    Dude from the USA here: Thank you for your invaluable insight. I do not mean this sarcastically or mockingly. I truly do appreciate the fact that you are able to have these sorts of thoughts and conversations. It feels like anytime this sort of subject comes up, we aren't allowed to voice any opinion that isn't approved by one group or another.

    God I fucking love your takes. I'm trans and I completely agree with you and recognize what you've concluded on. I've always watched your stuff because I love and agree with a lot of what you have to say.
    I came into this video knowing you'd be able to put a lot of my thoughts and feelings into words and I am not disappointed. (:
    I love that you can recognize the plight of minority groups, but you also call out irrational sjw behavior that does nothing to help those groups. And I like how you don't go off on edgy bigoted rants like a lot of anti-sjw people go on. You're just completely rational.
    As a journalist I love your work. As a trans person, I love what you had to say on this topic.

    I thought I had a pretty good handle on who was in the right and why on this chappelle thing, incredibly after listening to Lewis I realised I didnt because I didnt really get what was going on in the first place, and why. It''s so easy nowdays to form an unwaivering opinion based on the bits you hear about but its also so hard to remember to not look for right and wrong ,what matters is just to understand where people are coming from.

    I had soccer coaches in high school and college that would always tear into us if we did something stupid. I wouldn't say I'm the biggest fan of that coaching style but it definitely worked on most people on the team. I liked my coaches overall(mainly bc I never did anything completely dumb) and they were rarely going to lose their shit over something small unless they had a really bad day. Its still pretty uncomfortable when your team is playing like shit or screwed up something we'd practiced a ton and you go off the field at half time to your coach yelling his head off at people. That clip just looks like a coach going off on somebody for something he's probably told them not to do before. I don't know why everything has to be about race, I bet that coach just really likes to scream at people lol. Whether you agree with that coaching style or not is another conversation.

    • @loamymtb
      @loamymtb Před 2 lety

      Same situation here, had a soccer coach who would yell so much and get so emotional it was not uncommon for him to get ejected from the field. He had a lot of knowledge and you could tell he was passionate about the game but I would say that style did more harm than good. It was always tense on the sideline when things weren't going well, you knew the next practice was going to suck

    Chapelle is definitely one of my favorite comedians of all time. There was always some jokes that didn't landed right with me and I think maybe being and the discomfort of some parts is probably intended, but overall I love his style of comedy. One of the few to take heavy topics and not only make it funny while also leaving the thought of "shit, that's not that far off the mark though, is it?". I haven't watched The Closer specifically yet because Netflix's subscription price got really outrageous in my country but I definitely plan to someday, but this one it seems like he definitely shot for something more meta for the twitter clips I've seen. It doesn't seem like his best work from a comedy perspective but "performative art" seems like a perfect way to put it given how every social media bubble collectively lost their marbles.

    as a transgirl I feel like one of the biggest lacking points today are how little we are informed of the concept of being trans or cis. Like today I'm 17 and I came to the conclution that I'm trans about half a year ago, but during pretty much my entire life I went around feeling like something just wasn't right. And like if we were just introduced to the concept of trans earlier in life I feel like a lot more people would be able to come to a point where they are sure of who they are. I feel like that would also help prevent a lot of depressive episodes in peoples lives, personaly I know it would have helped me.

Reminds me very much of the JK Rowling stuff where, if you push through all the people claiming bigotry and transphobia to actually get to the content of what the person said, there is just reasonable disagreement at worst and more often even active acceptance and understanding. Too many people haven't contended with real bigotry, it seems. It's this toxic, oppressive response that draws further pushback from the people it affects. How could it not?

    Howdy Rich, watched your content for years, started at the Home story cup and used to do reposts to Teamliquid, reddit and other stuff for ya but, then left your content around 2016ish as i drifted pretty far left on the political spectrum and started exploring different ideas.
    That said, this video did not go the way i expected it to, and it's clear you've changed a lot as well, seem's we've all changed a lot since the SC2 days haha.
    Strangely as a person that is quite left, i think Dave's special had a lot more nuance then the wider conversation on trans issues and i think sadly it might just have been too nuanced for most people to follow, kinda like the old hypothetical conversations and analogies that you used to have with Destiny and Thorin on those various talk shows.
    I think the heart of the matter really isn't about the jokes. To be fair to your criticism i do believe Dave fucked up when he used gender and sex interchangeably and the stuff about jk rowling. That has really bad negative effects but i think that's more out a general ignorance and it's something i honestly think he could be reached on. It's an aha moment he just hasn't had because once that concept clicks into place everything else kind of falls into place with understanding the Trans movement and their struggles. The other big one is understanding that Dypshoria is the illness and transition is the treatment.
    But i think what he was really getting at all came to a point right at the end. Empathy is bi. To tear others down through cancellations like we've been doing to "protect" a minority has drifted from a self defensive position, to an aggressive, nasty and malicious position as people have lost that empathy and respect for the person they're tearing apart.
    We appear to be at a crossroads with trans issues, and i hope we pull back from the brink of ruin for the movement by slowing down the tearing of others that's been so far unchecked across the twitterverse and to a softer more gentle approach lest the gains of the movement be lost in the irrelevant arguments of extremism online.
    Last thing we need is lose all the progress we'd gained by repeating the mistakes we made in 2016 when we allowed the alt-right a space in the door for people confused and caught in the crossfire of a rapidly changing social fabric. That'd be shit for us all.
    Hope you're well mate, ZizLah

    • @Damious100
      @Damious100 Před 2 lety +1

      I use to be of the firm opinion cancel culture is real, but I think that its more complicated then people give it credit for.
      You have to ask yourself what is cancel culture?
      And when did it begin?
      And the answers are... not easy.
      When we look just at the 20th century alone we can find many many many examples of cancel culture, the difference was who was empowered to do the canceling.
      I think you could argue our culture began to shift in the 60s/70s and it began to really show in the 90s with punk rock etc etc.
      And then the internet.
      I feel like the internet has caused culture to shift so dramatically so quickly its almost at a break neck speed that forces our 20th century culture and 21st century culture to co-exist in a way I'm not sure culture has ever had to do before in a society.
      My best guess is neither culture will survive and a 3rd culture will rise. Maybe it will be a merging of the two even. We won't really know for decades though and this is where I think worrying about the culture war becomes a mistake. These things sort themselves out with time, in the meantime we should focus on being a good person.
      While I love Dave, I really hate his beyond meat joke. I'm not even trans and that fucking hurt. I think he crossed the line from joking to bullying there. That's my line, not cAnCeL cUlTuRes line.
      I really hope Dave can somehow turn this into a healthy conversation because so far he's stirring a pot just to make his critics mad. Which is trolling and I get it, but really odd for the most successful comedian to do, especially when he says he wants a conversation.

    As for the trans person in netflix can we stop pretending that all people of one category would do and think the same? That was partially his point about his trans friend and again what would happen to a trans person if they let something through that doesnt walk the line?

    to the point on the Trans movement, there is a developing country that has figured it all out decades ago, where the country is notorious partly because of its' trans population, where they work in all sectors and are very visible, accepted and safe - Thailand. Yet America and the individualists there have made themselves the epicentre of this great new struggle, when they could look for solutions elsewhere, if they knew anywhere else in the world existed. Bear in mind that the attitudes towards trans people is very different there (TH), in that they are generally well accepted, especially by the younger generations. But Thailand (and many countries in Asia) are much more about the collective than the individual. The in-your-face-ness of the approach in the US and somewhat the UK, to me, is repulsive, where a natural transition of ideas and beliefs is being stifled. Whatever the transition period looked like in Thailand when it happened, I don't know. But now at least, trans (i.e. ladyboys) there just blend into society with the acceptance that they can live their life like anyone else. I just don't get the sense that that is the end goal for a lot of the American trans people, where the goal seems to be claiming themselves to equal to biological men, or women, when they just be their own unique thing and get on living. Another final thing to consider; being trans there often doesn't involve making life-altering changes to your body i.e. a lot of them don't undergo surgery. That includes tom-boys which you also see a lot more of there. Whatever it is, they are doing it absolutely right. Hence why I think it isn't really about finding a solution, and more about a new way to claim victim status (not in all cases, but the loudest voices perhaps)

    The critcism of Chappelle's statement about 'everyone passing through the legs of a woman' is totally absurd, and his statement holds regardless of surgical 'c-section' interventions.
    _Because even if they didn't COME OUT 'through the legs of a woman', _*_THAT'S CERTAINLY HOW THEY WENT IN! (during the act of insemination.)_*
    Chappelle's 'legs of a woman' point still holds true.
