I was in Spain in 1982 and saw many of the games, including the final. I din't have a ticket for the final but went to the stadium to see if I could get one. By luck, I saw a man standing around and asked if he had a ticket. He was a Portuguese man who wanted to go home. I bought his ticket for $80.
The ticket was just to the right of the German goal posts about seven rows from the bottom and I remember thinking that we had lost our chance when Cabrini missed the penalty. I remember the great roar that went up when Rossi scored the goal that opened the gates to victory. The Spanish public was totally for Italy and responded with great enthusiasm. I have never forgot that moment and the long lines of cars that ran through the streets of Madrid celebrating the victory. Great as this final win was, I can never forget the even greater victory against Brazil that Rossi fashioned which, by the way, I saw on tv with a Brazilian friend Great memories, fully alive after 40 years. As a small boy born and brought up in a village in Kerala(India), I still remember reading about your goal scoring abilities through news papers which used to bring the updates from the word cup match at-least 2 days after they had happened. What a sad year for 2020. Football lost 2 legends. First, it was the great MARADONA just a few weeks ago. Now, its the Italian legend, PAOLO ROSSI. Still remember how ROSSI destroyed Brazil in one of the most memorable WC match and also the memorable 1982 WC final with Italy's 3-1 win against West Germany.

I enjoyed listening to this man, he was quite deep really, very contemplative. Not just a great footballer, but also I feel the philosopher in him. Young players should listen to him speak, they would not just learn about football, but also more importantly about themselves. Rest in peace Paolo. Pure in physical excellence and spirit.

38 years ago, and I remember that World Cup like it was yesterday. What a team Gli Azzuri fielded! Zoff, Tardelli, Conti, Antognoni, Scirea, Gentile, Cabrini, and of course Rossi. Not many footballers have put together 3 matches like Pablito did against Brazil, Poland, and West Germany. RIP, Paulo. You were one of the all-time great ones.

I was born only a few months after our 1982 triumph. Growing up as a kid in Milan in the 1980's, the videos of him celebrating his goals in 1982 with such passion, whilst looking so slender and elegant in our national shirt are memories that stick with every Italian and every lover of football. I'm so saddened to hear he has passed away. 64 is too young for anyone to go, and even more so for a man who will remain forever immortal in our hearts. A world champion is forever a champion. I live close where Paolo Rossi lived(Italy,Tuscany, Arezzo, Bucine), near ten or less km. I met him, I talked with him. I feel close to him, ad "compatriots" of the same region. He was not an exhibitionist. He was humble and reserved. I was not struck by the fact that he was a footballer, by the way one of winners of the Golden Ball, but the fact that he was so simple, so smiling, so hilarious.

The '82 World Cup where Italy emerged as the unlikely victors and Rossi overcame disgrace and scandal to become the hero was the most emotional and compelling sporting event I've ever witnessed. The only other thing that comes close was Lake Placid Winter Olympics in 1980 when the USA defeated the Soviet Union in hockey.
the 1980 US hockey team was much more unlikely to win than Italy "82 was. Italy had a very strong defense, had many great players and could have won the WC four years earlier in argentina, and rossi was an established star although out of shape initially due to his 2 year ban from soccer.

In 1982 I watched the Worldcup being part of a great Worldcup seeing Italy defeting Germany :) ( I was 12 years old and it was just before the start of the 1982/1983 season ) we had a soccer tournament. I was the last one to be called to come play this tournament. So there was only one shirt left.... #20. My teammates joked..... Rossi!!! I'll never forget that. Also I never forget I scored 4 times in the 1st game. Of course this is my memory to Paolo Rossi. Grazie Paolo, Rest In Peace

I am Brazilian and Paolo Rossi was a fantastic footballer, all respect to him. He died too young. Despite being a child I remember the match against Brazil in 1982 and he was absolutely brilliant. RIP Rossi.
