- BIG SUR Calif. 1969
A musical documentary of the 1969 Big Sur Folk Festival, filmed in a chaotic style reminiscent of Woodstock. It features performances by Joan Baez, John Sebastian, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Joni Mitchell, and the Combs Sisters.
Some of the finest folk singers and musicians in the world positioned themselves on the edge of some of America's most glorious scenery for a farewell to summer and a celebration of nonviolence in mid-September. It was the sixth annual Big Sur Folk Festival.
The festival, held on the tree-shaded lawns of Esalen, also differed from other recent celebrations in that here the "scene" did not eclipse the music, but merely served as a complement. According to its producers, Nancy Carlen and Paula Kates, Big Sur was designed as a "performers festival," an opportunity for artists to come together after a hectic summer on the festival circuit for some peace and solitude.
Crosby Stills Nash and Young played the final set, as on Saturday, repeatedly bringing the thinning crowd to it's feet. For a finale - with the audience pushed forward around the pool, closer to the performers now - everyone at the festival reprised "Oh Happy Day". - Hudba
Oh to be there now, at 63 years old, knowing what I know now, missing those days so much!
I saw this on PBS in NYC in 1981. First time I've seen it since.
I was there! My 1960 VW bus is shown at 1:28 minutes spot poorly parked on side of road. Film didn't pick up the color, it almost looks black. Actually leaf green I made pine lumber 2 x 6 bumpers that I burnt and wire brushed. The next weekend my friend and I went to the Monterey Jazz Festival which didn't have the same vibe.
Took a class there last year (Esalen) and this brings back such great memories of that place. Had no idea about this film. Mainly crushing on Mimi Farina, such a beautiful person and performer. Looking for more footage of her. Esalen is such ground zero for the most beautiful place on Earth.
Esalen was the centerpiece of the 60’s ideology that these artists expressed so beautifully. I’ve been there 3 times. I sure miss those days and that place.
@@davidlusk6593 - Me too. The last class I had booked for July of last year was canceled due to Covid. Have heard from other friends who have been since it was suffering from limited staff. I will treasure my last visit as it really was a lovely week.
Good to see the VW Micro Bus with vista windows are well represented . Vintage hippy.
This America short lived and long gone. Hard to believe Vietnam was raging like an inferno at this same time. Still, nobody lived and let their hair down quite like the late sixties hippies and cool cats!
Dig the longboard on top of the car...checking the Big Sur surf....all the smiling, happy faces...love it!
Esalen......what an experience! Growing up in the Monterey area, we'd head 'down coast' for a night in the hot tubs. So f****d up the next morning that the ride back was perilous.
That does it! I've made up my mind! I don't ever wanna see Hollywood...I'd rather go to BIG SUR instead!
My old stomping grounds :)
i was born in 1944 still good music now in 2013
I went to the 1967 festival with Chambers brothers headlining.
oh my, :-), memories flooding me. I was there, not this scene, but back in the hills. too many people...
I'm 40 yrs old & no only did I not know these festivals to ever exist--I cannot believe that that have these pieces of musical history chronicled on Film! Amazing. And good quality at that. Where do you guys find all these? I'm surprised they haven't been lost to time, or something.
I remember I taped this once off Much Music, but I never ended up watching it.Don't you just love CZcams?
She's got quite the lovely voice...
I'm going there now. be back later.
+LateNotes - I'm going with you. When do we leave?
I hadn't heard the slang term 'heavy' used for many years till this video. 'Something heavy to do on a light day'
is that a real Poncho? or a Sears poncho?
I want a MARTIN D-45 guitar that looks and sounds excellent like the one STEPHEN STILLS is playing with JOHN SEBASTIAN. Plus, a 12-string version of this would be excellent, and I do not want built in pickups on it at all.
they should start up again
Check out all the VW'S!!! I've got an old vw bus and I always wonder if it was at an old show like this:)
THAT CHICK IS LILLIAN ROXON!!!!!!!!! FAMOUS AUSTRALIAN MUSIC JOURNO WHO WAS BASED IN NYC AND WAS A DENIZEN OF MAX'S KANSAS CITY. SADLY SHE DIED IN 1973 - THE GOOD DIE YOUNG.
Mobile Line. John Sebastian used to play it a lot.
it sounds like they're playing a variation on Rock Island Line
I was 13 and sooo angry I couldn't go! Go visit as HUGE deposit of "shale" found in Monterey county and BIG OIL is gettin' ready to FRACK the hell out of the place!
god i love the way the ass end of a vw bus looks best 1100 dollars i ever spent
ya know ive got to admit, and being a huge stephen stills fan, john sebastian sings a ton better than stephen.
You might want to take lesson for awhile... lets say your life. Then maybe you could tune a guitar like stephen.
the 2000's are soooo lame. technology isss sooo lame.
I love CSNY an these other bands but Joan Baez MURDERS "i shall be released" gosh she has a terrible voice
