My dad who was a Marine used to run awareness drills on my sister and I growing up too. Not as far as using a fake gun, but he would literally pretend to kidnap us or “rob the house” and then grade us on our choices and performance. Now I look for escape routes when I walk into any room, so that was my childhood 🙃

my husband and i were just watching this show a few weeks ago and there was an episode that was actually disturbing. this dude owned a business downtown and would force his three older kids to sleep in the cellar of this business flat on their stomach in sleeping bags on the concrete floor and his wife and five year old son refused to go down there. his wife was crying and very visibly stressed the entire segment. we just couldn't believe they actually aired the episode. it's season 1 episode 11, the last like 13 minutes of the episode.
For what reason? How is that helpful?

gotta be honest i watched this episode after reading this comment and didn't see most of what you're claiming. Yes his wife and one of his children didn't want to go down there, but he spent one night in the bunker with his 3 other kids probably for the sake of the show. He knows that his wife doesn't want to go down there unless "shtf" but we know that won't happen so atp he is not forcing any of his family down there. The other 3 clearly stayed willingly. I'm not agreeing with anything that this guy believes in, but you should stop spreading false info. Especially if you're gonna make it clear which episode you're talking about so other people can go and watch it. you're making most of this comment up.

One episode of Wife Swap included a prepper family. So convinced the world was ending soon, they'd gone into immense debt, as they wouldn't have to pay it back. As a non-conspiracy-theorist, it was horrifying and sad to watch, particularly considering the effect it had and would have, going forward, on their kids.

My Husband made me stop watching any prepper shows/videos lol I have schizophrenia and it went untreated until pretty recently, so I would obsess over them and get super super paranoid and upset that WE weren't prepping because I just KNEW something awful was gonna happen. It doesn't help that I grew up with a paranoid hoarder who believed the government was using satellites to watch her. I still carry a lot of paranoia that I won't be ready for something awful, but it's not as bad. And we can't have weapons in the house because of my ✨history✨ so that makes me feel like I'm gonna just be straight up murdered sometimes.

As someone who works in the medical field I can say that the Pandemic lady was infinitely more knowledgeable about proper PPE than almost every single person I have encountered in the past year. Also, I happened to notice that she wasn’t hoarding an inordinate amount of toilet paper either...

Not to mention they’ll probably end up being bullied by other kids cuz they didn’t have a normal childhood
yeah as someone with a mother with intense contamination ocd, not even to this extent, but me and all my siblings now all have some level of anxiety, ocd for my brother and i, about getting sick and contamination. pandemic has not helped, and now we're all terrified constantly of anything un-sanitised or washed. it sucks.
The typical case of someone on the internet seeing edited content of a group of people who have learned something special and just assume that they are going to be traumatised and fragile for the rest of their lives. Just because their dad has an interest in survival and teaching his kids to throw axes and listen to birds, doesn't mean that they do this 100% of the time. They most likely have their own lives and thoughts by now. People aren't literal idiots who collapse if they are taught to be aware and cautious at a young age. They are individuals, don't let the show trick you into believing them to be mute axe-throwing bird-whispering neanderthals.
The show is about how the guy teaches them survival, if the show was about the kids, i don't think you would see them as traumatised and paranoid. So stop assuming stuff like that, traumatisation isn't something to throw around when talking about something you don't understand

I feel so bad for deerskin guy's kids. He's made their entire lives about surviving something that probably won't ever happen to them. He's instilled fear of everything and everyone at all times. I grew up with a similar mentality and it's really bad for your mental health to constantly be waiting for a bomb to go off or to get ambushed. That's not how kids should be growing up. It's very smart to be prepared, well stocked with supplies. But that is way, wayyyyy too far and can do a lot of damage. Also, most of that self defense garbage would be useless in a real situation. Especially when his young daughter slowly pushed the gun away and very lightly kicked him and he pretends to go flying back. I hope she doesn't actually think that'd work.

so by the same token, a kid learning martial arts would be useless against any kind of adult. People don't teach their kids martial arts so they can beat up adults, its about learning and having the skills and foundation so they will be much more advanced than if they tried to learn it as an adult starting from nothing. Kids learn everything much easier and faster than adults do.
