NEIL YOUNG - OLD MAN

Old man look at my life,
I'm a lot like you were.
Old man look at my life,
I'm a lot like you were.
Old man look at my life,
Twenty four
and there's so much more
Live alone in a paradise
That makes me think of two.
Love lost, such a cost,
Give me things
that don't get lost.
Like a coin that won't get tossed
Rolling home to you.
Old man take a look at my life
I'm a lot like you
I need someone to love me
the whole day through
Ah, one look in my eyes
and you can tell that's true.
Lullabies, look in your eyes,
Run around the same old town.
Doesn't mean that much to me
To mean that much to you.
I've been first and last
Look at how the time goes past.
But I'm all alone at last.
Rolling home to you.
Old man take a look at my life
I'm a lot like you
I need someone to love me
the whole day through
Ah, one look in my eyes
and you can tell that's true.
Old man look at my life,
I'm a lot like you were.
Old man look at my life,
I'm a lot like you were.

The sound is incredible. Neil doesn't even need a backup band. Hands down, this is the best version of this song.
100. ❤
this is 1971, his best.
Absolutely!
I actually saw him live several years ago with no band. Just him and his multiple instruments. It was amazing!!!!
Tell that to the dipshit above.
for one person on stage playing just a acoustic guitar, this song sounds amazing... probably One of the best sounding one-man with a acoustic guitar performances I've ever heard👏

Love this song! Never listened to words much when i was young; now im 57 w/🫀transplant, I Listen Now!
i agree. I have come back this video last ten years. Sometimes often, but less once in month.
Great sound helps a lot here.
Excellent for any three people, let alone one guy.
This is unplugged 20 years before unplugged. He was grunge before grunge and unplugged before unplugged. Excellent!
100% correct. He was authentic as hell. Grunge was too to a certain extent and wanted to mimic. You don't mimic Neil Young. Period!
I gotta say ur right
@@robinfrady5257 go 2 bed with your comparisons
Sad
He's a one man show, this is hard to pull off on a stage. One man with acoustic guitar owned the whole world, he gave you the energy of a whole band playing while in fact he's there all alone with his guitar.
He is quite grunge, you're right
Neil is a big model-train collector, and my Dad used to run into him at train shows and ask if he bought anything good. Neil would open his bag and show my Dad his new engine and they'd chat about it like it was no big deal. Just a legend showing my Dad his trains.
We used to joke that he'd sing to my Dad, "Old man take a look at my train, it's a lot like yours."
Sebastian Bach has the best model train collection
Josh Onn what about Patrick Swayze
@@DamnitBobbeh2399 lol yeah maybe it was Patrick Swayze

My dad left when I was 12 and I didn't see him again until 36 years later. It was a song that expressed the raw emotions I was feeling about my old man. The song took on a whole new meaning for me later in life.. As fate would have it, I ended up having to be his caretaker for the last 6 years of his life. I am glad I had a chance to get to know and spend time with him. Now I am the old man.
Was your dad’s name Richard?
Powerful. Thank you for sharing.

I didn't get this song until I got to my 30's also. I mean I understood what it was saying but I could not relate. Until one day I began to see more and more of him in myself hehe. We're all dad v 2.0 really ;) just a lil updated.
I wonder if Neil ever looks at this recording and gets chills as his younger self sings to his older self.

I think he mentioned somewhere he finds it awkward singing this song because the lyrics should change now to Old man take a look at my life I’m a lot like I am.

YeahNo101 ? hey i wanted to share with you what Jesus Christ said, He said in matthew 11:28-30 “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” wow! and Jesus Christ loves YOU so much, i’m going to bring up these 3 scriptures
john 3:16-21:
“for God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in Him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.”
romans 5:6-8:
“you see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
and romans 10:9-13:
“if you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in Him will never be put to shame.” For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile-the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on Him, for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
so God wants to redeem and restore you! He wants to give you true love and joy and peace not only on earth but in His eternal kingdom! but our sins have separated us from God, and the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is in those scriptures, His grace! so if you would turn away from your sins to follow God and put your faith and trust in Him and what He did for you He would gift you His grace which is eternal life in His kingdom where there will be no more death, or sorrow, or crying. there will be no more pain, for the former things have passed away. because He loves and cares for you so much! but if we deny and reject Him, He is just and holy and righteous and will have to deny and reject us of His kingdom. and there will be weeping and gnashing and fire when we’re separated from God, because in God is everything good but without Him is the opposite. there is also a channel here on youtube i appeal to you to watch it’s called “Christ forgiveness ministries” hear what they have to say! God bless you my friend accept Jesus Christ and He will give you true life here and in heaven and give it to you abundantly you His grace. amen 🙌

I lost my dad 5 years ago, and after a couple or weeks or so after he died, i stepped into this song in YT. It was the first time i heard it.
And i started to cry through the entire song. Even knowing that maybe the song is not inspired in Neil's father, the lyrics hit me so hard.
I'm a lot like my old man, and i miss him so much every day since he left.
That's sad. I like the song a lot too. Best regards
Lost my dad also 11 years ago. This was his favorite song. Hits me hard every time to. Hang in there brother.
Hey buddy your not alone. Lost my Dad at 18 years old from alcohol poising. 12 years ago now. Lost my Grandpa 2 years ago whom took my dads place. I can happily say I stuck by his side like he did mine and held his hand in the last seconds. This song hit me like how you say it got you. So happy that there is a song that can touch that pain because at times my mind can not even connect to the pain due to subconsciously blocking it. This song tears that wall down. The pain ironically feels great to feel strangely enough to say as it is to hear from someone who has not experienced.
Hang in there my man! Peace and love
That's what im afraid of is losing my dad

What impresses me most about this is the quality of the audio production, it does not sound 50+ years old. Also I like the raw power bubbling up underneath young Neil’s voice and the sound of that Martin dreadnought is just massive.

Me and my Dad used to blast this song, late Autumn nights in the Garage. Him working on restoring an old 1948 BSA bike, me fixing up and modding my small 125cc honda.
I didn't realise it then, but they were the best days of my life. The safety. The togetherness. The love we had for each other.
It's 8 years on now from his departure. Ironically, he died whilst riding his bike on his way home from work. God I miss him. A piece of me died that day.
Yet this song takes me right back, to the days I'll never get back. But the memories I'll hold on forever. These songs are like fragments of existence, etched into my soul, making me relive emotions of the past.
Songs evolve in your experience through life. Now I reflect on my old man, reminiscing, and I know one day, I'll be reflecting as an old man myself.

I listen to it now, I'm the age my dad was then then; Neil's the same age my dad was when he passed, and my youngest is nearly Neil's age when he sang this.
Neil and I are both old men. This song always felt like it was talking about the road in front of me. I listen today, and for the first time it's in the rear view mirror. "I've been the first and last. Look at how the time goes past."

I'm always impressed with his strumming in this song. The timing in this live version fuckin on point.
Don't ever underestimate the overwhelming power that a man can have with simply an acoustic guitar
This machine kills fascists!
Absolutely goddamn right.
..or a woman...STRONG by JASMINE LAMPORT...one for the DADS.
Great voice and just an acoustic
Perfection
I am that old man now , who would have thought it..
Look at how the time goes past
Alphonse Gabriel
i'm a lot like you where
Lol! I was thinking the same thing about myself
im only 20 but i can feel ya, old man im alot like you were, love you dad
This song really makes me think of my Dad now, he passed away 2 days after my 60th birthday.
I'm 65 and is was introduce to Neil Young when I was 18. Still love all his song to this very day .😊
Hello Janice.. how are you doing?
One of the most perfect songs ever written.
I prefer Gold Digger....
Never knew my father died when I was 6 weeks old. This song makes me think of him and how people say I act just like him. I'm a father now, and happy to watch my son grow up
That's great to read. My dad passed away when I was 21, still miss him a lot.
Now, I have a seven your old son myself. And there will be a day he will be the old man, listening to this song and thinking of his old man.
Clint Holt I can so relate to this, lost my dad to cancer when I was 9, I have few memories of him and those are faint, I too grew up having people say how much I look, sound and act just like him. I'm now 55, took me 46 years to cry over losing him, this song, just wants to make me cry more.
Clint Holt :(Are you? What a shame!
I’m ashamed to say that though I’m now in my sixty’s I’ve only just discovered how good this man is! Better late then never.
Right on🤟🏻 atleast you discovered em👌🏻
Better Late than been late, and enjoy,
You know what's strange? My dad is 72 now. Vietnam Vet. He has heard of guys like Neil Young and Bob Dylan, knows they were huge Americon Icons, but was never a big fan of either. Growing up back then with such huge political issues, he decided to choose a side, and it wasn't theirs. He felt that while he and many patriotic boys were fighting for their country, these guys were whining about it in the comforts of their homes and celebrity. Different realities.
Same!
@@Leslie_Horwinkle Are you stupid or something? Let's begin with...what year was Neil Young born? Do you know math? Or do you not know when the Vietnam War began or ended?
I remember in 1971 my girlfriend in England when I lived there said , ' there is some Canadian on the TV tonight ". Was so proud of this guy he was so talented and came across like a likeable guy.
"Doesn't mean that much to me, to mean that much to you."
I'm not sure I ever heard that lyric clearly before, and hearing it really makes me wanna call my dad and just talk to him, hear his voice.
I've still got time left with him here, I don't wanna see him go and worry about what wasn't said.
I'm gonna call him.
Call him
Ya call him mate. dont wait another day brotha!!
I call my parents almost every day. The older i get, the more i realize how impermanent things are...and also how lucky i was to be born of such great parents
@@holezzz15 Call him. I lost my father, my best friend in 2019. I keep his picture on my wall and I still dream of him sometimes and wake up thinking that he is still alive. We were very close. He never judged me harshly and always was there for me. Best father a person could ever have. He was a simple man with simple tastes. He never berated me for my mistakes and was kind and forgiving to me. He let me live my life and did not try to live his own dreams and desires through me. I tried to be a good son. I will live out my life well and raise my own children, and enjoy my days on this earth, and then when my time comes, I know he will be there waiting for me and we will again meet with big hugs, and big smiles. No doubt in my mind. Until we meet again, Father.
Yes, do it. When my father died a lot was not said... That was for almost 40 years
Something I've noticed as I've become an old man, Neil's chords are PERFECT.
I lost my Dad when I was a young teenager. Now every time I hear this song it reminds me of my Dad and how much I've become like him as I've gotten older. Sometimes I hope my old man is looking at my life and thinking I'm a lot like he was, and that he's proud of who I've become.
Ross listen to 'Cats in the Cradle by Harry Chapin.
Ross Portlock I'm sure he is brother😊
Respect.
Beautiful song which is more poignant with time. Neil is a true legend and the real deal. 👏
My father passed away two and half years ago. After years of anger and discord, we made peace with one another before he passed., thankfully. Father and son relationships can be so unnecessarily complicated. He would've been 90 a few days ago and has been on my mind a lot recently,
I heard a cover band play this song last night and was really touched. I have listened to this version at least a dozen times in the ensuing 18-hours. I am crying as I write this.
I miss you Pop!
Neill Galbraith Bless you. Please know you aren't alone as it relates to the story with you and your dad. My dad recently passed too. We butted heads for years but eminent death forced words out of my mouth that I was always too afraid to say. Things like I love you and I'm sorry. So we buried the hatchet as well, and while I'm glad we did, I still feel very unfulfilled. Don't wait people. Tell people close to you that you love them and don't worry about being right all of the time. I wish you all the best. Peace.
Thank you for your kind words. However, despite doing the right things, e.g. making peace, "unfulfilled" is a also very apt description of my feelings. Perhaps we both will find true peace in time.
Neill Galbraith , so true my friend.
Me too...getting older, disabled now.alone and showing the signs of battles lost and won.Still play my Martin 6 and 12 strings to Neil
Amen alone and 75 totally disabled wife and son abandoned me while i was in icu and my dog just died i do not mean to run on BUT I know your pain
Everyone loves a 12 string strum
Me, too.
Circle of life
I should get out and restring my 12. Most of the songs I used to know were Lenard Cohen and Neil Young.
We need to connect.....basically same here.....I’m in South Carolina
I love Neil Young, and especially this song. He mentions the 'young man' being 24 years-old, and I was 23 in 1972. Actually, Neil has a birthday coming up next month. On November 12, 2022 he will be 77 years-old. Neil is the best thing to come out of Canada since Canada Dry Ginger Ale!
I'm a Neil Young fan but, Rush was a pretty good thing to come out of Canada!!
This is pure gold! His voice is chilling no other like it!
After my uncle Tommy, a friend of Neil's, died at 26 in 1970, this song was played at his funeral. My old Finnish grandpa played this song at night till the day he died.
Yeah, you're right. He died in 1971, and it was some other Neil Young songs that were played, I guess. Good call. Grandpa used to listen to this for years after, though.
@Hello Warren how are you doing
Who on Gods green earth would dislike this?!
Stupid people, that’s all I can think of who..
Old men who hate music. 14000 of those old fuckers.
An asshole who voted for Trump!! Ha!
@@FuriousPsyOp you sure as hell said it! Need to shut the fuck up and stop voting for Trump and his followers! And nobody start any nasty shit about it. It was in jest but the truth for me
Definitely had to be a demoRat they hate anything that suggest being like the past.
hard to watch this and not tear up, as I'm now an old man myself and this song deeply resonates with me.
Getting and feeling a bit older these days….this song has had many different meanings to me over the years. I used to dread being that old man when I was a kid, then as I got a bit wiser I thought I hope I could be better than my old man was. Now I consider myself lucky to have met and listened to all those wise old men I’ve met over the years and I’m trying to show my son the wisdom you can gain to listening, learning and seeing the world thru those old man eyes.
Brings tears to my eyes every time I listen to this. I'm the old man now.
I'm the old lady now but in my head I'm 25
Sir, I bet you're the man! A lot of them didn't make it at all.
Me too
Me too. Brother. Both kids grown up now 😎❤️😇😇☝️📹🎵🎶🎤🔊👏👏😎
The old man is the fortunate one. No day is promised. 🤫
Lost my old man at Christmas aged 88. God bless Dad. 🇬🇧❤️
So very sorry Stephen. Kind regards.
That's some good innings! My old man died at a tender age of 52 😔
God rest their souls 💙✌
I think he's a lucky man to have had a fine son like you.
This is the wholesome shit I love seeing you're all wonderful
@@leturlefr3264 One of the reasons why I like watching meaningful songs. You realise there's others out there going through tough times as you!
So sick of hateful speech on social media!
✌
First ever live performance of this song (that I know of. Could be wrong, but..). The audience had no idea what they were about to hear.
My best friend took his life 5 months ago and he loved this song. Rest in peace, Daniel. Wherever you are, wherever you are going, I will see you again some day.
I am truly sorry 💔🙏💞
@@dmmichelledolan6459 Thank you so much for your heart felt reply. Really means a lot.
Thank you for sharing this rather sad story. Hope Daniel is at peace now. This song is 50 years old, remember when it first came out.
So sorry for your loss🌹🤝Am 70"still lesson to neil at 1971"15yr old"Trully a GREAT LEGEND🕊RIP🌹🌹Buddy/neil Both with 🙏 takecare 🇨🇦
@@fifermcgee5971 I do, too. Thank you.
I lost my dad a couple months ago and he absolutely loved Neil Young. He would play this song all the time. Love you dad
Hello Kitty.. how are you doing?
@@michaelsmith32329. Doing the best I can.
@@Kitty0814 that's great
@@Kitty0814 so where are you from?
Much love ❤️
His voice sounds amazing. Just a man and his guitar, so effective. Ive had an accoustic guitar for over 10 years, it sits in the corner of my room on a stand gathering dust, i still really havent mastered how to play it, although every now and then i'll pick it up, tune it and strum a few chords. I'm 42 and i can tell you i dont want to get old, but i dont want to die either. Life is amazing, life is crazy...I still miss my ex girlfriend. Its been 4 years. I have dated a lot of people, or should I say been on quite a lot of dates, and been in a few relationships, yet i have never met anyone like her. I would be considered decent looking i guess, but that counts for nothing. I feel lonely sometimes. I wish i hadnt messed things up with her in the way that i did. If i had a magic wand things would be different. But life goes on, and life is good too.
feel you bro. 46 here. same.
justmadeit2 you really need to dust it off and keep trying cause I was trying to learn to play and lost my index finger and didn't even try to play any more
Cats in the cradle
it gets better, keep your chin up, and be positive. Good luck and know there is someone for you.
Get the guitar out and play man ! Neil Young will inspire !!
Lost my grandpa two days ago. Weird I’m currently 24. He was an angry impatient and impossible man but always provided for his family and loved us the best he knew how. RIP GRANDPA I LOVE YOU!
$TVNTFAM.RECORDS our dead loved ones who’ve passed away may have been angry, impatient, and impossible, but once they are gone they are dead saints and can do no wrong. That’s how I felt about my first husband once gone and my dad too.
You just wrote almost word for word what I said when my grandpa died this spring, I'm sorry for your loss
Can feel this.
Life is strange
My dad was the same way but I know he loved me and provided for us the best he could.
I was 23 when this song came on Neil Young's album "Harvest." I'll be 73 this Sunday. Still listening.
I used to listen to and love this song as a kid growing up Now I'm the old man he s singing about Time flys!
