- BIG SUR Calif. 1969
A musical documentary of the 1969 Big Sur Folk Festival, filmed in a chaotic style reminiscent of Woodstock. It features performances by Joan Baez, John Sebastian, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Joni Mitchell, and the Combs Sisters.
Some of the finest folk singers and musicians in the world positioned themselves on the edge of some of America's most glorious scenery for a farewell to summer and a celebration of nonviolence in mid-September. It was the sixth annual Big Sur Folk Festival.
The festival, held on the tree-shaded lawns of Esalen, also differed from other recent celebrations in that here the "scene" did not eclipse the music, but merely served as a complement. According to its producers, Nancy Carlen and Paula Kates, Big Sur was designed as a "performers festival," an opportunity for artists to come together after a hectic summer on the festival circuit for some peace and solitude.
Crosby Stills Nash and Young played the final set, as on Saturday, repeatedly bringing the thinning crowd to it's feet. For a finale - with the audience pushed forward around the pool, closer to the performers now - everyone at the festival reprise "Oh Happy Day". - Hudba
My goodness, Joan singing with such a perfect voice, the voice I have loved since the 60's. Joan looking so beautiful with those sad eyes and high cheekbones.
Die Erinnerung ist das einzige Paradies aus dem wir nicht vertrieben werden.
Peter from Germany, remembering my trip from San Francisco to San Diego.
The circumstances of the song and the emotion she shows in singing it give this performance a real sense of pathos. I feel for her.
BEAUTIFUL SONG ❤BEAUTIFUL JOAN
Having been raised on Joan, CSNY, and come to the 2 in the morning hot springs here, this is a special place and I can feel the energy of all who came before
wow, I love this song for so many years ... very surprizing to see great video!! Thanks for sharing Joans song!!!!
I'm amazed at the solace of the crowd. It wasn't like a concert is now. Those people were there to relax and feel good. I understand there will never be a big demand for folks music, but I wish someone would try to duplicate something like this. While it could never be replicated, I think a very relaxing picnic could be organized. I bet some old hippies would be game, let old hippies in free and make younger people pay. I'd gladly pay for an event like this.
Listen to Rich Warren's "The Midnight Special", "The Folk Sampler" Mike Flynn's program - you can hear both online & see playlists
Olde HickoryT That part about how you were wishing something like this could be replicated nails exactly what I have been wondering about for sooo long with African American musicians in terms of Jimi Hendrix!! I just have gone insane trying to figure out why there aren't any guitarists that can at least try to do what he did or carry on in the same spirit?
Ok yes, I know about Lenny Kravitz and actually some of his stuff is right in there, but how often do you hear his stuff blaring away at a pub or on a Harley Davidson?
Baez wrote this song for her husband and father of her child, David Harris, who was imprisoned because of draft resistance for 15 month. Some people may be bored, I'm touched...
Joan Baez y Joni Mitchell. Dos Ángeles inconmensurables
Voice of the angels...I've sat on that same deck many times eating breakfast, but I missed her that day. And David Crosby. And Steven Stills. Graham Nash. John Sebastian.
I was probably at home washing my car...
I look out at the crowd watching and listening to Joan, and I think I see the faces of so many that I've seen at Obama rallies, and Hillary rallies. I wonder how we got to the places we've come to in our lives, and how we've survived through the years. For me, Joan has gotten me through so many tough times, so much sadness, so many joys and triumphs. Always there, always bringing pure spirit and grace to those moments...
You want some spirit and grace, turn to God and his son Jesus.
The Queen of folk music, then and now.
Mexican American, Joan Baez.
This was the golden age of the hippie music. Good video!
Guita picking is amazing!
Wow! Who's lovlier than Joan? Outstanding.
David is David Harris, her husband at the time. She wrote several songs about their relationship and they divorced in 1973.
Thanks for bringing this concert to CZcams. I saw it very early on a Sunday morning three years ago and haven't been able to find it on any media.
A treasure
foi um sonho
She recorded it on her I LIVE ONE DAY AT A TIME album, which came out a few months later, in early 1970.
Joan Baez is a musical legend without being a musical legend
This is like heaven on earth...
Beautiful & touching... Thanks !!!
Beautiful song
That's true and it when you consider their similarity she is more appropriate than Moore. She deserves a biopic!
wunderschön
The song is called: A Song for David.
You find it on several Joan Baez CD's
thanks for background story @frankie28web :) btw everyone's clothes are so colorful and interesting. beautiful
There was a well known photo showing Joan, Joni, Judy Collins and Mimi Farinia (and I think Mama Cass too) at a later Newport (probably '67 or '68) jamming together onstage, though I don't now what song they were singing, or if whatever they were singing was ever recorded.
I have that picture, and yes Mama Cass was in it. I always assumed they were singing "Get Together" (come on people smile on your brother). Joni is holding a little dark-haired baby.
@frankie28web It's sad he later was heard to say that it was worse to be in prison, and that he would have been better off in the service. They split shorty after he was released.
Your mom was a beautiful lady.
Thanks for posting this. It is great. I wonder if these guys are all living in Palo Alto now, driving BMWs.
Joan lives in a town close to palo alto. She dated steve jobs for several yrs
Alot of them live in wealthy areas in southern ca tho Joan lives just south of san francisco
Great song, does anybody know the name of the song by any chance? Thx for posting this!!! :)
She was a great ANTI-communist activist. Campaigned against China, No Viet, Russia, Czech Repub, Poland. She was a great friend of Lech Walsea and Valclav Havel.
I think Jennifer Beals could do a good job if anyone did a Biopic.
natural beauty. probaly the most principled of the pop culture stars in that era who claimed to support the 'movement'... she walked the walk. too bad dylan trashed & embarrassed her back in the mid '60's in england.
whats that song??
