I like Eddie Van Halen's reason for loving David Gilmore. "David Gilmore is the benchmark of less being more. He has proved that shredding and fast playing is not the benchmark of mastery level. Gilmore never wastes a note; he builds his solos like a painter; every note, every bend, every tonal inflection has merit...David's solos paint a picture in the minds of his listeners. Something that really is a testament of his talent as a guitar player"
100% agree.
Beautifully said by EVH!
As a Brit we celebrate "less is more!"

This honestly might be the greatest guitar solo of all time.

It is
Kaleb Krail it is
It absolutely is!!!
I second that view, it's amazing - god like.
Possibly the best live guitar solo ever. No words can describe it. Like angels screaming, just pure emotion. I'm 65 now & love most rock, but always come back to this. It will never fade.
Makes me cry with the fender. My leaving song if you know me you'll know what it means to me
I'm 75 and I agree 😊
Anche io la penso come te ciao coscritto
Even Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, Paganini get on their knees when they lissen this..............
Me too. Simply the greatest version of the greatest rock ballad ever gifted to the world.
the second solo is mankind's greatest achievement
If you know chording & phrasing, the FIRST solo is that achievement 😂
Pompeii Hans't Been This Lit Since 79 A.D
Brilliant comment
❤
That's fucking cynistic. But it's brilliant. :-)
Man 1972 Floyd concert!!
lmfao
The solo is not something you hear , it's something you feel.
Wish I could feel that Good.!music is Magic. When they put everything in, it and then some 🤗
I'd be honored if David Gilmour fans would take a listen to my piano & vocal performances of WISH YOU WERE HERE and SLIT SKIRTS by Pete Townshend on my YT channel in tribute to the masters of lyricism and composition. Done live with no autotune or digital editing. Thanks and peace.
Goddamn that gives the chills to tears every time . Theres something ethereal to this
the best solo i ever heard, its touches the soul, gives goosebumps
You are right and it feels good to hear David Gilmour play guitar. He is one the best Rock Guitarist on our planet.
No doubt ! ... the best guitar solo ever. He's not playing guitar ... he is speaking to our soul, crying, singing, ... all the emotions of a human being are in this solo. That's why it is universal I think.
well said
In this world, there are songs, there is music and then there is Pink Floyd.
I totally agree
That final solo has saved more lives than therapy.
Hair standing up on my arms every time
I could watch this every day all day and still die a happy man. After I got sober, 13 years ago, it took me awhile to get back to Pink Floyd. Now I have much better appreciation for their work. Hell, I still listen to Radio K.A.O.S. from Roger Waters.
exactly!
Ahem to that. ☺
It makes my heart happy to know so many appreciate this music.
My dad is screaming at me from the next room to turn the bloody volume up for the Solo.
max haokip 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
My Favorite Song Of All Time. This REALLY Does Take Me Back To The 70,s
Maureen Brown your generation had the best bands ever. It must have been such a privilege to witness these musicians live
Go dad 🤣🤣🤣
Max, you're dad is absolutely in the right!
David Gilmour has given me goosebumps since 1974 straight to my spine. No one can do what he does with a guitar.
Whole life in one guitar solo...
Whoever's reading this, I want you to know, you have a great taste in music.
My dude so do you

No matter how many times i hear this song as soon as Gilmour starts the solo every single hair on my body stands up
True that 💯
His voice isn’t bad either.
I am getting a guitar because of this man
That's because you know what's comin'!
Marcus Jahnke oh hell ya hes got a killer voice
The fact that I'm 22 and love this band more than myself and everything else is....... This is enormous psychological punch that lasts, even when you're done listening, you're just wanna come back. This is the band that my dad was listening to in the 70s and 80s and he passed it to me. Fell in love in first seconds of listening. Beautiful!!!!
Same with me & my son, he's 23. 👍
No todo está perdido si piensas y sientes así, chiquito. Esto es increible realmente. Y agradece siempre a papá por haberte hecho escuchar esto!
This is a masterpiece. The way David Gilmour's guitar cries out in those solos feels like it's speaking directly to the soul, expressing a myriad of emotions whithout uttering a single word.
One of the best guitar solo's ever. Everyone in the band is just smiling while he does his solo and they're all jamming along
💯
the first one is great second one is overrated
I’ve never disagreed more in my life. Do we have the same ears?
Probably not, mine are human.@@dereksiegel255
THE BEST GUITAR SOLO.....EVER !!!!
That drummer has the face of the happiest man on earth
how could you not be , this is the best solo ever made ever
It seemed to me that I was the ONLY ONE who got on this! I was buzzing off him. I don't see how that isn't the most noticeable thing about this video, after the amazing rendition by David Gilmour (in a league of his own I believe. The man is early 70's here cool as ya like, no bouncing about giving it ego as most) I had to bring it to every person's attention I've watched it with. As one post here says yea look who he's playing with. I said that smile is him saying"WOW I'm Drumming with DAVID GILMOUR...!!!!! Soon as I seen him. Love this version
Looks to me like David's having a high time too. Not so many grinnings but plenty of picking!
Maybe he is! ... Who knows? 😂
Si yo estuviese allí, también lo estaría.
During this song he leaves this planet he’s is without doubt the greatest guitar player ever amazing isn’t the word.
I’m still here, need somewhere to chill out at the moment I’m 78 now and this still rocks my boat..
Hope you have many more years to enjoy the Phenomenon called Pink Floyd! Take care and best wishes!

Not one, ONE note is out of place in this solo. How is that possible. This guy is absolutely incredible. Best ever
Same as live8 not a note out of place the whole set, never be matched will Floyd.
Damn Straight!!!
I hear you brother
Yes Gilmour is one of the best a Legend.
David ❤
David Gilmour's voice at 70-something is 95% of what it was at 20-something. And his guitar playing appears to still be at 100%. Fine wine.
On my option, this should be somehow 120% or more on guitar part. ;-)
I’ve heard both 👍
Yes indeed 😊 FINE WINE 😍
Seriously insanely talented
@Mind Control Experiments lol
that solo is a song itself, it gave me goosebumps
Is this the greatest live performance of music ever
Yes
so true
If this doesn’t touch your soul, you might not have one.
I don’t have one, but I like the song lol

Work all the life is also a fight.
The smile on David's face in the end .. said everything
The drummer appreciated every single piece of that solo
I never saw a drummer having so much fun, and i've seen some pretty high times up there on the stage.
It looked like he was getting tired at the end lol
YEAH he was eating it up
Nick Mason..... 👏
@@melmayhem6001 Nope
The drummer knowns he is damn lucky to be chosen to perform with the legend, expressions on his face proves something money can't buy.
He is like "mommy, mommy, look I'm playing with Gilmour"
He looks pretty much younger than David so I think Pink Floyd had its best times when he was young
Absolutely agree with you dude
Thats definitly James Hetfield
No, not at all
This sends me to another universe where time and space does not exist. Don't wake me...please...
It's unbelievable a human being actually made this.

So would I if I had the chance

Damn! David still has it!! I am blown away by his guitar solo, the absolute best ever!!

Lost my grandfather 2 weeks ago, his favorite band was Pink Floyd. He had the full "The Wall" cd set in his home. I remember asking him, as he lay in his bed, unable to move much or speak much from the cancer that had spread through his body, if he wanted to listen to some Pink Floyd. He just simply smiled at me, eyes still a brilliant blue, and nodded. I am glad I got to enjoy this song with him, before he slipped intro the ever after, 2 days later. It has been stuck in my head since. I miss you Papa.
RIP 🙏
Rest In Peace to your grandfather.
R.I.P
If his favourite band was Pink Floyd, he is in a really good place rn :)
Thanks for making me cry, jerk. 😢. jk. RIP to your awesome Papa.
Love the drummers smile throughout, It just says to me, look at the gig I got, playing one of the best songs with one of the biggest bands in the world.
If it were me the smile would never leave ....ever....
Admittedly, when I was a teen I wasn't a huge Pink Floyd fan, but things happen when you get older and especially when you pick up the guitar and you learn to appreciate great guitarist. Now, I believe these are the single greatest rock solos of all-time. David Gilmour is easily one of my all-time greats. This song is a masterpiece.
Every time I watch this I smile when I see how happy the drummer is.
He's got a naturally "smiley" face, but most of the time it really does look like he's thinking "THIS CANNOT BE MORE AWESOME!!"
Ist auch meine Lieblingsstelle😊❤
He knows he is in the presence of greatness.
Comment spot on.
Hammers of history in music!..happy to be 300 in Comments
That second solo is the music of the center of the universe.
Awesome
What? I thought it was Gangnam Style.....
@@isagunalay5602
What we are seeing and hearing is a man's soul flowing through wood and steel...
A couple other versions, where at the end Gilmour makes that Strat absolutely scream with anguish and despair is like nothing I have ever come out of a guitar before. A guitar player poster on one of these vids said that he didn't even know what the sound was...he had zero idea how that sound was made on guitar.
Name them, Page, Clapton, Van Halen, whomever, for my money while all those top players are phenomenal players, Gilmour is transcendent. SO much raw emotion in this song. IMHO no one comes close.
@@jamespobog3420 anytime I listen to a really good guitar solo and I mean a really good one it just feels like im seeing into the eye of the universe in a way. Its very few dong that have made me almost cry because of all of the emotion being put through the instrument in a such a raw and visceral way. Maggot brain, weight of love and comfortably numb are those songs.
@@freshlypouredbingwater7913 Yep, know what you mean. There are actually a few songs that to me are borderline unbearable. Boys of Summer. Travelin' Soldier (Dixie Chicks...not a fan of them tho). The Flame (Cheap Trick). Ain't Missing You (John Waite)... et al. All extremely painful, yet they are all great songs...
This was one of the videos my late uncle showed me that we'd jam to. Legendary 👍🏼👏🏻
Greatest song of all time.
My father always said, ”No talking when Pink Floyd is playing”.
your father was a...
smart man!!

I love it, amazing just💐
A wise man preach.
can`t say blame him
The drummer's face when he remembers he's drumming along to a Dave Gilmour solo. Living the dream.
Well yeah, bee playing with david Gilmore that would look good on your CV.
David Gilmore belter on that carter
The drummer had dental surgery earlier that day and his mouth was frozen numb in smile mode.
@@thedorp lol, yeah sure does look like that.🤗🤗🤗
Yes living the dream, can you imagine? The problem is there would be nothing in this life thereafter that could compare to that moment.
I wish I had know about this concert before hand, I would have been there. Wish they would do it again, but probably not. I stood in that place 40 years ago, what a perfect environment for that masterful music! Thankfully this music will live on forever in recordings.
Amazing! David is smiling throughout that guitar solo and no doubt feeling the energy of the moment! Classic!! ❤😊
That is not human,it's other Worldy, touches a part of the soul you never knew you had😢
Can we just notice how amazing the lighting is?
YES.
Is like a guitar hero! 😁
@trippyforever I have. Not talking about pink Floyd though. I don't know much about them.
I watched this on acid and it was an absolute sensory overload. I could smell all the colors of smoke during the chorus. A bit scary but very cool
All computer done, nowadays. Just like all the choreography in fireworks displays. I’m absolutely not pining for the old days of concerts in the least .. the swaying lighters .. the lighting up of joints you pass on down the line .. followed by the fifth of Jack Daniels .. those were the days 50 years ago lol
Simply the best solo in the history of humanity.
Agreed. It encompasses all of his blues roots along with all of his own, unique voice and skills.
History of rock, perhaps, but there's Pat Metheny in jazz-rock, and Mike Stern, did you hear about that guy?

Hmmm! Debatable. Far too many to compare with. Gary Moore played a few.

During the solo every band member is smiling cause they are all aware that they are witnessing one of the greatest moments in history.
Mucho bueno
Agreed
They have been playing that solo for a very long time, still amazing tho
They are all swimming in the groove they are making, just to serve this solo. They are spectators just like we are. They just get to add more glorious sounds to the solo of solos!
Wouldn't the greatest moment in history be the beginning of the universe, this would be a close second though
He is just amazing
Im in tears right now😢
I'm 🇬🇧. We gave the world some music. Thank you.
That is the happiest and most spiritually fortunate drummer i have seen.
He's just high on Gilmour. Who wouldn't be?
He had high hopes

Every single person in Pompeii at that time was gilmoured
Steve distanislao. Great drummer
ikr
This may be the greatest live guitar performance of rock history, and lucky us, we still have Gilmour with us
Not maybe. THIS IS IT! PERIOD! FOR ALL TIME!
🙏
Agreed, the greatest of the greatest!!
Idk that solo from Another Brick in the Wall on Pulse is also pretty magical, the bass kicks in with slap part before playing an extended version of the solo. But yes, cherish David and I mean that. His soloing and the way he plays helped me build myself up as a better player, myself. Easily top 3 guitarist for me , of all time.

You just don’t want the solo to end… legends that will live forever
During that 5 minutes solo, David must have felt he was the coolest guy on the planet...he was!
he was for sure, sooooooooooo fucking good.
Exactly my thoughts about Davids 5 min solo he must have felt the effect that this song at that time would still be listened to for centuries to come.
No Gilmore is not from this planet. He's from other planet😎😎
Pure Brilliance
Definitely. Then afterwards Keith Richards went back to being the coolest guy on the planet. He deals with Mick Jagger who is probably more of a megalomaniac than Roger (love them all, regardless. Sometimes theses inflated egos are very important for this line of work.)
Possibly the best live solo of all time. Absolutely.....fucking Insane
Pink floyd is universal treasure to all humanity.

Smiling is putting it mildly. You can almost read him thinking - "This is really happening and I'm really here doing this! Fckng WOW!"
