The Darker Side of Aperture | Personality Cores | FULL Portal Lore

- čas přidán 7. 06. 2024
- The Personality Cores of The Aperture Science Facility were created to help the scientists run the facility and deal with an issue they had with the GLaDOS project. After many apocalyptic events, the cores saw this opportunity as a way to run Aperture their way.
Why were they constructed? Were they originally human? and how did they help keep Aperture functioning when humanity no longer could? In this video, I explore the lore and story behind the Personality Cores in Portal.

It is theorized that Wheatley was more than just an intelligence dampening sphere, but also programmed to make ideas that hinder Glados/the core in charge and prevent them, hence why he led Chell around before taking over the facility and then proceeded to hinder himself
Maybe the idea behind weathly was to destroy the facility so that no one would have ever gotten close to the tecnology
@@craz2580 I feel like that isn’t something that Cave Johnson would want, though the scientists may have wanted to destroy what they’d created
That would explain why despite being a moron, he manages to disrupt her turrets and destroy her neurotoxin supply.
do he's more like a sabotage core?
I wonder was gladus rright he was made to be dumb cause he sure is
So basically humans created cores to control glados but they were so good that they made them into into workers and they became little society
basically yeah
They live in a society
Now i dont have to watch it a-
I’ve always wondered if her trying to kill them all was because she wasn’t a volunteer. That they had attached the additional cores to keep Carolyn suppressed until only glados remained
Seeing how she calm down after she remembered her memories she probably was a volunteer. I am guessing more likely it wasn’t taught morality and given a lot of power and probably confused then experimental on was what messed her up or it’s something to do with her subconscious
@@nil_system I’m pretty sure they found some unused audio files of Carolyn begging not to become apart of GLaDOS, I think she did what she did due to a psychotic break and uncontrollable anger
@@Ryan-in6ls my original answer is based of the video and what I know.and seeing how it's unused they decided not to go with that
@@nil_system they only didn't because the voice actor of Cave Johnson refused to do the voice lines due to disagreement with the type of character he was.
@@Namelessstew to me not in the game.not indented to be used/found like in a arg then it's not cannon. Can u imagine every joke/scraped idle file developers leave in the game is cannon?
My interpretation of Wheatley thinking he would die if he used his basic functions is as follows, the scientists/engineers didn't tell him that, the other cores did. Because they saw him as stupid, they bullied him. Maybe that's one of the reasons he wanted to leave
I think it's was just random kid who told him just for the lols
Nooope. The reactor was about to blow up.
Tbh I think with Wheatley being the "bad idea" core he would naturally come up with the idea to not use his basic functions all on his own
I think it was the scientists/engineers just because they didn't want that level of Idiot doing what he pleased, but i like the idea of the other cores bullying him its fitting
I tend to think about it like this:
The engineers tell Wheatly that if he uses his flashlight or pops off his rail he will die, as in, his battery would eventually die, or, don't get off the rail if nobody is around. However, he mistook these warnings as "Never do these specific things or you will die instantly.", and never took the time to realize that would be impossible in the first place.
I love how so much emotion can be conveyed by a little round moving metal eye.
There's actually a full showing of how the personality core was developed to express as much as a metal ball on a management rail could. Handles, actuations, eyelids, they all were developed to approximate parts of the human face, like the brow, cheekbones, etc.
Probably the reason why the cores got redesigned compared to the Portal 1 versions.
Caroline said she never wanted her personality to live forever
I'd bet that she became angry and scared when she was forced into the AI scanner and that's why GlaDos is so different.

A theory i have is that glados may ne hostile due to how caroline was feeling in her last moments when she was being uploaded. She was probably angry as hell
I'd be angry too tbh
Not to mention that she was forced into the upload due to Cave Johnsons request
YES i had this exact thought!!! i think at first she remembered who she was as caroline and was angry at cave johnson, but as she slowly forgot who she was she just ended up taking out her anger on the scientists / chell
I would have made a “suit” that gave cores a portal gun and arms and legs and said to upload me to a core and plug me into the to the “suit” after that. Maybe I should rewrite that sentence.
@@xanderplayz3446 thats straight up just atlas and p-body its not confirmed but glados might have copied chells brain and used it for the coop testing bots
Not only is wheatly greatly written, but Stephen Merchant does great voicing him, really suits it
I really prefer the original voice, dunno if you've ever heard it, it's on youtube, it was what valve showed at e3 before release and they changed it to merchant at the last minute.
Have a watch, see what you think!
@@grindelston5968 I wouldn't call Merchant's casting a last-minute thing, since Richard Lord was never intended to be the final voice for Wheatley to begin with; he emphasized that he was just a placeholder for the _Meet Wheatley_ video. It's possible that Merchant was already casted as Wheatley, since Lord wrote in his blog that "theres no way you will be dissapointed with the final voice - i'm over teh moon with who it might be." (sic). It's just that they haven't recorded and/or edited anything in time for the video, hence the placeholder voice.

One very interesting thing is that there probably is a multiverse out there that never invented the cores because GLADOS never tried to kill anyone and she insisted functioned like the scientists intended. And so they would never have tried to make the cores.
Another universe in which the scientists did find a combination of cores that succeeded in permanently
making GLADOS safe and friendly is also interesting to think about.
U think there is a tech demo where cave becomes "GLaDOs" while he regrets it he doesn't become murderus and just wants to die
The cores being human uploads / imprints sounds canon to me. How else would Aperture be able to create AI too advanced, even be able to experience emotions and talk so much more human-like than even GLaDOS ?

Wheatley is in TF2 as one of the tools for Spy, even though it's a Valve game, Wheatley in TF2 is called the AP-SAP, which is the item used for sapping Engineer buildings in TF2, and has Wheatley voice lines tied to the item whenever you pull it out or use it to sap things.
I forgot about that 💀
Ok, as cool as that is, doesn't having Wheatley talking during the sapping process defeat the point of the sapper being a stealth tool? The engi will likely hear it immediately.

I do love the personality cores, I think valve did a lot to make them (and glados) feel very human. My favourite is the space core, I just can't help loving him. Which one's your favourite?
Wheatley. The pain he expresses in the final Portal 2 fight as you let him talk really shows that there's likely more to the cores than mere AI.

Do get the feeling that the central theme of Portal 2's story has to do with how Wheatley became even more of a disaster than GLaDOS ever was after he took over the facility.
Maybe something about how power wielded by someone who doesn't have any real awareness of their own flaws and is thus unable to control them, is more dangerous than power wielded by someone with actual malice.
Would explain why they still spent a good chunk of the runtime establishing GLaDOS's malicious nature before even letting Wheatley take over, even though most players would have already been well aware of what she is. Her behaviour is an important point of comparison in the story if the comparison is the story's most important point. :)
GlaDOS: Lawful Evil
Post-Part 1 Core Transfer Wheatley: Chaotic Evil
@@prometheanrebel3838 pretty much!
I think he _does_ know about his flaws, he's pretty self-aware and seems to have a low self-steem he just tried to boost his ego a little bit with small things like the "hacking" and such.
And of course, giving this amount of power to an insecure person can be chaotic.
@@pascuala. yeah, I guess developing a willful ignorance of oneself isn't miles away from a lack of awareness :)
He certainly seems more self-aware in the post credits which suggests the body itself might have something to do with suppressing it. Or maybe just the sheer amount of power.
I just realized...
Valve intentionally gave Aperture an 'Apple'-like aesthetic. The Cores are portable pods based on the shape of an eye. They're eye-pods.
I was here late enough to appreciate this. Up top..
don't forget the space sphere wasn't happy forever
faced with the realization of just how big space is, it soon wanted to return to earth as furiously as it wanted to go to space
This is just a theory of mine, but what if the cause of GLaDOS's murderous actions were of either her inner intrusive thoughts taking control and her not knowing, or maybe it was for revenge because of the other theory of Caroline being forced to become GLaDOS against her will. I mean think about it, maybe it was the other side of Caroline's happy go lucky personality from what I've observed from her voicelines with Cave Johnson during the near climax of Portal 2. This is just a small theory I had when I played Portal 2 after Portal 1
Update: So Caroline WAS forced to become GLaDOS
I'd like to think that maybe the process of uploading her didn't kill the original and when GLaDOS was fired up it realized it was a copy when faced with it's human self giving her orders and that's what made her so mad.
nowhere in the game or canon does it say she was forcced to be uploaded.
@@magentawool2556 Cave Johnson said he wanted her to be the one uploaded if he died. And he said to do it even if she didn’t want it and he knew she would refuse. Also there’s voice lines that didn’t make it into the game that are implied to be Caroline refusing the upload
love the part where u listed all of those cores, it registered in my brain as a bunch of new aesthetics dropping lmao
My favorite aesthetic is Useful Core That Is Definitely Not A Portal To Hell Core
Yes! Been waiting for this one to be remastered. Given how I think the original holds up pretty well, I'm excited to watch this asap.
Thanks buddy! I hope you enjoy it!
I like the thought that cores are uploaded human brain engrams. It actually makes sense that Aperture techs would side step programming each core to bring it up to sentience, by just grabbing whatever it is that makes our brains work. It also explains the large number of defective cores. Since they're all connected by wifi, Aperture Labs could have developed one master sentience, with each core having just the personality & programming for their purpose. Equivalent to a human having multiple personalities, except, all at once.
14:48 Considering Portal was in the Orange Box alongside Episode 2:
I always thought they were an aperture equivalent of the Heli Mines from Half-Life 2/E1/E2 - It had never dawned on me that they were also cores! I thought it was just a cake trap!
Watched this in my break of coding (Gamedesign student here).. the space core is floating around as an easter egg in my game now as well! :D
Pretty cool. I love the cores for howsimple they are yet mean so much to the game¿s lore and even make or a great character with the Whitley. And if I was a core, I think I'll be either the anger one or a curiosity one.
Curiosity is a good one!

If I was an Aperture scientist I probably would have suggested after the first time she released neurotoxin into the facility that we give her access to something that tells her it's filled with neurotoxin but is just oxygen or something else that's harmless so she could still "attempt" to release it without anyone actually being hurt and never let her have access to enough to fill more than 1 test chamber with (cause I have no idea why they would bother having it to start with unless for in the test chambers). I would also make sure that there was no way the neurotoxin could enter any areas such as observation rooms, staff lounge, main entrance, bathrooms, labs, pretty much anywhere that the scientists would be at not including inside the test chambers so she can only kill test subjects. As for what I would make as a last resort if she some how managed to bypass everything else would be a mask all personal (other than test subjects) have to have around their neck ready to go along with an antitoxin (granted one would be able to be made at all) that would be attached to the lanyards that their credentials would already be on.

One possibility is that we play as one of the many Androids GLaDOS developed for testing. If that's what happens, then the possibilities are endless, from a puzzle chambers only game, to even straight up WAR between the AIs.

Im listening to ur portal lore while doing homework. Its relaxinng and really fun
I would love to see you make a video about Aperture's nanotechnology that maintain the foundations of the facility
I'd like to but there's barely any information except for the fact they exist and a few names
You know the question I have... why are the test chambers made as puzzles to begin with? Portal 2 makes it pretty clear that this was a deliberate decision by Aperture that they even built their AIs around, so that they can't tell the subjects how to solve the puzzles. But if this is just product testing for the portal gun and whatever other wacky inventions Aperture designs, wouldn't it be more efficient and effective if the subjects knew what they're supposed to do with what they're given?
It could be a quirk of company philosophy chalked up to Cave Johnson's insanity, but most of his insanity is pretty well spelled out in Portal 2's story, where the whole puzzle aspect is only established to have been done on purpose, but without any hint as to why.
I don't think he was just trying to playtest product. I think he saw himself as a scientist discovering new things about the human condition. I think a lot of the products invented were meant to test human lab rats.
To me the fact that he invented a backup so that tests can still be done by the ai cores even after an apocalypse scenario where all humans are wiped out shows that the science itself is more important to him than just it's selling value.
@@sardonicus1739 An interesting idea for sure.
And clearly something was more important to Cave Johnson than selling value 'cause he hardly ever sold anything XD
i really would love an in depth video from you on the gman, even if it was just mostly speculation, hes the most fascinating part of the half life series in my opinion, that and all the other lore that proves theres forces way beyond our control at play, for us a life or death struggle, for the powers that be in the multiverse just tuesday.
thank you for your work! very informative and engaging video
The personality cores are literally one of my favorite parts of the games. They add so many more questions and theories to explore with the story of Aperture (like the question of whether or not the cores personalities are derived from the uploaded/imprinted consciousnesses of the employees). Thanks for making this video; you did a wonderful job laying out the lore of these delightful constructs. ^v^
--If I were a scientist at Aperture in charge of personality construct creation, I think I'd request for a Music Composition Core to be made: their task would be to write music for the facility to boost productivity and morale. They could be named Pachelbel or something. :) That, or I'd want a Silly/Jester Core to be made, to lighten the stress and depressing mood, y'know?
you know what I don't see many people (in fact basically no one) talking about? the fact that adventure core was ALSO sucked into space, so perhaps they are also orbiting Wheatly, just further away. also its said the reason why space core orbits Wheatly is because Wheatly is so dense (literally and figurately)
I noticed something watching this
The moon was visible in the sky at the end of Portal 2 when Chell shot a Portal on the moon which lead to Wheatley and her being pulled through a portal to space
But after being brought back through the portal by GLaDOS it’s day when she gets to the surface
Which means Chell was asleep for either 12-1 hour/hours
Chell was exhausted
We need personality cores for politicians.
I'd prefer them tbh. UK's going through a rough patch with politicians atm
That would be nice

now , with the new "portal revolution" mod if we can combine the lore from those extraordinar mods, we know , that Caroline (GlaDOS) never agreed to be scanned and put inside a core , and most probably someone from aperture did it when she was unaware of this ; so most probably the scan wasn't complete and that why in portal 2 we can see her become Caroline when she's a potato , the proper GlaDOS was ruled by a set of protocols and "laws" when Caroline is actually a personality, when she was free of those protocols we can see that there is actually a human there after all , and about the part where she didn't agree for the neuroscan (portal revolution mod lore) , that's why she doesn't remember being named CEO and is not bringing up the part where she killed everyone in the facility.

19:34 what's interesting is it seems that having control of the facility is what causes the murderous tendencies. When Glados is removed from it, she becomes more docile, and more like Caroline.

Part of my brand at this point
I love portal lore videos, this is one of them
I watched this while filming a vid on my channel, and i gave you creds of course.
On your point of how they would of needed more narrative to implement them... I have to disagree when I met the other cores during the end game I remember being so fascinated by them I spent about 2 hours trying to hear everything they had to say. My favourite obviously the Space core. However if they just dumped a Morgan Freeman Core mid game as temporary replacement to wheatly I would of done exactly the same with him even if it was only 1 level. I imagine it would not be that it is Morgan Freeman just completely obsessed by him. Probably trying to Turing test into being Morgan Freeman. That literally needs no introduction just a babbling core you need to carry from A to B without getting annoyed and ditching it or setting him free believing it is what remains of One of the most iconic actors of the 21st century.
As this has had a few likes I'd also like to add that if the Morgan Freeman Core was a thing and you did have this objective of carry it to A to B or listen to it and set it free... I honestly would leave either path completely ambiguous on whether it survived or not regardless the path... like if you put it in the trash compactor like your told the compactor fails and it laughs and states "I'm Morgan Freeman and I will not be defeated." Or gives a tear jerking speech about Freedom then just simply states... "Just leave me here i have Narration to provide..." then it'll proceed to describe the room you leave him in. Because how amazing would Portal 2 be if you can Narrate half the game with a core that thinks its Morgan Freeman! Like imagine if you got it into Wheatleys terrible puzzles and he struggles to define the room without giving away the solution and eventually breaks from Narration to argue with Wheatley.
What could go wrong if you give a unstable murderous AI just "a little neurotoxin"....
