    I live in Washington, and the Cask Strength Rye that they only offer at the distillery is one of my absolute favorite whiskeys. A great place to visit if you're ever in the area, and if you go in for a tasting they're always glad to give you something off the menu if you ask, and they always have some interesting offerings. Still, I always go home with a bottle of the Cask Rye 😋

    Nice thing about Woodinville Whiskey is it is no longer considered craft for its core offerings and according to the owners, they should be in all 50 states by the end of 2024.
    However, they still are making some wild and awesome single barrel experiments that are distillery releases only.

    • @BootsWalken
      @BootsWalken Před 9 měsíci +1

      Absolutely. I love visiting that distillery for a tasting. They're always happy to let you try the experimental stuff instead of the standard menu if show interest. Every so often I'll head out that way with the wifey and hit a winery for a bite, then head by the distillery afterwards, have a nice tasting of some interesting whiskey, and always go home with a bottle of the Cask Strength Rye. Makes for a great outing!

    Watching these videos is completely different after seeing the vault. I always imagined a sprawling cavernous room, with aisles and aisles of whiskeys.
    But in person it's more like a very nice walk-in closet, with whiskey in it.
    It's like a Tardis, but backward.
    Also, I have a grievance! A grievance, I tell you!
    The class included a pour of anything in the vault. So I said "Where's all the good whiskeys?" And they basically said "Not in the vault." Day ruined!
    (Okay, that's a lie. It was delightful. And meeting Daniel was cool as hell.)

    One piece of paper will have very high wind resistance relative to its weight, so that must be a factor in getting a feel for how to throw it, right? A heavier paper wad should be 100x easier to throw.

    Can you ever ferment different grains separately and then combine the wort for the distillation? Or can you do ferment separately, do separate stripping runs and then combine for the spirit run? Or are these differences negligible?

    • @WhiskeyVault
      @WhiskeyVault  Před 8 měsíci

      Yes! Love this. All of those things would change the final spirit. We did in with one of the products at Crowded Barrel once because the grains were so varied the fermentations were all over the map when mixed together. So we fermented all the grains separately, the combined the wort for still runs.
      Would could have distilled separately as well. that's a lot like what Canada does at some distilleries. All of those things would change the final product.

  • @geoffreyhicks2779

    If you want a better version of Canadian Club, go for the 12 year old. The flavor is richer and more complex than the basic and at about $20 it definitely punches above it's weight class.

    • @jarvy251
      @jarvy251 Před 9 měsíci +1

      It's the same old rye/corn caramel flavor, but at least it's a lot cleaner. 40 Creek double barrel is similar, but also had a bit of apple in the finish which I assume is from the barley

    • @geoffreyhicks2779
      @geoffreyhicks2779 Před 8 měsíci

      @@jarvy251 Amazing what a few extra years in the barrel can do! I've always gotten a distinct malty note from the 12. According to what I've read they use corn, rye, rye malt and barley malt in mashbill, each distilled separately then blended in the barrel. Apparently they use recharred ex-bourbon barrels. Being a Beam/Suntory product they're probably Jim Beam or Makers Mark barrels.

Much of what they dump in America is almost criminally bad (the very low priced crap) but they simply make bad whiskey. Sorry. It’s bad. Across the board. Some rare exceptions, that prove the rule, are all attempts to mimic American bourbons and (recently) ryes. Of course, whiskey is about taste and tastes vary. Canadian whiskey is proof that tastes vary A LOT. As in a whole country decided to put up with really, really, really bad stuff just to drink alcohol. Russia’s worse, if it’s any consolation… 😂
