- BIG SUR Calif. 1969
A musical documentary of the 1969 Big Sur Folk Festival, filmed in a chaotic style reminiscent of Woodstock. It features performances by Joan Baez, John Sebastian, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, and the Combs Sisters.
Some of the finest folk singers and musicians in the world positioned themselves on the edge of some of America's most glorious scenery for a farewell to summer and a celebration of nonviolence in mid-September. It was the sixth annual Big Sur Folk Festival.
The festival, held on the tree-shaded lawns of Esalen, also differed from other recent celebrations in that here the "scene" did not eclipse the music, but merely served as a complement. According to its producers, Nancy Carlen and Paula Kates, Big Sur was designed as a "performers festival," an opportunity for artists to come together after a hectic summer on the festival circuit for some peace and solitude.
Crosby Stills Nash and Young played the final set, as on Saturday, repeatedly bringing the thinning crowd to it's feet. For a finale - with the audience pushed forward around the pool, closer to the performers now - everyone at the festival reprise "Oh Happy Day". - Hudba
Well 1min and 33seconds into video there I am full screen 21yrs old, I will be 65 in 2 days and by God I recognized myself, I was with my boyfriend Jackson Browne & we stayed in a cabin treated like royalty even in those days....what a great Birthday gift, I was young !!!!
Wow amazing!
And you are kind of famous! Very beautiful :)
How did you meet Jackson Browne and where?
Were you dating for very long?
That's great, Janice. I thought, she's so beautiful and what a nice/sweet moment caught when you realize the camera found you. We were all young, and now can appreciate what a magical/abundant time it was.
That’s one of the most beautiful performances I’ve ever seen.
it is oh so peaceful here man
So great to hear Joni's rendition of Get Together. I've wondered if they were ever friends with Jesse Colin Young. His is a voice that would go so beautifully with this crowd.
Great stuff. I wish I had a time machine! No other place in the World as beautiful as Big Sur prior to the 70's!
my thoughts too. she just transfixes me-her singing is sensational and her beauty is classical. Her rendition is without doubt the finest!
Oh Joni.
The only occasion I'm aware of when an angel has actually been caught on film
one beautiful moment in time.
Look at ole John Sebastian in his tie-dyes! We lived in Monterey CA. I was 12 in 69....man I wanted to be a hippie so bad. I can still smell the BIG SUR/Monterey/Salinas Valley from my childhood. The most beautiful, pristine place on Earth! Now BIG OIL is fighting to "frack" there, as a big shale deposit has been discovered. Go visit it BEFORE IT IS "TAR SANDS HELL" !!!!!!!
@bookkeeper57 it was a coffee house in Florida. Crosby had left the LA scene after leaving the Byrds to get some solace. He had just bought the Mayan for $22,000 and was more or less living off of it and check out the music scene where he found Joanie performing. They hit it off immediately and she came back to LA with him shortly after. The rest, as they say, is history. She met Graham and the others, Crosby produced her first album and her career took off.
Joni is so beautiful.....
Absolutely great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I so love Joni and CSNY! Thanks for sharing this~
Bloody Brilliant!
Smiles all round - looks like a stress free, laid back gig as opposed to Woodstock where you can see/hear the tension.
Thanks for posting.
Gosh, watching her right now, I just had an "I want to be her" moment. I don't think I've ever had one of those, at least not in a long time.
The True Hippie Anthem and long may it be sung. Thank you, Mr. Young!

@@lastnamefirst4035 Nice. I also thought Jesse wrote it.
An awesome era.The world needs to return to the simple attitudes from them.Love each other and fuck war.
Thanks Keith. I guess we'd be better off saying zeig heil in Japanese. But don't worry_ those who love you will continue to protect your ungrateful ass from real evil.
Don't forget to defund the cops too!
Love this vid. Saw a bit on the Joni documentary a few yrs. back. Have been looking for it ever since. Thanks!
I remember seeing this movie when it was released. Somebody put it on DVD PLEASE!
Martin, spend a little of your money, buy the rights and get a copy to the Film Institute for restoration and release.

Same comments as sparrowfalls. Bless youtube.I thought I'd go through life not seeing the whole of this clip after seeing a glimpse on the joni doco. There is a hippy god!
wonderful
I was there
Joni- great musician and great bum too! :)
that's kickass
Wow!
That is cool.
This song was a big hit for Jesse Colin Young/Youngbloods.
Yes, you are right. I found some of the posters - $3, $4
On the money issue, for what it's worth, this was a free admission concert and the performers were unpaid.
Where have all the flowers gone?
@Landulphcounter why say that? this was a long time ago when people were just beginning to shape the music that you take for granted, as an "industry". It was for fun and getting people to recreate, relax, crude as this seems to you. It is how it evolved and progressed BEFORE the packaging and processing of commercialism.
it was graham nash that was wanting to marry Joni. She broke his heart coz she had to keep following her creative desires before committment.
Lets Get Together by Dino Valenti
Aka chet powers
Looks to me like the group you're referring to had preferential front row seating. I am not sure I would call this 'made' to sit anywhere unless I am misunderstanding.
Is that all you got?, "steamin pile?". I win.
Where is this taken, the kitchen scene
nash comes off as a creepy cat in this video
@Igotlife92 Hey you know the name of the song Cn you tell me please?
What is the name of this song please? Thank you for posting it!
"Get Together"by the Youngbloods
The 'Heckler' with a big grin on his face? Stills went out to throw him in the pool. Stills got out of order because he would have been high as a kite - I would have tried to punch Stills too..
The Big Sur was a festival for the musicians to please themselves & have a jam with friends without the stress that Woodstock brought.
No tension to be seen apart from Stills having a tantrum when fun turned to a contest of manhood.
By the way, river, you seem to think because someone makes money, they are conventional. Believe me, in my experience, it's quite the reverse. You think Neil Young is "inside the lines?" You think "Ohio" is 'inside the lines?' What have YOU achieved that is remotely close to the legacy these wonderful artists have given us?
Again, take a deep whiff o' what you been shovellin'!
where's neil?
not the Youngbloods
6:00 see? back in 1969, ecology meant picking up trash/anti-litter--ALL of it and sending ALL of to the dump/landfill. Now, I wonder what idiocy we're doing today?
; )
couldn't let this one go. making money makes you a slave to societies conventions, or to the conventions of the people paying you. Do not justify the selling out, or cashing in thing to me. I know it must be hard to resolve the hippees growing up and becoming the very "greed-heads" they were fighting. If you have experiace with rich people not being "conventional" then you are probably one of the people who sold out, and are now dealing with the guilt of that. I'm working on my legacy,im young
Neil young is way out side the lines, that's why I love him, that's why I looked at this video. I am definatley more your typical crazy horse fan. I read in Neil's biography that the Big Sur performance was interesting. I click on this, and what do I find? A bunch of silly middle class kids being boring, and it offended my ears, so I'm sorry. This performance to me is what I dislike about the hippee generation, and the myth we've been sold, though this movie and the woodstock movie.
You would reject Van Gogh because he drew 'outside the lines.' 6 or 7 Multi-millionaires in there, far as I can tell.
SOMEONE musta liked'em!
Joke's on you, dude...
stephen loved joni and she threw him over for graham (our house for example) she didnt know what she had and as he tenderly kised her on the shoulder she immiadiatly went to be at graham side i know with stephens sensitive nature that must have hurt I would have been ther for him and i would never have that skinny dark haired runt when i could have had a blond god like Stephen she really was smoking the wrong things that time
It was all hippy bullshit -- Stephan should have pushed him into the pool and jumped
in after him - except he had his fur coat on....
but he wrote and sang some beautiful mus
No rythm. what a myth that this was good music/ good generation.
They're playing in front of a fancy pool, and stills confronting that guy in an agressive way, makes this movie offensive to me. It's hypocracy. CSN and Mitchell are full of shit, not me.They have the facny coats and fancy guitars at the fancy pool, like stills was sayin. How else can I judge them? YOung is alright Young himself dismisses the CSNY stuff. So, i'll take his advice and stick to the horse. Sorry I offended anyone's tastes. This is the overindulgence and greed of the 60's to me.
come on, this is clearly a bad performance. It drags. I don't dislike it because its "unconventional" like van gogh was in his day. I dislike it because it is bad, because it is boring, and because its uninspired. The fact that they are millionaires shows how "inside the lines" this stuff is. I like Neil Young, though.
