one of the greatest groups, lovely music and touch upon the heartstrings of our minds and memories. I did not ever see them live, but looks like they always put on a good show, and of course, their energy was contagious.
Well, we certainly loved the Moby Grapes, as Mike Douglas introduced them on his 'show, and we all positively enjoyed "Hey' Grandma" anytime we heard it, but many do not know that the tune was 'covered' by some notable groups; and one of my favorites, who I never thought would handle it, was the 'Move', who do a very remarkable presentation on their BBC performance, way groovy indeed!☆¡ 😉
Moby Grape at the peak of their game. Skip Spence was THE lost genius of the 1960s. Check out the tunes he wrote for the Airplane before he split. They are great songs as well as his Moby Grape classics. What a band!
I just received my Oar album today. Mesmerizing. From the power of Moby Grape to the extreme sensitivity of Oar.bWhat a long strange trip. Go Rock and Roll.
Saw them in Philadelphia at a show with fifteen other acts, Sonny and Cher the headliners. Moby was one of the first to play. Started their set by mouthing the lyrics of the first song and then all coming in on the chorus - blew my mind (as we said after every other sentence in those days). Became an instant fan! Ran out that week to buy a fringed buckskin jacket - which got stolen the same week at Day's Deli off Rittenhouse Square...guess there were a lot of other Skip Spence fans those days...Now, at 77-yrs-old, still display, and play, that incredible first album. Truly fantastic classic record!
A great song writer once once humbly wondered why, in a sad cafe, fate shined a bright steady light on only a few. Certainly few other bands deserved the recognition Moby Grape should had.
From tis camera angle, we really get to see Jerry's flying fingers! I'm well acquainted with the sound technology of the time (I was in a band too, and these guys were among my heroes) but it's a pity we can't hear it well. Go and listen to the album, if you're not familiar with this band. They were great, Monterey was great, music was at a peak of energy at that time.
that seems to be the case, tho I never saw them in person, but I spent many happy hours listening to their albums. very talented and very mismanaged by Katz fellow, who sounded from many reports like a perfect dick. Still love almost all of their tunes, especially "naked"
The Grape was scheduled to play before Otis Redding on Saturday nite, but when manager Matthew Katz demanded $1 million to let the band’s set be filmed, the Grape got yanked from the Saturday lineup. They ended as the opening act on Friday night. It was one of many stupid things Katz did that destroyed Moby Grape’s initial success. I suspect that filmmaker D.A. Pennebaker decided to film the band anyway, in case maybe a deal could be worked out later, and he managed to get the first song filmed before Katz shut down the filming. If there’s any more film of the Grape’s Monterey performance, it hasn’t surfaced yet as far as I know. I have heard some people refer to Matthew Katz as a “%$#@& f_ck!ng a$$hole”, but I can only report it as hearsay. Of course, I would never say such a thing about him without direct first-hand confirmation. 😎
They got bumped from a prime slot due to this asshole. Then he shut down the filming. All he had to do was let the band get filmed and negotiate later on. They would have been a far more popular group had he not done that. If they were in the movie their record sales alone would have been much more.
They did open the Saturday night slot and Otis closed it but there was something like 7 or 8 artists on inbetween. Friday night was the opening night and the first artist on was The Association
He screwed the Airplane, they escaped, so he doubled down on Grape and It’s a Beautiful Day. For decades the only way you could get their first two albums was through Katz’s overpriced private label, and their post Katz stuff was OOP.

Fall, 1968. Cream and Moby Grape played New Haven the same night. I choose the Grape. I would loved to have seen Cream, but I have never regretted my choice.
Thanks for posting this. Moby Grape were a great band. Includung this performance, Buffalo Springfield, the Byrds, & The Blues Project, I am wondering how these groups were left out of of The Monterey Pop film.
A pretty big book could be written about all the chaos that went into the making of the Monterey Pop festival and film. Its a wonder it took place at all with all the early turmoil but it worked out fine. As far as Buffalo was concerned no Neil playing, no Buffalo, seriously who wants to see Crosby in Neils place. If i remember right Blues Project play on the Anniversary DVD's a song or two. I might be wrong on that?
@@hammer44head : Thanks for the info on the Monterey Pop Festival. I saw both Buffalo Springfield & The Blues Project performances awhile ago. Truly, I liked the performances of both groups. I agree that David Crosby does not measure up to Young as a writer or musician. But his vocals in my opinion are excellent. All I was trying to relate was that personally I would have enjoyed watching these bands more than sitting through the pretentious performances of Hendrix & The Who. I know to most I would appear to have no taste in music or crazy.😊 I like many of the recordings of both artists but found both of them( here comes that word again) pretentious & boring in concert . I admit that back in 1989 I saw The Who at Giant Stadium in New Jersey & they were very good. But that was the 4th time I had seen them. They did not impress me the three previous times. Now, Hendrix I saw twice & was bored by his antics & his sloppy solos. However, I might have felt differently today if I would have seen him at The Fillmore East on New Year's Eve where he recorded "The Band of Gypies" album. But a close friend at the time took the tickets & sold them. No further discussion is necessary. In closing, as of today the acts from the Montrery Pop film that I enjoyed the most are Ravi Shanker, Otis Redding, & Simon & Garfunkel. Thanks for your response & Stay Healthy✌

Awesome performance...why this was left out of DA Pennebaker's monterey pop documentary I will never know. Probably the single greatest American band of the 60s, though a couple others come close.
No he was stalling to give them time to set up. The manager apparently demanded a lot of money. I've read numerous amounts but take everything with a grain of salt. This was still before the acts made the money. The bands always got the shaft. The general consensus is Peter Grant was the 1st manager to tell the promoters what they were going to pay or Zep wouldn't perform. There are great stories about how he got his way.
Alexander “Skip” Spence was my grandfather so cool to see him perform, if anyone has more footage like this please post it!

@@spudwas They should really make a complete Monterey Pop set like they did for Woodstock last year.
@@ervbefelnareik7604 You got it!

ANYTHING from this Fest is going to get THUMBZ UP from Me!!
Amen, Boys, AMEN!
I’m going out on a limb here but I’m guessing Mathew Katz is the reason they weren’t in the original D.A.’s Monterey film.
omg where you find this thanks from the bottom of my heart i love this band there music stands the test of time loved Skippy he was brilliant song writer
Awesome performance...why this was left out of DA Pennebaker's monterey pop documentary I will never know. Probably the single greatest American band of the 60s, though a couple others come close.
Their manager wanted a million dollars for it's inclusion in the film. Wish it would have been included as well.
@William Ruddock he fucked himself in the end.. It's a Beautiful Day, Moby.. asshole of legend..
Please more!!!
Smothers looking for audience to be kind to the band as if they're nervous - Grape out and attacks the stage. I don't think they needed sympathy!
Just turn them loose..y' know? How hard is that??
Skippy is on!
Wow man thank you again
Cool to see this but miss those killer harmonies
Wow,great... at last
they ran the table at Monterey Pop
THE GREATEST GUIT-SLINGER IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD - JERRY ( NOT GARCIA ) MILLER R.I.P.
they were shafted by their manager and the record company as usual
