  • BIG SUR Calif. 1969
A musical documentary of the 1969 Big Sur Folk Festival, filmed in a chaotic style reminiscent of Woodstock. It features performances by Joan Baez, John Sebastian, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, and the Combs Sisters.
Some of the finest folk singers and musicians in the world positioned themselves on the edge of some of America's most glorious scenery for a farewell to summer and a celebration of nonviolence in mid-September. It was the sixth annual Big Sur Folk Festival.
The festival, held on the tree-shaded lawns of Esalen, also differed from other recent celebrations in that here the "scene" did not eclipse the music, but merely served as a complement. According to its producers, Nancy Carlen and Paula Kates, Big Sur was designed as a "performers festival," an opportunity for artists to come together after a hectic summer on the festival circuit for some peace and solitude.
Crosby Stills Nash and Young played the final set, as on Saturday, repeatedly bringing the thinning crowd to it's feet. For a finale - with the audience pushed forward around the pool, closer to the performers now - everyone at the festival reprise "Oh Happy Day".

The dude with the face paint is my grandpa. I heard a story about him leaving a sugar cube with acid on it on a coffee table and my uncle who was 3 or 4 at the time ate it and completely lost his mind for a couple days . He’s ok now .... some what. But ya that’s my grandfather Kyle Lawton . He definitely was a trip

Your comment is funny, and I'm sure very true back then. For whatever reason I was fascinated by hippies from the time I was little, and in the 70's, thought the older kids with long hair, and the whole scene was awesome. I would of loved to be older then, but being 40 now, my days of wanting to be older are long gone. "Time Goes' Fast"

Jeez, I went to High School in the Tustin School District. They were our arch enemy in football, crosstown rival!
Graduated, rolled my own for a few years, and spent many a summer day in Big Sur.
Ya had to be there in the 60s, to understand it. Like Paris in the 20s. Culture, music, history, and art converging in a single locus.
The fire pit at Nepenthe, where stars might wander in-- John Lennon, Timothy Leary, Joanie, Clint Eastwood, or Fritz Perls.
I'm proud to be a Calfornian.

@Chastalard Hey Briar, I did a little volunteer work in the early days of Bread & Roses. What a different era that was : living on a funky houseboat for $38 a month, just beginning my long career in film work.
    peace through music,
    Hunter

Another great 60s Festival not known to many outside of the USA. I wish the whole movie was available for download on you tube, so that many more have a chance of experiencing it, over & over again. After all the period from 60s to mid 70s, saw a huge evolution on music & all the others arts as well. I'd venture to say it was "the Big Awakening".

To Nate Garcia and Anthony Langford commenting below ; I lived with Kyle in Newport Beach in 69' and drove up there to the Big Sur Celebration in his Bus along with some housemates , picking up about 20 hitchhikers as we rolled along . Kyle dropped as soon as we got to the Festival ......and we didn't see him again til he walked onstage , painted and naked and spoke to Joan Baez between songs......
and yes Anthony , he did get fired from his teaching job in So. Cal.that Fall.
Now to reply to BigDaddy1968 and his comment below....you don't know shit ! Kyle did go to Woodstock , hitching there from Newport Beach in August with our housemates Bill and Windowpane , returning to NB in time to drive up to Big Sur in his converted school bus , seen in the clip....just to set the record straight .

It's sad how this child has a father that is so fucking wacked out of his mind!
And how somebody didn't report this man to DHS, (ie. the makers of this film, the other attendees at the concert), is beyond comprehension! THIS IS CHILD ABUSE, plain and simple!

@bradkava well...the very intellectual observer would have noted certain similarities between hippies and republicans. Beyond the superficialities which were different, since hippies were first a reaction to them, there are other things which make them alike. However only the usual, run-of-the-mill hippie would be like them, and the radical folkie maybe not. But the orthodoxy of the radical folkie resembles the republican rigidity also, indeed.
