$1.60/mile is pretty average for running 2 cars. As you said the best way is to go 3 car wedge or a 4 car. I personally wouldn't touch a 5 car, those things are scary if you watch guys hauling them. The other option is 2 trucks/2 vans should get the average up a bit vs 2 cars or a mix. 2 things though as far as freight vs cars that give the slight advantage to cars over freight as far as convenience. 1) you load/unload yourself, meaning no waiting to be loaded uploaded, it's usually quick and easy loading/unloading. 2) COD.. Most cars are paying COD.. Meaning no waiting to get paid. I do a mix of freight & cars but I use a 40ft Big Tex. I'm having the gooseneck cut off and it modified to be an actual step deck trailer like a semi step deck trailer, so I can have 50ft of deck space which means 3 vehicles or lots of freight. IMO that is the best option for a hotshot truck. a 50ft step deck.. It's just a shame only 1 or 2 companies make them and they want to charge you $20-30k for one so I'm having mine custom made. Oh 1 last thing.. it depends greatly where you are.. In some places, you can get $1/mile on cars pretty consistently. Also, certain big brokers will often pay very well for rush orders. I pulled a F150 from KY to OK for $1.50/mile just for that truck. I've also had $2/mile cars from that same broker because they need it moved.. but personally, I would stay away from enclosed unless you are in the right market. If you check the prices on central, they aren't much better than regular in most cases. You really need direct customers to do enclosed.
@@migflowers the main load board for cars is central dispatch. As far as what is more or what pays better it's often very seasonal and area-related for both freight and cars. I'm out of FL so it's a no-brainer for me to run mostly cars until I'm at least out of the southeast. However, if I was mid west I'd probably run more freight. You just have to look at your market. The biggest thing with cars is it's really hard to make any money as a non cdl set up unless you are running around in the NE. Yes it can be done but you struggle a lot. You really need to be able to carry at least 3 cars most of the time to keep consistent revenue. The other thing is cars are always heavy.. You won't get a sweet 2k lbs car load it will always be 10k - 18k for 3 vehicles depending on what you carry. As far as individual cars vs freight yeah there is a lot more cars and cars are everywhere. You can always find a car to stick on a trailer but 1 car isn't a load you still need to find more than just 1 and that can sometimes be a struggle with just a 2 car because you need both cars to pay high vs if you have a 3 or 4 car trailer .50-.60/mile cars can be profitable because you can run 4 of them. You just have to watch for the diminishing returns because trying to pick up 3 or 4 cars in one day and get miles on the road can be a challenge. That's one of the reasons I wouldn't go over a 4 car you usually don't get 3 or 4 cars going to the same place so you can spend a lot of time picking up and dropping. 1 last thing, in freight hotshot, is often looked down upon because they don't see us as real truckers, but with cars they actually like hotshots because we can deliver into residential neighborhoods and small dealerships. Also, we can get it there faster than a 9 or 10 car. I would probably say cross-country freight is more profitable, but regionally cars can be better to stay running. Like I run SE a lot so I can't really keep moving with freight very easy but I can with cars. However, going NE to Cali or back and forth or in the mid-west freight is likely better.
@@crockett5 wow thanks for the info! Outstanding insights! I'm in Houston, just down I-10 from you. Right now I'm in an old 3/4 ton Ram and REALLY need to get into a newer 1 ton. The company I run for lets us borrow their 20' trailer but I know I need to get something like 30' and still stay under 26,000 lbs. I've been trying to find the time to get my CDL but I'm always so busy.
@@migflowers I'm not up to par on Houston but Tx in general is really hit or miss just like FL is for both freight and cars. There are so many guys doing it there they drive the rates down, same as here in FL with the car haulers. As for a trailer if you are trying to go with a flat one you need at least a 36ft for 2 vehicles that's kinda the standard size on 2 cars trailers. You really need to look at your insurance rates before you do anything it's very expensive. You won't find many people in this biz paying less than $1k/month and many are over $2k/month.. Trucking insurance even for hotshot is very expensive. It will cost you more than the truck.
As always great video and information glad to see you ladies are keeping busy keep me lifted in prayers I've been broke down since last Friday in the dodge dealer now to try and find out what's going on with my truck
Your correct unless you have a 3 or 4 car hauler or a enclosed 2 car hauler hauling high end cars or owners willing to pay more for any car but preferred enclosed trailer.
Also, I can see where the back of your decks flexed and the boards r letting loose. Typical if you put weight back of the axel. May want to take a 4-6 inch wide steel strap as long as your trailer is wide and weld it to the outside frame to steady it
Great video as always! Where do you find your car loads? Would you guesstimate there’s more cars than freight? Oh, howdy from Houston I go by Nationwide Trailers almost daily!
Get the proper ratchet straps for tires! They are cheap. Never run a strap through spokes. I run Hotshot and will do a auction car load to get out of Florida for fuel. I also have a 28' enclosed trailer for the special car hauls, usually for car shows. That is always a money maker.
On those old tractors like that I carried 4 foot long strips of conveyor belting for the back tires to sit on so they didn't wreck my deck boards.. just a suggestion.
One question I have based on my experience hauling cars (actually new pickups for Schlumberger and Dowells). I know you have to carry extra cargo insurance. Did you factor that into your rates?
**Hello , can you show a quick video of how you secure loads that are placed where the fenders are? I'm planning to get a similar trailer but would like to know how you secure and load where the fenders are, thanks.
As a car hauler, all new car manufacturers require over the wheel straps. Those side pull lasso type straps are awful for the vehicles alignments, wheels, bushings, etc and would NEVER hold in an accident, especially the way they have them on the charger. I’m shocked they are even legal. Not sure I’d take advice here. No offense ladies, all flat bed trailers do the same because they aren’t built to haul vehicles…
You are definitely right. I also have a 40ft gooseneck. (35+5 with mega Ramps) and 2 cars are max for that trailer… unless maybe you could fit 3 smart cars/mini coopers lol. I got my flat deck for freight but if you ever need to throw a vehicle on it you Can do that as well. With a car hauler trailer you’re confined to JUST VEHICLES! GREAT WORK AS ALWAYS NAT, keep it up ;) IG: @BradfordLegacyLogistics P.s. check your email when you get a chance.
I know this isn’t on topic with this video but I can tell you know your stuff. I’m going to start out non cdl and have a f350, non dually. I’m trying to find out what trailer I should get. Is there a length or size I should try and stay around. I’m a fan of the big Tex brands but there are so many options. Any suggestions would be great. By the way love the videos! Keep pumping them out!
Good for you! Yes, get the longest, lightest trailer you can find within budget. Big tex isn't known for light trailers. Hauling a 10k# big tex trailer is a lot of trailer weight if you're going non cdl.
Good day Ms. Natalie I hope this finds you well and safe. I have 2 questions, 1st, have you considered putting a proper sleeper on the back, instead of your backseat, and adding a small generator for air-conditioning, thus dropping your hotel stays. 2nd, when you state enclosed car carriers, are you considering using your current fleet of trucks, or would you upgrade to a full semi. Have a beautiful day.
I have been trying to figure out generator for a/c....got any recommendations? I have a lot of hotshot equipment that is generating good revenue right now. I'm going to stick with what I've got 🙂

Yeah, if you are just doing cars the EZ4 style is likely best option. The mini 5 is a no go IMO.. if you watch how they have to be loaded it's a very time-consuming to load the top rack on a mini 5 and scary looking at how much the sway when loaded.
