval my parents would threaten to send me away or yell at me. I became a push over to avoid conflict and anytime I tried to push back it would end in a fight no matter how small the situation. I got diagnosed with depression when I was in grade 9 and when I told my parents I was sat on the couch and yelled at for an hour about how ungrateful I was and how I AM happy but I’m just possessed (wish I was joking) so I feel like kids aren’t more obedient it’s just that emotional abuse is now more common than physical abuse. Not saying either is better but they really fuck up a kids life.

I think that it has been known before the invasion that theres neo nazis there ( the "national militia" comes to mind which has been discussed years before this). Im not quite sure that it was condemning all of Ukraines people of being nazis hence why the group condemned the invasion. Putin just took known info and warped it into a justification for his awful actions, especially cause those groups from the Azov movement have been openly against russian separatists. If it wasnt Nazis, Putin would have found any justification to enact his plans that Im quite sure he has been brewing over since his time in the Kremlin.

@UCxSt5DggTOHV8XhTphsByjg they made a video justifying Russia’s aggression by arguing that US and NATO was funding neonazis in Ukraine. They changed the title when the invasion happened days later and ultimately deleted it. Adam Something (a leftist youtuber who mostly makes videos on the flaws in infrastructure and transportation systems, as well as the Ukraine crisis in Donbas before it became an invasion) did a video breaking their’s down. It’s called “How the Gravel Institute lies to you”. I wanna preface it by saying he’s a leftist so it doesn’t come off as some centrist or far right clickbait.

So if you see cops grouped like that, just hanging out, that means there is no threat. If you do see them spread out that means they either got a call or threats were made. So no toes sucked but they also aren't bullying anyone.

I think that really just reaffirms his point. Cops, generally, are a clean up crew. If bad shit isn't actively going on or if it hasn't already happened, they'll sit around waiting for it rather than actively preventing those bad things from happening.
Obviously this situation was pretty lax so it isn't that big of a deal, but it is indicative of a bigger problem imo

Bingo. I was a teen during the 90s, even then mental health was still pretty taboo. What was even more taboo, though, was PARENTS making their kids suffer with mental illness. Everyone acted as if parents were these perfect beings, the only bad parents were those that ruthlessly beat their children to a pulp. And I’m talking a hardcore beating, like end up in the hospital kind of beating. It was still very normalized for parents to hit their children if they were “out of line.”

6:09 I live in a Canadian city with a food truck fest & about a bajillion other festivals & I can attest that the only thing I've ever seen cops do at festivals --- other than socialize & also you wouldn't believe the "free samples" they get when food's involved --- is hassle people who are without housing who are rarely bothering anyone, but just having a good time enjoying the free entertainment, which obviously isn't allowed if you're poor or mentally ill or esp if you are FN. Even before covid I started avoiding these free city festivals bc I witnessed police hassling people without any point or necessity so much I almost never could enjoy them. & complaining or intervening made it worse; & subsequent reports/complaits to higher-ups went unaddressed.
