Love the coverage of other motorsports that arent f1, opening up the minds of the motorsport community to other racing is always good
Racing in general is good, shopping carts or Formula 1. Tractor im in, truck im in no matter what its cool!
@@xoriatmike6857I'll even take a couple of Model T's.
Same, I grew up with F1 but it’s now probably my least favourite series relatively speaking, there’s so much out there
Touring car drivers never seemed to get the hang of bump drafting, they tended to wait until the breaking zone to put it into action
Ah the good old bump and run
It’s the true “push to pass”
Loving the varied topics Scott! I’ve long been struggling to find a coherent way to explain dumping and its legality to my non F1 friends. If you for some reason need a new entry into this series adjacent to this & a bit of a darker more nuanced spin off, please beat me to the punch id love to see a bigger brain tackle that
You’re a legend, been loving your content for years ❤
Absolutely love your content! Hoping to see more videos soon :)
6:51 due to the prevalence of tandem bump drafting, in 2011, NASCAR made some changes to the front end of the NASCAR Cup Series cars (then in the 5th generation of vehicle) to increase the temperature rise of the water, forcing cars to back off to cool down several degrees. I think the changes were to the size of the duct leading to the radiator, going down in size.
Joey Logano is quite infamous for his AGGRESSIVE pushes at Super Speedway races, as he had caused a few incidents in the past, but he is very good at the style, having won the Daytona 500 a few years ago.
If you want to see this to the extreme check out Nascar tandem drafting from around 2009-2011.
Drafting on steroids
That was 1st thing got in mind after seeing start of video!
2008 - 2009 was the best Drafting ever at Daytona b4 the repave and Talladega before its repave in 08. Drivers were bouncing around so much in the corners that they had to be smart when to push
Damn I read drifting instead of drafting and thought "wow this is rad"
It's funny how this informational video about motorracing can also be used as a promotion for trains as a form of transport.
Something to remember too is that in nascar, some cars are better pushers than leaders. Some people struggle with their car getting too loose when leading the pack whereas someone else could be getting tight . Super speedway racing is a 180mph chess match oh processing where you can develop a run to pass the lane next to you, managing risk to save your equipment for the end and knowing where your cars setup is after hours of racing.
lol people need to stop comparing everything to chess
Bumpdrafting!
Quite obvious why it doesn't happen in Formula 1, no? Those front wings are so fragile.
Yeah, but also the fact that the front wing is mutch lower than on for example the F3 car shown in the video.
yes and no. just as we've also learned from this video, it's not necessary to make physical contact in other to profit from this. the car in from can go faster by not being held back by the same low pressure zone behind because the following car changes a lot in terms of aerodynamics (yes, affecting the leading car.)
fragility plays a reason but Formula One cars aren't spec cars, so they just don't behave the same.
that's why the only reasonable attempt to this can be made by team mates which is what we've seen in the past during qualifying.
it's also worth noticing that they drive on circuits that frequently involve either heavy breaking or high speed turns; in both cases, the loss in downforce is detrimental.
@@HxTurtle I think you are confusing bumpdrafting with normal drafting
@@eliascregard396 no, I don't think so.
normal drafting only helps the guy behind and has an effect of several car lengths.
bump drafting helps the guy in front as well and requires them to be really close
normal drafting is to reduce the gap on a straight and ultimately ends in an overtake move (or attempt.)
whereas for bump drafting, this isn't the actual intend. it's to gain an combined advantage (the video explained it quite well where he said, "think about the same frontal area, but twice or even more the engine power.") what I wanna add to this, as it wasn't too prominent in this video, is that physical contact isn't required for this effect to kick in. hence, "bump drafting" (where the guy in front also gets an advantage) is theoretically possible in Formula One as well. (yes, the example I pointed out, that it was trialed several times in qualifying [cf., Ferrari at Monza] is a poor one. yes, the beneficiary car was behind in this case, which isn't enough to deem it as regular drafting, but the gap was too large for the leading car to gain an advantage so yes; that indeed doesn't count.])
The bump drafting in mx-5 cup is a lot of fun to watch too
Nascar cars bump drafting, perfectly normal, seeing any open wheel car bump drafting, now that’s something you don’t see everyday
We see some drivers do bump drafting in F1 usually don’t we ☠️😂
Thanks for these vidoes Scott, they've really helped my driving game! Cheers🍻
Great information for drafting and understanding slipstreams. 👍
i love going thru these vids and noticing my local tracks saw atlanta motorsports park karting circuit in there and a road atlanta clip
It’s interesting to see that bump drafting/Tandem drafting is possible in single seater cars. I figured the strategy was only possible in NASCAR
It feels like there's an overdrive video in here somewhere! Would be great to see you guys doing this or giving it a go in a race
Thanks for sharing.
Fantastic in detailed description
I love these educational videos man.
Please say you’ll do the 25 hours of spa funcup race with Overdrive, it would make for some pretty entertaining content.
Formula one has the most delicate cars. I don’t think bump drafting is an option for them😂
Wow I didn't expect to see a clip from the KCR track in Québec at 4:04
7:25 lol the game says "you deserve that win"
Surely a vid on why SVG is so good as he just won Bathurst again
Bump drafting in Spec Miata is systemic.
"He's just giving him a little bump grip"
Bumb drafting actually isn't illegal in NASCAR, locking bumpers is. In 2010 and for several years after they discovered they could stay connected for the entire lap or two, then swap positions as the push car overheated to continue on pushing. The racing was basically 20 groups of 2 car tandems driving to the front then falling back during the switch & driving back to rhe front. The 2011 Daytona 500 is a great example of this.
really love the nascar inclusion in these videos! as a lifelong fan, and as someone that's driven those things on the sim the past 3 years, i can tell you it can be beneficial but one wrong misjudgement and the entire field dies. i've done it before and it's not fun to set off 😓
seeing it in open-wheel is both really cool and definitely more sketchy. it would be really nice to see someone try it carefully in f1 sometime simply for the ridiculous nature & feasibility but i don't think toto wolff or red bull would be happy cashing in checks for damage 🤭
Missed Opportunity to talk about the 2007 Daytona 500 finish. Harvick used "side-draft" to win.
you video ending is always quite the fun moment 😂
Very interesting strategy 😊
I wouldn't have been terribly disappointed if he didn't put in that Talledega Nights reference.
Could you make a video about Lance Strolls driving style?
In his onboards it is apparent that he drives different compared to all the other drivers.
Very choppy steering inputs, and i wonder if it is fast?
I drive like that in my sims...... and i'm not really fast with it... lol
There are calculatings, that with autonomous cars, they could form these draft trains an highways to save fuel.
Any advice on visibility during this? Especially on starts behind several cars in line
3:54 that’s me from a long time ago lol
Bump drafting is not only faster, but it’s fun as well! 🙂
Rubbin is racing feller 😂
This is quite crazy, because I saw this only being done in games and I thought no one would do this in real life.
Bumping a car too fast before a corner braking zone seems like a legit tactic at NASCAR road courses.
Bump Bump Bump!
Bro is just talking bout shake and bake
Scott, great video but missing spec miata content!
Please do a video on what blue flags actually mean in motorsport from Karting upwards and why F1 is different (and prissy) about them. I am tired of sim racers who think a blue flag is a passport to pass because they only watch F1.
Bump drafting my beloved. As a NASCAR enthusiast it's a common sight and it's beautiful
The miata cam was just cute lol
Spec Miata is all about the bump draft!
I understand this could be too much to ask, however, can you give an explaination on what's happening with Lance Stroll (same as the one for Sergio Perez)?
1st thumbnail was better ❤
Carlos, "YOU ARE STEALING MY TRICK!".
I will say for nascar you can actually still bump draft, just you can't lock bumpers
Shake n Bake!
Shake and bake baby!
Interesting. I didn't know the low pressure air from the back sucks the car back creating drag.
How does betterhelp still exisit after all the scandals. Crazy.
What happened?
SHAKE N BAKE
F1 drivers generally don't like following too closely because it overheats their tyres and engines.
it applies fot every racing category, v8 supercars for example also complain about over heating
Bump drafting baybeh
3:50 all rental karts with no speed. So you don’t see it in racing kart championships..kz etc
Is bump drafting what Max and Daniel did in Baku?
Something like that 😂
As a cyclist I'm also well aware of reducing drag of the cyclist in front of you while getting a tow yourself.
If anyone here has Iracing try the Nascar legends cars of the Arca cars
Drafting is why you don't see outsiders racing on ovals in the Cup Series in NASCAR. A Cup race is no place to learn how to draft with these cars. In fact, unsafe drivers would get intentionally dumped into the wall by Cup regulars.
Αnd I thought we did that only on GRAN TURISMO...
When you are on a swing and want to go higher you ask for a push. Just seems second nature
Great video but the graphic at 0:48 has to be one of the worst diagrams of slipstream I’ve ever seen 💀 I’m very familiar with the concept but it took me like 5 seconds to understand that’s what it was trying to show
interesting video
Seeing BetterHelp popping up in more and more videos. Thought we were all aware of how bad they are.
atm the IMSA MX-5 races are just one big bump fest :)
Nascars drafting is amazing to see.
Its so much more than driving in a circle. Its chess all the way to the end :D
Had saw the clip of Lando spinning Max before but it's always funny.
Very cool. This is why you see us road cyclists doing lead outs to sprints at the end of races or see opponent teams working together in the peloton. The same principle works in the water as-well in mass water starts in triathlon or long range swimming. The wattage or energy used is really decreased.
I can't count the number of first place finishes made by second place cars in oval track races where the drafting car performs an intentional Pitt maneuver on the leaders left rear bumper.
That's not racing, that's cheating.
Brad keslouski is famous for bump drafting way too hard.
We even do this in Simracing. When racing on Nordschleife we use bump drafting whenever one of my teammates and me are close enough.
But mostly in oval races as you can see here: czcams.com/video/_rikVotuRBE/video.html
honestly this is just another example of racing drivers trying to go as fast as possible with little regard for safety and I love it. Shake and bake
2nd vid asking for a vid on rohrl
🦅 ** Free Bird ** Bump draft MF’er 🦅
This is drafting. It used to work in NASCAR till all the cars are just cookie cutters and identical to all other cars. Works better on short track than the two long ones Daytona and Talladega. Plus in NASCAR they bump each other around the track. And when doing it they don't break like F1/Indy cars do when they touch. Rusty Wallace said the same when he retired from NASCAR and was in a cup car with an Indy driver I forget his name. Rusty said we do 200mph around a track. Indy guy goes well we do 220 around the track. Rusty said well we bumping the hell out of each other at that speed. Indy guy goes oh we touch we crash/break. Although I haven't watched NASCAR since the Faux Noose Hoax. I had been slowing down watching it and that was almost the last straw. Then NASCAR had everyone bowing down to Bubba "Smollett" Wallace and kissing his feet thinking he was oppressed. Yet his White daddy was top of a bank the entire time he grew up thus he was never oppressed just a spoiled brat.
Betterhelp?????
Hii
RUBBING IS RACING!!!!
Slipstreem?
We call it bump drafting.
@@joeyj1617 oh, cool
@@joeyj1617 bump drafting is when you actually touch, whereas slipstreaming is just making use of the low pressure wake behind a car to increase speed.
@@slartibartfast2649 yeah I know lol. In the video he is describing bump drafting and not slip streaming.
WELL U DID PUSH UR SELF TO A BARRIER AND THEN QUALIFIED SECOND AHMM Russell
PLZ
Of course you would crash into the car in front of you, out of sheer boredom, when driving in a circle for nine millions laps. Then call it "strategy" - very American 😅
Oval racing is funnier tham it seems, strategies, crashes, even driving skills is really awesome to drive in oval and rovals, i was the kind of guy who thought it was boring though is really fun and easy to do however being fast takes time as any other category
Oval racing is extremely precise, requires 100% focus all the time, bad brakes, a 3500 lb car that has substantial oversteer, high horsepower/low downforce, and learning “side force.” In fact, no former formula 1 driver has won an oval race in the modern era (25-30 years) despite 500+ combined starts. Oval champions in Indycar like Franchitti and Hornish also were pretty bad. Statistically speaking, a driver should be able to “luck” into a win with a 1/3 of that number.
The 1.5 milers are extremely difficult especially when a driver masters the art of running the wall.
