- BIG SUR Calif. 1969
A musical documentary of the 1969 Big Sur Folk Festival, filmed in a chaotic style reminiscent of Woodstock. It features performances by Joan Baez, John Sebastian, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, and the Combs Sisters.
Some of the finest folk singers and musicians in the world positioned themselves on the edge of some of America's most glorious scenery for a farewell to summer and a celebration of nonviolence in mid-September. It was the sixth annual Big Sur Folk Festival.
The festival, held on the tree-shaded lawns of Esalen, also differed from other recent celebrations in that here the "scene" did not eclipse the music, but merely served as a complement. According to its producers, Nancy Carlen and Paula Kates, Big Sur was designed as a "performers festival," an opportunity for artists to come together after a hectic summer on the festival circuit for some peace and solitude.
Crosby Stills Nash and Young played the final set, as on Saturday, repeatedly bringing the thinning crowd to it's feet. For a finale - with the audience pushed forward around the pool, closer to the performers now - everyone at the festival reprise "Oh Happy Day". - Hudba
John Sebastian sooocoool man
Excellent version of WOODSTOCK written and sung by JONI MITCHELL herself.
We need more gatherings like this
John Sebastian exact repeat of Woodstock performance….
Such a great song by Joni on such an amazing event in 1969.
Boy joni mitchell is very angelic when she sings.
Thanks so much for posting.
I think Sebastian is speaking of a cosmic swing. The crowd seems to understand where he is coming from. Maybe the swing signifies the rapidity of movement from one reality to another. In other words, he is describing how one may feel while tripping on acid.
mda037 well said.
It still matters lots, there are a heap of artists out there every bit as good as Joni. Still I agree with you 'bout it makin' one cry, I certainly was in tears. I think it was the wonderful optimisim that that period of music had. Sad we were never able to see the optimisim become realism.
happy birthday woodstock ! 40 years old !
JONI U FUCKING ROCK THIS SONG!!!!!!!
Try these and see what ya think. Piers Faccini, Ron Sexsmith, Missy Higgens, Antony and the Jonstons, Amos Lee, and even John Mayer. They all here on CZcams.
Democritous: Listen to Joni's lyrics!! She is the most "confessional" singer ever. She lived the life - and then some!!!
She was as 'committed' a counter-culture idealist as anyone but yes, she stood out and Id put that down to something regarded as a huge flaw by the "longhairs & stoners" - her superiority. Sebastian in the Spoonful briefly matched her technical ability as a writer but was never as forward thinking. As for the rest of the line-up here, entertaining though they may have been, Mitchell was light years ahead.
wowo wowow so beautiful...and now what we have?nothing like this...here in italy is all so fakeeee...love and peace claudia
Holy Christ. That "yodel" starting at 7:30 could peel the paint off a wall.
I never cared for jonis singing during this period. great lyrics tho
I was there. There's a guy with long hair with some gray in it. At the time I thought his hair was white, now his hair looks dark!
I was there....Nepenthe...
was to every Big Sur fest from 69 until they sadly ended. we would go for free and now that pool in front of John is only for rich...
...Well, you know what they say about opinions...
Woops its Antony and the Johnsons not Jonstons. Fistfull of love is my favourite. Also Ben Harper is another (reasonably) new artist I didn't mention.
Interesting point but ultimately I disagree. The "school marm quality" you suggest, I've only seen at the Isle of White festival where her berating the crowd was entirely justified and a brave thing to do (none of the other performers dared step out of the 'Us & them' status quo). As for being "out of her element among the longhairs & stoners", you have a point but I don't see this as a negative...
He probably never took it off,,,,
Thanks for not posting the truth as I see it judgement tube. TYPICAL.
I don't think she's confessional....you're not getting the definition right. She says it herself she's not confessional.
Just ask Crosby and Nash - their fawning expressions during every Mitchell performance were not entirely down to sweet memories of previous California nights. They knew how out of their element they really were.
Both of them had long term intimate relationships w joni, especially nash

I think Neil Young and James Taylor too.
@@suzannelawson9215 well Joni was in demand for obvious reasons and back then there were few women musicians w Joni's talent
John Sebastian almost seems like he is on acid but if so doubt he could play guitar. Must be some Mendocino pot...some cool shoes
