@@mariaquiet6211 Exactly. Shock humor being badly misused is usually what they're going for and it's not funny. Dark humor is hard to do because it's easy to fuck up and end up genuinely hurting people. Shock humor is even harder to properly do because it easily devolves into just being a fucking asshole. Shock humor doesn't have nearly as much of the necessary structure of most humor, and dark humor in particularly needs a lot of the structure to not be offensive or cruel. Shock humor is a subset of dark humor, so by proxy it is extremely difficult to get right. And when you get it wrong, you better fucking own up to it, not just this "sorry you're oFfEnDeD" bullshit.

  •  Před 2 lety +9529

His problem is he has a complete misunderstanding of what 'dark humour' actually is, and how comedians are able to use it well to challenge an audience. It's not punching down. And a good indicator of whether you're doing it well or not are the audience you're attracting. If they're all in your comments saying this was "jokes", they're all British school boys, and that is not a good sign.

    • @choclatchipcookie
      @choclatchipcookie Před 2 lety +262

imo it's not necessarily misunderstanding the definition, just using it as a codeword to find other fascists. the "humor" part just gives them an excuse for when someone calls them out on it. they're hella racist/transphobic etc. but. don't have the balls to explain why they have the opinions they do so they just go "haha jesus calm down, it was just a joke" when it was obviously pretty serious.
i matched with a guy on tinder once that had dark humor in his profile. he was like so you like racist jokes? I'm just wrapping up a quarter in college all about studying humor. Time and time again it was stated to effectively create dark humor, you must punch up. Dark humor is never to harass someone, but to either share your own experiences, or to punch up. They use dark humor as a mask to voice their real thoughts, it's as simple as that. This isn't humor, it's bigotry presented in a laughing form.

To preface, I’m 14 and I live in Norway.
I’ve started noticing how outwardly fucked the boys of my generation is. Here’s some stuff I’ve seen them do over the past two years (unless stated otherwise):
Asking a teacher if “well if humans used to all be black doesn’t that mean I can say the n-word?” (From the whitest guy in class)
Asked a poc guy in class if he could say the n-word.
Making a fun of a kid who couldn’t speak right in front of him.
Asking that same kid questions about his language (he’s Asian) and doing racist stereotypes in front of him.
Saying the Norwegian F-slur and the English one.
Throwing a snowball right in my friend’s lunch and one right in her face.
Going up to my friend, calling her fat, laughing about it, then walking away.
Saying stuff like “you aren’t gay right” and “dude that’s so SUS/Gay” (sometimes despite the somber faces on the people they’re saying it to)
Cheating on their girlfriend (usually tricking other girls to)
    Pressuring relationship boundaries
Non consensual touching (this has lasted since about 6th grade)
Once in 4th or 5th grade a guy ran into the girls locker and pulled my towel off, then ran out. (Shows this behaviour starts young)
Almost all of these things were done with teachers in ear range or eye sight. Usually with a teacher in the room. Despite this none of the guys have ever faced any type of punishment. It does not stop at jokes. It never stops at “just jokes”. Content creators with a younger fan base need to stop ingraining these things and making them sound acceptable. We cannot keep normalising this behaviour.
Because this type of behaviour ages like fine wine. It never stop until it’s called out.

it's so easy to fall into that edgy humour pipeline and come out of it a right-leaning bigot. anyone who doesn't believe they could fall victim to it and it's dangers are among those most vulnerable to it. i was a nonbinary bisexual person before i was sucked into that pipeline, and when i finally broke out of it i reidentified as such. EVERYONE is vulnerable to it because it is such a pervasive thing. it's pure pipeline propaganda, that whole 'dark humour' bullshit is so prevalent online, especially in gaming communities which is where i mostly grew up online. it's grooming and it's brainwashing and you're ignorant and unknowing of the damage you're doing and it's some of the worst stuff i think i've ever done and breaking out of that conditioning was the most healing and liberating thing i've done. the damage that's been done to people in the pipeline and the victims of the pipeline can't be undone, but educating people about it, how easy it is to get sucked in, how to avoid it and how to spot it is extremely extremely important especially in the political climate of 2022.
