I feel bad for Wheatley. In fact, it wasn't his fault. He just wasn't designed to control the facility, but to stop GLaDOS from trying to flood the entire facility with neurotoxin. And plus, Wheatley's hardware was just too underpowered to use the mainframe. The mainframe just pushed him beyond his limits, and thus, he couldn't resist. He couldn't think properly, nor maintain the facility properly, because his hardware was just not designed for that stuff. On the other hand, GLaDOS was designed to control the facility (and to contain Caroline's mind).
I honestly agree with you. Wheatley was indeed, not designed to run the facility. Also, You are correct about GLaDOS containing Caroline's mind, because there is a theory that GLaDOS is actually Caroline, because during Cave Johnson's final words at the near end of the Old Aperture area, he said something about brain mapping, which I guess is when you take someone's consciousness and quite literally put them into a computer. He unfortunately passed away from lunar poison before he could put into a computer, and live forever. So I think they put Caroline's consciousness in a computer and renamed her to GLaDOS so she can run the facility, and grant Cave's final wish after he passed. What do you think? I may be going a little overboard here, but what do you think?

She didn't reward them.
She just sent them back to their jobs, much to the anger to the group, which caused the turrets to overthrow GLaDOS in a song-y revolution. GLaDOS was now PianOS in this alternate universe

Honestly would have been a terrifying alternate ending for the robots that were either built when GLADOS was in charge or not connected to the syndicate all ran at Wheately while he was in control and jumped and started trying to rip him out of control zombie apocalypse style. Like you would see Wheately activate an attempt at a counter for the robot mutiny by using turrets or something like that and they would all get overran by the larger number of robots who were not only built to secure the facility, but also ensure the person in charge is safe, that being GLADOS.
